RESUMEN

Urban environments present less environmental heterogeneity in relation to the natural ones, affecting the biodiversity of bats and the ecological processes in which they participate. In this way, we will identify how urbanization influences the structure of bat communities in the municipality of Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. We compared species composition, guilds and bat richness in a gradient that crossed urban, semi-urban and natural areas in the municipality of Goiânia, contained in the Cerrado biome. We captured a total of 775 bats of 16 species distributed in three families. Urban areas had a higher species abundance, while semi-urban areas had a higher species richness. The three types of environments have different compositions, the urban one being more homogeneous, the fauna in these areas is composed of generalist species, which benefit from this process. The diversity present in semi-urban areas is a consequence of the intersection between urban and natural fauna, which is why urban expansion needs to occur in a planned manner to minimize the impacts of this process and ensure the maintenance of biodiversity.

Introduction: Critical care survivors sustain a variety of sequelae after intensive care medicine (ICM) admission, and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has added further challenges. Specifically, ICM memories play a significant role, and delusional memories are associated with poor outcomes post-discharge including a delayed return to work and sleep problems. Deep sedation has been associated with a greater risk of perceiving delusional memories, bringing a move toward lighter sedation. However, there are limited reports on post-ICM memories in COVID-19, and influence of deep sedation has not been fully defined. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate ICM-memory recall in COVID-19 survivors and their relation with deep sedation. Materials/Methods: Adult COVID-19 ICM survivors admitted to a Portuguese University Hospital between October 2020 and April 2021 (second/third "waves") were evaluated 1 to 2 months post-discharge using "ICU Memory Tool," to assess real, emotional, and delusional memories. Results: The study included 132 patients (67% male; median age = 62 years, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation [APACHE]-II = 15, Simplified Acute Physiology Score [SAPS]-II = 35, ICM stay = 9 days). Approximately 42% received deep sedation (median duration = 19 days). Most participants reported real (87%) and emotional (77%) recalls, with lesser delusional memories (36.4%). Deeply sedated patients reported significantly fewer real memories (78.6% vs 93.4%, P = .012) and increased delusional memories (60.7% vs 18.4%, P < .001), with no difference in emotional memories (75% vs 80.4%, P = .468). In multivariate analysis, deep sedation had a significant, independent association with delusional memories, increasing their likelihood by a factor of approximately 6 (OR = 6.274; 95% confidence interval = 1.165-33.773, P = .032), without influencing real (P = .545) or emotional (P = .133) memories. Conclusions: This study contributes to a better understanding of the potential adverse effects of deep sedation on ICM memories in critical COVID-19 survivors, indicating a significant, independent association with the incidence of delusional recalls. Although further studies are needed to support these findings, they suggest that strategies targeted to minimize sedation should be favored, aiming to improve long-term recovery.

BACKGROUND: Males have higher weight and length at birth than females. AIM: To verify the influence of the Y chromosome and the action of intrauterine androgens on weight and length at birth of children with Disorders of Sex Development (DSD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional and retrospective study. Patients with Turner syndrome (TS), complete (XX and XY), mixed (45,X/46,XY) and partial (XY) gonadal dysgenesis (GD), complete (CAIS) and partial (PAIS) androgen insensitivity syndromes and XX and XY congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) were included. Weight and length at birth were evaluated. RESULTS: Weight and length at birth were lower in TS and mixed GD when compared to XY and XX DSD cases. In turn, patients with increased androgen action (117 cases) had higher weight and length at birth when compared to those with absent (108 cases) and decreased (68 cases) production/action. In birthweight, there was a negative influence of the 45,X/46,XY karyotype and a positive influence of increased androgen and gestational age. In birth length, there was a negative influence of the 45,X and 45,X/46,XY karyotypes and also a positive influence of increased androgen and gestational age. CONCLUSIONS: The sex dimorphism of weight and length at birth could possibly be influenced by intrauterine androgenic action.

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the use of the needle arthroscopy in anatomical reconstruction of the lateral ankle. We hypothesized that the needle arthroscopy would allow anatomical reconstruction to be performed under arthroscopy. METHODS: Three patients underwent treatment of chronic ankle instability. The comparative procedure was performed in the following four steps: 1) anteromedial articular exploration (medial/lateral gutter/anterior chamber/syndesmosis); 2)creation of the talar tunnel via the anteromedial arthroscopic approach; 3) anterolateral fibular tunneling; and 4) positioning of the graft by the anteromedial arthroscopic approach. For each of these steps, the planned procedure using the needle arthroscope was compared to the standard arthroscope. For each step, the planned procedure using the needle arthroscopy was compared to the standard arthroscope and the act was classified based on level of difficulty: facilitated, similar, complicated and impossible. RESULTS: The exploration of the medial and lateral gutter, the creation of the tunnel of the talus and graft positioning were not accomplished using the needle arthroscope. While the syndesmosis visualization was facilitated by the needle arthroscope in comparison to the standard arthroscope. CONCLUSION: The anatomical reconstruction of the lateral ankle, using the needle arthroscopy-only approach, was impossible in all three cases, regarding: ankle joint exploration, creation of the tunnel of the talus and graft positioning. The needle arthroscope should not be considered as a "mini arthroscope" but as a new tool with which it is necessary to rethink procedures to take advantage of the benefits of this instrument.

Non-lactose-fermenting Escherichia coli (NLFEC) has a few descriptive studies restricted to human infections. In the present study, isolates of NLFEC obtained from urine samples of dogs with hyperadrenocorticism were characterized regarding their virulence ability, biofilm formation capacity and antimicrobial susceptibility profile. Escherichia coli lactose-fermenting strains from urinary infection in dogs with the same conditions were analysed to provide comparisons. The non-lactose-fermenting E. coli strains were classified as belonging to clade I E. coli, whereas the lactose-fermenting strains were classified in phylogroup B2. All strains presented virulence markers to adhesion, iron acquisition, toxins, colicin and cytotoxin production, and biofilm regulation. Components of the extracellular matrix in addition to the in vitro biofilm formation ability were observed in the strains. Multidrug resistance (MDR) profiles were observed by in vitro susceptibility tests to all NLFEC strains. In summary, non-lactose-fermenting uropathogenic E. coli from dogs behaves similar to lactose-fermenting E. coli, exhibiting MDR profile, and pathogenic potential of promote animal infections.

The effects of pretreatment with ultrasound and an osmotic solution combined with hot air convection drying on the total polyphenol content (TPC), antioxidant activity and microstructural of murtilla skin fruit were evaluated. The effects of ultrasound frequency (0 and 130 kHz), osmotic solution concentration (0 and 70 °Brix) and time (60 or 120 min) on the TPC and the antioxidant activities as measured by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays were evaluated. The TPC and DPPH antioxidant activity decreased significantly (p < 0.05) when ultrasound was applied at 0 °Brix for 60 min. Higher FRAP activity was obtained upon treatment with ultrasound and an osmotic solution for 60 min. The ORAC values did not significantly differ based on the pretreatment methods but decreased when an osmotic solution was applied for 120 min without ultrasound. When ultrasound and the osmotic solution were applied, the skin cells of the dried murtilla fruit became more distorted, resulting in larger spaces between them and causing loss of shape. Although the application of pretreatment procedures before murtilla fruit drying did not positively affect the TPC, DPPH or ORAC individually, the application of a Global Standardized Response based on the followed by a mathematical model adjustment indicated that a 70 °Brix osmotic solution applied for 60 min was the best treatment for preparing murtilla fruit aiming a high antioxidant activity in dried product.

Maintenance of upright standing posture has often been explained using the inverted pendulum model. This model considers the ankle plantarflexors to act as a single synergistic group. There are differences in muscle properties among the medial and lateral gastrocnemius (MG and LG, respectively) and the soleus that may affect their activation. Twelve volunteers participated in an investigation to determine whether the activation of the ankle plantarflexor muscles was modulated according to perturbation direction during unilateral standing perturbations of 1% body mass. High-density surface electromyography (HDS-EMG) was used to determine the amplitude and barycenter of the muscle activation and kinematic analysis was used to evaluate ankle, knee, and hip joint movement. The HDS-EMG amplitude and barycenter of MG and LG were modulated with the perturbation direction (MG p < 0.05; LG p < 0.01; one-way repeated-measures ANOVA). In soleus, the HDS-EMG barycenter modulated across the perturbation direction (p < 0.01 for X&Y coordinates), but the HDS-EMG amplitude did not change. A repeated-measures correlation was used to interpret the HDS-EMG pattern in the context of the kinematics. The relative contribution of MG activation compared to the total gastrocnemii activation was significantly associated with ankle dorsi/plantarflexion (rrm = 0.620), knee flexion/extension and abduction/adduction (rrm = 0.622 and rrm = 0.547, respectively), and hip flexion/extension and abduction/adduction (rrm = 0.653 and rrm = 0.432, respectively). The findings suggest that the central nervous system activates motor units within different regions of MG, LG and SOL in response to standing perturbations in different directions.

INTRODUCTION: Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB) is a recent, minimally invasive procedure utilized to guide endoscopic diagnostic tools to peripheral pulmonary nodules. The place of this technology among other diagnostic procedures remains uncertain. METHOD: We analyzed our 30 first months of ENB used in the diagnosis of 106 lesions in 101 patients, from June 2016 to December 2018. Follow-up and final diagnosis was completed for 95 lesions (90%). RESULTS: ENB was performed for 3.5% of all patients referred for abnormal findings on pulmonary imaging, and represented 19% of second line procedures for peripheral pulmonary lesions. Procedures were performed under general anesthesia, with a mean duration of 35min. The sensitivity of ENB was 64% (95%CI: 52-74%) for lesions with a mean diameter of 21mm, with an improvement over time (sensitivity 69% in the last 18 months). The presence of a bronchus within the lesion (bronchus sign) was associated with an increased sensitivity of 74%. Pneumothorax occurred in 5 patients (5%) of which 4 required drainage. There was no hemoptysis, and no death related to the procedure. CONCLUSION: ENB is a minimally invasive procedure reaching acceptable sensitivity in the most difficult patients. ENB can be recommended for the diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary nodules when no other procedure is successful or possible. Its use as a first choice procedure is, for the moment, limited by the cost, but must be weighed against that of non-diagnostic procedures, and the cost of complications of trans-thoracic lung biopsies.

BACKGROUND: The chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) is recommended as a first-tier test for individuals with developmental delay (DD)/intellectual disability (ID) and/or multiple congenital anomalies. However, owing to high costs, this technique is not widely performed for diagnostic purposes in several countries. The aim of this study was to identify clinical features that could favour the hypothesis of genomic imbalances (GIs) in individuals with DD/ID. METHODS: The sample consisted of 63 individuals, and all of them underwent a detailed evaluation by a clinical geneticist and were investigated by the CMA. They were divided into two groups. Group A composed of 20 individuals with pathogenic copy number variants (CNVs); and group B composed of 43 individuals with normal CMA results or variants of uncertain clinical significance (VUS). RESULTS: Pathogenic GIs were found in 20 cases (32%), including 11 individuals with an abnormal karyotype, VUS was found in five individuals (8%) and the results were normal in 38 individuals (60%). Major anomalies were found in 15/20 (75%) individuals in group A against 35/43 (81%) in group B. Dysmorphisms (≥5) were found in 17/20 (85%) in group A and 41/43 (95%) in group B. The most frequent major anomalies detected in group A were congenital heart disease, epilepsy and renal malformation; and in group B, they were malformations of central nervous system, congenital heart disease, microcephaly, epilepsy and hearing impairment. There was no significant statistical difference among the frequencies in groups A and B. CONCLUSIONS: Evidences point that every individual with DD/ID, with no specific clinical suspicion, should have screening for GIs as a first-tier test, regardless of the presence or absence of additional major anomalies or dysmorphisms. Future studies with a similar design would be helpful, especially in countries where the access to new technologies is still limited.

In this manuscript we describe the development and testing of a bipolar electrode for the simultaneous acquisition of ultrasound (US) images and surface electromyograms (EMGs) from the same muscle region. The developed electrode (bEMG-US) consists of two circular sensing regions (20 mm diameter) with fixed inter-electrode distance (3.5 cm, center-to-center). Both the sensing regions and the external structure of the electrode are made of hydrogel layers separated by insulating materials. The electrical properties (i.e., impedance and noise of the electrode-skin interface) and the quality of EMGs detected with the developed electrodes during electrically elicited contractions were assessed and compared with those provided by commercially available EMG electrodes. The effect of the bEMG-US electrode on US images was evaluated by comparing images detected from the same muscle region with and without the electrode interposed between the US probe and the skin. Tests on five subjects showed that the electrode-skin impedance of bEMG-US electrodes was higher than that of conventional EMG electrodes (mean (range): 15.6 (8.5-21.1) kΩ vs. 8.2 (4.9-16.5) kΩ). Despite higher impedance values, both electrode systems provided comparable, electrode-skin noise levels (1.4 (1.1-1.7) µV vs. 1.3 (1.0-1.5) µV) and M waves (normalized mean square error: 2.6 (0.6-6.8)%). The quality of US images detected with and without the bEMG-US electrode between the US probe and the skin was comparable, as demonstrated by the low errors in the estimation of anatomical variables in the two experimental conditions (range: (0.37-2.35) deg for pennation angle and (-0.31-0.1) cm for muscle thickness). Results demonstrate that bEMG-US can be used to acquire concurrently EMGs and US images from the same muscle region with a negligible effect on the quality of the two detected signals, thus allowing for a simultaneous, multimodal evaluation of muscle activation.

OBJECTIVE: Humans usually tend to control more finely muscle force production in dominant than non-dominant upper limbs. It is well established that motor unit recruitment is a key mechanism by which muscle force is controlled, and we hypothesized that a relatively smaller number of motor units may be recruited in muscles of dominant than non-dominant limbs for any given increase in synaptic input. Hence, we investigated peripheral properties of dominant and non-dominant biceps brachii through the analysis of M-wave responses to incremental electrical stimulation. APPROACH: Current pulses at progressively greater intensities were applied in the proximal region of biceps brachii of 16 subjects while surface electromyograms were recorded with a grid of electrodes in the distal region. M-wave amplitude was averaged across channels and normalized with respect to the maximum amplitude value, separately for each stimulation intensity and limb. Amplitude-current intensity curves were interpolated to provide an equal number of stimulation levels between limbs. Differences between dominant and non-dominant arms were assessed through the average increase in M-wave amplitude for consecutive stimulation intensities (increments). MAIN RESULTS: Wilcoxon's signed-rank test showed that increments in the M-wave amplitude were significantly smaller (p = 0.017) in dominant than non-dominant biceps brachii. SIGNIFICANCE: The results suggest that there was a more gradual recruitment of motor units in biceps brachii of dominant than non-dominant arms. This is in agreement with the hypothesis of a broader spectrum of motor unit recruitment thresholds in the dominant arm, which may contribute to a finer regulation of force production.

PURPOSE: To compare imaging findings on thoracic computed tomography (CT) examination in patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax (SP), depending on their tobacco and/or cannabis consumption. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 83 patients who had thoracic CT for primary SP were prospectively included. There were 65 men and 18 women with a median age of 33 years (IQR: 27; 44 years). The patients were further categorized into three groups according to their smoking habits. Thirteen patients were non-smokers, 38 were tobacco only smokers and 32 were tobacco and cannabis smokers. CT examinations were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of blebs, centrilobular and paraseptal emphysema and lung nodules in each group for comparison. RESULTS: Emphysema was detected in 43/85 patients (51.8%), including 1/13 patients (7.7%) in the non-smoking group, 19/38 patients (50%) in the tobacco only group and 23/32 patients (71.9%) in the tobacco and cannabis smokers, with no difference between tobacco only and tobacco and cannabis smokers. No differences in type and location of emphysema was found between tobacco only and tobacco and cannabis smokers. Tobacco and cannabis smokers with emphysema were significantly younger than tobacco only smokers with emphysema (35 vs. 46 years, respectively) (P=0.009). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of emphysema visible on CT is not different between tobacco and tobacco/cannabis smokers, however, it occurs at a younger age in tobacco and cannabis smokers. This result suggests that cannabis, when added to tobacco, may lead to emphysema at a younger age.

Although goat dairy farms in Brazil may have a higher risk of infection by Neospora caninum than beef farms, risk factor evaluation on a representative population remains to be fully established in Brazil. Accordingly, this study aimed to establish the occurrence of anti-N. caninum antibodies and factors associated with exposure in 406 blood samples from five dairy and three beef goat farms in the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. Anti-N. caninum antibodies were detected by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), with samples considered positive when reacting with dilution ≥ 1:50. A total of 106/406 goats (26.11%; 95% CI: 21.96-30.72%) were seroreactive comprising 2/61 (3.28%), 10/45 (22.22%), 13/50 (26.00%), 17/51 (33.33%) to 29/46 (63.04%) in dairy farms, and from 3/54 (5.56%), 12/50 (24.00%) to 20/49 (40.82%) on the beef farms. No significant associations were found in relation to age, gender, dairy versus beef farms, occurrence of abortions or mummified fetuses, and seroreactivity to N. caninum (P>0.05). In conclusion, goat farms in the state of Paraíba showed the highest occurrence of anti-N. caninum antibodies to date in Brazil.(AU)


Embora as criações caprinas de leite no Brasil possam ter maior probabilidade de risco de infecção por Neospora caninum do que as de carne, a avaliação dos fatores de risco em uma população representativa ainda não está totalmente estabelecida no Brasil. Dessa forma, este estudo teve por objetivo estabelecer a soroprevalência de N. caninum e seus fatores associados à exposição em 406 amostras de sangue de cinco fazendas de leite e três de corte provenientes do estado da Paraíba, região Nordeste do Brasil. A detecção de anticorpos anti-N. caninum foi realizada utilizando-se a reação de imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI), com as amostras consideradas positivas na diluição ≥ 1:50. No total, 106/406 (26,11%; IC 95%: 21,96-30,72%) caprinos foram sororreagentes, variando de 2/61 (3,28%), 10/45 (22,22%), 13/50 (26,00%), 17/51 (33,33%) a 29/46 (63,04%) em fazendas de leite, e de 3/54 (5,56%), 12/50 (24,00%) a 20/49 (40,82%) em fazendas de corte. Não foram observadas associações significativas entre idade, sexo, criação de leite e carne, ocorrência de abortamentos ou fetos mumificados e sororreatividade para N. caninum (P>0,05). Em conclusão, fazendas de caprinos da Paraíba mostraram as mais altas ocorrências de anticorpos anti-N. caninum até o momento no Brasil.(AU)

RESUMEN

The study aimed to evaluate the effects of two different sheep milk-based food matrices - fermented sheep milk and ice cream - with added probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus casei 431) on dental enamel subjected to an in vitro highly cariogenic challenge. Sixty enamel blocks were selected and randomly allocated into five treatment groups (n=12): conventional fermented sheep milk (CFSM), probiotic fermented sheep milk (PFSM), conventional sheep milk ice cream (CSMIC), probiotic sheep milk ice cream (PSMIC) and control using deionized water. The blocks were subjected to highly cariogenic pH cycling and the products were applied (5min), in a blinded way, once a day to simulate a daily use for 8 consecutive days. A microhardness test was performed before and after the treatment to estimate the percentage of microhardness surface loss (% SML). Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) was performed to confirm the mineral loss. All groups had lost microhardness after the experiment. However, CFSM and PFSM exhibited the most positive findings when compared to the control in both ice creams. Scanning electron microscopy showed less mineral loss in CFSM and PFSM compared with CSMIC, PSMIC and control after the cariogenic challenge. Overall, fermented milk decreased mineral loss from enamel subjected to a highly cariogenic challenge, regardless of the presence of probiotics in their composition, which had a higher efficacy compared to ice cream.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine simultaneously the level of physiological arousal and the postural response to external perturbations in people post-stroke compared to age-matched controls to build a more comprehensive understanding of the effect of stroke on postural control and balance self-efficacy. METHODS: Participants stood with each foot on separate force platforms. Ten applications of loads of 2% body weight at the hips perturbed the participant anteriorly under two conditions: investigator-triggered or self-triggered (total 20). Electrodermal activity (EDA; measurement of physiological arousal), electromyography (EMG) of the ankle plantarflexor muscles and anterior-posterior center of pressure measurements were taken pre-perturbation (anticipatory) and post-perturbation (response) and compared between the initial (first two) and final (last two) perturbations. RESULTS: Participants post-stroke demonstrated significantly higher levels of anticipatory EDA and anticipatory paretic plantarflexor EMG during both self- and investigator-triggered conditions compared to controls. Anticipatory EDA levels were higher in the final perturbations in participants post-stroke in both conditions, but not in controls. Habituation of the EDA responses post-perturbation was exhibited in the self-triggered perturbations in controls, but not in participants post-stroke. CONCLUSIONS: Physiological arousal and postural control strategies of controls revealed habituation in response to self-triggered perturbations, whereas this was not seen in participants post-stroke. SIGNIFICANCE: Understanding the physiological arousal response to challenges to standing balance post-stroke furthers our understanding of postural control mechanisms post-stroke.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (SC) is a rare disease with poor prognosis and with strong inter- and intratumor heterogeneity. However, molecular classification is currently focused on activating MET mutations. We sought to better characterize the molecular diversity of SC using mutational signatures that reflect different mutational processes, such as tobacco-associated adducts (signature 4), BRCA1/BRCA2 deficiency (signature 3), or APOBEC enzyme deamination (signatures 2 and 13). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing was carried out in 15 SC patients and on data from 10 previously published cases. Hierarchical clustering and consensus non-negative matrix factorization were carried out for samples classification based on mutational signatures. RESULTS: In the two series, SC distributed between two clusters (C): Csig4 (characterized by signature 4) and Csig2-3-13 (signatures 2, 3, and 13). Csig4 exhibited more frequent MAPK pathway mutations than Csig2-3-13 (pooled series: n = 10/14 versus 2/11, P < 0.05, respectively) and stronger PD-L1 expression (our series: n = 6/9 versus 1/6, P = 0.12). MET alterations were only found in Csig2-3-13 (pooled series: n = 5/11 versus 0/14, P = 0.009), as well as BRCA1/BRCA2 (n = 3/11 versus 0/15), EGFR (n = 1), and IDH1 (n = 1) mutations. Csig2-3-13 patients had better overall survival than Csig4 patients (median: >45 versus 7 months, respectively, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that SC presents at least two clusters comprising different mutational processes, gene alterations, and PD-L1 expression. New potential treatment possibilities are immune checkpoint inhibitors in Csig4 and specific targeted agents in Csig2-3-13. These findings should encourage clinicians to conduct broad molecular and immunological testing in SC patients beyond MET exon 14 alterations.

We investigated the association between an aggrecan gene (ACAN) polymorphism and lumbar disc herniation (LDH). This was a case-control study with quinquennial age and gender groups. The study comprised 119 men and women aged between 20 and 60 from Goiânia (Brazil). Of these, 39 were allocated to the case group (Ca) and 80 to the control group (Ct). We gathered sociodemographic and clinical data, and peripheral blood samples. DNA was isolated for genotyping the ACAN variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) via conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Data were statistically analyzed using the chi-square test, multiple comparison analysis, the Student t-test, and odds ratios, with a level of significance set at 5% (P ≤ 0.05). The groups were homogenous in terms of sociodemographic, anthropometric, and life style variables. The allele score for the ACAN VNTR was significantly lower in volunteers with LDH; the A22 allele was significantly more prevalent in this same group; the Ca group presented greater frequency of short alleles A13-A25, whereas the Ct group presented a higher frequency of long alleles. However, this difference was not statistically significant. In both groups, the most common alleles were A28, A27, and A29, and the A26/A26 genotype was significantly more common in the Ca group. The results showed an association between short alleles and LDH among the investigated adults (Ca), corroborating the hypothesis that aggrecan with shorter repeat lengths can lead to a reduction in the physiological proteoglycan function of intervertebral disc hydration and, consequently, increased individual susceptibility to LDH.

Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common non-acquired immune deficiency syndrome-related malignancy responsible for death. Mutational status is crucial for choosing treatment of advanced NSCLC, yet no data is available on the frequency of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and Kirsten ras (KRAS) mutations and their impact on NSCLC in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients (HIV-NSCLC). All consecutive HIV-NSCLC patients diagnosed between June 1996 and August 2013 at two Paris university hospitals were reviewed, with tumor samples analyzed for EGFR and KRAS mutational status. Overall, 63 tumor samples were analyzed out of 73 HIV-NSCLC cases, with 63% of advanced NSCLC. There were 60 non-squamous and nine squamous cell carcinomas, with EGFR and KRAS mutations identified in two (3.3%) and seven (11.5%) tumors, respectively. The proportion of KRAS mutations was 29% if solely the more sensitive molecular techniques were considered. The two patients with advanced adenocarcinoma harboring EGFR mutations exhibited lasting partial response to EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Overall survival for patients with advanced NSCLC were >30 months for those with EGFR mutations, <3 months for KRAS mutations (n=2), and the median was 9 months [4.1-14.3] for wild-type (n=34). In multivariate analysis, KRAS mutation and CD4<200 cells/µL were associated with poor prognosis (hazard ratio (HR): 24 [4.1-140.2], p=0.0004; HR: 3.1 [1.3-7.5], p=0.01, respectively). EGFR mutation must be investigated in HIV-NSCLC cases due to its predictive and prognostic impact, whereas KRAS mutation is of poor prognostic value. Clinicians should search for drugs dedicated to this target population.

The reliability of triceps surae electromyographic responses to standing perturbations in people after stroke and healthy controls is unknown. High-Density surface Electromyography (HDsEMG) is a technique that records electromyographic signals from different locations over a muscle, overcoming limitations of traditional surface EMG such as between-day differences in electrode placement. In this study, HDsEMG was used to measure responses from soleus (SOL, 18 channels) and medial and lateral gastrocnemius (MG and LG, 16 channels each) in 10 people after stroke and 10 controls. Timing and amplitude of the response were estimated for each channel of the grids. Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and normalized Standard Error of Measurement (SEM%) were calculated for each channel individually (single-channel configuration) and on the median of each grid (all-channels configuration). Both timing (single-channel: ICC=0.75-0.96, SEM%=5.0-9.1; all-channels: ICC=0.85-0.97; SEM%=3.5-6.2%) and amplitude (single-channel: ICC=0.60-0.91, SEM%=25.1-46.6; ICC=0.73-0.95, SEM%=19.3-42.1) showed good-to-excellent reliability. HDsEMG provides reliable estimates of EMG responses to perturbations both in individuals after stroke and in healthy controls; reliability was marginally better for the all-channels compared to the single-channel configuration.

In studies of human identification, obtaining a high standard of outcomes and satisfactory conclusions are directly related to the use of highly polymorphic molecular markers. In addition to the combined DNA index system (CODIS) group, it is also important to implement non-CODIS markers into the analysis, as they increase the power of discrimination. During the identification process, it is essential to consider the genetic variation among distinct groups of populations, as the allele frequencies are directly associated with the power of discrimination. However, the population of Goiás, a State located in Central Brazil, is characterized by a highly mixed population due to its diverse ethnic origins. In this study, a survey of the allelic frequencies in the Goiás population was carried out using a molecular assembly composed of 21 autosomal loci both from and external to the CODIS group. The new data, for some of the markers used, were statistically similar to those from previous studies. This consistency means that the use of these markers might serve as a parameter for future population comparisons. The results from these analyses further our knowledge of the study of human identification.
