RESUMEN

In the cropping systems that integrate the corn crop, the insertion of Crotalaria ochroleuca G. Don is predominantly intercropped. In this context, there is a need to observe herbicides that present selectivity for this sunn hemp species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of pre and post-emergent herbicides on C. ochroleuca. Two field experiments were conducted in randomized blocks with four replications, involving the pre-emergence and post-emergence application of different herbicide treatments. For the pre-emergent ones, amicarbazone, atrazine and flumioxazin provided phytotoxicity higher than 90% and, consequently, low plant biomass. On the other hand, acetochlor and s-metolachlor did not cause phytotoxicity and did not affect the dry mass of crotalaria. In post-emergence, atrazine + mesotrione showed phytotoxicity >95%, followed by nicosulfuron and 2.4-D with phytotoxicity between 50-60%, whereas tembotrione did not cause injury to the plants. Thus, it was found that among the pre-emergent, acetochlor and s-metolachlor were selective, and for the emerging powders, only tembotrione was the most selective for all parameters analyzed.

RESUMEN

Enterolithiasis is an uncommon entity in humans but frequently seen in equine mammals. A primary enterolith is a mineral concretion formed within the gastrointestinal tract due to the alteration in the anatomical integrity due to variety of conditions resulting in intestinal stasis. We report a patient with small intestinal obstruction due to a primary enterolith. A 65-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with central colicky abdominal pain, absolute constipation followed by vomiting. An enterolith located in distal ileum causing small intestinal obstruction was established with the aid of abdominal X-ray radiograph and computed tomography. Exploratory laparotomy was performed to extract the enterolith and to resect a strictured proximal jejunal segment which was suspected to be the original site of enterolith formation. Chemical analysis of the enterolith supports the speculation of a proximally formed primary enterolith eventually migrating to the site of impaction in the terminal ileum.

RESUMEN

Objectives: To evaluate the association of physical and functional measures with sarcopenia in moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to establish cutoff points for sarcopenia screening. Methods: The study included COPD with and without sarcopenia, of both sexes who were over 50 years old. Participants were assessed for lung function, body composition, grip strength, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), 5-repetition, 10-repetition and 30-s sit-to-stand tests (5STS, 10STS, and 30STS, respectively). In addition, 6-min walking test, respiratory muscular strength, and physical activity level were tested. Results: The study had 35 participants, 24 men (68.6%) and moderate COPD (51.4%). COPD-sarcopenia showed lower values in lean mass, body fat and body mass alongside lower performance in 10 and 30 STS tests, SPPB and gait speed compared to non-sarcopenic group. The cutoff points with better sensitivity and specificity to identify sarcopenia were 10.88 and 34.14 s, 15 repetitions, and 10 points in the 5STS, 10STS, 30STS, and SPPB, respectively. The comparison of the receiver operating curves evidenced no differences between the functional tests. Only 30STS and SPPB showed acceptable discriminatory power. Conclusion: Functional tests, especially 30STS and SPPB, are simple and affordable tools for screening sarcopenia in COPD with moderate obstruction.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the availability of calcium (Ca2+) from two pharmaceutical forms (oral and intravaginal) and its effect on the metabolism of ruminants. The study was carried out at the experimental farm of the Federal University of Pelotas. Twenty-four lactating ewes were randomly divided into 4 groups: treatment device (TD); control device (DC); oral treatment (OT); and oral control (OC). Treated animals received calcium formate and magnesium chloride, evaluations were performed after administration of the treatments. Total calcium (CaT), magnesium (Mg), total plasma proteins (PPT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), urea, albumin and urinary pH, and clinical examination were performed on all animals. Serum CaT, CaI and Mg levels differed between the groups (P≤ 0.05), the animals in the DT and DC groups differed in the three evaluations, the DT group had the highest mean values, being significantly equal to the OT group. There was no difference in the serum concentrations of PPT, AST, GGT, Albumin, Urea and urinary pH. In conclusion, the blood availability of CaT, CaI and Mg is the same when administration of calcium and magnesium formate is intravaginal or orally, without altering other metabolic parameters evaluated.(AU)

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze MMP-1 transcript levels in periodontal tissues of rats that underwent orthodontic treatment using potassium diclofenac and dexamethasone at different stages of tooth movement. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: The sample comprised of ninety male Wistar rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A closed nickel-titanium coil spring was used to apply a force of 50 cN to move the maxillary right first molars mesially. One group received daily doses of 0.9% saline solution, the second group received daily doses of 5 mg/kg potassium diclofenac, and the third group received daily doses of 0.5 mg/kg dexamethasone. Tooth movement was observed on days 0, 1, 3, 7, and 14. MMP-1 transcript levels were evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction and the results were compared between groups by three-way ANOVA, with a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: Transcript levels increased in groups that received the coil spring treatment on all days of the experiment. MMP-1 expression was found to be decreased in groups treated with potassium diclofenac and dexamethasone compared to that in the control group, on days 1, 3, 5, and 7. CONCLUSIONS: The application of orthodontic forces significantly increased MMP-1 transcript levels. The use of anti-inflammatory drugs may have an inhibitory effect on MMP-1 expression.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Comorbidities are common in COPD and have been associated with reduced health status, increased health care utilization, all-cause hospitalization, and mortality. There is a scarcity of data on the relationship between comorbidities and functional capacity. OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the impact of comorbidities on functional capacity of COPD patients. METHODS: a cross-sectional study was conducted at two teaching hospitals in Fortaleza, Brazil. The functional capacity was assessed by spirometry and the 6-min walking test (6MWT). The health status was assessed by the St. George's respiratory questionnaire (SGRQ) and the COPD assessment test (CAT). The sample was stratified as having "none", "one" and "two or three" comorbidities groups. One-way ANOVA was used to compare means of the three groups and a multiple linear regression was run to predict the impact of comorbidities on 6MWT. RESULTS: Comorbidities (hypertension, coronary disease and diabetes) were found in 54% of the studied patients. The mean age of the 79 patients was 67±8 years and 55% were male. CAT scores increased from "no comorbidity" (17.9±7.7) to "one comorbidity" (22.8±6.8) and "two or three comorbidities" groups (24.2±10.2). A post hoc test showed a significant difference in the "no comorbidity" compared to the "two or three comorbidities" groups (p=0.01). The distance walked by the patients decreased from "no comorbidity" (386.1±83.2m) to "one comorbidity" (350±98m) and "two or three comorbidities" groups (312.6±91m). A post hoc test showed significant difference in the "no comorbidity" compared to "two or three comorbidities" groups (p=0.007). Numbers of comorbidities were independently associated with the 6MWT adjusting for age, severity of COPD and CAT scores. CONCLUSION: in the studied sample, the presence of comorbidities contributed to impair exercise capacity in patients with COPD.

RESUMEN

We describe the first postnatal diagnosis of a child from Central Brazil with de novo cytogenetic alterations in 13q showing malformations of the brain, eyes, distal limbs, and genitourinary tract, and severe intellectual disability. The karyotype was a constitutive 46,XX,r(13)[77]/45,XX,-13[17]/46,XX,idic r(13)[6]. Interphase and metaphase fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses also showed the absence of 13qter and the presence of 13q14.3 in the cells with r(13), and chromosome microarray analysis detected a 15.39 Mb deletion in chromosome region 13q32.3-q34. This study is intended as the registry of a rare case of chromosomal rearrangement involving chromosome 13 in Central Brazil. Further studies are needed to define whether genetic haploinsufficiency is associated with each major 13q deletion anomaly.

RESUMEN

Serogroup B Neisseria meningitidis (MenB) is a major cause of invasive disease in early childhood worldwide. The only MenB vaccine available in Brazil was produced in Cuba and has shown unsatisfactory efficacy when used to immunize millions of children in Brazil. In the present study, we compared the specific functional antibody responses evoked by the Cuban MenB vaccine with a standard vaccine against diphtheria (DTP: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) after primary immunization and boosting of mice. The peak of bactericidal and opsonic antibody titers to MenB and of neutralizing antibodies to diphtheria toxoid (DT) was reached after triple immunization with the MenB vaccine or DTP vaccine, respectively. However, 4 months after immunization, protective DT antibody levels were present in all DTP-vaccinated mice but in only 20% of the mice immunized against MenB. After 6 months of primary immunization, about 70% of animals still had protective neutralizing DT antibodies, but none had significant bactericidal antibodies to MenB. The booster doses of DTP or MenB vaccines produced a significant antibody recall response, suggesting that both vaccines were able to generate and maintain memory B cells during the period studied (6 months post-triple immunization). Therefore, due to the short duration of serological memory induced by the MenB vaccine (VA-MENGOC-BC® vaccine), its use should be restricted to outbreaks of meningococcal disease.

RESUMEN

Fish (Astyanax sp.) were exposed to water samples from the Arroio Saldanha, locality of an oil spill, and the Barigui River (upstream and downstream of the confluence of the river and Arroio Saldanha), Brazil. Histopathological and biochemical biomarkers, as acetylcholinesterase (AchE), ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities, lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels, and amounts of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon residues (PAHs) in bile were evaluated. PAHs, metals, and surfactants were investigated in the water samples. CAT and GST activities increased in the Arroio Saldanha sample, whereas CAT activity and LPO levels were increased in the upstream and downstream sites. The results suggested a toxic action of the free radicals and disturbance of the antioxidant defense mechanisms. However, the EROD and AchE activities were not affected. Histopathology studies showed severe lesions. The oil is still bioavailable to biota, moreover, other pollution sources continue to affect the water in the Barigui River.

RESUMEN

The case of idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis in a 20 year old male is presented. Iron deficiency anemia, recurrent hemoptysis and micronodular infiltrate in lower lung areas were the most important signs observed. The transbronchial biopsy showed alveolar and interstitial hemorrhage and hemosiderin in the pulmonary macrophages. Treatment was started with prednisone, but the addition of immunosuppressive drugs (cyclophosphamide) was needed, followed by a clinical remission.
