Stunting is a significant public health problem in low- and middle-income countries. This study assessed the prevalence of stunting and associated risk factors of stunting among preschool and school-going children in flood-affected areas of Pakistan. A cross-sectional study was conducted by visiting 656 households through multi-stage sampling. Respondent's anthropometric measurements, socio-demographic information and sanitation facilities were explored. A logistic regression model was used to determine determinants of stunting, controlling for all possible confounders. The overall prevalence of stunting in children was 40.5%, among children 36.1% boys and 46.3% of girls were stunted. The prevalence of stunting in under-five children was 50.7%. Female children (OR=1.35, 95% CI:0.94-2.0), children aged 13-24 months (OR=6.5, 95% CI: 3.0-13.9), mothers aged 15-24 years (OR=4.4, 95% CI: 2.6-7.2), joint family (OR=2.1, 95% CI: 1.4-3.0) did not have access to improved drinking water (OR=3.3, 95% CI: 1.9-5.9), and the toilet facility (OR=2.8, 95% CI, 1.9-4.3), while the children from district Nowshera (OR=1.7, 95% CI: 0.9-3.2) were significantly (P<0.05) associated in univariate analysis. The regression model revealed that child age, maternal age, family type, quality of water, and toilet facility, were the significant (P<0.05) factors contributing to child stunting in the flood-hit areas. Identification of key factors might be helpful for policymakers in designing comprehensive community-based programs for the reduction of stunting in flood-affected areas. In disasters such as flood, the detrimental consequences of the stunting problem could be even more on children. In several lately published studies, the association between single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP, rs12252) of IFITM3 and the risk of influenza is inconsistent. To further understand the association between the SNP of IFITM3 and the risk of influenza, we searched related studies in five databases including PubMed published earlier than 9 November 2017. Ten sets of data from nine studies were included and data were analysed by Revman 5.0 and Stata 12.0 in our updated meta-analysis, which represented 1365 patients and 5425 no-influenza controls from four different ethnicities. Here strong association between rs12252 and influenza was found in all four genetic models. The significant differences in the allelic model (C vs. T: odds ratio (OR) = 1.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.03-1.79), P = 0.03) and homozygote model (CC vs. TT: OR = 10.63, 95% CI (3.39-33.33), P < 0.00001) in the Caucasian subgroup were discovered, which is very novel and striking. Also novel discoveries were found in the allelic model (C vs. T: OR = 1.37, 95% CI (1.08-1.73), P = 0.009), dominant model (CC + CT vs. TT: OR = 1.48, 95% CI (1.08-2.02), P = 0.01) and homozygote model (CC vs. TT: OR = 2.84, 95% CI (1.36-5.92), P = 0.005) when we compared patients with mild influenza with healthy individuals. Our meta-analysis suggests that single-nucleotide T to C polymorphism of IFITM3 associated with increasingly risk of severe and mild influenza in both Asian and Caucasian populations.
RESUMEN
Acid and pepsin-soluble collagen (ASC and PSC, respectively) were extracted from cod (Gadus macrocephaius) skin, and yields of 37.36 and 55.96% were obtained for ASC and PSC, respectively. The total yield of ASC and PSC was 93.92%, based on the lyophilized dry weight, which is higher than that obtained from other sources. Electrophoresis revealed that both ASC and PSC consisted of two different α-chains (α1 and α2), which were characterized as type I collagen. Analysis of amino acids showed that both the ASC and PSC contained imino acids (216.1 and 190.6 residues/1000 residues, respectively) and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra of both collagens were similar with pepsin hydrolysis having no effect on their triple-helical structure. The thermal denaturation temperature of ASC and PSC, as measured by viscometry, was 26.8° and 25.6°C, respectively.

The DNA-binding one zinc finger (Dof) family is a classic plant-specific zinc-finger transcription factor family, which is involved in many important processes, including seed maturation and germination, plant growth and development, and light responses. Investigation of the Medicago truncatula genome revealed 42 putative Dof genes, each of which holds one Dof domain. These genes were classified into four groups based on phylogenetic analysis, which are similar to the groups reported for Arabidopsis and rice. Based on genome duplication analysis, it was found that the MtDof genes were distributed on all chromosomes and had expanded through tandem gene duplication and segmental duplication events. Two main duplication regions were identified, one from tandem duplication and another from segmental duplication. By analyzing high-throughput sequencing data from M. truncatula, we found that most of the MtDof genes showed specific expression patterns in different tissues. According to cis-regulatory element analysis, these MtDof genes are regulated by different cis-acting motifs, which are important for the functional divergence of the MtDof genes in different processes. Thus, using genome-wide identification, evolution, and expression pattern analysis of the Dof genes in M. truncatula, our study provides valuable information for understanding the potential function of the Dof genes in regulating the growth and development of M. truncatula.

PURPOSE: Emerging evidences indicate that dysregulated microRNAs are implicated in cancer tumorigenesis and progression. MicroRNA-9 (miR-9) has various expression patterns in diverse human cancers. However, its clinical significance in human non-small cell lung cancer has not yet been elucidated. In the present study, we detected the expression of miR-9 in non-small cell lung cancer and adjacent noncancerous tissues and explored its relationships with clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis. METHODS: Expression levels of miR-9 in 116 pairs of non-small cell lung cancer and adjacent normal tissues were detected by real-time quantitative RT-PCR assay. To determine its prognostic value, overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed using the Cox proportional hazard analysis. RESULTS: MiR-9 expression in non-small cell lung cancer tissues was significantly higher than that in adjacent normal tissues (p = 0.001), and its up-regulation was significantly correlated to advanced tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage (p < 0.001), tumor size (p = 0.013), and lymph node metastasis (p = 0.001). Furthermore, Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that high miR-9 expression clearly predicted poorer PFS (p < 0.001) and OS (p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, increased miR-9 expression was an independent prognostic factor for both PFS (p = 0.002) and OS (p = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: MiR-9 was up-regulated in non-small cell lung cancer tissues and correlated with adverse clinical features and unfavorable survival, indicating that miR-9 might be involved in non-small lung cancer progression and could serve as a promising biomarker for further risk stratification in the treatment of this cancer.

With the development of molecular marker technology, crop breeding has been accelerated by marker-assisted selection for the improvement of quantitative traits. However, due to the traits' polygenic nature, traditional marker-assisted selection methods are ill-suited for identification of quantitative trait loci. Genomic selection (GS) was introduced into crop breeding to achieve more accurate predictions by considering all genes or markers simultaneously. We used dozens of sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers for genotyping soybean varieties, and we identified markers associated with hundred-seed weight. The best linear unbiased predictor and Bayesian liner regression methods were used to construct GS models to predict the hundred-seed weight trait based upon genotype information for trait selection. Both GS models showed good prediction performance in soybean, as the correlation coefficient between genomic estimated breeding values and true breeding values was as high as 0.904. This indicated that GS was performed effectively based on dozens of SCAR markers in soybean; these markers were of low density but easily detectable. Therefore, the combination of GS modeling and highly effective molecular marker technology involving SCAR markers can facilitate genetic breeding in soybean. This approach may also be suitable for genetic selection in other crops, such as wheat, maize, and rice.

The gametocidal (Gc) chromosome from Aegilops spp induces chromosome mutation, which is introduced into common wheat as a tool of chromosome manipulation for genetic improvement. The Gc chromosome functions similar to a restriction-modification system in bacteria, in which DNA methylation is an important regulator. We treated root tips of wheat carrying Gc chromosomes with the hypomethylation agent 5-azacytidine; chromosome breakage and micronuclei were observed in these root tips. The frequency of aberrations differed in wheat containing different Gc chromosomes, suggesting different functions inducing chromosome breakage. Gc chromosome 3C caused the greatest degree of chromosome aberration, while Gc chromosome 3C(SAT) and 2C caused only slight chromosome aberration. Gc chromosome 3C induced different degrees of chromosome aberration in wheat varieties Triticum aestivum var. Chinese Spring and Norin 26, demonstrating an inhibition function in common wheat.

Diploid Thinopyrum elongatum, a wild relative of wheat, contains many agronomically desirable traits and has potential for increasing genetic variability and introducing desirable characters in this crop. Few molecular markers are available for rapid screening of T. elongatum genome segments in the wheat genetic background. We used 36 RAPD primers and 33 ISSR primers to screen for polymorphisms in the common wheat variety Chinese Spring and in T. elongatum. Two RAPD markers and one ISSR marker, designated OPF03(1407), LW10(1487) and UBC841(701), were identified and were specific for the T. elongatum E genome. Three pairs of primers flanking these specific sequences were designed to produce SCAR markers. All three SCAR markers were T. elongatum E genome-specific. Two of these SCAR markers, SCAR(807) and SCAR(577), were present in all seven T. elongatum chromosomes, while SCAR(839) was specific for T. elongatum chromosomes 2E and 3E. These newly developed SCAR markers should be useful for detecting alien genome chromatin or chromosome segments in the genetic background of common wheat.

Aqueous, organic and alcoholic extracts of over 100 samples of 60 species of Kallawaya medicinal herbs representing 30 plant families were assayed to compare their toxicity and ability to protect MT-2 T-lymphoblastoid cells from the cytopathic effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The results are reported as a therapeutic index (TI) which was > 25 for eighteen species, including seven > 50 and one > 100. The anti-HIV activity resided primarily in the aqueous rather than in the organic extracts and was concentrated in plants used in ethnomedicine to treat lung and liver diseases.
PIP: Plants are a rich source of anti-viral substances. The National Cancer Institute therefore annually screens about 1500 species from Africa, Southeast Asia, and South and Central America, but not Bolivia, for anti-HIV activity. Several unique compounds with anti-HIV activity have emerged from the program. The Kallawaya Indians of Bolivia follow a medical tradition from the Tiahuanaco (400-1145), Mollo (1145-1435), Inca (1438-1532), Spanish (1532-1825), and Bolivian Republic (from 1825) which is only recently starting to be reported. They use approximately 900 of the more than 2000 medicinal plants found across Bolivia. Aqueous, organic, and alcoholic extracts of more than 100 samples of 60 species of Kallawaya medicinal herbs representing 30 plant families were assayed to compare their toxicity and ability to protect MT-2 T-lymphoblastoid cells from the cytopathic effects of HIV. The anti-HIV activity resided mainly in the aqueous extracts and was concentrated in plants used in ethnomedicine to treat lung and liver diseases.
