RESUMEN

Chorioangioma is a benign placental neoplasm seen in about one percent of all pregnancies. The larger neoplasms generally cause severe foeto-maternal complications. We are reporting a case of a 33-year-old gravida three para two female who was incidentally diagnosed with chorioangioma at her routine 28-week antenatal follow-up. She delivered a preterm small-for-gestational-age female baby at 34 weeks with complications. Therefore, an early diagnosis warrants a close follow-up and timely intervention for a better outcome of the pregnancy.

In the present study, various statistical and machine learning (ML) techniques were used to understand how device fabrication parameters affect the performance of copper oxide-based resistive switching (RS) devices. In the present case, the data was collected from copper oxide RS devices-based research articles, published between 2008 to 2022. Initially, different patterns present in the data were analyzed by statistical techniques. Then, the classification and regression tree algorithm (CART) and decision tree (DT) ML algorithms were implemented to get the device fabrication guidelines for the continuous and categorical features of copper oxide-based RS devices, respectively. In the next step, the random forest algorithm was found to be suitable for the prediction of continuous-type features as compared to a linear model and artificial neural network (ANN). Moreover, the DT algorithm predicts the performance of categorical-type features very well. The feature importance score was calculated for each continuous and categorical feature by the gradient boosting (GB) algorithm. Finally, the suggested ML guidelines were employed to fabricate the copper oxide-based RS device and demonstrated its non-volatile memory properties. The results of ML algorithms and experimental devices are in good agreement with each other, suggesting the importance of ML techniques for understanding and optimizing memory devices.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are one of the most versatile and low-cost solar cells. However, DSSCs are prone to low power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to their counterparts, owing to their different synthesis parameters and process conditions. Therefore, designing efficient DSSCs and identifying the parameters that control the PCE of DSSCs are a critical tasks. We have collected data from hydrothermally synthesized DSSCs in the present work, published from 2005 to 2020. In line with publishing trends in the said period, we evaluate ZnO as a popular photoactive material for DSSC applications. We further analyzed the performance of hydrothermally synthesized ZnO DSSCs using different statistical techniques and provided some significant insights. We further applied the machine-learning technique with a decision tree algorithm to understand and discover the possible set of rules and heuristics that govern the morphology of the hydrothermally grown ZnO. In addition, we also employed supervised and unsupervised machine-learning models using conventional decision trees and classification and regression trees, respectively, to identify the dependence of the PCE of ZnO DSSCs on the different synthesis parameters. The reported work also evidences the PCE predictions of the ZnO DSSCs by using random forest and artificial neural network algorithms. The results substantiate that the random forest and artificial neural network algorithms successfully predict the PCE of the ZnO DSSCs with reasonable accuracy. Thus, we present a novel approach of applying statistical analysis and machine-learning algorithms to understand, discover, and predict the performance of DSSCs. We recommend extending the said know-how to other solar cells to identify rules and heuristics and experimentally realize highly efficient solar cells in shrinking manufacturing windows with a cost-effective approach.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts and tumors exhibit varying degrees of aggressiveness in their biological behavior. Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC), ameloblastoma are most common odontogenic cysts and tumors to occur in the oral cavity. Myofibroblasts (MFs) in the connective tissue stroma participate in the matrix degradation process by secreting matrix metalloproteinase 2, transforming growth factor beta1 and may contribute to variation in their biological behavior. Its activity is identified by alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) marker. With this background, the present study aims to evaluate the frequency of MFs using α-SMA to determine the biological behavior of OKC, DC, and different clinical variants of ameloblastoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out with total of 60 samples which include 10 cases each of OKC, DC, 30 cases of different clinical variants of ameloblastomas and 10 normal mucosa taken as controls. All are stained immunohistochemically using α-SMA and were analyzed for the same. Comparison between more than 2 groups done by one way analysis of variance test with the level of significance of P ≤ 0.0001, i.e., <0.05. RESULTS: Statistically significant difference in the mean number of MFs observed between certain groups, with higher mean number in solid ameloblastoma (SA) (32.45) followed by OKC (28.79), unicystic ameloblastoma (24.53), desmoplastic ameloblastoma (7.44), and DC (1.72). CONCLUSION: Higher frequency of MFs noticed in SA, OKC which are key cells for connective tissue remodeling by interacting with epithelial cells and other connective tissue cells to facilitate progression of cysts and tumors thereby contributing to their biological behavior.

Age estimation is an integral part of forensic medical and dental practice. In many countries, the age threshold of 14 years is set to determine the minimum age for criminal responsibility. In the present study, the authors studied the final maturation of the first (IPM1) and second mandibular premolars (IPM2) by Cameriere maturity index and determined cut-offs at the age threshold of 14 years, and validate on the test sample. INTRODUCTION: Whilst the corporate world seems to have embraced the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) as a predictor of worker success, its role in the dental profession needs to be explored; this study provides an Indian context. Hence, the EI of postgraduate (PG) students of Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry was assessed. AIMS: To measure EI amongst Paedodontics PG students in India, to assess any gender differences in EI and associated dimensions amongst them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 300 PG students from various dental institutions across India participating in their specialty national conference at I.T.S. Centre for Dental Studies and Research, Muradnagar, were included. EI was measured by the inventory developed by Singh (2004), based on Goleman's model (1998). RESULTS: Overall, 240 questionnaires (80% response rate) were completed by 142 male and 98 female PG students and analysed. Results showed that 19% and 58% of the respondents had very high and high EI scores, respectively. None of the students had poor or very poor scores. Results indicated that both males and females had high EI scores of 230.4 (± 10.38) and 222.6 (± 12.04), respectively. However, males had higher scores for dimensions of self-awareness (P<0.01), social awareness (P<0.01) and social skills (P<0.001) than their female counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: Both male and female paedodontic postgraduate students in India had high EI scores. This study provides valuable baseline information on EI in an Indian context.

DrrA and DrrB proteins confer resistance to the commonly used anticancer agents daunorubicin and doxorubicin in the producer organism Streptomyces peucetius. The drrAB locus has previously been cloned in Escherichia coli, and the proteins have been found to be functional in this host. DrrA, a soluble protein, belongs to the ABC family of proteins. It forms a complex with the integral membrane protein DrrB. Previous studies suggest that the function and stability of DrrA and DrrB are biochemically coupled. Thus, DrrA binds ATP only when it is in a complex with DrrB in the membrane. Further, DrrB is completely degraded if DrrA is absent. In the present study, we have characterized domains in DrrB that may be directly involved in interaction with DrrA. Several single-cysteine substitutions in DrrB were made. Interaction between DrrA and DrrB was studied by using a cysteine to amine chemical cross-linker that specifically cross-links a free sulfhydryl group in one protein (DrrB) to an amine in another (DrrA). We show here that DrrA cross-links with both the N- and the C-terminal ends of the DrrB protein, implying that they may be involved in interaction. Furthermore, this study identifies a motif within the N-terminal cytoplasmic tail of DrrB, which is similar to a motif recently shown by crystal structure analysis in BtuC and previously shown by sequence analysis to be also present in exporters, including MDR1. We propose that the motif present in DrrB and other exporters is actually a modified version of the EAA motif, which was originally believed to be present only in the importers of the ABC family. The present work is the first report where domains of interaction in the membrane component of an ABC drug exporter have been biochemically characterized.

Daunorubicin and doxorubicin, two commonly used anticancer agents, are produced by the soil bacterium Streptomyces peucetius. Self-resistance to these antibiotics in S. peucetius is conferred by the drrAB locus that codes for two proteins, DrrA and DrrB. DrrA is an ATP-binding protein. It belongs to the ABC family of transporters and shares sequence and functional similarities with P-glycoprotein of cancer cells. DrrB is an integral membrane protein that might function as a transporter for the efflux of daunorubicin and doxorubicin. Together, DrrA and DrrB are believed to form an ATP-driven pump for the efflux of these drugs. The drrAB locus has been cloned, and the two proteins have been expressed in a functional form in Escherichia coli. A topological analysis of the DrrB protein was performed using gene fusion methodology. Random and site-directed fusions of the drrB gene to lacZ, phoA, or gfp reporter genes were created. Based on the fusion data, a topological model of the DrrB protein is proposed in which the protein has eight membrane-spanning domains with both the N terminus and the C terminus in the cytoplasm.
