RESUMEN

The polar oceans play a vital role in regulating atmospheric CO2 concentrations (pCO2) during the Pleistocene glacial cycles. However, despite being the largest modern reservoir of respired carbon, the impact of the subarctic Pacific remains poorly understood due to limited records. Here, we present high-resolution, 230Th-normalized export productivity records from the subarctic northwestern Pacific covering the last five glacial cycles. Our records display pronounced, glacial-interglacial cyclicity superimposed with precessional-driven variability, with warm interglacial climate and high boreal summer insolation providing favorable conditions to sustain upwelling of nutrient-rich subsurface waters and hence increased export productivity. Our transient model simulations consistently show that ice sheets and to a lesser degree, precession are the main drivers that control the strength and latitudinal position of the westerlies. Enhanced upwelling of nutrient/carbon-rich water caused by the intensification and poleward migration of the northern westerlies during warmer climate intervals would have led to the release of previously sequestered CO2 from the subarctic Pacific to the atmosphere. Our results also highlight the significant role of the subarctic Pacific in modulating pCO2 changes during the Pleistocene climate cycles, especially on precession timescale ( ~ 20 kyr).

With the consumption of terrestrial metal resources, deep-sea polymetallic nodule minerals have been widely exploited around the world. Therefore, the environmental impact of deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining cannot be ignored. In this study, for the first time, a field disturbance and observation device, integrated with multiple sensors, is used to simulate the disturbance process of mining on seabed sediments in the polymetallic nodule area of the western Pacific Ocean at a depth of 5700 m. The impact of the process of stroking and lifting on the bottom sediment in the polymetallic nodule area is 30 times higher than that caused by the waves or the current. The time for turbidity to return to normal after the increase is about 30 min, and the influence distance of a disturbance to the bottom bed on turbidity is about 126 m. The time it takes for density to return to normal is about four hours, and the influence is about 1000 m. At the same time, the resuspension of the bottom sediment leads to an increase in density anomaly and salinity. Moreover, suspended sediments rich in metal ions may react with dissolved oxygen in water, resulting in a decrease in the dissolved oxygen content and an increase in ORP. During the observation period, the phenomenon of a deep-sea reciprocating current is found, which may cause the suspended sediment generated by the continuous operation of the mining vehicle to produce suspended sediment clouds in the water near the bottom of the mining area. This could lead to the continuous increase in nutrients in the water near the bottom of the mining area and the continuous reduction in dissolved oxygen, which will have a significant impact on the local ecological environment. Therefore, the way mining vehicles dig and wash in water bodies could have a marked impact on the marine environment. We suggest adopting the technology of suction and ore separation on mining ships, as well as bringing the separated sediment back to the land for comprehensive utilization.

Oceanic oxygen levels are decreasing significantly in response to global climate change; however, the microbial diversity and ecological functional responses to dissolved oxygen (DO) in the open ocean are largely unknown. Here, we present prokaryotic distribution coupled with physical and biogeochemical variables and DO gradients from the surface to near the bottom of a water column along an approximately 12,000-km transect from 13° N to 18° S in the Tropical Pacific Ocean. Nitrate (11.42%), temperature (10.90%), pH (10.91%), silicate (9.34%), phosphate (4.25%), chlorophyll a (3.66%), DO (3.50%), and salinity (3.48%) significantly explained the microbial community variations in the studied area. A distinct microbial community composition broadly corresponding to the water masses formed vertically. Additionally, distinct ecotypes of Thaumarchaeota and Nitrospinae belonging to diverse phylogenetic clades that coincided with specific vertical niches were observed. Moreover, the correlation analysis revealed large-scale natural feedback in which chlorophyll a (organic matter) promoted Thaumarchaeotal biomass at depths that subsequently coupled with Nitrospina, produced and replenished nitrate for phytoplankton productivity at the surface. Low DO also favored Thaumarchaeota growth and fueled nitrate production.

The evolution and driving mechanism of the South Asian summer monsoon (SASM) are still poorly understood. We here present a 12-Myr long SASM record by analyzing the strontium and neodymium isotopic composition of detrital components at IODP Exp. 359 Site U1467 from the northern Indian Ocean. The provenance investigation demonstrates that more dust enriched in εNd from northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula was transported to the study site by monsoonal and Shamal winds during the summer monsoon season. A two-step weakening of the SASM wind since ~12 Ma is proposed based on the εNd record. This observational phenomenon is supported by climate modeling results, demonstrating that the SASM evolution was mainly controlled by variations in the gradient between the Mascarene High and the Indian Low, associated with meridional shifts of the Hadley Cell and the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which were caused by interhemispheric ice-sheet growth since the Middle Miocene.

Enhanced silicate weathering induced by the uplift of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau (HTP) has been considered as the major cause of pCO2 decline and Cenozoic cooling. However, this hypothesis remains to be validated, largely due to the lack of a reliable reconstruction of the HTP weathering flux. Here, we present a 37-million-year record of the difference in the seawater radiogenic neodymium isotopic composition (ΔεNd) of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites and Fe-Mn crusts between the northern and central Indian Ocean, which indicates the contribution of regional weathering input from the South Asian continent to the Indian Ocean. The results show a long-term increase in ΔεNd and thus provide the first critical evidence of enhanced South Asian weathering input since the late Eocene. The evolution coincided well with major pulses of surface uplift in the HTP and global climatic transitions. Our foraminiferal εNd record suggests that tectonic uplift and silicate weathering in South Asia, especially in the Himalayas, might have played a significant role in the late Cenozoic cooling.

The speciation of dissolved trace metals is important due to its closely linkage with toxicity and bioavailability in seawater. We investigate the speciation of dissolved Pb (DPb) and Cd (DCd), and their spatial distributions in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, China. The results showed that the organic complexation of DPb and DCd accounted for 35 ± 14 % and 75 ± 10 % of their dissolved concentrations, respectively. The measured free ion activity of Cd ({Cd2 +}) and organic ligand concentration of Cd ([LCd]) were highest near the Yellow River mouth, where the free ion activity of Pb ({Pb2+}) were also found to be the highest. In this study, both {Pb2+} and {Cd2+} did not exceed the toxicity threshold, and they were identified not toxic in the waters of the Yellow Sea and Bohai Seas, but biological accumulation effects potentially exist.

Arctic sea ice retreat is linked to extrapolar thermal energy import, while the potential impact of pan-Arctic river heat discharge on sea-ice loss has been unresolved. We reconstructed the Holocene history of Arctic sea ice and Russian pan-Arctic river heat discharge, combining ice-rafted debris records and sedimentation rates from the East Siberian Arctic Shelf with a compilation of published paleoclimate and observational data. In the mid-Holocene, the early summer (June-July) solar insolation was higher than that during the late Holocene, which led to a larger heat discharge of the Russian pan-Arctic rivers and contributed to more Arctic sea ice retreat. This intensified decline of early-summer sea ice accelerated the melting of sea ice throughout the summertime by lowering regional albedos. Our findings highlight the important impact of the larger heat discharge of pan-Arctic rivers, which can reinforce Arctic sea-ice loss in the summer in the context of global warming.

Uranium, thorium, and protactinium radionuclides in marine sediments are important proxies for understanding the earth's environmental evolution. Conventional solution-based methods, which typically involve isotope spike preparation, concentrated acid sample digestion, column chemistry, and mass spectrometry, allow precise but time-consuming and costly measurements of these nuclide concentrations (i.e., 230Th and 231Pa). In this work, we have established an efficient method for 230Th and 231Pa measurement of marine sediments down to the picogram-per-gram level without purification and enrichment. Our method first transforms a small amount of thermally decomposed sediments (∼0.1-0.2 g) to homogeneous silicate glass using a melt quenching technique and then analyzes the glass with laser ablation multicollector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Standard sample bracketing with isotope-spike-calibrated glass standards prepared in this study was used to correct for instrumental fractionation during measurement. It is demonstrated that our method can accurately determine the U-Th-Pa concentrations of typical marine sediments in the late Pleistocene with precision of a few percent. Compared with the conventional solution-based methods, the turnover time of sample preparation and measurement with our established protocol is greatly reduced, facilitating future application of U-series radionuclides in reconstructing oceanic processes at high temporal and spatial resolution.

In this study, we explored the heavy metal elements in 42 surface sediments from the Malacca Strait in terms of distribution, controlling factors, environmental quality, and primary sources. An analysis of grain size revealed finer sediments near the coast of Malaysia, which gradually thickened toward offshore. In addition, heavy metal elements were abundantly distributed near the coastal area of Malaysia, with a gradual decrease toward the sea; their content increased within waters close to the Perak estuary. Source analysis of heavy metals showed that Cr, Hg, Zn, Cd, and Cu were mostly derived from natural weathering, and their distribution was significantly influenced by sediment grain size. As and Pb were affected by human activities. The environmental quality assessment results showed that Cu, Cr, Cd, and Zn in our study regions were pollution-free. Pb elements showed low-to-moderate pollution, and Hg showed a certain degree of ecological risk due to its high toxicity coefficient. The content of As elements in surface sediments increased significantly when compared to the background value, with several evaluation methods indicating a high-risk index. According to these findings, the area near the mouth of the Perak River is the most polluted, followed by the surrounding coastal areas.

Trace metals in Laptev and East Siberian Sea sediments were analyzed to examine the element distribution pattern and to assess sediment contamination using contamination indices. The maximum Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, and As concentrations occurred in the deeper parts of the East Siberian and Laptev Seas and the estuarine shelves of the Lena and Yana Rivers, and a high Cd content was observed in the sediment of the eastern part of the East Siberian Sea. The increased Cd concentration could be a result of the large number of phytoplankton supplied by the highly productive waters of the Bering Sea and the sorption capacity of Cd precipitation on Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides in seawater. The mean enrichment factors and geoaccumulation index values for Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd showed no contamination by these metals at any sampling locations; however, slight As enrichment was found, possibly originating from natural sources.
