RESUMEN

The emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) during wastewater treatment cannot be ignored. The analysis of statistical data from literature based on 126 empirical studies revealed that the geographical factors of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) had a significant impact on N2O emission factors. However, the N2O emission factors of WWTPs in all regions of the world were generally lower than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommended values. In China, the N2O emission factors (in N2O-N/Ninfluent) of WWTPs were approximately 0.000 35-0.065 20 kg·kg-1. Meanwhile, the N2O emission factors of different wastewater treatment processes were also significantly different, especially since the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process had higher emissions. The use of uniform default emission factors for accounting was prone to overestimate N2O emissions, and it is recommended that countries conduct actual monitoring or modeling studies to develop categorical emission factors suitable for local conditions. In addition, the N2O emission factor based on total nitrogen (TN) removal was weakly negatively correlated with TN removal in 126 empirical data, which was more in line with bioprocessing stoichiometry and could provide an accurate accounting method for N2O. To this end, a digital twin model was developed to dynamically simulate a case anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (AAO) WWTP to comprehensively quantify the dynamic emission behavior of N2O, which demonstrated that N2O emissions had significant seasonal and daily variability and were only equivalent to 11% of the calculated value of the emission factor based on the IPCC recommendation. Comparing the scatter linear fitting and categorical mean exponential fitting methods, it was found that the latter could more accurately reflect the negative correlation between the N2O emission factors and the TN removal rate, and an exponential regression equation between the average N2O emission factor based on the amount of TN removed and the TN removal rate was further developed to predict the N2O emission. The dynamic simulation and categorical index fitting methods provided in this study are important references for the accurate accounting of N2O emissions in similar WWTPs and provide help for understanding and responding to the N2O emission problems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hypertension may result in atrial fibrillation (AF) and lipid metabolism disorders. The Sirtuins3 (SIRT3) / AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway has the capacity to regulate lipid metabolism disorders and the onset of AF. We hypothesize that the SIRT3/AMPK signaling pathway suppresses lipid metabolism disorders, thereby mitigating salt-sensitive hypertension (SSHT)-induced susceptibility to AF. METHODS: The study involved 7-week-old male Dahl salt-sensitive that were fed either high-salt diet (8% NaCl; DSH group) or normal diet (0.3% NaCl; DSN group). Then DSH group were administered either oral metformin (MET, an AMPK agonist) or intraperitoneal injection of Honokiol (HK, a SIRT3 agonist). This experimental model allowed for the measurement of SBP, the expression levels of lipid metabolism-related biomarker, pathological examination of atrial fibrosis and lipid accumulation, as well as AF inducibility and AF duration. RESULTS: DSH decrease SIRT3, phosphorylation-AMPK and VLCAD expression, increased FASN and FABP4 expression and concentrations of FFA and TG, atrial fibrosis and lipid accumulation in atrial tissue, enhanced level of SBP, promoted AF induction rate and prolonged AF duration, which are blocked by MET and HK. Our results also showed that the degree of atrial fibrosis was negatively correlated with VLCAD expression, but positively correlated with the expression of FASN and FABP4. CONCLUSIONS: We have confirmed that high-salt diet can result in hypertension, associated atrial tissue lipid metabolism dysfunction. This condition is linked to the inhibition of the SIRT3/AMPK signaling pathway, which plays a significant role in the progression of susceptibility to AF in SSHT rats.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF), and brain and muscle arnt-like protein 1 (Bmal1) regulate circadian blood pressure and is implicated in several fibrotic disorders. Our hypothesis that Bmal1 inhibits atrial fibrosis and susceptibility to AF in salt-sensitive hypertension (SSHT) and our study provide a new target for the pathogenesis of AF induced by hypertension. METHODS: The study involved 7-week-old male Dahl salt-sensitive that were fed either a high-salt diet (8% NaCl; DSH group) or a normal diet (0.3% NaCl; DSN group). An experimental model was used to measure systolic blood pressure (SBP), left atrial ejection fraction (LAEF), left atrial end-volume index (LAEVI), left atrial index (LAFI), AF inducibility, AF duration, and atrial fibrosis pathological examination and the expression of Baml1 and fibrosis-related proteins (TNF-α and α-SMA) in left atrial tissue. RESULTS: DSH increased TNF-α and α-SMA expression in atrial tissue, level of SBP and LAESVI, atrial fibrosis, AF induction rate and AF duration, and decreased Bmal1 expression in atrial tissue, circadian rhythm of hypertension and level of LAEF and LAFI. Our results also showed that the degree of atrial fibrosis was negatively correlated with Bmal1 expression, but positively correlated with the expression of TNF-α and α-SMA. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that a high-salt diet leads to circadian changes in hypertension due to reduction Bmal1 expression, which plays a crucial role in atrial fibrosis and increased susceptibility to AF in SSHT rats.

RESUMEN

Phosphorus (P) is the key in maintaining food security and ecosystem functions. Population growth and economic development have increased the demand for phosphate rocks. China has gradually developed from zero phosphate mining to the world's leading P miner, fertilizer, and agricultural producer since 1949. China released policies, such as designating phosphate rock as a strategic resource, promoting eco-agricultural policies, and encouraging the use of solid wastes produced in mining and the phosphorus chemical industry as construction materials. However, methodological and data gaps remain in the mapping of the long-term effects of policies on P resource efficiency. Here, P resource efficiency can be represented by the potential of the P cycle to concentrate or dilute P as assessed by substance flow analysis (SFA) complemented by statistical entropy analysis (SEA). P-flow quantification over the past 70 years in China revealed that both resource utilization and waste generation peaked around 2015, with 20 and 11 Mt of mined and wasted P, respectively. Additionally, rapidly increasing aquaculture wastewater has exacerbated pollution. The resource efficiency of the Chinese P cycle showed a U-shaped change with an overall improvement of 22.7%, except for a temporary trough in 1975. The driving force behind the efficiency decline was the roaring phosphate fertilizer industry, as confirmed by the sharp increase in P flows for both resource utilization and waste generation from the mid-1960s to 1975. The positive driving forces behind the 30.7% efficiency increase from 1975 to 2018 were the implementation of the resource conservation policy, downstream pollution control, and, especially, the circular agro-food system strategy. However, not all current management practices improve the P resource efficiency. Mixing P industry waste with construction materials and the development of aquaculture to complement offshore fisheries erode P resource efficiency by 2.12% and 9.19%, respectively. With the promotion of a zero-waste society in China, effective P-cycle management is expected.

RESUMEN

Integrated urban water management is a well-accepted concept for managing urban water. It requires efficient and integrated technological solutions that enable system-wide gains via a whole-of-system approach. Here, we create a solid link between the manufacturing of an iron salt, its application in an urban water system, and high-quality bioenergy recovery from wastewater. An iron-oxidising electrochemical cell is used to remove CO2 (also H2S and NH3) from biogas, thus achieving biogas upgrading, and simultaneously producing FeCO3. The subsequent dose of the electrochemically produced FeCO3 to wastewater and sludge removes sulfide and phosphate, and enhances sludge settleability and dewaterability, with comparable or superior performance compared to the imported and hazardous iron salts it substitutes (FeCl2, and FeCl3). The process enables water utilities to establish a self-reliant and more secure supply chain to meet its demand for iron salts, at lower economic and environmental costs, and simultaneously achieve recovery of high-quality bioenergy.

RESUMEN

Motivated by the carbon neutrality target, strategic planning for a low-carbon transition of sludge treatment and disposal in China is challenging due to the unpredictability of technical, regional, socioeconomic, and political factors affecting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study combines the use of a Life Cycle Assessment and the Patient Rule Induction Method, accounting for possibilities that could achieve net-zero carbon emissions by exploring multiple plausible future profiles of sludge treatment and disposal. Results show that reducing sludge landfill and increasing anaerobic digestion are effective methods to facilitate GHG reduction. Achieving carbon neutrality is closely linked to developing a cleaner electricity mix. Based on a cascaded scenario analysis considering regional differences for 31 Chinese provinces, results demonstrated a maximum cumulative reduction potential of 371 Mt CO2 equivalents from 2020 to 2050, equal to 59.84% of the business-as-usual scenario. Together with GHG reductions, terrestrial acidification and ecotoxicity as well as freshwater ecotoxicity are synergistically reduced. However, the shifting environmental burden results in freshwater eutrophication, human toxicity, marine ecotoxicity, marine eutrophication, and photochemical oxidant formation. This study presents a novel method for systematically identifying possible future development paths toward carbon neutrality. The findings may support policy designs for achieving target carbon reduction effects for sludge disposal.

RESUMEN

Numerous elements, such as the degree of sewer degeneration, hydraulics, and geological conditions, influence the extent to which sewage pollutes the unsaturated zones of urban. The present study discussed the influence of sewer exfiltration on the urban unsaturated zone, using nitrogen from domestic sewage as a representative contaminant in combination with experiments, literature studies, modeling and sensitivity analysis. The study shows that soils with high sand content exhibit high permeability and strong nitrification capacity, and groundwater is more susceptible to contamination with nitrate. In contrast, the nitrogen in the clay texture or wet soils has short migration distances and a weak nitrification capacity. However, under such conditions, the accumulation of nitrogen can last for more than 10 years, and there is a possible threat of groundwater contamination due to the detection difficulty. The presence of sewer exfiltration and the damage degree of a sewer can be determined by the ammonium concentration at 1-2 m near the pipe or nitrate above the water table. The sensitivity analysis revealed that all parameters impact the nitrogen concentration in the unsaturated zone to varying degrees, four of which are the primary parameters: defect area, exfiltration flux, saturated water content and first-order response constant. In addition, changes in environmental conditions significantly influence the boundaries of the pollution plume, especially the horizontal. The research data collected in this paper will not only allow for a rigorous assessment of the study scenarios but will also provide data support for other researchers.

RESUMEN

Electrochemical oxidation (EO) is a promising technology for water purification, but indirect environmental burdens may arise in association with consumption of materials and energy during electrode preparation and process operation. This study evaluated the life cycle environmental impacts of emerging EO technology from laboratory scale to industrial scale using prospective life cycle assessment (LCA) on a quantitative basis. Environmental impacts of EO technology were assessed at laboratory scale by comparing three representative anode materials (SnO2, PbO2, and boron-doped diamond) and other two typical processes (adsorption and Fenton method), which verified the competitiveness of the EO process and identified the key factors to environmental hotspots. Thereafter, LCA of scale-up EO was performed to offer guidance for practical application, and the life cycle inventory was compiled upon thermodynamic and kinetic simulations, empirical calculation rules, and similar technical information. Results demonstrated EO to be effective for destructing recalcitrant organic pollutants, but visible direct benefits might be outweighed by increased indirect environmental burdens associated with the preparation of anode materials, use of electrolytes, and energy consumption during the operation stage at both laboratory scale and larger scale. This necessitated attention to overall life cycle profiles by taking into account reactor design, anode materials, electrolyte and flow pattern, and decentralized location with a large share of renewable power station and rigorous contamination control strategies for wastewater treatment plants.

RESUMEN

Machine learning (ML) provides an efficient manner for rapid prediction of the life-cycle environmental impacts of chemicals, but challenges remain due to low prediction accuracy and poor interpretability of the models. To address these issues, we focused on data processing by using a mutual information-permutation importance (MI-PI) feature selection method to filter out irrelevant molecular descriptors from the input data, which improved the model interpretability by preserving the physicochemical meanings of original molecular descriptors without generation of new variables. We also applied a weighted Euclidean distance method to mine the data most relevant to the predicted targets by quantifying the contribution of each feature, thereby the prediction accuracy was improved. On the basis of above data processing, we developed artificial neural network (ANN) models for predicting the life-cycle environmental impacts of chemicals with R2 values of 0.81, 0.81, 0.84, 0.75, 0.73, and 0.86 for global warming, human health, metal depletion, freshwater ecotoxicity, particulate matter formation, and terrestrial acidification, respectively. The ML models were interpreted using the Shapley additive explanation method by quantifying the contribution of each input molecular descriptor to environmental impact categories. This work suggests that the combination of feature selection by MI-PI and source data selection based on weighted Euclidean distance has a promising potential to improve the accuracy and interpretability of the models for predicting the life-cycle environmental impacts of chemicals.

RESUMEN

Recently, every industry has been working to achieve carbon neutrality, and the wastewater sector is no exception. However, little research focuses on the carbon accounting of wastewater treatment and the roadmap to carbon neutrality. Here, to systematically perform accounting, we provide a sketch that describes three boundaries of the wastewater system and propose that the carbon neutrality of the wastewater system is far beyond the plant boundary. Moreover, we identify the direct and indirect carbon emissions of wastewater treatment. In addition to direct emissions of CH4 and N2O, direct fossil CO2 emissions from wastewater treatment should be included in accounting to set accurate guidelines. Next, the technologies that assist in achieving carbon-neutral wastewater treatment both within-the-fence of wastewater treatment plants and beyond the plant boundary are summarized. All measurements of energy recovery, resource recovery, and water reuse contribute to reaching this goal. The concepts of energy neutrality and carbon neutrality are identified. Successful wastewater treatment cases in energy self-sufficiency may not achieve carbon neutrality. Meanwhile, resource recovery methods are encouraged, especially to produce carbon-based materials. Ultimately, the trend of preference for the decentralized sewage treatment system is pinpointed, and systematic thinking to set the urban infrastructure layout as a whole is advocated.

RESUMEN

Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) is a serine/threonine kinase involving lipid metabolism and cardiovascular disease. However, its role in atherogenesis has yet to be determined. The aim of this study was to observe the impact of PLK1 on macrophage lipid accumulation and atherosclerosis development and to explore the underlying mechanisms. We found a significant reduction of PLK1 expression in lipid-loaded macrophages and atherosclerosis model mice. Lentivirus-mediated overexpression of PLK1 promoted cholesterol efflux and inhibited lipid accumulation in THP-1 macrophage-derived foam cells. Mechanistic analysis revealed that PLK1 stimulated the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), leading to activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ)/liver X receptor α (LXRα) pathway and up-regulation of ATP binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) and ABCG1 expression. Injection of lentiviral vector expressing PLK1 increased reverse cholesterol transport, improved plasma lipid profiles and decreased atherosclerotic lesion area in apoE-deficient mice fed a Western diet. PLK1 overexpression also facilitated AMPK and HSL phosphorylation and enhanced the expression of PPARγ, LXRα, ABCA1, ABCG1 and LPL in the aorta. In summary, these data suggest that PLK1 inhibits macrophage lipid accumulation and mitigates atherosclerosis by promoting ABCA1- and ABCG1-dependent cholesterol efflux via the AMPK/PPARγ/LXRα pathway.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the trade-off between energy saving and N2O emission reduction of WWTP under the precise control of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration through model simulation. A long-term dynamic model for full-scale WWTP GHG emissions was established and calibrated with monitored year-round hourly water quality data to quantify the annual GHG emissions from WWTP. Results showed that N2O dominated the direct emission, up to 76.1%, and the variability of N2O generation could better be revealed by dynamic simulation. Furthermore, GHG emissions of the WWTP were mainly contributed by electric energy, among which the blower consumes the most electricity. To reduce the electricity consumption of blowers, improve mechanical efficiency and reduce DO concentration should be considered. DO setting played a significant role in the N2O and CH4 emission, electricity consumption and effluent quality, which was challenging to balance. The ultralow-oxygen (0-1/0.2-1 mg/L) and low oxygen (1-2 mg/L) control strategies were proposed, and their effects on total GHG emissions and effluent water quality were discussed. If the anaerobic environment (DO<0.2 mg/L)could be avoided, the control frequency (high and low) of the DO set-point did not have a significant effect on the emissions of N2O and CH4 and the effluent quality. The ultralow-oxygen strategy (0.2-1 mg/L) with a high-frequency control strategy achieved the lowest GHG emissions under the current energy mix. However, by 2050, as the energy supply gets cleaner, the total GHG emissions of WWTPs with ultralow-oxygen aeration (0.2-1 mg/L) will exceed low-oxygen aeration by 3.6%-4.2%, as N2O dominates 61.6%. Therefore, considering the trade-off between N2O emission and energy saving in WWTP, ultralow-oxygen aeration is a transition scheme to cleaner energy.

RESUMEN

Massive wastewater post-coagulation sludge (WPCS) generated from the tertiary treatment facilities has been regarded as an environmentally burdensome waste. Herein, to take advantage of the abundant amounts of Al/Fe (hydr)oxides, the WPCS was converted into functional char via pyrolysis under CO2 and N2 atmosphere. The higher organic matter content and porous structure of WPCS than drinking water treatment sludge made it a more suitable precursor for biochar and adsorbent production. CO2 expedited the thermolysis of the organics in WPCS and the Fe (hydr)oxides in WPCS further decreased the temperature of CO2-mediated reaction. Therefore, the corresponding products outcompeted the chars in N2, achieving ∼37% higher specific surface area, stronger aromaticity and more amorphous Al and Fe contents of 201.19 ± 2.25 and 27.03 ± 0.56 mg g-1, accompanied by more loss of surface functional groups like carboxyl and hydroxyl. Accordingly, WPCS chars under CO2 showed superior performance for removing phosphate (15.58 ± 0.19 mg g-1), along with the adsorption of heavy metal (37.17 ± 1.25 mg g-1 of Pb (II)) and dye (14.45 ± 0.11 mg g-1 of methylene blue). In sum, this study proposes a win-win strategy to convert coagulation sludges into resources and a new candidate for multifunctional adsorbent production.

RESUMEN

Atrial fibrosis is the basis for the occurrence and development of atrial fibrillation (AF) and is closely related to the Warburg effect, endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and mitochondrion dysfunctions-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous signalling molecule with cardioprotective, anti-myocardial fibrosis and improved energy metabolism effects. Nevertheless, the specific mechanism by which H2S improves the progression of atrial fibrosis to AF remains unclear. A case-control study of patients with and without AF was designed to assess changes in H2S, the Warburg effect, and ERS in AF. The results showed that AF can significantly reduce cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) and 3-mercaptopyruvate thiotransferase (3-MST) expression and the H2S level, induce cystathionine-ß-synthase (CBS) expression; increase the Warburg effect, ERS and atrial fibrosis; and promote left atrial dysfunction. In addition, AngII-treated SD rats had an increased Warburg effect and ERS levels and enhanced atrial fibrosis progression to AF compared to wild-type SD rats, and these conditions were reversed by sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), dichloroacetic acid (DCA) or 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA) supplementation. Finally, low CSE levels in AngII-induced HL-1 cells were concentration- and time-dependent and associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, the Warburg effect and ERS, and these effects were reversed by NaHS, DCA or 4-PBA supplementation. Our research indicates that H2S can regulate the AngII-induced Warburg effect and ERS and might be a potential therapeutic drug to inhibit atrial fibrosis progression to AF.

RESUMEN

Sewer deterioration caused by sulfide-induced concrete corrosion is spreading worldwide. Within the strategies to overcome this problem, dosing iron salts into the pipeline has attracted more attention. However, there is not yet research that evaluates this method whether it is overall environmentally friendly. Here, we conducted a comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to adjudge the benefits of dosing ferric chloride over non-dosing option in three different H2S concentration levels (High, Medium, Low). Compared with taking no precautions, dosing ferric chloride performs better for all impact categories only in High H2S situation, which can reduce the environmental impacts by 10% to 50%. In Medium H2S situation, dosing ferric chloride shows lower environmental impacts of Global Warming, Fossil Fuel Depletion, Acidification, and Eutrophication, while leads to the deterioration of Human Toxicity and Freshwater Ecotoxicity by 10% and 13%, respectively. In Low H2S situation, dosing ferric chloride performs even worse for all impact categories. Therefore, from an LCA perspective, this study recommends iron salts dosing technology to be applied in severe corrosion conditions caused by high H2S concentrations. Contribution analysis shows that asphalt and diesel consumed during the sewer construction and renovation dominate all impact categories for non-dosing option, whereas the main contributor of Human Toxicity and Freshwater Ecotoxicity is shifted to ferric chloride production in dosing option, average at around 50%. Sensitivity analysis on the length of pipes protected by iron salts confirms that the initial dosing location is more preferable to be set at upstream of the sewer system. From an LCA perspective, as alternatives to ferric chloride, ferrous chloride is superior in all impact categories, and ferric sulfate could reduce the toxicity-related impacts and other effects at the expense of exacerbation of acidification. In the end, a systematic optimization of salts dosing should be considered in urban sewer management practice.

RESUMEN

Sand biofilters (SBFs) are commonly used to remove manganese (Mn(II)) from drinking water. Mn(II) load variation frequently occurs in SBFs due to fluctuating influent Mn(II) concentrations or flow rates. Therefore, it is important to understand the responses of microbial biofilms in SBFs to environmental disturbances and how they affect Mn(II) oxidation efficiency. Here, the responses of microbial ecological networks and Mn(II) removal in SBFs to increasing Mn(II) load were investigated. The Mn(II) removal efficiency in two SBFs remained at 99.8% despite an increase in influent Mn(II) from 2 mg/L to 4 mg/L, but significantly deteriorated (50.1-58.5%) upon increasing the filtration rate. A canonical correlation analysis of the microbial communities indicated that the local Mn(II) concentration and biofilter depth impacted community compositions of biofilms. The dominant species within the biofilms exhibited clear stratification, with simple associations in the upper layer of the SBFs and more complex interspecies interactions in the bottom layers. Putative manganese-oxidizing bacteria Hyphomicrobium and Pedomicrobium dominated the microbiomes in different layers of SBFs, and changed relatively little in abundance when Mn(II) and filtration rate increased. The community networks showed that biofilm microbiomes in SBFs were resilient to the disturbance of Mn(II) load, primarily via regulating microbial interactions. High manganese loads negatively affected the functional modules for Mn(II) removal. Furthermore, the relatively rare species Candidatus Entotheonella palauensis was identified as a module hub, implying taxa with low abundances can have important roles in ecosystem function. These results shed new light on the ecological rules guiding responses of microbiomes in sand biofilters to environmental stress.

RESUMEN

Sponge city construction (SCC) in China, as a new concept and a practical application of low-impact development (LID), is gaining wide popularity. Modelling tools are widely used to evaluate the ecological benefits of SCC in stormwater pollution mitigation. However, the understanding of the robustness of water quality modelling with different LID design options is still limited due to the paucity of water quality data as well as the high cost of water quality data collection and model calibration. This study develops a new concept of 'robustness' measured by model calibration performances. It combines an automatic calibration technique with intensive field monitoring data to perform the robustness analysis of storm water quality modelling using the SWMM (Storm Water Management Model). One of the national pilot areas of SCC, Fenghuang Cheng, in Shenzhen, China, is selected as the study area. Five water quality variables (COD, NH3-N, TN, TP, and SS) and 13 types of LID/non-LID infrastructures are simulated using 37 rainfall events. The results show that the model performance is satisfactory for different water quality variables and LID types. Water quality modelling of greenbelts and rain gardens has the best performance, while the models of barrels and green roofs are not as robust as those of the other LID types. In urban runoff, three water quality parameters, namely, SS, TN and COD, are better captured by the SWMM models than NH3-N and TP. The modelling performance tends to be better under heavy rain and significant pollutant concentrations, denoting a potentially more stable and reliable design of infrastructures. This study helps to improve the current understanding of the feasibility and robustness of using the SWMM model in sponge city design.

RESUMEN

To address the clogging issues in stormwater filtration systems, a drinking water treatment residual (DWTR)-based granule (DBG) substrate was developed herein by pyrolyzing and granulating the DWTR with bentonite and corncob. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure studies indicated that fabricating into DBG stabilized the Al and heavy metals in DWTR and restrained the leaching risk. Then the removal performance of phosphate (PO4-P) and heavy metal ions by the DWTR and DBG was evaluated in batch and laboratory-scale column experiments. Results from batch tests showed that the amount of Pb(Ⅱ) adsorbed by DBG (18.47 ± 0.56 mg g⁻1) was approximately 2.3 times of that adsorbed by DWTR (8.05 ± 0.19 mg g⁻1), whereas the PO4-P adsorption capacity of DBG (8.63 ± 0.24 mg g⁻1) was much lower than that of DWTR (25.33 ± 0.81 mg g⁻1). This could be ascribed to the addition of corncob and bentonite (at a mass ratio of 20% and 40% in DBG, respectively), which provided extremely high cation exchange capacity for the Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption, while no effective PO4-P adsorption component was involved. Moreover, the pyrolysis process could improve the Pb(Ⅱ) and PO4-P adsorption capacity of the raw-mixture by 42% and 7%, whereas granulation process decreased those of the pyrolysis-mixture by 15% and 20%, respectively, owing to the reduction of accessible surface area in the DBG. Under various stormwater runoff conditions, the involvement of DBG in stormwater filtration systems exerted consistently fancy performance of Cu(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ) and PO4-P removal, with average removal rates of over 86.20% and desorption rates of less than 3.50%, indicating irreversible and strong complexion between the contaminants and DBG. The DBG column manifested good permeability and stable hydraulic conductivity (2.74-2.52 m d⁻1) over a 54-day rainfall period, which was beneficial to address the clogging issue of DWTR. Overall, this study provides an alternative pathway to enhance the hydraulic condition and treatment performance of the stormwater filtration systems for urban runoff management.

RESUMEN

Coal chemical industry (CCI) generally utilizes reverse osmosis (RO) for water reclamation, which generates a highly concentrated stream containing refractory organic substances and high-concentration total dissolved solids (TDS). To address this issue, the present work focuses on volume reduction of RO concentrate (ROC) produced from CCI by forward osmosis (FO). We investigated the effects of membrane orientation and draw solution (DS) concentration on FO performance. Foulant removal was tested by using chemical cleaning, physical cleaning and osmotic backwash (OB). AL-FS (active layer facing feed solution) mode outcompeted AL-DS (active layer facing draw solution) mode, achieving a flux of 26.4 LMH, 92.5% water reclamation and energy consumption of 0.050 kWh·m-3 with 4 M NaCl as DS. The FO process was able to reject >98% SO4 2-, Mg2+and Ca2+, 92-98% Si and 33-55% total organic carbon (TOC). Ten-cycle (10 × 20 h) accelerated fouling test demonstrated approximately 30% flux decline in association with Si-containing foulants, which could be removed almost completely through OB with 97.1% flux recovery. This study provides a proof-of-concept demonstration of FO for volume reduction and water reclamation of ROC produced from CCI, making the treatment of ROC more efficient and more energy effective.

RESUMEN

Phosphorus (P) is an essential and limiting nutrient for agricultural systems, where the demand for agricultural products such as food, feed, and bio-fuel are the major drivers of the intensification of agricultural production systems. Globally, maize is one of three main cereal crops, a main feedstock for animal production and a substrate for the production of bio-ethanol. This study investigated P flows through the multiple utilization systems of maize (as represented by the subsystems of food, feed and energy production) at a crop level of 2016 as reference year and made future predictions of P flows for the year 2030 based on different scenarios for food-feed-energy systems in China. For 2016, the subsystem of animal production resulted in the highest waste of P due to inappropriate manure management, but the subsystem of value-added products (Bio-fuel production, distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), maize-oil) showed the lowest P use efficiency (39%). From the value-added subsystem, 17% of P from the process flow to the subsystem of animal production as DDGS, and 61% of P is wasted associated with wastewater and sludge. Future scenarios of structural adjustments in the maize consumption system predict that the supply of maize for animal feed will be threatened if the policy of the Biofuel National Promotion before 2020 is fully implemented in China, as current maize production will not meet the future demand of food, feed and energy simultaneously. The results emphasized the use of P waste resources and better sludge management from a systems perspective. This also implied the importance of exploring coordinated development and integrated strategies for sustainable P flow management in multiple utilization systems.
