RESUMEN

Partly obstructing, proliferative mucosal masses in the small intestine of two dogs were shown histologically to be hamartomatous polyps. They were characterized by an extension of smooth muscle from the muscularis mucosae into the lamina propria of the lesion. This is the first report of such lesions in domestic animals. In one of the dogs the lesion had become malignant.

RESUMEN

A review of the literature reveals little evidence that controlling plaque reduces and controls nifedipine-induced gingival overgrowth. The case presented suggests that significant reduction and control of nifedipine-induced gingival overgrowth can be achieved by thorough scaling and root planing along with meticulous plaque control.

RESUMEN

Hemisection is a viable option to complete extraction in those situations where a portion of a tooth can still perform in health and function after the diseased portion has been removed. A case report is presented describing the hemisection of a mandibular first molar in a dog. Indications and contraindications for the procedure are outlined.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the comparative surface roughness produced by various oral hygiene instruments and materials on titanium implant abutments. Ten Brånemark titanium abutment cylinders were used, with one serving as an untreated control. One abutment was used to evaluate each of nine oral hygiene instrumentation methods used for specified lengths of time or instrument strokes. Each abutment was sonically cleaned, air dried, and viewed with a scanning electron microscope. Polaroid photomicrographs were made of abutment surfaces at predetermined magnifications. They were analyzed by three investigators, who compared individual test parameters in terms of time application or stroke number. The resulting abutment surface roughness was also evaluated. The rubber cup with flour of pumice created a smoother surface than the control; the interdental brush, soft nylon toothbrush, plastic scaler, Eva plastic tip, rubber cup, and Cavi-jet left a surface comparable to the control; the metal scalers and the Cavitron created a severely roughened surface.

RESUMEN

Correctly differentiating between periodontal abscess (localized, acute suppurative infection of the periodontium) and osteomyelitis (the extension of an infection into the bone medullary cavity) is crucial since the former may not require antibiotics for resolution, while the latter will. Initial assessment and treatment of osteomyelitis should be based on clinical examination, radiographic interpretation, and experience. Three case histories of osteomyelitis are presented, ranging from a periodontally well-localized case to one involving a hemimandible and crossing the midline. Successful early diagnosis and case management may benefit from scintigraphic interpretation and culture-and-sensitivity studies.

RESUMEN

The glycosylated hemoglobin assay is a relatively new test used in the diagnosis and monitoring of the diabetic patient. This assay should be of interest to the periodontist as it offers important advantages over traditional blood glucose testing methods. Most importantly, it gives an indication of the blood glucose level over an extended period of time (30 to 90 days), whereas traditional assays only indicate the glucose level at one point in time. Additionally, there is no requirement for fasting prior to testing. Two case reports are presented to illustrate how the glycosylated hemoglobin assay can be utilized by the periodontist.

RESUMEN

The giant cell fibroma should be of special interest to the periodontist as its primary site of occurrence is on the gingival tissue. A case report of a large giant cell fibroma is followed by a review of this interesting oral tumor, including the controversy surrounding its classification as a separate entity.

RESUMEN

Odontogenic tumors normally occur within the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. When they involve the dentogingival complex of adjacent teeth, their removal may become the responsibility of the periodontist. The odontomas are the most common of the odontogenic solid tumors and will be encountered most often by the periodontist. A review of the odontomas is presented followed by a case report and a discussion of the periodontal considerations in their removal. Emphasis is placed on following standard hygiene procedures before and after any periodontal surgery along with conservative removal of the lesion to preserve the periodontal attachment around the adjacent teeth.

RESUMEN

A case is presented documenting an apparent nonreactive squamous odontogenic proliferation of the rests of Malassez. The nonreactive nature of the tumor is discussed along with the possible association between this lesion and the recently reported squamous odontogenic tumor.

RESUMEN

A review of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (Osler-Weber-Rendu Disease) is presented. Special emphasis is placed on the oral manifestations which include hemorrhagic vesicles, nodules, papules and ulcers that involve the gingiva and other areas of the mucosa. Two cases are included which were seen in a periodontic clinic prior to the medical diagnosis. The nature of the practice of periodontics necessitates a broad understanding of the systemic diseases reflected in the oral cavity. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia is one such disease.

RESUMEN

Two thousand molars in 200 East Indian skulls were examined for the occurrence, location, and grade of cervical enamel projections. The relationship between the enamel projections and furcation involvements was studied. Several findings resulted. The incidence of cervical enamel projections in molars was 32.6%. The incidence of cervical enamel projections varied between molars. The mandibular second molars showed the highest incidence of enamel projections (51.0%), followed by the maxillary second molars (45.6%). The lowest incidence was seen in the maxillary first molars (13.6%). Grade 1 enamel projections were the most frequently encountered. Cervical enamel projections occurred most frequently on the buccal surfaces of teeth. There was a positive, statistically significant relationship between tooth surfaces with grade 2 and 3 enamel projections and periodontally involved furcations. However, no etiologic relationship was found between grade 1 projections and furcation involvements. There seems to be a physiologic relationship between bone and enamel projections. The alveolar crest has a tendency to follow the outline of the enamel projection, and a channel much wider than a normal periodontal membrane space accommodates the enamel projection as it extends toward the furcation. The results indicate that when cervical enamel projections are severe enough to approach or enter the furcation area (grades 2 and 3), they may be an etiologic factor in the breakdown of these furcations.
