The level and the time course of accumulation of endogenous interferon were studied in the blood sera of mice experimentally infected with Lassa virus by the intracerebral route. The level of interferon correlated with case-fatality rate of the animals which may be important for the understanding of the pathogenesis of arenavirus infections.

Seven cases of a combined course of syphilis ad HIV infection are described. All the patients are men, homo- and bisexuals. No apparent clinical features of syphilis in these patients were detectable. Recommendations on the strategy of syphilis treatment in patients with HIV infection are given.

In experimental infection of mice with Lassa virus, the infectious virus could be detected in all the organs and brain tissues tested. Histopathological lesions were demonstrated in cerebral and spinal cord tissues only. Roentgen irradiation in a dose of 500 R and cyclophosphamide protected mice against a lethal Lassa virus dose. Cyclosporin A in various doses exerted no effect on the outcome of the acute infection. The adoptive transfer of splenocytes from mouse donors inoculated intraperitoneally prevented the development of lethal disease symptoms and death of mice-recipients. It is suggested that immunocompetent cells are involved in the development and outcome of experimental infection of mice with Lassa virus.

The paper is concerned with the diagnosis, clinical picture and the treatment policy of 7 patients suffering from associated syphilis and HIV infection. Some peculiarities were marked in the course and clinical picture of the syphilitic infection: the reduction of the time of the development of secondary syphilis, odd clinical manifestations, and early damage to the nervous system. Recommendations are given for CSF examination and treatment of all the patients with associated syphilis and HIV infection. Attention is paid to the necessity of examining all the patients with HIV infection for diseases transmitted sexually and vice versa.

The traditional oral examination in clinical dermatology is not devoid of shortcomings, the principal of which are subjective estimation of the students' knowledge and a random control. A written examination, representing a complex of tests, is devoid of these drawbacks. The authors share their two-year experience with such examinations, combined with the control of mastering the practical skills in dermatology and venereology. The major advantages of a written test-based examination in a clinical discipline are an objective estimation of the students' knowledge, a universal complex of tests equally difficult for all the students, permitting the control of knowledge in practically all sections of the curriculum, and a more rational organization of the examination session. Such examinations are recommended for dermatology and venereology chairs.

The levels of lysozyme in the serum and organs of Shienshilla male rabbits infected with Nico-s treponema were determined. The studies showed that the lues infection affected the factors of non-specific immunity, which was evident from the changes in the lysozyme titer. Administration of benzylpenicillin resulted in a marked decrease in the lysozyme titer in all cases. The experiments are indicative of advisability of studying the use of crystalline lysozyme in combination with antibiotics for increasing the efficacy of therapy of syphilitic infection.
