Objective: This study aims to investigate the association between the systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) and suicide attempt (SA) in children and adolescents with first-episode, drug-naïve Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 263 MDD patients hospitalized at the Third Hospital of Fuyang City between 2020 and 2022. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the presence of previous SA. The study compared the differences in SII and clinical characteristics between the two groups and used the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to determine the optimal critical value of SII and the area under the curve. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the independent risk factors for SA. Results: Compared with the patients without SA history, the patients with a personal history of SA had a higher mean HDRS scores (Z=-2.369, p=0.018), higher mean neutrophil count (Z=-2.870, p=0.004), higher mean platelet count (Z=-2.155, p=0.031), and higher mean SII (Z=-3.170, p=0.002). The optimal critical SII determined by the ROC curve was 548.15 (sensitivity = 63.2%, specificity = 83.1%), and the area under the curve was 0.661. After adjusting for gender, age, BMI, illness duration and HDRS score, the risk of total SA in patients with high SII was 8.296 times higher than in those with low SII (OR = 8.296, 95% CI: 3.803-18.095, P < 0.001), The risk of recent SA was 13.922 times higher in patients with high SII than in those with low SII (OR = 13.922, 95% CI: 5.587-34.693, p < 0.001). However, high SII was not a risk factor for past SA (OR = 0.547, 95% CI: 0.062-4.842, P=0.587). Conclusion: SII may be an inexpensive, easily accessible strategy that can assist in determining suicide risk in adolescents with MDD.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical value of systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) based on peripheral blood neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet count in evaluating the subtype and severity of depression in patients with depressive disorder. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in the Third People's Hospital of Fuyang City from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2022. The data included sociodemographic information at admission, clinical data, discharge diagnosis and inflammatory markers. Patients were divided into low SII group and high SII group according to the optimal threshold of SII determined by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve). Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the correlation between moderate/major depression and SII level. Results: Compared to the low SII group, the high SII group had a higher age level (χ2 = 7.663, p = 0.006), more smokers (χ2 = 9.458, p = 0.002), more moderate/major depression patients (χ2 = 45.645, p < 0.001), and a higher proportion of patients with accompanying somatic symptoms (χ2 = 14.867, p < 0.001). In the final logistic regression model, after controlling for confounding factors, SII at admission was significantly associated with moderate/major depression [ß =1.285, p < 0.001; odds ratio (95% confidence intervals) = 3.614 (2.693-4.850)]. Patients with high SII scores were 3.614 times more likely to have moderate/severe depression than those with low SII scores. We propose a cut-off value of SII =540.78 (sensitivity = 36.4% and specificity = 80.3%) according to the maximum Youden index. Conclusion: Our research indicates that SII may be a useful, repeatable, convenient, and affordable index to identify moderate/major depression in depressive disorder.

Schizophrenia presents a chronic progressive course and requires long-term treatment. The current treatment of schizophrenia is mainly based on antipsychotic drugs, but drugs are ineffective for the negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunction of schizophrenia, and long-term medication may increase the burden on the endocrine and circulatory systems of patients. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is a noninvasive, painless, safe, efficacious, and economical physical therapy measure that has achieved good results in the treatment of schizophrenia. This paper reviews the progress of research on the clinical application of transcranial magnetic stimulation in the treatment of schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to find crucial microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with the development of atrial fibrillation (AF), and then try to elucidate the possible molecular mechanisms of miRNAs in AF. METHODS: The miRNA microarray, GSE68475, which included 10 right atrial appendage samples from patients with persistent AF and 11 samples from patients with normal sinus rhythm, was used for the analysis. After data preprocessing, differentially expressed miRNAs were screened using limma. Target genes of miRNAs were predicted using miRWalk2.0. We then conducted functional enrichment analyses for miRNA and target genes. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and module analyses for target genes were performed. Finally, transcription factors (TFs)-target genes regulatory network was predicted and constructed. RESULTS: Seven genes, including CAMK2D, IGF2R, PPP2R2A, PAX6, POU3F2, YWHAE, and AP2A2, were targeted by TFs. Among these seven genes, CAMK2D (targeted by miR-31-5p), IGF2R (targeted by miR-204-5p), PAX6 (targeted by miR-223-3p), POU3F2 (targeted by miR-204-5p), YWHAE (targeted by miR-31-5p), and AP2A2 (targeted by miR-204-5p) belonged to the top 10 degree genes in the PPI network. Notably, MiR-204-5p, miR-31-5p, and miR-223-3p had more target genes. Besides, CAMK2D was enriched in some pathways, such as adrenergic signaling in cardiomyocytes pathway and cAMP signaling pathway. YWHAE was enriched in the Hippo signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: miR-31-5p played a crucial role in cardiomyocytes by targeting CAMK2D and YWHAE via cAMP and Hippo signaling pathways. miR-204 was involved in the progression of AF by regulating its target genes IGF2R, POU3F2, and AP2A2. On the other hand, miR-223-3p functioned in AF by targeting PAX6, which was associated with the regulation of apoptosis in AF. This study would provide a theoretical basis and potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of AF. (Anatol J Cardiol 2020; 23: 324-33).

Cognitive deficits and psychiatric disorders have been regarded as the most common clinical symptoms of methamphetamine (MA) users. Accumulating evidence has shown that liver disease may be involved in cognitive deficits and psychiatric disorders. This study examines whether cognitive deficits and psychiatric symptoms are associated with serum levels of liver biomarkers in MA users. Cognition was assessed by the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Psychiatric symptoms were assessed by the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90). Liver function was assessed by serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total protein, albumin, globulin, Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), triglyceride, total cholesterol, and glucose concentrations in 106 MA addicts and 76 controls. Compared to control subjects, MA users had greater severity of psychotic symptoms on the dimension of somatization, depression, anxiety, psychoticism, addiction, and global severity index in SCL-90, and lower scores of cognition, including the total RBANS score and all five subscales. The globulin levels were increased, while the albumin, albumin/globulin, and ApoB levels were decreased. ApoB levels were positively correlated with immediate memory, attention, and total RBANS score. Furthermore, stepwise multivariate regression analysis indicated that ApoB levels were associated with immediate memory, attention, and total RBANS score. The findings of this study suggest that MA addicts might experience cognitive deficits, psychiatric disorders, and liver damage. Serum ApoB levels may be involved in cognitive deficits; thus, improving liver function may help to treat cognitive deficits and psychiatric disorders in MA addicts.
