RESUMEN

The first autochthonous case of rickettsiosis is reported here. The case occurred in the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, a protected area of the City of Buenos Aires, in August 2022, where 4 species of ticks were found, namely Amblyomma aureolatum, Ixodes auritulus sensu lato, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu stricto and Amblyomma triste. The epidemiological, ecological, clinical and laboratory aspects that allowed timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment are also described.

Germination traits are components of invasion potential, and comparing seed traits in sympatric native and invasive species can offer insights into the invasion process. We characterized seed germination traits and how they influenced the success of Eragrostis mexicana, a native species, and Eragrostis tenuifolia, an exotic species (Poaceae) in Mexico, in the context of their potential for biological invasion. Seeds from both species were collected from four sites in a natural protected area in Mexico City, and the germination of seeds of different ages was conducted in experiments at different temperatures. E. tenuifolia exhibited higher germination percentages than the native E. mexicana across all treatments. Seed age had differential effects, with older seeds of the native E. mexicana germinating better, while E. tenuifolia performed better with younger seeds. Temperature positively impacted germination for both species, although E. mexicana was limited at lower temperatures. Exotic E. tenuifolia can germinate over a wider temperature range with earlier germination rates, and generate a seed bank lasting several years, which may contribute to naturalization. The importance of germination traits in the context of invasive species establishment underscores the potential role of seed banks in facilitating biological invasions.

A Mexican isolate of the nematophagous fungus Arthrobotrys musiformis was obtained from a soil sample from the Chapultepec ecological reserve zone, in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. This isolate demonstrated an important predatory activity (74.9%) against the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus (L3) and its fungal liquid culture filtrates (LCF) grown in two media showed the following highest nematocidal activities (NA): In Czapek-DoxBroth (CzDoxB) 80.66% and potato-dextrose broth (PDB) 49.84%. Additionally, two major compounds derived from carboxylic acids and two derivates from alkane group were identified by GC-MS. These compounds have been associated to many biological activities. On the other hand, the protein profile analysis by SDS-electrophoresis followed by a zymogram revealed a 10 kDa protein with protease activity. This study provides important information for future experiments focused to explore the potential use of this protein as well as the identified bioactive compounds presents in the LCF as potential candidates against sheep haemonchosis.

O texto reflete sobre as possibilidades criativas do encontro analista-caipira. Apresenta o arquétipo do caipira como uma expressão do ántrophos, ou do arquétipo do homem natural. Considera a energia do arquétipo do caipira como uma expressão instintiva e natural da individuação. Relaciona o arquétipo do caipira com o arquétipo do tolo e da criança enquanto portadores da função inferior da cultura. Apresenta paralelos entre as atitudes do caipira e do analista diante dos mistérios de uma natureza psíquica e propõe essa parceria como propícia ao trabalho clínico. Amplifica os símbolos presentes numa cultura caipira que guardam significados potentes, a serem recuperados no ritual da análise. Aponta para a experiência caipira do arquétipo da totalidade e conclui que a cultura caipira se mantém como uma reserva ecológica da nossa psique.


The text makes a reflection over the creative possibilities when a meeting analyst-rustic man takes place. It presents the archetype of the rustic man as an instinctive and natural expression of individuation. It relates the archetype of the fool and the child, while bears of a lower range culture function. It presents a parallel between the attitudes of the rustic man and those of the analyst in face of the mysteries of a psychic nature and proposes this partnership as adequate for the clinical work. It expands the symbols inherent to a rustic man culture, which encompass potent meaning, to be recuperated at the analysis ritual. It points out a rustic man experience on a total kind archetype and ends up by concluding that the rustic man culture maintains itself as an ecological reserve of our psyche.


El texto reflexiona sobre las posibilidades creativas del encuentro analista-paleto. Presenta el arquetipo "caipira" como expresión del antropos, o arquetipo del hombre natural. Considera la energía del arquetipo paleto como una expresión instintiva y natural de la individuación. Relaciona el arquetipo de lo caipira con el arquetipo del tonto y el niño como portadores de la función inferior de la cultura. Presenta paralelismos entre las actitudes del palurdo y del analista frente a los misterios de naturaleza psíquica y propone esta asociación como conducente al trabajo clínico. Amplifica los símbolos presentes en la cultura de una naturaleza campesina que encierran significados potentes, para ser recuperados en el ritual de análisis. Señala la experiencia caipira del arquetipo de la totalidad y concluye que la cultura caipira sigue siendo una reserva ecológica de nuestra psique.

Abstract Introduction: Seed removal by ants is an interaction that may greatly affect the dynamic and structure of the vegetation. This aspect is well known for granivorous ants; however, there is little information on the effect of omnivorous ants. Objective: To assess the potential impact of the omnivorous ant Dorymyrmex insanus on vegetation. Methods: In the Pedregal Reserve, Mexico City, we identified the items in the refuse piles of ten ant colonies, for one year, covering the rainy and dry seasons. For each season we calculated seed diversity and analyzed the possible relationship between seed size and their abundance in the refuse piles, with regression models. We also did germination tests with seeds of Tagetes micrantha, comparing seeds from piles and from plants. Results: D. insanus removed seeds of 19 plant species as well as plant remains (such as leaves, twigs, roots), and remains of insects. Seed diversity was higher in the rainy season but the greatest abundance was in the dry season. When analyzing the relationship between seed length and abundance in the refuse piles, we found that the ants preferred seeds of around 10 mm. We also found that more seeds of T. micrantha germinated when they were previously handled by ants. Conclusions: The ant D. insanus actively participates in the removal of seeds from several species, favoring germination, and seasonality affects the selectivity of resources.


Resumen Introducción: La remoción de semillas por parte de las hormigas es una interacción que puede afectar en gran medida la dinámica y estructura de la vegetación. Este aspecto es bien conocido para las hormigas granívoras; sin embargo, hay poca información sobre el efecto de las omnívoras. Objetivo: Evaluar el impacto potencial de la hormiga omnívora Dorymyrmex insanus sobre la vegetación. Métodos: En la Reserva Pedregal, Ciudad de México, se identificaron los ítems en el área del basurero para diez colonias de hormigas, durante un año, cubriendo la época de lluvia y sequía. Para cada temporada calculamos la diversidad de semillas y analizamos la posible relación entre el tamaño de las semillas y su abundancia en los basureros, con modelos de regresión. También hicimos pruebas de germinación con semillas de Tagetes micrantha, comparando las encontradas en los basureros con las provenientes de las plantas. Resultados: D. insanus eliminó semillas de 19 especies de plantas, así como restos de plantas (hojas, ramitas, raíces) y restos de insectos. La diversidad de semillas fue mayor en la estación lluviosa pero la mayor abundancia lo fue en la estación seca. Al analizar la relación entre la longitud de las semillas y la abundancia en el área del basurero, encontramos que las hormigas preferían semillas de alrededor de 10 mm. También encontramos que germinaron más semillas de T. micrantha cuando fueron manipuladas previamente por hormigas. Conclusiones: La hormiga D. insanus participa activamente en la remoción de semillas de varias especies, favoreciendo la germinación, y la estacionalidad afecta la selectividad de recursos.

Los hongos anamorfos constituyen un grupo muy diverso microscópicos cuya forma de reproducción es asexual a través de conidios. Actúan como agentes de degradación de la materia vegetal en el suelo, lo cual es un proceso clave en el reciclaje de nutrientes. Debido a la importancia y al vacío de información que existe sobre estos hongos en Guatemala, en este trabajo se identificaron 12 especies, por medio de características microscópicas; luego de la extracción de las estructuras fúngicas desarrolladas en hojas, ramas y semillas recolectadas en una parcela de la Reserva Ecológica Cayalá de la Ciudad de Guatemala. El material de referencia está depositado en la colección de hongos anamorfos de la Micoteca de Macrohongos de Guatemala "Lic. Rubén Mayorga Peralta" (MICG)


Anamorphic fungi are a diverse group of microscopic fungi that reproduce asexually through conidia. They degrade plant debris on the soil, which is a key process in nutrients recycling. Because of its importance and the lack of information regarding to these fungi in Guatemala, In this article, 12 species were identified through microscopic characteristics, after extraction of fungal structures developed in leaves, twigs and seeds collected at the Cayalá Ecological Reserve in Guatemala City. Reference materials are placed at the anamorphic fungi collection at Micoteca de Macro hongos de Guatemala, "Dr. Ruben Mayorga Peralta" (MICG).

Taim Hydrological System is a unique subtropical wetland in southern Brazil harboring an exceptional biological diversity. In 1978, an ecological reserve was established to protect part of this area from increasing anthropogenic impacts in its surroundings. Fishes have been poorly investigated in this system. Based on a multi-gear sampling study encompassing several years (2001-2005), and on comparisons with previous fish inventories, we provide an up-to-date species list of fishes occurring in the Taim Wetland. In addition, we made the first preliminary description of fish dominance patterns found in the main lakes of the system (Flores, Nicola, Jacaré and Mangueira). Checklist comparison resulted in 62 fish species distributed in 24 families, with Characidae (19 species) and Cichlidae (7) showing the highest species richness. Six species are cited for the first time in the reserve: Trachelyopterus lucenai (Auchenipteridae), Hoplosternum littorale (Callichthyidae), Rineloricaria cadeae (Loricariidae), Eigenmannia trilineata (Sternopygidae), Odontesthes mirinensis and O. perugiae (Atherinopsidae). Apparently, the black catfish T. lucenai invaded the system in the last decade and became one of the dominant species in the pelagic waters. Although differences in gears hindered direct comparisons, differences in species composition and dominance patterns between shallow margins and pelagic waters of lakes seem to occur in the lakes. A more diverse assemblage dominated by small fishes ( 5cm) occurred in the protected, vegetated lakes margins. In contrast, an assemblage with lower species richness comprised of larger fishes (> 15 cm) seemed to dominate in pelagic waters.


O Sistema Hidrológico do Taim é um banhando subtropical localizado no sul do Brasil que abriga uma diversidade biológica excepcional. Em 1978, uma reserva ecológica foi estabelecida para proteger parte dessa área do crescente impacto de ações antrópicas nos seus arredores. Os peixes tem sido muito pouco investigados nessa região. Baseado em coletas com vários amostradores durante vários anos (2001-2005), e em comparações com estudos prévios, esse trabalho fornece uma lista de espécies atualizada dos peixes ocorrendo no Taim. Também é apresentada a primeira descrição preliminar dos padrões de dominância nos principais lagos que compõem o sistema (Flores, Nicola, Jacaré e Mangueira). A análise comparada indicou a presença de 62 espécies de peixes distribuídas em 24 famílias, sendo Characidae (19 espécies) e Cichlidae (7) as famílias com o maior número de espécies. Seis espécies são registradas pela primeira vez na reserva: Trachelyopterus lucenai (Auchenipteridae), Hoplosternum littorale (Callichthyidae), Rineloricaria cadeae (Loricariidae), Eigenmannia trilineata (Sternopygidae), Odontesthes mirinensis e O. perugiae (Atherinopsidae). Aparentemente, o penharol T. lucenai invadiu o sistema na última década e tornou-se uma das espécies dominantes nas zonas pelágicas das lagoas. Embora diferenças nos amostradores não permitam comparações diretas, parecem ocorrer diferenças na composição de espécies e padrões de dominância entre as margens rasas e as zonas pelágicas dos lagos. Uma assembléia de peixes mais diversa, dominada por peixes pequenos ( 5cm) ocorrem nas margens vegetadas e protegidas dos lagos, enquanto uma assembléia menos diversa formada por peixes de maior tamanho (>15cm) parece dominar as zonas pelágicas.
