The tests on rats with experimental pneumonia showed that bemithyl (50 mg/kg, i.p.) reduces lethal outcome frequency, decreases the accumulation of lactate in lung tissues, and impedes activation of lipid peroxidation.

[The effect of melatonin on the indices of biological age, on longevity and on the development of spontaneous tumors in mice]. / Vliianie melatonina na pokazateli biologicheskogo vozrasta, prodolzhitel'nost' zhizni i razvitie spontannykh opukholei u myshei.

Fifty female CBA mice were given melatonin with drinking water (20 mg/l) for 5 consecutive days monthly, beginning from the age of 6 months, until natural death. Another 50 intact mice were used as controls. Melatonin failed to significantly influence body weight or food consumption. Age-related switching-off of estrus function was delayed, body temperature decreased. Somewhat decreased motor activity did not affect physical one or endurance. Increase in life span led to higher spontaneous tumor incidence. Another experiment using 20 animals of the same line showed melatonin to inhibit free-radical processes. A conclusion was drawn that caution should be exercised before melatonin is recommended for long-term administration as a geroprotector.

There is a marked decrement in physical performance of those patients with III to IV grade obesity as compared to apparently healthy volunteers going into training. Deficient reserve capabilities of the system for utilization of oxygen and oxygen transport appear to be those factors determining and limiting physical fitness of obese individuals. Exercise testing involving recording of indices for gas exchange in real time appears to be a valuable method of diagnosis of particular features of oxygen supply in patients with III to IV grade obesity, providing a very helpful information.

[Effects of jejunoileal shunting operation on the blood circulation system in patients with morbid obesity]. / Vliianie operatsii eiunoileoshuntirovaniia na sistemu krovoobrashcheniia u bol'nykh s ozhireniem krainei stepeni.

With the use of radiocardiography, the indices of central hemodynamics were studied in 22 patients with III-IV degree morbid obesity who underwent the operation of jejunoileal shunting. A special attention should be paid to the state of the patients within the first 18 months after the operation, because at this period, reformation of the cardiovascular system is most pronounced. The formulas for prediction of the state of the central hemodynamics at the late postoperative period are suggested.

[Jejunoileal bypass in the prevention and treatment of clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis in patients with morbid obesity]. / Eiunoileoshuntirovanie v profilaktike i lechenii klinicheskikh proiavlenii ateroskleroza u bol'nykh s rezko izbytochnoi massoi tela.

Jejunoileostomy effects on blood lipids and cardiovascular system were investigated in obese patients. They were found to lose 30% of their body mass within 6 postoperative months with parallel reduction in concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL cholesterol and apoprotein B. These changes persisted for 4.5 years of the follow-up. The surgery in males has a more pronounced effect on blood lipids than in females. Significant changes were not registered in post- and preoperative levels of HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein A-1. Jejunoileostomy promoted a fall in blood pressure, a rise in exercise tolerance, alleviation of atherosclerosis symptoms.

[The dynamic electrocardiogram in the late period after the surgical treatment of obesity patients]. / Dinamika élektrokardiogrammy v otdalennye sroki posle khirurgicheskogo lecheniia bol'nykh ozhireniem.

An analysis is presented of ECG of 68 patients with obesity (grade III-IV) before the operation of jejunoileal shunting and 1-2, 3-5 and 6-10 years after surgery. It was found that the main changes in the cardiovascular system occur during the first 2 years, i.e. during the period of body mass reduction. The importance of ECG in the diagnosis of hypertrophy of different compartments of the heart in obesity of grade III-IV.

The authors substantiate the employment of radiocardiography for the examination of the cardiohemodynamics in patients with obesity of the III and IV grades. On the basis of a study of the main hemodynamic indices in patients with extreme obesity a trial is made to evaluate the pathogenesis of cardiac insufficiency in these patients.
