RESUMEN

Extreme weather events, such as severe droughts, pose a threat to the sustainability of beef cattle by limiting the growth and development of forage plants and reducing the available pasture for animals. Thus, the search for forage species that are more tolerant and adapted to soil water deficit conditions is an important strategy to improve food supply. In this study, we propose utilizing the mathematical concept of the Manhattan distance to assess the variations in the morphological variables of tropical forage grasses under water-limited conditions. This study aimed to select genotypes of tropical forage grasses under different water stress levels (moderate or severe) at this distance and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Nine varieties from five species were examined. Forage grasses were grown in 12-L pots under three soil irrigation regimes [100% pot capacity-PC (well-irrigated control), 60% PC (moderate drought stress), and 25% PC (severe drought stress)] with four replicates. Drought stress treatments were applied for 25 days during the forage grass tillering and stalk elongation phases. After exposure to drought stress, the growth and morphological traits of forage plants were evaluated. The results show that the use of the Manhattan distance combined with TOPSIS helps in the genotypic selection of more stable tropical forage grass varieties when comparing plants exposed to moderate and severe drought conditions in relation to the nonstressful environment (control). The 'ADR 300', 'Pojuca', 'Marandu', and 'Xaraés' varieties show greater stability when grown in a greenhouse and subjected to water stress environments. The selected forage varieties can be used as parents in plant breeding programs, allowing us to obtain new drought-resistant genotypes.

RESUMEN

The genus Gossypium has important ethnobotanical and economic value for Amazonian Native Communities (A.N.C.). However, little research has been undertaken on the distribution and genetic diversity of cotton populations maintained in the Peruvian rainforest. This work aims to present the first report on the genetic diversity of Gossypium spp. populations in the A.N.C. of the province of La Convención, Cusco-Peru. The methodology was based on exploring, collecting, identifying, and characterizing the Gossypium populations present in the A.N.C. Twenty-six descriptors were evaluated (9 quantitative and 17 qualitative), and with this information, distribution, correlation, and principal component (PC) analyses were carried out. As a result, plants of two species [G. barbadense L. (44 samples) and G. hirsutum L. (19 samples)], one variety [G. barbadense var. brasiliensis (75 samples)], and three previously unidentified variations (9 samples) were identified. Altogether, 147 samples were collected. G. barbadense var. brasiliensis, which was always found in association with other economic crops within an altitude range of 338 to 1086 m, was the most predominant (51%), distributed in eleven A.N.C. and always in small plots (up to 2 ha). G. barbadense L. was cultivated between 397 and 1137 m of altitude in eight A.N.C. in plots of up to 3 ha in marginal lands. G. hirsutum L., with a smaller distribution (13%), was found between 334 and 497 m of altitude in only three communities; this species is cultivated in marginal areas throughout the year. The variability found for the first two PCs when considering the quantitative and qualitative descriptors was high (74.7%) and moderate (48.2%), respectively. When combining all the descriptors, the analysis showed that the first two PCs accounted for 51.8% of the total variability of the data. The PCs of the two types of data and their combination confirmed that the three populations found were grouped. The nine undefined samples were close to or intermediate between the described ones, showing that these samples may be the result of spontaneous crosses; as such, these samples need to be better evaluated with other tools for further definition. The information obtained shows that in the A.N.C. of Cusco-Peru, there is variability conserved by the inhabitants, who have been able to maintain and use these genotypes, even from their Amazonian indigenous ancestry, and the environment has been able to generate variability among the species, as will be highlighted in future works.

RESUMEN

The search for soybean genotypes more adapted to abiotic stress conditions is essential to boost the development and yield of the crop in Brazil and worldwide. In this research, we propose a new approach using the concept of distance (or similarity) in a vector space that can quantify changes in the morphological traits of soybean seedlings exposed to stressful environments. Thus, this study was conducted to select soybean genotypes exposed to stressful environments (saline or drought) using similarity based on Manhattan distance and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. TOPSIS is a multi-criteria decision method for selecting the best alternative using the concept of distance. The use of TOPSIS is essential because the genotypes are not absolutely similar in both treatments. That is, just the distance measure is not enough to select the best genotype simultaneously in the two stress environments. Drought and saline stresses were induced by exposing seeds of 70 soybean genotypes to -0.20 MPa iso-osmotic solutions with polyethylene glycol-PEG 6000 (119.6 g L-1) or NaCl (2.36 g L-1) for 14 days at 25 °C. The germination rate, seedling length, and seedling dry matter were measured. We showed here how the genotypic stability of soybean plants could be quantified by TOPSIS when comparing drought and salinity conditions to a non-stressful environment (control) and how this method can be employed under different conditions. Based on the TOPSIS method, we can select the best soybean genotypes for environments with multiple abiotic stresses. Among the 70 tested soybean genotypes, RK 6813 RR, ST 777 IPRO, RK 7214 IPRO, TMG 2165 IPRO, 5G 830 RR, 98R35 IPRO, 98R31 IPRO, RK 8317 IPRO, CG 7464 RR, and LG 60177 IPRO are the 10 most stable genotypes under drought and saline stress conditions. Owing to high stability and gains with selection verified for these genotypes under salinity and drought conditions, they can be used as genitors in breeding programs to obtain offspring with higher resistance to antibiotic stresses.

RESUMEN

Periods of soil water stress have been recurrent in the Cerrado region and have become a growing concern for Brazilian tropical pasture areas. Thus, the search for forage grasses more tolerant to water stress has intensified recently in order to promote more sustainable livestock. In a greenhouse experiment, the degree of water stress tolerance of nine tropical forage grass cultivars was studied under different soil water regimes. The investigation followed a 9 × 3 factorial design in four randomized blocks. Nine cultivars from five species of perennial forage grasses were tested: Urochloa brizantha ('BRS Piatã', 'Marandu', and 'Xaraés'), Panicum maximum ('Aruana', 'Mombaça', and 'Tanzânia'), Pennisetum glaucum ('ADR 300'), Urochloa ruziziensis ('Comum'), and Paspalum atratum ('Pojuca'). These cultivars were grown in pots under three soil water regimes (high soil water regime-HSW (non-stressful condition), middle soil water regime-MSW (moderate water stress), and low soil water regime-LSW (severe water stress)). Plants were exposed to soil water stress for 25 days during the tillering and stalk elongation phases. Twelve tolerance indices, including tolerance index (TOL), mean production (MP), yield stability index (YSI), drought resistance index (DI), stress tolerance index (STI), geometric mean production (GMP), yield index (YI), modified stress tolerance (k1STI and k2STI), stress susceptibility percentage index (SSPI), abiotic tolerance index (ATI), and harmonic mean (HM), were calculated based on shoot biomass production under non-stressful (YP) and stressful (YS) conditions. Soil water stress decreased leaf area, plant height, tillering capacity, root volume, and shoot and root dry matter production in most cultivars, with varying degrees of reduction among tropical forage grasses. Based on shoot biomass production under controlled greenhouse conditions, the most water-stress-tolerant cultivars were P. maximum cv. Mombaça and cv. Tanzânia under the MSW regime and P. maximum cv. Aruana and cv. Mombaça under the LSW regime. P. maximum cv. Mombaça has greater adaptability and stability of shoot biomass production when grown under greenhouse conditions and subjected to soil water stress. Therefore, this forage grass should be tested under field conditions to confirm its forage production potential for cultivation in tropical regions with the occurrence of water stress. The MP, DI, STI, GMP, YI, k2STI, and HM tolerance indices were the most suitable for identifying forage grass cultivars with greater water stress tolerance and a high potential for shoot biomass production under LSW regime.

RESUMEN

Excessive rainfall in the soybean preharvest period can make mechanized crop harvesting technically and economically unfeasible, causing 100% losses in soybean grain yield. An alternative to reduce the economic losses of farmers would be using unharvested soybean crop residues as a source of nitrogen (N) for the subsequent corn crop. However, a question that still needs to be understood is whether the amount of N released from unharvested soybean residues (straw and grains) is sufficient to meet all the nutritional demand for this nutrient in the off-season corn. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of unharvested soybean crop residue persistence on the yield response of off-season corn crop (Zea mays L.) to the application of N fertilizer rates when grown in tropical Cerrado soils of medium and high fertility. Four simple corn hybrids (SYN7G17 TL, 30F53VYHR, B2433PWU, and AG 8700 PRO3) were grown in soils of medium fertility and medium acidity level (UFMS 1) and high fertility and low acidity level (UFMS 2) and fertilized with five of N fertilizer rates (0, 40, 80, 120, and 160 kg ha-1 of N) applied at 30 days after emergence (DAE). Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was used to investigate the interrelationships between the groups of independent (agricultural production areas, corn cultivars, and N application rates) and dependent (corn agronomic traits) variables. Crop residues remaining on the soil surface from soybeans not harvested and inoculated with Bradyrhizobium spp. can supply most of the nitrogen requirement of off-season corn grown in succession, especially in tropical soils of medium fertility. However, in high-fertility tropical soils, the maximum grain yield potential of off-season corn cultivars can be obtained with the application of mineral N fertilizer in supplement the amount of nitrogen released from unharvested soybean residues. Therefore, the N requirement depends on the corn cultivar and the agricultural production area. However, our results show that when off-season corn is grown on unharvested soybean residues, nitrogen fertilization in topdressing can be dispensed. The agricultural area with high fertility soil (UFMS 2) enhances the grain yield of the off-season corn crop. The corn cultivar AG 8700 PRO3 has a higher thousand-grain mass and high grain yield potential under Brazilian Cerrado conditions.

RESUMEN

This paper presents an innovative concept for the online application of Frequency Response Analysis (FRA). FRA is a well known technique that is applied to detect damage in electric machinery. As an offline technique, the machine under testing has to be removed from service-which may cause loss of production. Experimental adaptations of FRA to online operation are usually based on the use of passive high pass coupling-which, ideally, should provide attenuation to the grid voltage, and at the same time, allow the high frequency FRA signals to be injected at the machine. In practice, however, the passive coupling results in a trade-off between the required attenuation and the useful area obtained at the FRA spectra. This paper proposes the use of an active coupling system, based on power electronics, in order to cancel the grid voltage at the terminals of FRA equipment and allow its safe connection to an energized machine. The paper presents the basic concepts of FRA and the issue of online measurements. It also presents basic concepts about power electronics converters and the operating principles of the Modular Multilevel Converter, which enables the generation of an output voltage with low THD, which is important for tracking the grid voltage with minimum error.

RESUMEN

The rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis Müell. Arg.) is a species of significant economic interest in the natural rubber industry in Brazil and the world. This species presents recalcitrance to rooting, and its cuttings are difficult to propagate. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the pre-conditioning of rubber tree mini-cuttings with zinc on the improvement of the adventitious rooting of rootstocks. Mini-cuttings were standardized with 45 mm length and submitted to preconditioning by immersion of the mini-cutting base in solutions containing 0.00; 0.04; 0.08; 0.16; 0.32 and 0.64 mg L-1 of Zn, for 24 hours. The experimental design was randomized blocks with six treatments and four replicates of 10 mini-cuttings. The rubber tree mini-cuttings were placed in a fitotron-type growth chamber, at 25 °C, with 12-hour photoperiod, 5,000 K intensity, and 95% of relative air humidity, for 60 days. The survival rate, number of buds, percentage of mini-cuttings that had leaf abscission, the percentage of mini-cuttings with callogenesis in the root meristem, the percentage of rooted mini-cuttings, the number of primary roots and root length were evaluated. The highest values of survival rate, the number of buds, the number of primary roots, the percentage of mini-cuttings with callogenesis in the root meristem, the percentage of rooted mini-cuttings and root length were observed with 0.16 to 0.26 Mg L-1 of Zn. The use of zinc in the mini-cuttings of rubber tree reduces linearly the percentage of mini-cuttings that had leaf abscission and the formation of callogenesis in the root meristem.

A seringueira (Hevea brasiliensis Müell. Arg.)

The effects of intense cropping and potassium fertilization on potassium (K) dynamics and non-exchangeable K release from three lowland soils of Paraná State, Brazil, were investigated in this study. Samples of three lowland soils were fertilized or not with K and subjected to six successive croppings (soybeans, pearl millet, wheat, common beans, soybeans, and maize). The crops were grown in 8-L pots for 45 days, and at the end of the sixth cropping, the soil from each pot was sampled to the determination of soil K pools. The lowland soils differ in the ability to K supply to the plants in the short to medium term due to the wide range of origin material and the concentration of K in solution, exchangeable K, non-exchangeable K, and structural K. When the soils were not fertilized with K, the successive cropping resulted in continuous depletion process of non-exchangeable and exchangeable K; however, this depletion was less pronounced in soils with a higher potential buffer capacity of K. Non-exchangeable and exchangeable K concentrations were increased with the addition of K fertilizer, indicating the occurrence of K fixation in soil. The non-exchangeable K contribution to K nutrition of plants ranged from 44 to 69% in the treatments without the addition of K fertilizer, reporting the importance of non-exchangeable K pools in the supply of this nutrient to plants in agricultural production systems.

Pre-sprouted sugarcane seedlings, produced from 3.0 cm long mini-stems of the RB867515 variety, were transplanted 25 days after sprouting into 12 L plastic pots. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design, in a 2 × 5 factorial scheme: two inoculation treatments [without (control) and inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense] and five application rates of N fertilizer in topdressing (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg dm–3of N), with four repetitions. The inoculation with A. brasilense was carried out in transplanting the seedlings using 4 mL of the inoculum AzoTotal® per seedling, containing the strains AbV5 and AbV6. The nitrogen fertilization in topdressing was performed at 20 days after transplanting the seedlings as urea (45% of N). The results reported that the application of N fertilizer rates in topdressing resulted in a linear increase in plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves per plant, number of tillers and dry matter production of plants inoculated with A. brasilense. When the plants were not inoculated with A. brasilense, nitrogen fertilization resulted in an increase also in the number of leaves and tillers per plant. The use of A. brasilense inoculation in pre-sprouted sugarcane seedlings has a beneficial effect on the development of plants only when associated with nitrogen fertilization in topdressing. Sugarcane plants not fertilized with N have a negative response to inoculation with A. brasilense, indicating the occurrence of possible phytotoxic effects on plant development up to 60 days after transplanting.

The use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) associated with rhizobia may optimize the biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), decrease chemical fertilizer-N use and increase plant growth and yield of the bean crop. A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of co-inoculation of Rhizobium tropici and Azospirillum brasilense, and nitrogen fertilizer topdressing on nodulation, growth, and yield of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in a sandy soil from the Brazilian tropical savanna (Cerrado) region, during the two growing seasons (“spring-summer” and “summer-fall”). The experimental design was a split plot in randomized blocks with four replicates. Plots consisted of four inoculation treatment on seeds: control (non-inoculated); inoculation with Rhizobium tropici; inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense; and co-inoculation with R. tropici and A. brasilense; and subplots of five N rates in topdressing (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha <->1). The inoculation with R. tropici alone or combined with A. brasilense enhanced root nodulation and grain yield of the common beans when the crop was grown during the dry season in the Brazilian savanna region. Therefore, the positive response of inoculation with rhizobia and azospirilla on the grain yield is dependent of the environmental conditions during the growing season, especially the low rainfall rate by stimulating root nodulation. The inoculation with A. brasilense alone was not an efficient agronomic practice to be used in common beans cropping under Brazilian conditions, because resulting grain yield equivalent to the non-inoculated plants in the two growing seasons. The increase of N application rates inhibits the formation and growth of root nodules of the common beans. The optimal N application rate in topdressing for common beans grown in sandy soils from the Brazilian savanna region may range between 80 and 90 kg N ha <->1.(AU)

RESUMEN

Harnessing the beneficial potential of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria may be an alternative strategy to improve plant tolerance to drought stress. The effect of inoculation with Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Azospirillum brasilense either alone or in combination on the plant growth and drought tolerance of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill.] was investigated in this study in greenhouse conditions. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design in a 3 × 4 factorial: three irrigation regimes [100% of pot capacity-PC (well-watered control), 50% of PC (moderate stress) and 25% of PC (severe stress)] and four inoculation treatments [control (non-inoculated), inoculation with B. japonicum, inoculation with A. brasilense, and co-inoculation with B. japonicum and A. brasilense]. Leaf relative water content, cell membrane stability, root nodulation, plant growth, and morphophysiological indexes were recorded. The inoculation of soybean plants with B. japonicum and A.brasilense either alone or in combination improved leaf membrane stability under drought stress conditions when compared to non-inoculated plants; however, this lower damage to cell membranes was not sufficient to maintain the leaf water content of the plant under drought stress. Plants co-inoculated with B. japonicum and A.brasilense improved the root nodulation under severe drought conditions. Inoculation of B. japonicum and A. brasilense either alone or in combination reduced the pod abortion rate under moderate drought stress, but had no effect under severe drought stress. In summary, the co-inoculation of A. brasilense and B. japonicum alleviate adverse effects limited by drought stress to the growth of soybeans.Author: Please check and confirm that the authors [Elijanara Raissa Silva, Carlos Eduardo Silva Oliveira, Alan Mario Zuffo, Eduardo Pradi Vendruscolo] and their initials have been correctly identified and amend if necessary. The authors were correctly identified.

RESUMEN

Seeds of arugula (Eruca sativa Miller, cv. Cultivada), carrot (Daucus carota L., cv. Nantes), eggplant (Solanum melongena L., cv. Embú) and watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai cv. Crimson Sweet] were submitted to different osmotic potentials induced by polyethylene glycol(PEG) with the objective of evaluate the effects of drought stress on seed germination and initial seedling growth. Seeds were distributed in plastic boxes containing blotter paper, soaked with PEG solutions prepared with osmotic potentials 0.0 (control), 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 MPa and kept into a seed germinator, at 25 °C for 14 days. A completely randomized design in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme with four replicates of 50 seeds each was used. The results showed that by increasing of the osmotic potential level, germinated seeds number, germination rate index, root and shoot length, shoot and root dry matter, and seedling vigor indices decreased, while mean germination time and root: shoot ratio increased in all four vegetable crops. Additionally, the carrot and watermelon are more susceptible than arugula and eggplant to drought stress, with germination response declining more rapidly with the rise of osmotic potential level. Arugula and eggplant crops tolerate water stress of up to 0.2 MPa, without reducing germination of the seeds; however, the growth of shoots and roots are inhibited. The germination process of eggplant and watermelon seeds are completely inhibited at 0.8 MPa osmotic potential, whereas germination of carrot seeds is completely inhibited at 0.4 MPa osmotic potential. Severe drought stress limits the process of seed germination and initial seedling growth of vegetable crops.

Sementes de rúcula (Eruca sativa Miller, cv. Cultivada), cenoura (Daucus carota L., cv. Nantes), berinjela (Solanum melongena L., cv. Embú) e melancia [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai cv.

ABSTRACT: The germination and growth of melon (Cucumis melo L.) plants can be severely affected by excess salts in the soil or irrigation water; however, negative effects of salt stress can be attenuated using appropriate methods of seed priming. Thus, effects of osmopriming as inducer of salt stress tolerance in melon seeds exposed to salinity levels were investigated in this study. Seeds were soaked for 22 h at 25 °C in the dark in distilled water (hydropriming) or 0.5% KNO3 solution (osmopriming), and after drying, were distributed in plastic boxes with blotter paper containing different NaCl solutions prepared with osmotic pressure of 0.0 MPa (control), -0.3 MPa (mild stress), and -0.6 MPa (severe stress). Unprimed dry seeds were taken as control. The plastic boxes were kept into a seed germinator, at 25 °C for 14 days. A completely randomized design in a 3 × 3 factorial schemes with four replicates of 25 seeds was used. Results showed that the seed priming with water and KNO3 may be successfully applied on melon seeds to alleviate the adverse effects of saline stress in initial stages of plant growth. However, under severe salt stress conditions, hydropriming should be used because it results in higher germination and initial growth rate of the seedlings when compared to the osmopriming. Use of unprimed seeds should not be adopted in cultivation areas affected by salinity because they result in low germination rate and reduced initial plant growth.

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of organic and mineral fertilization on collard green yield, and to assess the macro and micronutrient and heavy metal concentrations of its leaves to assess the potential hazards of manure use. Collard plants (Brassica oleracea var. acephala, cv. couve-manteiga) were grown in 4-L pots filled with a clay soil under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design used was completely randomized design and the treatments in a 3 × 4 factorial arrangement: three N sources (pig slurry, poultry manure, and urea) and four N rates (0, 100, 200 and 300 mg kg-1), with four replicates. Collard greens leaves were harvested 70 days after seedling plantings. The manure application (pig slurry or poultry manure) resulted in collard yield equivalent to the application of mineral fertilizer. However, the pig slurry application resulted in an increase of leaf Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, Cr, and Pb concentrations. Nitrogen application rates up to 300 mg N kg-1 result in the higher yield and nutritional quality of collard leaves. The application of high rates of manure, especially pig slurry, results in the increase of heavy metal (Cd, Cr, and Pb) concentrations. However, the maximum concentrations of 0.042 mg kg-1 Cd, 0.034 mg kg-1 Cr and 0.030 mg kg-1 Pb are well lower than maximum daily intake limit established by the Brazilian legislation, indicating that the consumption of collards from organic production systems with the manure application can be considered safe and without risk to human health.(AU)

Understanding the influence of row spacing and plant density on grain yield and yield components of crambe is critical in order to obtain higher grain yields. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of row spacing and plant density on grain yield and its components in crambe in two distinct regions of Brazil (Marechal Candido Rondon-PR, MCR-PR, and Botucatu-SP, BTU-SP). Narrow and wide row spacing (0.20 and 0.40 m) combined with four plant densities (15, 25, 35, and 45 plants m-1) were evaluated in a randomized block layout with four replications in a 2 × 4 factorial design. The experiment at BTU-SP was run under rainfed conditions with supplementary irrigation, whereas the experiment at MCR-PR was run under rainfed conditions without supplementary irrigation. Both experiments were run in soils classified as Oxisols. There was no interaction between row spacing and plant density. Highest grain yield with supplementary irrigation was observed at 0.20 m row spacing. Without irrigation, row spacing did not affect grain yield owing to the plasticity of crop. The highest grain yield was observed with approximately 30 plants m-1 at both experimental locations. A strong negative correlation was observed between final plant population and number of grains per plant. There was high plant mortality, particularly at high plant densities cultivated...(AU)
