RESUMEN

Fifty percents absorption by thin film, with thickness is much smaller than the skin depth and optical thickness much smaller than the wavelength, is a well-known concept of classical electrodynamics. This is a valuable feature that has been numerously widely explored for metal films, while chemically inert nanomembranes are a real fabrication challenge. Here we report the 20 nm thin pyrolyzed carbon film (PyC) placed on 300 nm thick silicon nitride (Si3N4) membrane demonstrating an efficient broadband absorption in the terahertz and near infrared ranges. While the bare Si3N4membrane is completely transparent in the THz range, the 20 nm thick PyC layer increases the absorption of the PyC coated Si3N4membrane to 40%. The reflection and transmission spectra in the near infrared region reveal that the PyC film absorption persists to a level of at least 10% of the incident power. Such a broadband absorption of the PyC film opens new pathways toward broadband bolometric radiation detectors.

RESUMEN

In sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (sALS), IL-17A- and granzyme-positive cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL), IL-17A-positive mast cells, and inflammatory macrophages invade the brain and spinal cord. In some patients, the disease starts following a trauma or a severe infection. We examined cytokines and cytokine regulators over the disease course and found that, since the early stages, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) exhibit increased expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-12A, IFN-γ, and TNF-α, as well as granzymes and the transcription factors STAT3 and STAT4. In later stages, PBMCs upregulated the autoimmunity-associated cytokines IL-23A and IL-17B, and the chemokines CXCL9 and CXCL10, which attract CTL and monocytes into the central nervous system. The inflammation is fueled by the downregulation of IL-10, TGFß, and the inhibitory T-cell co-receptors CTLA4, LAG3, and PD-1, and, in vitro, by stimulation with the ligand PD-L1. We investigated in two sALS patients the regulation of the macrophage transcriptome by dimethyl fumarate (DMF), a drug approved against multiple sclerosis and psoriasis, and the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase/stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS/STING) pathway inhibitor H-151. Both DMF and H-151 downregulated the expression of granzymes and the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-15, IL-23A, and IFN-γ, and induced a pro-resolution macrophage phenotype. The eicosanoid epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EET) from arachidonic acid was anti-inflammatory in synergy with DMF. H-151 and DMF are thus candidate drugs targeting the inflammation and autoimmunity in sALS via modulation of the NFκB and cGAS/STING pathways.

RESUMEN

We report on the experimental evidence of thermal terahertz (THz) emission tailored by magnetic polariton (MP) excitations in entirely GaAs-based structures equipped with metasurfaces. The n-GaAs/GaAs/TiAu structure was optimized using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations for the resonant MP excitations in the frequency range below 2 THz. Molecular beam epitaxy was used to grow the GaAs layer on the n-GaAs substrate, and a metasurface, comprising periodic TiAu squares, was formed on the top surface using UV laser lithography. The structures exhibited resonant reflectivity dips at room temperature and emissivity peaks at T=390 °C in the range from 0.7 THz to 1.3 THz, depending on the size of the square metacells. In addition, the excitations of the third harmonic were observed. The bandwidth was measured as narrow as 0.19 THz of the resonant emission line at 0.71 THz for a 42 µm metacell side length. An equivalent LC circuit model was used to describe the spectral positions of MP resonances analytically. Good agreement was achieved among the results of simulations, room temperature reflection measurements, thermal emission experiments, and equivalent LC circuit model calculations. Thermal emitters are mostly produced using a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) stack, whereas our proposed employment of n-GaAs substrate instead of metal film allows us to integrate the emitter with other GaAs optoelectronic devices. The MP resonance quality factors obtained at elevated temperatures (Q≈3.3to5.2) are very similar to those of MIM structures as well as to 2D plasmon resonance quality at cryogenic temperatures.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Macrophages of healthy subjects have a pro-resolution phenotype, upload amyloid-ß (Aß) into endosomes, and degrade Aß, whereas macrophages of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) generally have a pro-inflammatory phenotype and lack energy for brain clearance of Aß. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the pathogenesis of sporadic AD and therapeutic effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) with vitamins B and D and antioxidants on monocyte/macrophage (MM) migration in the AD brain, MM transcripts in energy and Aß degradation, MM glycome, and macrophage clearance of Aß. METHODS: We followed for 31.3 months (mean) ten PUFA-supplemented neurodegenerative patients: 3 with subjective cognitive impairment (SCI), 2 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 3 MCI/vascular cognitive impairment, 2 with dementia with Lewy bodies, and 7 non-supplemented caregivers. We examined: monocyte migration in the brain and a blood-brain barrier model by immunochemistry and electron microscopy; macrophage transcriptome by RNAseq; macrophage glycome by N-glycan profiling and LTQ-Orbitrap mass spectrometry; and macrophage phenotype and phagocytosis by immunofluorescence. RESULTS: MM invade Aß plaques, upload but do not degrade Aß, and release Aß into vessels, which develop cerebrovascular amyloid angiopathy (CAA); PUFA upregulate energy and Aß degradation enzyme transcripts in macrophages; PUFA enhance sialylated N-glycans in macrophages; PUFA reduce oxidative stress and increase pro-resolution MM phenotype, mitochondrial membrane potential, and Aß phagocytosis (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Macrophages of SCI, MCI, and AD patients have interrelated defects in the transcriptome, glycome, Aß phagocytosis, and Aß degradation. PUFA mend macrophage transcriptome, enrich glycome, enhance Aß clearance, and benefit the cognition of early-stage AD patients.

RESUMEN

We report the performance of a graphene-enhanced THz grating fabricated by depositing a gold layer on the femtosecond micromachined SiO2 substrate. The morphology of the gold plated patterned substrate was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), while the quality of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy. The electromagnetic (EM) response of the metasurface comprising the graphene sheet and the gold plated substrate was studied by THz time domain spectroscopy in the 100 GHz-1 THz frequency range. We employed the finite elements method (FEM) to model the metasurface EM response by adjusting the ac conductivity of the gold layer covering the patterned SiO2 substrate to reproduce the measured transmission/reflection spectra. The results of the numerical simulation reveal the impact of the imperfectness of the gold layer on the performance of the THz metasurface. The experimental results are well described in terms of the Drude-Smith model of metal conductivity that takes into account the anisotropic scattering of the carriers in thin metal films.

RESUMEN

An ability of lensless titanium-based antenna coupled microbolometers (Ti-µbolometers) operating at room temperature to monitor precisely radiation patterns in terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) systems are demonstrated. To provide comprehensive picture, two different THz-TDS systems and Ti-µbolometers coupled with three different antennas-narrowband dipole antennas for 0.3 THz, 0.7 THz and a log-periodic antenna for wideband detection-were selected for experiments. Radiation patterns, spatial beam profiles and explicit beam evolution along the propagation axis are investigated; polarization-sensitive properties under various THz emitter power ranges are revealed. It was found that the studied Ti-µbolometers are convenient lensless sensors suitable to discriminate and control THz radiation pattern features in various wideband THz-TDS systems.

RESUMEN

Quality control and non-destructive monitoring are of notable interest of food and pharmaceutical industries. It relies on the ability of non-invasive inspection which can be employed for manufacturing process control. We hereby apply terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy as non-destructive technique to monitor pure and degraded oils as well as hydrocarbon chemicals. Significant differences in the spectra of refractive index (RI) and absorption coefficient arising from the presence of ester linkages in the edible and technical oils were obtained. Explicit increase from 1.38 to 1.5 of the RI in all THz spectrum range was observed in hydrocarbons and mono-functional esters with the increase of molar mass. This fact is in contrast of RI dependence on molar mass in multi-functional esters, such as Adipate or vegetable oils, where it is around 1.54. Degradation products, Oleic Acid (OA) and water in particular, lead only to some changes in absorption coefficient and RI spectra of vegetable oils. We demonstrate that complex colloidal and supramolecular processes, such as dynamics of inverse micelles and oil hydrolysis, take part during oil degradation and are responsible for non-uniform dependence of optical properties on extent of degradation.
