OBJECTIVE: To update the evidence on the effectiveness and safety of hyaluronic acid gel combined with lidocaine for treating nasolabial folds. METHODS: We searched electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science using subject headings and keywords associated with hyaluronic acid and lidocaine in the context of nasolabial folds. Inclusion criteria were met by randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy and safety of hyaluronic acid gel with or without lidocaine. Outcomes measured included visual pain analog scale (VAS) scores, wrinkle severity scale scores, and adverse events. The quality of RCTs was evaluated using the Cochrane Randomized Controlled Trials Scale, which encompasses criteria such as randomization, allocation concealment, blinding, dropout, and withdrawal rates, and was assessed by two independent reviewers. RESULTS: No significant difference in overall wrinkle severity rating scale scores was observed between HA with lidocaine and HA without lidocaine [MD = 0.08, 95% CI (- 0.09, 0.24), P = 0.36]. However, there was a significant reduction in pain scale scores (VAS) [SMD = -2.47, 95% CI (- 4.15, - 0.79), P = 0.004]; no significant differences were noted in the ncidence of at least one adverse event [RR = 0.97, 95% CI (0.90, 1.05), P = 0.51]; and there were no significant differences in swelling [RR =  0.99, 95% CI (0.92, 1.06), P = 0.80], erythema [RR = 1.01, 95% CI (0.91, 1.11), P = 0.91], bruising [RR = 0.99, 95% CI (0.89, 1.13), P = 0.86], itching [RR = 1.03, the 95% CI (0.88, 1.21), P = 0.74], induration [RR = 1.04, 95% CI (0.92, 1.17), P = 0.55], and papules [RR = 0.77, 95% CI (0.58, 1.02), P = 0.07]. There was a significantly lower incidence of tenderness [RR = 0.91, 95% CI (0.86, 0.97), P = 0.002] only in the control group. Sensitivity analysis confirmed the stability of results across all outcome indicators with low sensitivity and high confidence. Subgroup analysis indicated higher wrinkle severity scores among East Asians compared to Europeans and Americans. CONCLUSIONS: HA containing lidocaine significantly reduces pain and is comparable in effectiveness and safety of HA without lidocaine. The clinical effects appear more pronounced in East Asians. The nuclear pore complex regulates nucleocytoplasmic transport by means of a tightly synchronized suite of biochemical reactions. The physicochemical properties of the translocating cargos are emerging as master regulators of their shuttling dynamics. As well as being affected by molecular weight and surface-exposed amino acids, the kinetics of the nuclear translocation of protein cargos also depend on their nanomechanical properties, yet the mechanisms underpinning the mechanoselectivity of the nuclear pore complex are unclear. Here we show that proteins with locally soft regions in the vicinity of the nuclear-localization sequence exhibit higher nuclear-import rates, and that such mechanoselectivity is specifically impaired upon knocking down nucleoporin 153, a key protein in the nuclear pore complex. This allows us to design a short, easy-to-express and chemically inert unstructured peptide tag that accelerates the nuclear-import rate of stiff protein cargos. We also show that U2OS osteosarcoma cells expressing the peptide-tagged myocardin-related transcription factor import this mechanosensitive protein to the nucleus at higher rates and display faster motility. Locally unstructured regions lower the free-energy barrier of protein translocation and might offer a control mechanism for nuclear mechanotransduction.

Addressing environmental factors has recently been recommended to curb the growing trend of anemia in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) generated by dust storms were concentrated in place with a high prevalence of anemia. In a multicounty, multicenter study, we analyzed the association between anemia and life-course averaged exposure to dust PM2.5 among children aged <5 years based on 0.65 million records from 47 LMICs. In the fully adjusted mixed effects model, each 10 µg/m3 increase in life-course averaged exposure to dust PM2.5 was associated with a 9.3% increase in the odds of anemia. The estimated exposure-response association was nonlinear, with a greater effect of dust PM2.5 exposure seen at low concentrations. Applying this association, we found that, in 2017, among all children aged <5 years in the 125 LMICs, dust PM2.5 contributed to 37.98 million cases of anemia. Results indicated that dust PM2.5 contributed a heavier burden than all of the well-identified risk factors did, except for iron deficiency. Our study revealed that long-term exposure to dust PM2.5 can be a novel risk factor, pronouncedly contributed to the burden of child anemia in LMICs, affected by land degradations or arid climate.

Transdermal drug delivery systems for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have garnered substantial attention due to their great potential to overcome limitations observed in conventional oral or injection strategies, including limited selectivity and adverse effects on extra-articular tissues. Microneedles (MNs) appear to be highly desirable carriers for transdermal drug delivery of RA. However, microneedles typically are unable to keep up with the flexibility of joints, which decreases the effectiveness of administration. In this study, we developed a flexible microneedles (FMNs) delivery system. And gelatin was employed for the fabrication of flexible backings for microneedles owing to its excellent ductility and biocompatibility. We achieved synergisticphotothermal-chemotherapy of RA by incorporating the chemical drug Tacrolimus (TAC) and the photothermal agent gold nanorods (AuNRs) into dissolving microneedles. Results showed a high mechanical strength of the proposed FMNs. In the animal model of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA), it is indicated that the prepared FMNs inhibited the expression of related inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1ß and TNF-α while enhancing bone repair and other related factors. Thus, the combination therapy of FMNs-mediated hyperthermia and chemotherapy can serve as a novel and synergistic treatment option for RA.

Current in vitro models struggle to balance the complexity of human diseases with suitability for large-scale drug tests. While 3D cultures simulate human tissues, they lack cellular intricacy, and integrating these models with high-throughput drug screening remains a challenge. Here, we introduce a method that uses self-assembling nucleic acid nanostructures decorated living cells, termed NACs, to create spheroids with a customizable 3D layout. To demonstrate its uniqueness, our method effectively creates designer 3D spheroids by combining parenchymal cells, stromal cells, and immune cells, leading to heightened physiological relevance and detailed modeling of complex chronic diseases and immune-stromal interactions. Our approach achieves a high level of biological fidelity while being standardized and straightforward to construct with the potential for large-scale drug discovery applications. By merging the precision of DNA nanotechnology with advanced cell culture techniques, we are streamlining human-centric models, striking a balance between complexity and standardization, to boost drug screening efficiency.

Platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (PEVs) showing great potential in wound healing have attracted increasing attention recently. Nondestructive isolation and effective utilization strategies are highly conducive for PEVs developing into recognized therapeutic entities. Here, we present an efficient strategy for PEV isolation and bacterial infected wound healing based on self-assembled DNA microflowers. First, DNA microflowers are prepared using rolling circle amplification. Then, the hydrophobic interaction between cholesteryl modified on DNA microflowers and the phospholipid bilayer membrane of PEVs leads to the formation of a network structure with improved mechanical strength and the separation of PEVs from biological samples. Finally, controlled release of PEVs is achieved through bacterial-induced hydrogel degradation. In vitro experiments demonstrate the obtained DNA hydrogel with good cytocompatibility and therapeutic potential. Taken together, the DNA microflower-based hydrogels with bioadhesive, self-healing, tunable mechanical properties and bacteria-responsive behavior offer substantial potential for EV isolation and wound healing.

Cell spheroids (esp. organoids) as 3D culture platforms are popular models for representing cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions, bridging the gap between 2D cell cultures and natural tissues. 3D cell models with spatially organized multiple cell types are preferred for gaining comprehensive insights into tissue pathophysiology and constructing in vitro tissues and disease models because of the complexities of natural tissues. In recent years, an assembly strategy using cell spheroids (or organoids) as living building blocks has been developed to construct complex 3D tissue models with spatial organization. Here, a comprehensive overview of recent advances in multispheroid assembly studies is provided. The different mechanisms of the multispheroid assembly techniques, i.e., automated directed assembly, noncontact remote assembly, and programmed self-assembly, are introduced. The processing steps, advantages, and technical limitations of the existing methodologies are summarized. Applications of the multispheroid assembly strategies in disease modeling, drug screening, tissue engineering, and organogenesis are reviewed. Finally, this review concludes by emphasizing persistent issues and future perspectives, encouraging researchers to adopt multispheroid assembly techniques for generating advanced 3D cell models that better resemble real tissues.

Bioaerosols are a subset of important airborne particulates that present a substantial human health hazard due to their allergenicity and infectivity. Chemical reactions in atmospheric processes can significantly influence the health hazard presented by bioaerosols; however, few studies have summarized such alterations to bioaerosols and the mechanisms involved. In this paper, we systematically review the chemical modifications of bioaerosols and the impact on their health effects, mainly focusing on the exacerbation of allergic diseases such as asthma, rhinitis, and bronchitis. Oxidation, nitration, and oligomerization induced by hydroxyl radicals, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide are the major chemical modifications affecting bioaerosols, all of which can aggravate allergenicity mainly through immunoglobulin E pathways. Such processes can even interact with climate change including the greenhouse effect, suggesting the importance of bioaerosols in the future implementation of carbon neutralization strategies. In summary, the chemical modification of bioaerosols and the subsequent impact on health hazards indicate that the combined management of both chemical and biological components is required to mitigate the health hazards of particulate air pollution.

A novel coupling process to replace the traditional multi-stage anammox process-sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) coupled anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) system was designed, which solved problems of nitrate produced in anammox process and low nitrate conversion rate caused by nitrite accumulation in SAD process. Different filter structures (SAD filter and anammox granular sludge) were investigated to further explore the excellent performance of the novel integrated reactor. The results of sequential batch experiments indicated that nitrite accumulation occurred during SAD, which inhibited the conversion of nitrate to dinitrogen gas. When SAD filter and anammox granular sludge were added to packed bed reactor simultaneously, the nitrate removal rate increased by 37.21% and effluent nitrite concentration decreased by 100% compared to that achieved using SAD. The stratified filter structure solved groove flow. Different proportion influence of SAD filter and anammox granular sludge on the stratified filter structure was evaluated. More suitable ratio of SAD filter to anammox granular sludge was 2:1. Proteobacteria (57.26%), Bacteroidetes (20.12%) and Chloroflexi (9.95%) were the main phyla. The dominant genera of denitrification functional bacteria were Thiobacillus (39.80%), Chlorobaculum (3.99%), norank_f_PHOs-HE36 (2.90%) and Ignavibacterium (2.64%). The dominant genus of anammox bacterium was Candidatus_Kuenenia (3.05%).

The study investigated the impact of UV-C irradiation on peach fruit quality during postharvest storage, with a focus on aroma changes and the mechanisms involving lipoxygenase metabolism. Results showed that UV-C irradiation at a dosage of 1.5 kJ/m2 was found to preserve the quality attributes of peach fruit during ambient storage, as evidenced by high flesh firmness, inhibition of weight loss and respiration rate, as well as high values of L* and ascorbic acid. Meanwhile, UV-C irradiation led to an increase in the contents of aroma-related volatiles, particularly esters and lactones, compared to non-irradiated fruit. Our results suggested that the enhanced emission of aroma-related volatiles in UV-C irradiated peach fruit was linked to elevated levels of unsaturated fatty acids. Besides, UV-C induced the expressions and activities of enzymes in the lipoxygenase pathway, thus promoting the synthesis of esters and lactones, which contribute to the enhanced aroma in peach fruit.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been associated with reduced human fecundity. However, the attributable burden has not been estimated for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where the exposure-response function between PM2.5 and the infertility rate has been insufficiently studied. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and human fecundity indicators, namely the expected time to pregnancy (TTP) and 12-month infertility rate (IR), and then estimated PM2.5-attributable burden of infertility in LMICs. METHODS: We analyzed 164,593 eligible women from 100 Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 49 LMICs between 1999 and 2021. We assessed PM2.5 exposures during the 12 months before a pregnancy attempt using the global satellite-derived PM2.5 estimates produced by Atmospheric Composition Analysis Group (ACAG). First, we created a series of pseudo-populations with balanced covariates, given different levels of PM2.5 exposure, using a matching approach based on the generalized propensity score. For each pseudo-population, we used 2-stage generalized Gamma models to derive TTP or IR from the probability distribution of the questionnaire-based duration time for the pregnancy attempt before the interview. Second, we used spline regressions to generate nonlinear PM2.5 exposure-response functions for each of the two fecundity indicators. Finally, we applied the exposure-response functions to estimate number of infertile couples attributable to PM2.5 exposure in 118 LMICs. RESULTS: Based on the Gamma models, each 10 µg/m3 increment in PM2.5 exposure was associated with a TTP increase by 1.7 % (95 % confidence interval [CI]: -2.3 %-6.0 %) and an IR increase by 2.3 % (95 %CI: 0.6 %-3.9 %). The nonlinear exposure-response function suggested a robust effect of an increased IR for high-concentration PM2.5 exposure (>75 µg/m3). Based on the PM2.5-IR function, across the 118 LMICs, the number of infertile couples attributable to PM2.5 exposure exceeding 35 µg/m3 (the first-stage interim target recommended by the World Health Organization global air quality guidelines) was 0.66 million (95 %CI: 0.061-1.43), accounting for 2.25 % (95 %CI: 0.20 %-4.84 %) of all couples affected by infertility. Among the 0.66 million, 66.5 % were within the top 10 % high-exposure infertile couples, mainly from South Asia, East Asia, and West Africa. CONCLUSION: PM2.5 contributes significantly to human infertility in places with high levels of air pollution. PM2.5-pollution control is imperative to protect human fecundity in LMICs.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) has a high morbidity and mortality. Ferroptosis is a phenomenon in which metabolism and cell death are closely related. The role of ferroptosis-related genes in the progression of CRC is still not clear. Therefore, we screened and validated the ferroptosis-related genes which could determine the prevalence, risk and prognosis of patients with CRC. Methods: We firstly screened differentially expressed ferroptosis-related genes by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Then, these genes were used to construct a risk-score model using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression algorithm. The function and prognosis of the ferroptosis-related genes were confirmed using multi-omics analysis. The gene expression results were validated using publicly available databases and qPCR. We also used publicly available data and ferroptosis-related genes to construct a prognostic prediction nomogram. Results: A total of 24 differential expressed genes associated with ferroptosis were screened in this study. A three-gene risk score model was then established based on these 24 genes and GPX3, CDKN2A and SLC7A11 were selected. The significant prognostic value of this novel three-gene signature was also assessed. Furthermore, we conducted RT-qPCR analysis on cell lines and tissues, and validated the high expression of CDKN2A, GPX3 and low expression of SLC7A11 in CRC cells. The observed mRNA expression of GPX3, CDKN2A and SLC7A11 was consistent with the predicted outcomes. Besides, eight variables including selected ferroptosis related genes were included to establish the prognostic prediction nomogram for patients with CRC. The calibration plots showed favorable consistency between the prediction of the nomogram and actual observations. Also, the time-dependent AUC (>0.7) indicated satisfactory discriminative ability of the nomogram. Conclusions: The present study constructed and validated a novel ferroptosis-related three-gene risk score signature and a prognostic prediction nomogram for patients with CRC. Also, we screened and validated the ferroptosis-related genes GPX3, CDKN2A, and SLC7A11 which could serve as novel biomarkers for patients with CRC.

In this work, iron-phosphorus based composite biochar (FPBC) was prepared by modification with potassium phosphate and iron oxides for the removal of heavy metal ions from single and mixed heavy metal (Pb and Cd) solutions. FTIR and XPS characterization experiments showed that the novel modified biochar had a greater number of surface functional groups compared to the pristine biochar. The maximum adsorption capacities of FPBC for Pb(II) and Cd(II) were 211.66 mg·g-1 and 94.08 mg·g-1 at 293 K. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by FPBC followed the proposed two-step adsorption kinetic model and the Freundlich isothermal adsorption model, suggesting that the mechanism of adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by FPBC involved chemical adsorption of multiple layers. Mechanistic studies showed that the introduction of -PO4 and -PO3 chemisorbed with Pb(II) and Cd(II), and the introduction of -Fe-O increased the ion exchange with Pb(II) and Cd(II) during the adsorption process and produced precipitates such as Pb3Fe(PO4)3 and Cd5Fe2(P2O7)4. Additionally, the abundant -OH and -COOH groups also participated in the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II). In addition, FPBC demonstrated strong selective adsorption of Pb(II) in mixed heavy metal solutions. The Response Surface Methodology(RSM) analysis determined the optimal adsorption conditions for FPBC as pH 5.31, temperature 26.01 °C, and Pb(II) concentration 306.30 mg·L-1 for Pb(II). Similarly, the optimal adsorption conditions for Cd(II) were found to be pH 5.66, temperature 39.34 °C, and Cd(II) concentration 267.68 mg·L-1. Therefore, FPBC has the potential for application as a composite-modified adsorbent for the adsorption of multiple heavy metal ions.

BACKGROUND: Drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) has shown efficacy for treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT). However, whether DEB-TACE is superior to conventional TACE (cTACE) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of DEB-TACE versus cTACE in treating HCC with PVTT. METHODS: The study was conducted in a tertiary care center in Southeast China. HCC patients with PVTT were randomized at a 1:1 ratio to the DEB-TACE or cTACE groups. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS), and the secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and incidence of adverse events (AEs). An independent review committee assessed the radiologic response according to the modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST). AEs were assessed by the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 4.0. Systemic therapies were not limited. RESULTS: Between September 2018, and July 2020, 163 patients were randomized to undergo DEB-TACE (n=82) or cTACE (n=81). Nine patients were excluded, and 154 patients were included in the final analysis; the median age was 55 years (range, 24-78 y), and 140 (90.9%) were male. The median PFS in the DEB-TACE group was 6.0 months (95% CI, 5.0 to 10.0) versus 4.0 months (95% CI, 3.0 to 5.0) in the cTACE group (hazard ratio, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.42 to 0.95; P=0.027). The DEB-TACE group showed a higher response rate (51[66.2%] vs. 36 [46.8%]; P=0.0015) and a longer median OS (12.0 months [95% CI, 9.0 to 16.0] vs. 8.0 months [95% CI, 7.0 to 11.0], P=0.039) than the cTACE group. Multivariate analysis showed that the treatment group, ALBI score, distant metastasis and additional TKIs were the four independent prognostic factors correlated with PFS. In addition, the treatment group, PVTT group and combined with surgery were independently correlated with OS. AEs were similar in the two groups, and postembolization syndrome was the most frequent AEs. CONCLUSION: DEB-TACE is superior to cTACE in treating HCC patients with PVTT due to the improved PFS and OS with an acceptable safety profile and may become a promising treatment strategy for HCC patients with PVTT. Inflammation is a key mechanism underlying the adverse health effects of exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Bioactive lipids in the arachidonic acid (ARA) pathway are important in the regulation of inflammation and are reportedly altered by PM2.5 exposure. Ceramide-1-phosphate (C1P), a class of sphingolipids, is required to initiate ARA metabolism. We examined the role of C1P in the alteration of ARA metabolism after PM2.5 exposure and explored whether changes in the ARA pathway promoted systemic inflammation based on a panel study involving 112 older adults in Beijing, China. Ambient PM2.5 levels were continuously monitored at a fixed station from 2013 to 2015. Serum cytokine levels were measured to assess systemic inflammation. Multiple bioactive lipids in the ARA pathway and three subtypes of C1P were quantified in blood samples. Mediation analyses were performed to test the hypotheses. We observed that PM2.5 exposure was positively associated with inflammatory cytokines and the three subtypes of C1P. Mediation analyses showed that C1P significantly mediated the associations of ARA and 5, 6-dihydroxyeicosatrienoic acid (5, 6-DHET), an ARA metabolite, with PM2.5 exposure. ARA, 5, 6-DHET, and leukotriene B4 mediated systemic inflammatory response to PM2.5 exposure. For example, C1P C16:0 (a subtype of C1P) mediated a 12.9 % (95 % confidence interval: 3.7 %, 32.5 %) increase in ARA associated with 3-day moving average PM2.5 exposure, and ARA mediated a 27.1 % (7.8 %, 61.2 %) change in interleukin-8 associated with 7-day moving average PM2.5 exposure. Our study indicates that bioactive lipids in the ARA and sphingolipid metabolic pathways may mediate systemic inflammation after PM2.5 exposure.

Upper-limb rehabilitation devices are essential in restoring and improving the motor function of hemiplegic patients. However, developing a product design that meets the needs of users is challenging. Current design tools and methods suffer from limitations such as a single model, poor synergy between integrated models, and subjective bias in analysing user needs and translating them into product attributes. To address these issues, this study proposes a new structural design decision-making model based on Behaviour Analysis (B), Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), and Teoriya Resheniya Izobreatatelskikh Zadatch (TRIZ theory). The model was developed and applied to design an upper-limb rehabilitation exoskeleton for hemiplegia. In this paper, an empirical investigation was conducted in several rehabilitation hospitals in Xuzhou City and used user journey mapping to identify potential failure points in the behaviour process. Then, the fault models were ranked according to the Fuzzy Risk Priority Number (FRPN) calculated by FMEA and used TRIZ theory to determine principles for resolving contradictions and generating creative design solutions for the product. By integrating B, FMEA, and TRIZ theory, it eliminated subjective bias in product design, improved the design decision-making process, and provided new methods and ideas for designing assistive rehabilitation devices and similar products. The framework of the proposed approach can be used in other contexts to develop effective and precise product designs that meet the needs of users.

We prepared polyoxomolybdates with methylammonium countercations from methylammonium monomolybdate, (CH3NH3)2[MoO4], through two dehydrative condensation methods, acidifying in the aqueous solution and solid-state heating. Discrete (CH3NH3)10[Mo36O112(OH)2(H2O)14], polymeric ((CH3NH3)8[Mo36O112(H2O)14])n, and polymeric ((CH3NH3)4[γ-Mo8O26])n were selectively isolated via pH control of the aqueous (CH3NH3)2[MoO4] solution. The H2SO4-acidified solution of pH < 1 produced "sulfonated α-MoO3", polymeric ((CH3NH3)2[(MoO3)3(SO4)])n. The solid-state heating of (CH3NH3)2[MoO4] in air released methylamine and water to produce several methylammonium polyoxomolybdates in the sequence of discrete (CH3NH3)8[Mo7O24-MoO4], discrete (CH3NH3)6[Mo7O24], discrete (CH3NH3)8[Mo10O34], and polymeric ((CH3NH3)4[γ-Mo8O26])n, before their transformation into molybdenum oxides such as hexagonal-MoO3 and α-MoO3. Notably, some of their polyoxomolybdate structures were different from polyoxomolybdates produced from ammonium molybdates, such as (NH4)2[MoO4] or (NH4)6[Mo7O24], indicating that countercation affected the polyoxomolybdate structure. Moreover, among the tested polyoxomolybdates, (CH3NH3)6[Mo7O24] was the best negative staining reagent for the observation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus using transmission electron microscopy.

Embedded three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting utilizing a granular hydrogel supporting bath has emerged as a critical technique for creating biomimetic scaffolds. However, engineering a suitable gel suspension medium that balances precise bioink deposition with cell viability and function presents multiple challenges, particularly in achieving the desired viscoelastic properties. Here, a novel κ-carrageenan gel supporting bath is fabricated through an easy-to-operate mechanical grinding process, producing homogeneous sub-microscale particles. These sub-microgels exhibit typical Bingham flow behavior with small yield stress and rapid shear-thinning properties, which facilitate the smooth deposition of bioinks. Moreover, the reversible gel-sol transition and self-healing capabilities of the κ-carrageenan microgel network ensure the structural integrity of printed constructs, enabling the creation of complex, multi-layered tissue structures with defined architectural features. Post-printing, the κ-carrageenan sub-microgels can be easily removed by a simple phosphate-buffered saline wash. Further bioprinting with cell-laden bioinks demonstrates that cells within the biomimetic constructs have a high viability of 92% and quickly extend pseudopodia, as well as maintain robust proliferation, indicating the potential of this bioprinting strategy for tissue and organ fabrication. In summary, this novel κ-carrageenan sub-microgel medium emerges as a promising avenue for embedded bioprinting of exceptional quality, bearing profound implications for the in vitro development of engineered tissues and organs.

High concentrations of organic aerosol (OA) occur in Asian countries, leading to great health burdens. Clean air actions have resulted in significant emission reductions of air pollutants in China. However, long-term nation-wide trends in OA and their causes remain unknown. Here, we present both observational and model evidence demonstrating widespread decreases with a greater reduction in primary OA than in secondary OA (SOA) in China during the period of 2013 to 2020. Most of the decline is attributed to reduced residential fuel burning while the interannual variability in SOA may have been driven by meteorological variations. We find contrasting effects of reducing NOx and SO2 on SOA production which may have led to slight overall increases in SOA. Our findings highlight the importance of clean energy replacements in multiple sectors on achieving air-quality targets because of high OA precursor emissions and fluctuating chemical and meteorological conditions.
