RESUMEN

Family GH1 glycosyl hydrolases are ubiquitous in prokaryotes and eukaryotes and are utilised in numerous industrial applications, including bioconversion of lignocelluloses. In this study, hyperacidophilic archaeon Cuniculiplasma divulgatum (S5T=JCM 30642T) was explored as a source of novel carbohydrate-active enzymes. The genome of C. divulgatum encodes three GH1 enzyme candidates, from which CIB12 and CIB13 were heterologously expressed and characterised. Phylogenetic analysis of CIB12 and CIB13 clustered them with ß-glucosidases from genuinely thermophilic archaea including Thermoplasma acidophilum, Picrophilus torridus, Sulfolobus solfataricus, Pyrococcus furiosus and Thermococcus kodakarensis. Purified enzymes showed maximal activities at pH 4.5-6.0 (CIB12) and 4.5-5.5 (CIB13) with optimal temperatures at 50 °C, suggesting a high-temperature origin of Cuniculiplasma spp. ancestors. Crystal structures of both enzymes revealed a classical (α/ß)8 TIM barrel fold with the active site located inside the barrel close to the C-termini of ß-strands including the catalytic residues Glu204 and Glu388 (CIB12), and Glu204 and Glu385 (CIB13). Both enzymes preferred cellobiose over lactose as substrates and were classified as cellobiohydrolases. Cellobiose addition increased the biomass yield of Cuniculiplasma cultures growing on peptides by 50%, suggesting that the cellobiohydrolases expand the carbon substrate range and hence environmental fitness of Cuniculiplasma.

We explain here that the authors of the article cited in the title have misrepresented the species of As(III) and As(V) in solutions and, in particular, have neglected their speciation as a function of pH. Their discussion of (ad)sorption mechanisms is therefore unsatisfactory, especially since organic matter (flower waste) and the presence of iron oxyhydroxides should be taken into account. Furthermore, the modeling of (ad)sorption kinetics and isotherms was based on linearized equations, whereas the corresponding nonlinear equations should have been used. Therefore, we believe that the authors of the original article should make corrections and additions to it. This Letter to the Editor is motivated by a concern to avoid the dissemination of approximate or even incorrect concepts in the scientific literature, which could mislead novice researchers.

Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) are promising therapeutics for treating various neurological disorders. However, ASOs are unable to readily cross the mammalian blood-brain barrier (BBB) and therefore need to be delivered intrathecally to the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we engineered a human transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) binding molecule, the oligonucleotide transport vehicle (OTV), to transport a tool ASO across the BBB in human TfR knockin (TfRmu/hu KI) mice and nonhuman primates. Intravenous injection and systemic delivery of OTV to TfRmu/hu KI mice resulted in sustained knockdown of the ASO target RNA, Malat1, across multiple mouse CNS regions and cell types, including endothelial cells, neurons, astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes. In addition, systemic delivery of OTV enabled Malat1 RNA knockdown in mouse quadriceps and cardiac muscles, which are difficult to target with oligonucleotides alone. Systemically delivered OTV enabled a more uniform ASO biodistribution profile in the CNS of TfRmu/hu KI mice and greater knockdown of Malat1 RNA compared with a bivalent, high-affinity TfR antibody. In cynomolgus macaques, an OTV directed against MALAT1 displayed robust ASO delivery to the primate CNS and enabled more uniform biodistribution and RNA target knockdown compared with intrathecal dosing of the same unconjugated ASO. Our data support systemically delivered OTV as a potential platform for delivering therapeutic ASOs across the BBB.

Drought stress, which is becoming more prevalent due to climate change, is a significant abiotic factor that adversely impacts crop production and yield stability. Cultivated soybean (Glycine max), a versatile crop for humans and animals, exhibits sensitivity to drought, resulting in reduced growth and development under drought conditions. However, few genetic studies have assessed wild soybean's (Glycine soja) response to drought stress. In this work, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and analysis of wild soybean accessions to identify loci responsible for drought tolerance at the vegetative (n = 187) and the germination stages (n = 135) using the available resequencing data. The GWAS analysis of the leaf wilting score (LWS) identified eight single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on chromosomes 10, 11, and 19. Of these, wild soybeans with both SNPs on chromosomes 10 (adenine) and 11 (thymine) produced lower LWS, indicating that these SNPs have an important role in the genetic effect on LWS for drought tolerance at the vegetative stage. At the germination stage, nine SNPs associated with five phenotypic measurements were identified on chromosomes 6, 9, 10, 13, 16, and 17, and the genomic regions identified at the germination stage were different from those identified for the LWS, supporting our previous finding that there may not be a robust correlation between the genes influencing phenotypes at the germination and vegetative stages. This research will benefit marker-assisted breeding programs aimed at enhancing drought tolerance in soybeans.

Biopolymer-clay composite films were synthesized and characterized for food packaging material. The synthesis was conducted in two stages. Cetrimonium bromide-modified bentonite (CTAB-bentonite) was first exchanged with Ag ions to obtain Ag-CTAB-bentonite. Biopolymer-clay composite films were then performed by a solution-casting method between chitosan (biopolymer) and Ag-CTAB-bentonite or between chitosan and CTAB-bentonite. Different weights of CTAB-bentonite (3% and 5% wt.) and Ag-CTAB-bentonite (3% and 5% wt.) were used during the second stage. The resultant films were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopes, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, optical measurement, and others (moisture content, swelling behavior, water solubility, antibacterial, shredded carrot preservation, and biodegradability). Results indicated that the properties (thermal stability, thermomechanical ability, UV-visible light barrier, shredded carrot preservation) of the chitosan-based film incorporated with the synthesized composites were enhanced compared to those of the CS film. The CS/(CTAB-bentonite)-3% and CS/(Ag-CTAB-bentonite)-3% films exhibited antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica subp. enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes. The chitosan-based film reinforced with the two prepared composites can be potential for food preservation and packaging.

Introduction: Effects of dioxin exposure on gray matter volume have been reported in previous studies, but a few studies reported effects of dioxin exposure on white matter structure. Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate the impact of dioxin exposure on white matter microstructure in men living in the most severely dioxin-contaminated areas in Vietnam. Methods: In 2019 brain MRI scans from 28 men living near Bien Hoa airbase were obtained at Dong Nai General Hospital, Vietnam, on a 3 T scanner using a conventional diffusion tensor imaging sequence. Two exposure markers were indicated by perinatal exposure estimated by assessment of maternal residency in a dioxin-contaminated area during pregnancy and by measurement of blood dioxin levels. A general linear model was used to compare fractional anisotropy (FA) values in 11 white matter tracts in both hemispheres between groups with and without perinatal dioxin exposure and groups with high and low blood dioxin levels after adjusting for covariates. Results: The adjusted mean FA value in the left cingulum hippocampal part (CGH) was significantly lower in the perinatal dioxin exposure group compared with the group without perinatal dioxin exposure. The high blood TCDD group showed significantly reduced FA values in the left and right CGH and right uncinate fasciculus (UNC). Moreover, the high blood TEQ-PCDDs group showed significantly lower FA values in the left and right CGH and the left UNC. There were no significant differences in FA values between the groups with high and low TEQ-PCDFs levels or between the groups with high and low TEQ-PCDD/Fs levels. Discussion: It was concluded that dioxin exposure during the perinatal period and adulthood may alter the microstructure of white matter tracts in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders.

The presence of arsenic in groundwater, and through this in drinking water, has been shown to present a serious risk to public health in many regions of the world. In this study, two iron-rich carbonous adsorbents were compared for the removal of arsenate (As(V)) from groundwater. Biochars (FeO-biochar and FeO-pyrochar) derived from biomass waste were functionalised in two different ways with iron chloride for comparation. Batch and dynamic parameters were optimised to achieve >99% As(V) removal efficiency. Experimental data were best described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model, while multi-stage diffusion appeared to limit mass transfer of As(V). Among the isotherm models evaluated, the Freundlich model best described the experimental results with high correlation coefficients (R2 ≥ 0.94) for both adsorbents. Monolayer adsorption capacities were found to be 4.34 mg/g and 8.66 mg/g for FeO-biochar and FeO-pyrochar, respectively. Batch studies followed by instrumental characterisation of the materials indicated the removal mechanisms involved to be electrostatic interactions (outer-sphere), OH- ligand exchange (inner-sphere complexation) and hydrogen bonding with functional groups. Higher pHpzc (9.1), SBET (167.2 m2/g), and iron/elemental content for the FeO-pyrochar (compared with the FeO-biochar) suggested that both surface chemistry and porosity/surface area were important in adsorption. Dynamic studies showed FeO-pyrochar can be used to remove As(V) from groundwater even at low 'environmental' concentrations relevant to legislative limits (<10 µg/L), whereby 7 g of FeO-pyrochar was able to treat 5.4 L groundwater.

OBJECTIVES: α-thalassemia is an autosomal recessive monogenic blood disorder, affecting up to 5% of the world's population. The occurrence rate of the disease in Vietnam varies up to up to 51.5%, with high rate of mutation carriers, of couples consisting of two carriers at risk of bearing a child with fetal Hb Bart, which can develop into hydrops fetalis syndrome, threatening the well-being of the mother and the child. Our study aims to facilitate birth of healthy/asymptomatic children of α-thalassemia carrier couples who received reproductive service at our centre during the period of 2019-2022. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 89 couples at risks of having α-thalassemia offsprings requested IVF procedures and PGD at Post Hospital during 2019-2022 were recruited for investigation. Couple and additional family members' peripheral blood samples of couples and additional family members were subjected to haemoglobin electrophoresis, DNA extraction for α-thalassemia gene mutation detection and STRs linkage analysis. Data were observed and analysed on GeneMarker software. RESULTS: 91 cycles of PGD for α-thalassemia were carried out for 89 couples. α-thalassemia large deletion (--SEA/αα) was the most common mutation identified in 88 couples, in which 4 cases also carried ß-thalassemia point mutations. Combining results of PGS and PGD, 278/424 amplified embryos were transferable (HBA-mutation free or carriers of single heterozygous HBA mutation, without chromosomal abnormality). 64/89 couples have been transferred with the embryos (prioritizing mutation free ones over carriers), resulting in the birth of 36 α-thalassemia disease-free children, 17 ongoing pregnancies, and 11 with miscarriages. CONCLUSION: Successful application of microsatellite-based method in PGD facilitated the birth of 36 healthy children and 17 ongoing pregnancies for 53/64 couples with embryo-transferred. All resulted clinical births displayed confirmation results in line with the PGD results, thus demonstrating the feasibility and credibility of the use of STR markers in PGD.

BACKGROUND: The 10-item Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) is a quick and easy survey instrument recommended by the International Consortium for Health Outcome Measures as the tool of choice for measuring women's birth satisfaction. AIM: To translate and validate a Vietnamese-language version of the BSS-R. METHOD: A quantitative cross-sectional method was used to gather data post translation and back-translation of a Vietnamese version of the BSS-R (VN-BSS-R). Data collected were psychometrically evaluated using key indices of validity and reliability. PARTICIPANTS: Vietnamese women who were within one month postpartum of birth (N = 383) took part in the study. RESULTS: Findings illustrate that a two-factor model offered excellent psychometric properties. With the two-factor VN-BSS-R, five items loaded onto a subscale 'Positive birth experiences' and the other five onto a second subscale 'Negative birth experiences'. This two-factor model offered a fit to data (root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.07, 90% confidence interval [CI] [0.05, 0.09], root square mean residual [RMSE] = 0.04 and comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.97). Mean scores for the exploratory factor analysis [EFA]-derived 'positive' and 'negative' sub-scales were 17.12 (SD 2.34) and 8.40 (SD 4.18) respectively. CONCLUSION: The translated and validated VN-BSS-R is a psychometrically robust tool for measuring birth satisfaction in Vietnamese postpartum women.The VN-BSS-R is available for use to measure experiences and perceptions of intrapartum care received by Vietnamese women.

While we recognize the prognostic importance of clinicopathological measures and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), the independent contribution of quantitative image markers to prognosis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains underexplored. In our multi-institutional study of 394 NSCLC patients, we utilize pre-treatment computed tomography (CT) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) to establish a habitat imaging framework for assessing regional heterogeneity within individual tumors. This framework identifies three PET/CT subtypes, which maintain prognostic value after adjusting for clinicopathologic risk factors including tumor volume. Additionally, these subtypes complement ctDNA in predicting disease recurrence. Radiogenomics analysis unveil the molecular underpinnings of these imaging subtypes, highlighting downregulation in interferon alpha and gamma pathways in the high-risk subtype. In summary, our study demonstrates that these habitat imaging subtypes effectively stratify NSCLC patients based on their risk levels for disease recurrence after initial curative surgery or radiotherapy, providing valuable insights for personalized treatment approaches.

Background: The persistent challenge of high mortality rates in acute myocardial infarction-induced cardiogenic shock endures notwithstanding advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease over the past two decades. While recent studies present conflicting evidence on the efficacy of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO), observational research supports the benefits of early VA ECMO initiation. However, the current lack of robust support from randomized clinical trials for VA ECMO use in this context highlights the ongoing uncertainty surrounding its effectiveness. Case summary: A 52-year-old male with sudden, intense chest pain was diagnosed with cardiogenic shock due to non-ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction at a local hospital. Initial treatment included aspirin, clopidogrel, and noradrenaline. Upon transfer to our hospital, the patient's condition deteriorated, leading to acute respiratory distress and severe hypotension. Prior to emergent percutaneous coronary intervention, peripheral VA ECMO was initiated. Coronary angiography revealed left main coronary artery occlusion, and a successful intervention was performed. Post-intervention, the patient's haemodynamic parameters significantly improved, and after 7 days, ECMO was successfully discontinued. The patient was discharged in stable condition after 25 days, with favourable outcomes persisting at the 30-day mark. Continuous monitoring is planned during outpatient follow-up. Discussion: The clinical case illustrates a successful treatment outcome achieved through teamwork by the heart team, supporting the efficacy of the VA ECMO pre-percutaneous coronary intervention approach. The careful selection of appropriate candidates and strategic initiation of VA ECMO may play a role in enhancing outcomes for individuals experiencing acute myocardial infarction complicated by challenging cardiogenic shock.

Two planthopper species of the family Nogodinidae are added to the fauna of Vietnam, both from two localities in Thua Thien-Hue Province: Bach Ma National Park and Phong Dien District. The first species belongs to Goniopsarites Meng, Wang & Wang, 2014, G.mientrunganus Constant & Pham, sp. nov., and the second belongs to Pisacha Distant, 1906, P.yinggensis Meng, Wang & Wang, 2014. Pisachayinggensis was previously recorded from Hainan Island, China. These new records greatly extend the distribution of both genera, which were known from southern China, Hainan and North Vietnam, to the south, reaching the mid area of Central Vietnam. Sexual dimorphism is reported in P.yinggensis for the first time. Illustrations of habitus and male terminalia of the new species are given as well as distribution maps and photographs of live specimens and their habitat. The family Nogodinidae now comprises nine species in Vietnam, with three of them present in Bach Ma National Park.

The paper optimizes the placement of soft open points (SOPs) devices, shunt capacitor banks (SCBs), and distributed generators (DGs) in the IEEE 69-node distribution power grid for reducing the power loss of a single hour and total energy losses of one year. EO is proven to be more effective than previous methods and three other applied algorithms, including the Coot optimization algorithm (COOT), Modified weight inertia factor and modified acceleration coefficients-based particle swarm optimization (CFPSO), and Tunicate swarm algorithm (TSA). So, EO is applied for the last case considering one SOPs, one wind turbine (WT), two solar photovoltaic systems (PVs), and two SCBs over one year with twelve months and 24 h each month. The study reaches the smallest power loss compared to previous studies in the first case with one SOPs device. The results from the second to the fourth cases indicate that the power grid needs the placement of SCBs and DGs first and SOPs devices to reach the lowest power loss. Case 5 indicates that the hybrid system with one WT and two PVs suffers higher power losses than the base system at hours with high generation from renewable sources; however, integrating the SOPs and SCBs into the hybrid system can reach smaller losses than the base system at these hours. Thus, using SOPs and SCBs in integrated distribution power grids with renewable energies can greatly benefit energy loss reduction.

C-N bonds play a critical role in pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and materials sciences, necessitating ever-better methods to forge this linkage. Here we report a simple procedure for direct C(sp3)-H azidation using iron or manganese catalysis and a nucleophilic azide source. All reagents are commercially available, the experimental procedure is simple, and we can use the C-H donor substrate as the limiting reagent, a challenge for many C-H azidation methods. Preliminary experiments are consistent with a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT)/radical ligand transfer (RLT) radical cascade mechanism and a wide variety of substrates can be azidated in moderate to high yields.

Parabens (p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters) commonly used preservatives (in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and foods) can pose potential effects on environmental health. In this study, seven parabens were quantified in marine fish samples using an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (UHPLC-MS/MS) system. Parabens in the fish samples were extracted and purified by a rapid, simple, and effective procedure comprising sample homogenization with solvent, solid-phase extraction clean-up, and solvent evaporation. Results demonstrated that the recoveries of seven compounds (with relative standard deviation < 15%) were 88-103% in matrix-spike samples and 86-105% in surrogate standards. The method detection limits and method quantification limits of seven parabens were 0.015-0.030 and 0.045-0.090 ng/g-ww (wet weight), respectively. The optimized method was applied to measure the concentration of parabens in the 37 marine fish samples collected from Vietnam coastal waters. The concentration ranges of seven parabens found in round scad and greater lizardfish samples were 6.82-25.3 ng/g ww and 6.21-17.2 ng/g-ww, respectively. Among parabens, methylparaben accounted for the highest contribution in both fish species (43.2 and 44.9%, respectively). Based on the measured concentrations of parabens in marine fish samples, the estimated daily intake was calculated for children and adults with the corresponding values of 0.0477 µg/kg/day and 0.0119 µg/kg/day, respectively. However, the presence of parabens in Vietnamese marine fish may not pose a significant risk to human health.

Background: Pathogenic variants in the IGHMBP2 gene are associated with two distinct autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorders: spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress type 1 (SMARD1; OMIM #604320) and Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2S (CMT2S; OMIM #616155). SMARD1 is a severe and fatal condition characterized by infantile-onset respiratory distress, diaphragmatic palsy, and distal muscular weakness, while CMT2S follows a milder clinical course, with slowly progressive distal muscle weakness and sensory loss, without manifestations of respiratory disorder. Methods: Whole-exome sequencing of the IGHMBP2 gene was performed for eight Vietnamese patients with IGHMBP2-related neuromuscular disorders including five patients with SMARD1 and the others with CMT2S. Results: We identified one novel IGHMBP2 variant c.1574T > C (p.Leu525Pro) in a SMARD1 patient. Besides that, two patients shared the same pathogenic variants (c.1235 + 3A > G/c.1334A > C) but presented completely different clinical courses: one with SMARD1 who deceased at 8 months of age, the other with CMT2S was alive at 3 years old without any respiratory distress. Conclusion: This study is the first to report IGHMBP-2-related neuromuscular disorders in Vietnam. A novel IGHMBP2 variant c.1574T > C (p.Leu525Pro) expressing SMARD1 phenotype was detected. The presence of three patients with the same genotype but distinct clinical outcomes suggested the interaction of variants and other factors including relating modified genes in the mechanism of various phenotypes.

Introduction: NSCLC transformation to SCLC has been best characterized with EGFR-mutant NSCLC, with emerging case reports seen in ALK, RET, and KRAS-altered NSCLC. Previous reports revealed transformed SCLC from EGFR-mutant NSCLC portends very poor prognosis and lack effective treatment. Genomic analyses revealed TP53 and RB1 loss of function increase the risk of SCLC transformation. Little has been reported on the detailed clinicogenomic characteristics and potential therapeutic targets for this patient population. Methods: In this study, we conducted a single-center retrospective analysis of clinical and genomic characteristics of patients with EGFR-mutant NSCLC transformed to SCLC. Demographic data, treatment course, and clinical molecular testing reports were extracted from electronic medical records. Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to estimate survival outcomes. Next generation sequencing-based assays was used to identify EGFR and co-occurring genetic alterations in tissue or plasma before and after SCLC transformation. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was performed on a patient-derived-xenograft model generated from a patient with EGFR-NSCLC transformed SCLC tumor. Results: A total of 34 patients were identified in our study. Median age at initial diagnosis was 58, and median time to SCLC transformation was 24.2 months. 68% were female and 82% were never smokers. 79% of patients were diagnosed as stage IV disease, and over half had brain metastases at baseline. Median overall survival of the entire cohort was 38.3 months from initial diagnoses and 12.4 months from time of SCLC transformation. Most patients harbored EGFR exon19 deletions as opposed to exon21 L858R alteration. Continuing EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor post-transformation did not improve overall survival compared with those patients where tyrosine kinase inhibitor was stopped in our cohort. In the 20 paired pretransformed and post-transformed patient samples, statistically significant enrichment was seen with PIK3CA alterations (p = 0.04) post-transformation. Profiling of longitudinal liquid biopsy samples suggest emergence of SCLC genetic alterations before biopsy-proven SCLC, as shown by increasing variant allele frequency of TP53, RB1, PIK3CA alterations. ScRNA-seq revealed potential therapeutic targets including DLL3, CD276 (B7-H3) and PTK7 were widely expressed in transformed SCLC. Conclusions: SCLC transformation is a potential treatment resistance mechanism in driver-mutant NSCLC. In our cohort of 34 EGFR-mutant NSCLC, poor prognosis was observed after SCLC transformation. Clinicogenomic analyses of paired and longitudinal samples identified genomic alterations emerging post-transformation and scRNA-seq reveal potential therapeutic targets in this population. Further studies are needed to rigorously validate biomarkers and therapeutic targets for this patient population.

Surveillance for emerging pathogens is critical for developing early warning systems to guide preparedness efforts for future outbreaks of associated disease. To better define the epidemiology and burden of associated respiratory disease and acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), as well as to provide actionable data for public health interventions, we developed a multimodal surveillance program in Colorado, USA, for enterovirus D68 (EV-D68). Timely local, state, and national public health outreach was possible because prospective syndromic surveillance for AFM and asthma-like respiratory illness, prospective clinical laboratory surveillance for EV-D68 among children hospitalized with respiratory illness, and retrospective wastewater surveillance led to early detection of the 2022 outbreak of EV-D68 among Colorado children. The lessons learned from developing the individual layers of this multimodal surveillance program and how they complemented and informed the other layers of surveillance for EV-D68 and AFM could be applied to other emerging pathogens and their associated diseases.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive malignancy composed of distinct transcriptional subtypes, but implementing subtyping in the clinic has remained challenging, particularly due to limited tissue availability. Given the known epigenetic regulation of critical SCLC transcriptional programs, we hypothesized that subtype-specific patterns of DNA methylation could be detected in tumor or blood from SCLC patients. Using genomic-wide reduced-representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) in two cohorts totaling 179 SCLC patients and using machine learning approaches, we report a highly accurate DNA methylation-based classifier (SCLC-DMC) that can distinguish SCLC subtypes. We further adjust the classifier for circulating-free DNA (cfDNA) to subtype SCLC from plasma. Using the cfDNA classifier (cfDMC), we demonstrate that SCLC phenotypes can evolve during disease progression, highlighting the need for longitudinal tracking of SCLC during clinical treatment. These data establish that tumor and cfDNA methylation can be used to identify SCLC subtypes and might guide precision SCLC therapy.

Commercial micro-mesoporous carbonaceous material (MCM; 56.8% mesopores) was applied for investigating the removal phenomenon of naproxen drug in aqueous solutions through batch adsorption experiments. Results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of MCM to naproxen was slightly affected by different pHeq (2.0-11) and ionic strength (0-1 M NaCl). Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and mechanisms were evaluated at pH 7.0. Adsorption kinetics indicated the rate constants for adsorption (0.2 × 10-3  L/(mg × min) and desorption (0.076/min) and the adsorption equilibrium constant (2.6 × 10-3  L/mg). Adsorption isotherm showed that MCM exhibited a high-affinity adsorption capacity to naproxen (even at low concentrations) and its Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax ) was 252.7 mg/g at 25°C. Adsorption thermodynamics proved that the adsorption process was endothermic and physisorption (ΔH° = 9.66 kJ/mol). The analysis result of pore size distribution demonstrated that the internal pore structure of MCM was appropriate for adsorbing naproxen molecules. Pore-filing mechanism (pore diffusion phenomenon) was confirmed by a considerable decrease in BET-surface area (585 m2 /g) and total pore volume (0.417 cm3 /g) of MCM after adsorbing naproxen (~1000 mg/L and pH 7.0) at 5 min (341 and 0.256), 60 min (191 and 0.205), 120 min (183 and 0.193), 360 min (144 and 0.175), and 24 h (71.6 m2 /g and 0.123 cm3 /g, respectively). The pore diffusion occurred rapidly (even at the initial adsorption period of 5 min). The FTIR technique was applied to identify the existence of C-H···π and n-π interaction. π-π interaction (evaluated through ID /IG ratio and C=C band) played a minor contribution in adsorption mechanisms. The ID /IG ratio (determined by the Raman technique) of MCM before adsorption (1.195) was similar to that after adsorption (1.190), and the wavenumber (C=C band; its FTIR spectrum) slightly shifted from 1638 to 1634 cm-1 after adsorption. A decrease in the Qmax value of MCM from 249 to 217 (H2 O2 -oxidized MCM) or to 224 mg/g (HNO3 -oxidized MCM) confirmed the presence of π-π interaction. Electrostatic attraction was a minor contribution. MCM can serve as a promising material for removing naproxen from water environment through a pore-filling mechanism. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Pore-filling mechanism was proposed by comparing textural properties of MCM before and after adsorbing naproxen. C-H···π and n-π interactions were identified via FTIR technique. π-π interaction was observed by FTIR and Raman techniques. Oxidation of MCM with HNO3 or H2 O2 was a helpful method to explore π-π interaction. Electrostatic attraction was explained through studies: effects of pH and NaCl along with desorption.
