RESUMEN

Magnesium sulphate in concentrations of 25-50 mM induced reproducible increase in titers of extracellular measles virus (by 0.5-2.0 1g TCD50/0.5 ml) in Japanese quail embryo cells. MgSO4 effect was observed with all methods of cell cultivation: stationary, roller, or on microcarriers. Its effect was associated not with its stabilizing influence on the extracellular virus but rather with the stimulation of the synthesis of intracellular viral proteins.

RESUMEN

The pathological process typical of measles and mumps infections was reproduced clinically and morphologically in 250 experimental guinea pigs infected into the anterior eye chamber with different strains of measles and mumps viruses. The intraocular inoculation of measles virus induced in guinea pigs the signs of iridocyclitis and follicular conjunctivitis, whereas inoculation of mumps virus induced dacryoadenitis as well as iridocyclitis and follicular conjunctivitis. The severity of the reproduced process and its dynamics correlated with the pathogenicity of measles and mumps virus strains used in the experiment. The specificity of pathological changes observed in the eye structures was verified virologically by the isolation of virus from the eye membranes and the presence of virus-neutralizing antibodies in the blood sera of the animals.

RESUMEN

Six different methods were used for examinations for the presence of antibodies to mumps virus in 43 sera of donors varying in ages from 18 to 58 years. Judging by the percentage of positive results, most sensitive tests included: radial hemolysis (95.3), neutralization (88.4-81.4), immunofluorescence (83.7). Comparison of the results obtained in these tests revealed high correlation coefficients of antibody titres. The lowest number of positive results was obtained in lectin-neuraminidase test and hemagglutination-inhibition test (51.2% and 32.6%, respectively).

RESUMEN

The time of persistence of measles antigen was studied in Macaca mulatta and green monkeys inoculated intracerebrally with the vaccine L-16 strain of measles virus and its two genetically homologous variants. Two clones differing in their neurovirulence were used. The results of the study showed correlation between the time of the antigen persistence in the central nervous system and the severity of morphological changes.
