RESUMEN

Adiponectin is an important anti-inflammatory hormone secreted from adipose tissue. The high-molecular-weight form of adiponectin (HMW) closely correlates with insulin sensitivity in human beings. This study uses a novel method of size-exclusion gel chromatography combined with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to measure HMW feline adiponectin and determine its relationship to leptin, cholesterol, and insulin sensitivity as cats gain and lose weight. In addition, total adiponectin and its messenger RNA expression in subcutaneous adipose tissue were measured. No correlations were found between total serum adiponectin and subcutaneous adipose messenger RNA expression, fat mass, or measures of insulin sensitivity. This study demonstrates that cats have high percentages of HMW adiponectin. Although weak correlations between HMW adiponectin and fat mass were detected, additional cats are needed to determine if the correlations are significant.

RESUMEN

This pilot study introduces a novel vibratory stimulation-based occlusal splint (VibOS) for management of pain related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The study sample consisted of 10 patients (mean age: 40·5 ± 13·7 years, male/female: 3/7) who were using stabilisation splints for more than 2 months prior to the study onset and still complained of pain. Patients utilised the active and inactive VibOS during 15 days in a crossover designed clinical trial. The analysed variables were self-reported VAS pain levels and number of painful sites to palpation (PSP). Statistical analysis was performed with repeated measures anova. At baseline, mean VAS pain levels for group I and II were 45·6 ± 21·0 mm and 37·4 ± 16·3 mm, respectively. Comparison between these baseline values showed no statistical difference (P > 0·05, unpaired t-test). In group I, the inactive VibOS caused a slight increase in VAS pain levels, whereas the active VibOS promoted a significant decrease in VAS pain levels and PSP (P < 0·01). In group II, which received the active VibOS first, a significant decrease in VAS levels (P < 0·05) and in PSP (P < 0·01) was observed. No significant decrease in VAS pain levels or PSP (P > 0·05) was observed with the use of the inactive VibOS. In conclusion, this study demonstrated a good tendency of this novel VibOS in the alleviation of painful symptoms related to TMD after a 15-day management period compared to control VibOS.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of piroxicam associated with low-level laser therapy compared with single therapies in 32 patients presenting temporomandibular joint arthralgia in a random and double-blind research design. The sample, divided into laser + piroxicam, laser + placebo piroxicam and placebo laser + piroxicam groups, was submitted to the treatment with infrared laser (830 nm, 100 mW, 28 s, 100 J cm(-2) ) at 10 temporomandibular joint and muscle points on each side during four sessions concomitant to take one capsule a day of piroxicam 20 mg during 10 days. The treatment was evaluated throughout four sessions and 30 days follow-up through visual analogue scale (VAS), maximum mouth opening and joint and muscle (temporal and masseter) pain on palpation. The results showed that all the study groups had a significant improvement in the VAS scores (P < 0·05), and there were no significant group differences. Piroxicam was effective in the reduction of joint and muscle pain on palpation (P < 0·05) and showed the lowest temporal pain (P = 0·02) at the 30-day follow-up. The combination of low-level laser therapy and piroxicam was not more effective than single therapies in the treatment of temporomandibular joint arthralgia. The use of piroxicam was more effective in the following 30 days.

RESUMEN

A series of six 1,5-(ethylmethyl)semibullvalenes (1a <==> 1a', 2 <==> 2', 3 <==>3') and two 4(2)-substituted semibullvalenes (4 <==> 4'), each undergoing Cope equilibria between nondegenerate valence tautomers, was investigated by carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy at a range of temperatures in several different solvents. Gompper's treatment of substituent perturbation was extended, specifically accounting for the effects of the substituents on chemical shifts, to allow the determination of the thermodynamic parameters for these skewed equilibria. These new treatments were used to determine the population difference (f - f ') between the valence tautomers and the perturbation thermodynamic quantities DeltaH(P), DeltaS(P), and DeltaG(P). The slow-exchange limit was reached for the parent 1,5-(ethylmethyl)semibullvalenes 3a <==> 3a' from which it was established that the preferred valence tautomer is 3a with the ethyl group on the cyclopropane ring. Despite considerable effort, the slow-exchange limit could not be reached in any of our other remotely substituted semibullvalenes. Provided that the ethyl group always prefers the cyclopropyl position as in 3a, the 1-ethyl-5-methylsemibullvalenes 1a, 2, and 3 are more stable by DeltaH(P) = 0.7-1.7 kJ mol(-1) than their valence tautomers 1a', 2', and 3'. In the directly substituted semibullvalenes (4 left harpoon ovet right harpoon 4'), the preferred valence tautomers 4a and 4b have the bromine atom or the nitrile group on the vinyl position (C(4)) rather than on the cyclopropane ring (C(2)) and are more stable than 4a' and 4b' by DeltaH(P) = 4.8 and 7.0 kJ mol(-1), respectively.

RESUMEN

Behavioural isolation plays a critical role in several recent models of speciation. A detailed understanding of the process of speciation requires analysis of taxonomic groups that have not completed reproductive isolation. We studied D. silvestris and D. heteroneura because they are still in the process of divergence: behavioural isolation between them is incomplete, and neither postzygotic nor ecological isolation has been detected. Behavioural isolation is due to the failure of courtships between male D. silvestris and female D. heteroneura: there is no postzygotic isolation from either parental species. The F1 hybrids are as successful in courtship with parental individuals as same-species pairs, which suggests that the hybrids resemble male D. heteroneura or female D. silvestris in some behaviour patterns that are crucial to mating success. We searched for this crucial resemblance by examining courtship between F1 hybrids and the parental adults. We found that successful F1 males are somewhat more similar than unsuccessful F1 males to D. heteroneura males, but nevertheless they were intermediate between males of the two species. We also found that in both species the presence of female wings is necessary for courtship to proceed to copulation. These results reinforce an earlier report that behavioural isolation between these species is largely attributable to the decision as to whether to court at all, rather than to the details of courtship. RESUMEN

The reliability of skin prick tests (SPT) may be insufficient for the screening of occupational inhalant allergies. The influence of different flour extracts on the SPT in flour allergic subjects has not been compared previously. In this study, SPT reactions against two commercially available rye and wheat flour extracts and individually prepared extracts from flour samples were compared in 35 patients with known bakers' rhinitis. Flour sensitization was confirmed by a positive nasal provocation test (NPT) and/or serum-specific IgE. The sensitivity of NPT with a combination of rye and wheat flour extracts of individual flour samples was 94%. Wheat and/or rye flour specific IgE (RAST>/=2) was true positive in 86%. The sensitivity of the SPT was 94% for individual rye flour extracts compared to 38% and 59% for two commercially available rye flour extracts and 88% for individual wheat flour extract compared to 53% and 48% for commercially available wheat flour extracts. SPT and sIgE did not reveal a significant difference in prevalence between rye and wheat flour sensitization. Thirty healthy volunteers served as the control group. Three control subjects with histamine equivalent SPT reactions to grass pollen had a positive SPT reaction against individual flour extracts, whereas NPT with undiluted individual flour extracts was negative in all controls. SPT with individually prepared flour extracts appears to be sensitive for the demonstration of inhalant flour allergy. Our findings show that extracts of individual flour samples rather than commercially available extracts should be used for both SPT and NPT if flour allergy is suspected.

RESUMEN

Epidermoid cysts are rare lesions in the head and neck. Most often the are located in the submental region, although they sometimes can impose certain diagnostic problems. We report the case of a 19-year-old girl who presented with a fluctuant, painless, midline swelling of the floor of her mouth that had persisted for three months. Ultrasonographic examination showed a 5 x 5 x 4 cm cystic tumor with the unusual aspect of multiple smaller spherical formations. The differential diagnosis of the lesion included dermoid cysts, epidermoid cysts, ranula and parasitic lesions. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance tomography were not diagnostic. The patient underwent excision of the lesion, during which the cyst was completely removed. Histopathological diagnosis was consistent with an epidermoid cyst. The striking sonographic aspect of multiple spherical formations in the lesion was caused by multiple spherical keratin formations.

RESUMEN

Exogenous substance P (10-80 nmol/ml) induced a dose-dependent increase in nasal symptoms in asymptomatic allergics with rhinitis (n = 15) and controls (n = 8), but did not release any mediators. However, comparing the antigen-evoked release of mediators into nasal secretions with that of a substance P-pretreated antigen challenge, we found a significant enhancement of kinins, TAME esterase activity (p < 0.05-0.01), and histamine (p < 0.001, NS) 10-20 min after antigen challenge. These results suggest 1) that substance P-induced increase in nasal congestion is mediated through direct neurokinin receptor activation independently of mast cell activation, and 2) that during the allergic reaction there is a substance P-mast cell interaction that enhances the mediator response to nasal allergen challenge.

RESUMEN

VLBI observations of the extremely gamma-bright blazar PKS 0528+134 at 8, 22, 43, and 86 GHz reveal a strongly bent one-sided-core jet structure with at least three moving and two apparently stationary jet components. At the highest observing frequencies the brightest and most compact jet component (the VLBI core) is unresolved with an upper limit to its size of approximately 50 microarcsec corresponding to approximately 0.2 parsec [H0 = 100 km.s-1.Mpc-1 (megaparsec-1), q0 = 0.5, where H0 is Hubble constant and q0 is the deceleration parameter]. Two 86-GHz VLBI observations performed in 1993.3 and 1994.0 reveal a new jet component emerging with superluminal speed from the core. Linear back-extrapolation of its motion yields strong evidence that the ejection of this component is related to an outburst in the millimeter regime and a preceding intense flare of the gamma-flux density observed in early 1993. This and the radio/optical "light curves" and VLBI data for two other sources (S5 0836+710 and 3C 454.3) suggest that the observed gamma-radiation might be Doppler-boosted and perhaps is closely related to the physical processes acting near the "base" of the highly relativistic jets observed in quasars.

RESUMEN

In the framework of the European yeast genome sequencing project, we have determined the nucleotide sequence of the cosmid clone 233 provided by F. Galibert (Rennes Cedex, France). We present here 9464 base pairs of this cosmid located on the left arm of Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome X. This sequence contains two new open reading frames and includes the published sequences of the RADH gene (also identified as SRS2/HPR5) and the 3'-end of the gene BCK1/SLK1/SSP31. Deletion mutants of the two unknown genes J0909 and J0911 are viable.

RESUMEN

It was shown in two different provocation models (nasal and bronchial provocation) that substance P (SP) may play an important role in the neurogenic inflammatory response in upper and lower airway disease. (1) Pretreatment with SP augments the antigen challenge response of the nasal mucosa. (2) The baseline bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) concentrations of SP are elevated 8-fold in allergies (pollen asthma) as compared with normals, even outside of season. (3) The SP concentration in BAL increases significantly (p less than 0.05) after bronchial allergen provocation. These findings support a previous hypothesis of an abnormally elevated activity of nonadrenergic-noncholinergic excitatory nerves and are in accordance with the results of a decreased activity of neutral endopeptidase exaggerating neurogenic inflammatory responses in the airways, including bronchomotor tone hyperresponsiveness.
