RESUMEN
In this study, 25 randomly selected CT scans of temporal bones performed in a busy radiology department were retrospectively analysed with particular attention paid to the number of sections passing through the orbits. Thirteen examinations were found to include sections through the eyes, thereby resulting in unnecessary radiation to the lens. The importance of proper scanning technique is therefore emphasised. The mean radiation dose to the eyes in axial CT examination of the temporal bones was determined by the use of thermoluminescent dosimeters taped to the eyelids. The authors concluded that appropriate scanning techniques can reduce the radiation dose to the orbit whilst imaging the temporal bone. All the relevant information can usually be obtained without any of the sections passing through the lens. The radiation dose to the lens was increased when additional sections were performed to obtain information about the jugular fossa.

The authors report a case of an antral mucocele secondary to obstruction of the antral ostium by a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Antral mucoceles are rare, and this is the first report of one such caused by a nasal lymphoma.

We report a case of an antral mucocoele secondary to the obstruction of its ostium by metastatic endometrial carcinoma. This is the first report of such a cause for a mucocoele, and for a metastasis from such a tumour in the head and neck.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the Midland Institute of Otology (MIO) a meeting was held in the Belfry Hotel, West Midlands, 19-21 September 1997. The meeting comprised an excellent academic conference, social events and a golf tournament. A report on the academic conference has been published (Stansbie and Pahor, 1997). The MIO has been established to further the cause of ENT in the Midlands and it has succeeded in its aim to a great extent. An historical overview of the Institute is of interest and would serve perhaps as a model for similar organizations, especially in the provinces. The Institute was the brainchild of William Stirk Adams. He remained the President from the conception of the Institute till his death. It is befitting to present a biography of such a dedicated personality.

Tuberculosis of the parotid gland is rare. It cannot be distinguished d form a parotid tumour by clinical examination alone, so surgical exploration has usually been required for diagnosis. We present a case with the same diagnostic dilemma.

Pre-operative Computerized Tomography was performed prior to second look operations in 10 cases to check for cholesteatoma after combined approach tympanoplasty. Three independent opinions were obtained on the CT scans and compared with the operative findings. This small series failed to demonstrate reliable pre-operative radiological detection of cholesteatoma. There was disappointing inter-observer agreement in interpretation of the CT scans.

Small chemodectomas in the middle ear cavity can be recognised by otoscopy, but only radiology will show if the jugular bulb is involved. This assessment can be difficult, but largely governs the surgical approach. Magnetic resonance is a valuable adjunct to CT, providing some tissue characterisation. The relative value of various imaging techniques is discussed.

The apparent tendency of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma to involute with age has been known for many years but firm evidence of this has been lacking. This case report uses computerized tomography to provide the first documented evidence of this involution.
