Chronic sleep restriction, common in today's 24/7 society, causes cumulative neurobehavioural impairment, but the dynamics of the build-up and dissipation of this impairment have not been fully elucidated. We addressed this knowledge gap in a laboratory study involving two, 5-day periods of sleep restriction to 4 hr per day, separated by a 1-day dose-response intervention sleep opportunity. We measured sleep physiological and waking neurobehavioural responses in 70 healthy adults, each randomized to one of seven dose-response intervention sleep doses ranging from 0 to 12 hr, or a non-sleep-restricted control group. As anticipated, sleep physiological markers showed homeostatic dynamics throughout the study, and waking neurobehavioural impairment accumulated across the two sleep restriction periods. Unexpectedly, there was only a slight and short-lived effect of the 1-day dose-response intervention sleep opportunity. Whether the dose-response intervention sleep opportunity involved extension, further restriction or total deprivation of sleep, neurobehavioural functioning during the subsequent second sleep restriction period was dominated by prior sleep-wake history. Our findings revealed a profound and enduring influence of long-term sleep-wake history as a fundamental aspect of the dynamic regulation of the neurobehavioural response to sleep loss.

The discrepancy in sleep timing between weekdays and weekends - social jetlag (SJL) - is known to negatively affect student quality of life (QOL). However, the association between social jetlag and physical/mental QOL among adolescents and the precise effect of social jetlag on depressive symptoms and daytime sleepiness remains unknown. This study investigated the longitudinal course, risk factors, and effects of social jetlag, a circadian misalignment, in a school-based cohort. The participants were 427 students (13.3 ± 0.6 years, 45.2% girls) from five junior high schools. We performed a baseline survey in 2019 and a 1-year follow-up survey in 2020. Depressive symptoms, QOL, and daytime sleepiness were assessed using the Birleson Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children, Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and Paediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale. In the baseline survey, 49.6% of the students reported SJL ≥1 h, and 17.1% reported SJL ≥2 h. Among them, 37.2% and 6.8% reported persistent SJL at follow-up, respectively. New incidences of SJL ≥1 h were associated with older age, non-attainment of menarche or voice changes, and longer duration of smartphone use, whereas its persistence was associated with a later chronotype. Persistence of SJL ≥1 h and ≥2 h predicted depressive symptoms and daytime sleepiness at follow-up, whereas new incidences of SJL ≥2 h predicted lower QOL. In conclusion, social jetlag has a persistent course, and daytime functioning can deteriorate as social jetlag becomes chronic. Our findings suggest the need for intensive interventions for social jetlag among adolescents.

While dietary intake has previously been related to various indices of poor sleep (e.g., short sleep duration, poor sleep quality), to date, few studies have examined chrononutrition from the perspectives of the relationship between dietary intake and social jet lag and temporal sleep variability. Moreover, recently it has been suggested that previous methods of measuring social jet lag have the potential to lead to large overestimations. Together, this precludes a clear understanding of the role of nutritional composition in the pathophysiology of poor sleep, via social jet lag and temporal sleep variability, or vice versa. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationships between nutrient intake and social jet lag (using a revised index, taking account of intention to sleep and sleep onset and offset difficulties), and temporal sleep variability. Using a cross-sectional survey, 657 healthy participants (mean age 26.7 ± 6.1 years), without sleep disorders, were recruited via an online platform and completed measures of weekly dietary intake, social jet lag, temporal sleep variability, stress/sleep reactivity and mood. Results showed limited associations between nutritional composition and social jet lag. However, levels of temporal sleep variability were predicted by consumption of polyunsaturated fats, sodium, chloride and total energy intake. The results suggest further examinations of specific nutrients are warranted in a first step to tailoring interventions to manage diet and temporal variabilities in sleep patterns.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate the Japanese version of the Restorative Sleep Questionnaire Weekly version (RSQ-W-J) and estimate the RSQ-W-J cut-off score to identify the degree of non-restorative sleep (NRS) that interferes with daytime function. METHODS: An online survey was conducted, and 513 participants (241 men, 272 women; mean age, 47.88 ± 16.66 years) completed the questionnaires. The RSQ-W-J, Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory, Athens Insomnia Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Sleep Debt Index, NRS and the degree of daytime dysfunction, and the diagnostic criteria for chronic insomnia were used as implementation scales. RESULTS: The RSQ-W-J was confirmed to have a single-factor structure. Both the Cronbach α coefficient and test-retest reliability of RSQ-W-J were high (α = 0.91; intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]agreement = 0.85). The RSQ-W-J was significantly negatively correlated with the scales of fatigue, insomnia, depressive symptoms, daytime sleepiness, and sleep debt. In addition, the RSQ-W-J scores of the insomnia group, in which participants met the diagnostic criteria for chronic insomnia, NRS group, in which participants had NRS only, and sleep debt group, in which participants had sleep debt, were significantly lower than those in the normal sleep group. Furthermore, the insomnia group scored significantly lower than the sleep debt group. The RSQ-W-J cut-off score, which indicates whether or not NRS interferes with daytime function, was estimated to be 45.8 points. CONCLUSIONS: The RSQ-W-J was shown to be useful for comprehensively measuring the degree of restorative sleep.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the association between SJLsc (sleep-corrected social jetlag) and depressive mood is significant and independent of sleep debt. METHODS: Participants from the general adult population were interviewed using structured questionnaires on sleep duration, weekday/weekend sleep schedules, and depressive mood (Patient Health Questionnaire-9). Social jetlag (SJL) was measured by SJLsc and standard SJL (SJLs). SJLs was the absolute difference between mid-sleep time on free days (MSF) and workdays (MSW). For SJLsc, both MSF and MSW were adjusted for average sleep duration across the week according to the direction of sleep debt. Sleep debt was defined by sleep extension on free days. The association of SJL with depression was investigated, and covariates included age, sex, sociodemographic factors, insomnia symptoms, sleep duration, and sleep debt. RESULTS: A total of 1982 individuals (1089 men; age 43.1 ± 14.4 years) were analyzed. SJL was present in 24.6% measured by SJLsc and 51.0% by SJLs. SJLsc and SJLs were significantly associated with depressive mood (r = 0.06, P = 0.02; r = 0.06, P = 0.01, respectively), independent of sleep debt. Sleep debt was also associated with depression (r = 0.07, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: By adopting sleep-corrected formula for SJL, this study found that misaligned and insufficient sleep, at levels occurring in routine social life, can negatively affect mood. Minimizing social jetlag and sleep deprivation may promote individual psychological well-being.

The Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ) was developed to determine an individual's chronotype, and it provides information about sleep and wake times separately for work and free days. However, the MCTQ has not been effectively verified using a large sample based on multiple questionnaires and actigraphy measures. Three sequential studies were conducted. Study 1 used a large sample (n = 1066) to investigate the chronotype of Chinese college freshmen and assess the validity of the MCTQ compared with the reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ), actigraphy, and other related questionnaires. Study 2 verified the MCTQ compared with a sleep diary. Study 3 examined the test-retest reliability of the MCTQ at the 2-year follow-up. The results showed that MCTQ parameters were significantly associated with rMEQ scores, the actigraphy-based mid-point of sleep, sleep quality, depression, and trait anxiety. In addition, all MCTQ variables were significantly related to the diary-based sleep mid-point. The test-retest reliability of the mid-point of sleep adjusted for sleep debt (MSFsc) and mid-point of sleep on free days (MSF) was acceptable. These results indicate that the MCTQ is a practical and efficient tool with good reliability. Its further development is important for the accurate assessment of chronotypes and clinical diagnoses of sleep.

Sleep plays an important role in the formative developmental processes occurring during the teenage years. At the same time, teenagers' changing bioregulatory mechanisms and psychosocial factors converge into the so-called social jetlag, a sleep timing misalignment between weekdays and weekends. The aim of this study was to quantify the course of day-to-day changes in sleep/wake patterns and sleep stage distributions, and the sex differences in social jetlag among teenagers. We observed the sleep of 156 teenagers (58.3% girls, 15-16 years) using a novel sleep monitor over the course of up to 10 consecutive days. 1323 nights of data were analyzed using multilevel modeling. On average, participants went to bed at 23:41, woke up at 07:48, slept for 7.7 h and had 85.5% sleep efficiency. Sleep stage distributions were in line with normative data. We found later sleep onset and offset, longer time in bed, sleep duration, and sleep onset latency (p = .001), greater proportion of light sleep and lower proportion of deep sleep, and poorer sleep efficiency (all p < .001) on weekend nights starting on Friday and Saturday. On Friday nights, girls had longer time awake after sleep onset (p = .020) than boys. On Friday and Saturday nights, girls fell asleep earlier (p < .001 and p = .006, respectively). On Saturday nights, girls had shorter sleep latency (p = .024), and better sleep efficiency (p = .019) than boys. In sum, teenagers' sleep patterns reflected healthy, albeit somewhat short sleep. There was convincing evidence of social jetlag, and girls exhibited less severe social jetlag than boys.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Prospectively examine the association between sleep restriction, perceived sleep quality (PSQ) and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). METHODS: In 1318 military recruits (68% males) self-reported sleep was assessed at the beginning and end of a 12-week training course. Sleep restriction was defined as an individualized reduction in sleep duration of ≥2 hours/night compared with civilian life. URTIs were retrieved from medical records. RESULTS: On commencing training, approximately half of recruits were sleep restricted (52%; 2.1 ± 1.6 h); despite the sleep debt, 58% of recruits with sleep restriction reported good PSQ. Regression adjusted for covariates showed that recruits commencing training with sleep restriction were more likely to suffer URTI during the course (OR = 2.93, 95% CI 1.29-6.69, p = .011). Moderation analysis showed this finding was driven by poor PSQ (B = -1.12, SE 0.50, p = .023), as no significant association between sleep restriction and URTI was observed in recruits reporting good PSQ, despite a similar magnitude of sleep restriction during training. Associations remained in the population completing training, accounting for loss to follow-up. Recruits reporting poor PSQ when healthy at the start and end of training were more susceptible to URTI (OR = 3.16, 95% CI 1.31-7.61, p = .010, vs good PSQ). CONCLUSION: Good perceived sleep quality was associated with protection against the raised risk of respiratory infection during sleep restriction. Studies should determine whether improvements in sleep quality arising from behavioral sleep interventions translate to reduced respiratory infection during sleep restriction.

Sleep debt (SD) is one of the important triggers for causing not only physiological and mental illness but also dangerous work. Therefore, achieving an early and objective assessment of SD is of great significance in the precaution against SD-related diseases and unsafe work. Here, an ultrasensitive electrochemical immunosensor was constructed for analysis of SD biomarker amyloid-ß (Aß). The gold nanoparticles/chitosan-coated polyaniline-functionalized activated carbon (AuNPs/AC@PANI@CS) composites were employed as the sensing platforms. Since PANI and AC can form an effective conductive path, it can effectively enhance the penetration of electrolytes on the electrode surface and the rapid transport of charges and ions, significantly enhancing the electrochemical response signal of the immunosensor. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the fabricated immunosensor had a wide linear range of 1.95 pg mL-1 to 1000.00 pg mL-1, with a low detection limit of 0.014 pg mL-1. This study not only provides an effective method for the accurate and rapid detection of Aß, but also offers a novel evaluation strategy for the objective assessment of SD and the study of related pathological mechanisms.

Health effects of weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) could differ depending on both the ability to obtain sufficient sleep during weekdays and amount of weekend CUS required to compensate for sleep lost during the week. Using data from 3128 middle-aged (40-64 years) participants of the Sleep Heart Health Study, we examined the longitudinal association of these two aspects of sleep with all-cause mortality. CUS was calculated as the difference in self-reported habitual sleep duration between weekends and weekdays, and classified into no, short (1 h), and long (2 h or more) CUS. Polysomnography-measured total sleep time, representing the ability to obtain sufficient sleep, was classified into short (< 360 min) or normal (≥ 360 min) sleep durations. We estimated multivariable-adjusted mortality hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for six groups divided by the extent of CUS and sleep duration. Participants were followed up for a median (interquartile range) of 12.3 (11.3-13.5) years. Short weekend CUS with normal sleep duration was associated with lower mortality compared to no CUS with normal sleep duration (HR, 0.48; 95% CI 0.27-0.83). When stricter cutoffs were applied for sleep durations, while the protective effect of short CUS with normal sleep duration (≥ 390 min) was strengthened (HR, 0.36; 95% CI 0.17-0.78), the harmful effect of short CUS with short sleep duration (< 330 min) emerged (HR, 1.84; 95% CI 1.08-3.14). Results highlight the importance of balancing sleep ability and CUS. Sufficient sleep may reduce weekday sleep debt and only a short CUS would be required on weekends, improving mortality in middle-aged adults. Determining whether weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) is related to high risk of depression in the general middle-aged population in Korea. This study is a cross-sectional study analyzing data from 2016 to 2017 collected in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VII-1, 2; less than 35 years, and more than 65 years were excluded. Interviews on sociodemographic characteristics, mood and sleep-related profiles, and comorbid medical conditions were conducted. Participants were divided into three groups according to weekday sleeping time (< 6 h, 6 to ≤ 8 h, and ≥ 8 h). Weekend CUS was identified when nocturnal sleep extension occurred over the weekend. The risk of depression was evaluated using the PHQ-9. The PHQ-9 score differed among the three groups. The prevalence of moderate to severe depressive symptom and PHQ-9 score ≥ 10 was the highest in the group sleep over 8 h and the next highest in the group sleep less than 6 h. In the group sleep less than 6 h, PHQ-9 score ≥ 10 was significantly higher in the without CUS group than the with CUS group. The risk of depression in middle-aged individuals was associated with both short and long sleep duration, and the severity and prevalence of depression were lower in the group with CUS when a shortened sleep pattern was observed. Objectives: We aimed to examine the effects of circadian and sleep rhythm disruptions on immune biomarkers among hospital healthcare professionals working night shifts and rotating day shifts. Methods: Hospital nurses working either as permanent night shifters (n=95) or as day shifters rotating between morning and afternoon shifts (n=96) kept a daily diary on their sleep and work schedules over a full working week. Blood samples were collected at the beginning and end of the last shift during the week, and participants were categorized into three groups based on work shift: morning shift (39 day shifters sampled at 7:00 and 14:00), afternoon shift (57 day shifters sampled at 14:00 and 21:00), and night shift (95 night shifters sampled at 21:00 and 7:00). Circulating blood counts in immune cells, interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein concentrations as well as total sleep time per 24 hours during work days (TST24w) and free days (TST24f), sleep debt (TST24f - TST24w) and social jet-lag (a behavioral proxy of circadian misalignment) were assessed. Results: Compared with day shifters, night shifters had shorter sleep duration (TST24w=5.4 ± 1.4h), greater sleep debt (3.2 ± 1.4 h) and social jet-lag (6.7 ± 2.4 h). Variations of immune biomarkers concentrations were consistent with the expected diurnal variations among day shifters (i.e., low level in the morning, increase during the day, peak value in the evening). By contrast, in night shifters, blood concentrations of total lymphocytes, T-helper cells, cytotoxic T-cells, memory B-cells and interleukin-6 were lower at 21:00, increased during the night, and reached higher values at 7:00. Multivariate analyses ruled out significant impact of TST24w, sleep debt, and social jet-lag on immune biomarkers concentrations among day shifters. In contrast, among night shifters, multivariate analyses indicated a combined effect of total sleep time (TST24w), sleep debt and social jet-lag for total lymphocytes and T-helper cells but only a social jet-lag effect for interleukin-6 and a single total sleep time effect for neutrophil and B-Cells. Conclusions: Altogether, our results point to intricate response patterns of immune rhythms to circadian misalignment and sleep debt in night shifters. Specifically, these altered pattern expressions of immune cells may increase vulnerability to infections and reduce vaccination efficiency in night workers.

Background: COVID-19-related anxiety, sleep problems, and loneliness may be risk factors for school refusal in children and adolescents. However, few studies have examined the mechanisms by which these risk factors cause school refusal. This study examined the process by which COVID-19-related anxiety, sleep problems, and loneliness cause school refusal, using structural equation modeling. Methods: In this cross-sectional questionnaire-based study, 256 (109 male, 147 female, mean age: 15.37 ± 0.48 years) senior high school students were asked to complete the Stress and Anxiety associated with Viral Epidemics-6 questionnaire to assess COVID-19-related anxiety, the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), Sleep Debt Index (SDI), and chronotype (MSFsc) to assess sleep problems, the Three-Item Loneliness Scale (TILS) to assess loneliness, and Feelings of School-Avoidance Scale (FSAS) to assess school refusal. Results: Structural equation modeling showed that sleep problems affected loneliness (ß = 0.52) and feelings of school refusal (ß = 0.37), and that loneliness affected feelings of school refusal (ß = 0.47). There was no significant pathway of COVID-19-related anxiety on sleep problems, loneliness, or feelings of school refusal. The indirect effect of sleep problems on feelings of school refusal through loneliness was significant. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that AIS (ß = 0.30) and SDI (ß = 0.13) scores were associated with TILS, and AIS (ß = 0.26) and MSFsc (ß = -0.14) scores were associated with FSAS scores. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that sleep problems affected feelings of school refusal via both direct and indirect pathways through the exacerbation of loneliness. To prevent school refusal in adolescents, addressing the indirect pathway via loneliness could be effective in improving insomnia and sleep debt, while addressing the direct pathway could be effective in improving insomnia and chronotype.

BACKGROUND: Presenteeism is an indicator of productivity loss and the risk of absence from work due to mental health problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of sleep debt, social jetlag, and insomnia symptoms on presenteeism and psychological distress. METHODS: The participants were 351 Japanese workers (271 males, 79 females, and one of other gender, with a mean age of 49 ± 9.49 years). The eligibility criteria for this study were full-time employment, working eight hours per day, five days per week, and no night shifts. The participants answered questionnaires measuring sleep debt, social jetlag, insomnia symptoms, presenteeism, and psychological distress. RESULTS: Insomnia symptoms had the greatest impact on presenteeism and psychological distress when compared with sleep debt and social jetlag (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 5.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.88-10.91; adjusted OR = 7.29, 95%CI = 3.06-17.35). Sleep debt had a greater impact on presenteeism and psychological distress than did social jetlag (adjusted OR = 1.61, 95%CI = 1.14-2.27; adjusted OR = 1.68, 95%CI = 1.11-2.54), which had no impact on these variables (adjusted OR = 1.04, 95%CI = 0.91-1.20; adjusted OR = 0.96, 95%CI = 0.76-1.22). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicated that insomnia symptoms had a more significant impact on presenteeism and psychological distress than social jetlag and sleep debt. Although sleep debt might have an independent impact on presenteeism and psychological distress, social jetlag did not.

Background: Higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) maybe association with children's sleep pattern. However, few studies have considered this association in Asia, especially in school children. This study investigated the relationship between children's consumption frequency of such beverages and their sleep duration. Methods: Participants aged 6-12 years were analyzed from two survey data in 2012 and 2013-2016 Nutrition and Health Surveys in Taiwan. A total of 2,628 participants were included in the analysis (2012, N = 1,267; 2013-2016, N = 1,361). Beverages weekly consumption were divided into low and high intake groups by medians cut-off points. The sleep variables were the sleep duration at night (including school days and weekends) and sleep debt. After controlling the confounders, the correlation between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and sleep duration was examined using multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: The students slept for an average of 8.8 h on school days and 9.7 h on weekends. Relative to the low SSB intake group, the high intake group exhibited shorter sleep durations on school days (P < 0.001), greater sleep debt (P = 0.049). In logistic regression, high intake group were more likely to sleep for <8.5 h on school days (OR = 1.67, P = 0.002) and exhibit >2 h of sleep debt than low intake group (OR = 1.41, P = 0.022). Conclusions: Children who had consumed sugar-sweetened beverages frequently slept for shorter durations at night on school days and exhibited greater sleep debt. The causal relationship was not clear. Nonetheless, these two factors are important in promoting children health.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The relationship between napping and cognition remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between napping and cognition according to sleep debt in the Korean adult population. METHODS: A population-based nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2018. A two-stage stratified random sample of Koreans aged ≥19 years was selected and evaluated using questionnaires by trained interviewers. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mail-In Cognitive Function Screening Instrument (MCFSI). Sleep habits on weekdays and weekends, napping, and subjective sleep requirements were assessed using the questionnaires. Accumulated sleep debt was calculated by subtracting the weekly average sleep duration from subjective sleep requirements. Sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, insomnia, depression, demographics, and comorbidities were assessed. Participants were grouped into those with sleep debt ≤60 min and those with sleep debt >60 min. Multiple linear regression was used to estimate the independent association between the factors and cognition. RESULTS: In total, 2,501 participants were included in the analysis. Naps were reported in 726 (29.0%) participants (nappers). The mean MCFSI score was higher in nappers (3.4±3.6) than in non-nappers (2.3±3.0) (p<0.001). Multiple linear regression controlling for age, alcohol, smoking, depression, insomnia, daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, and education revealed that 30 to 60 min of napping was associated with worse cognitive function in participants with sleep debts ≤60 min, while >60 min of napping was associated with better cognitive function in participants with sleep debts >60 min. CONCLUSIONS: In general, naps are associated with worse cognitive function in the Korean adult population. However, for those with sleep debt of >60 min, naps for >60 min were associated with better cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: Literature documenting the in-hospital cardiovascular outcomes of sleep deprivation (SD) patients is scarce. We aimed to compare inpatient cardiovascular outcomes in patients with sleep deprivation and those without sleep deprivation. METHOD: We queried the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2016 to 2019 to conduct a retrospective observational study. Using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes, we identified patients with sleep deprivation (SD) diagnosis and compared them to their counterparts without sleep deprivation (NSD). The cardiovascular outcomes of interest were hypertensive heart disease (HHD), atrial fibrillation (AF), and ST-segment and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI and NSTEMI, respectively). We used multivariable regression analysis to unearth the relationship between sleep deprivation and cardiovascular disease. RESULTS: There were 28,484,087 patients admitted during the study period, among which 2.1% (6,08,059) with a mean age of 59 (sd=19) years had a sleep deprivation diagnosis unrelated to medical or psychiatric illness. Of these, 75.7% were Caucasians, 11.5% were Blacks, and 8% were Hispanics. Individuals with sleep deprivation had a higher odds ratio (OR) of HHD, i.e., OR=1.3 (1.29-1.31), p<0.0001. The odds of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) was 0.9 (0.9-1.92), p=0.45; heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) was 0.98 (0.97-1.01), p=0.31; and the odds of the SD population for AF was 0.9 (0.89-1.03), p=0.11. CONCLUSION: Sleep deprivation seems to be more prevalent in the Caucasian population. Individuals with sleep deprivation have a higher risk of hypertensive heart disease but similar outcomes to the general population in terms of AF, HFrEF, and HFpEF.

BACKGROUND: Experimental studies have shown that just 1 night of sleep loss impairs next-day performance, mood, and energy. Yet, little is known about the effects of consecutive sleep loss on daily well-being in participants' own settings. PURPOSE: This study examined whether and how naturally occurring consecutive sleep loss is associated with day-to-day trajectories of affective and physical well-being. METHODS: Participants were adults (N = 1,958) from the Midlife in the United States Study who provided daily diary data for eight consecutive days. Consecutive sleep loss was operationalized as the within-person number of consecutive nights with <6 hr of sleep. Multilevel models evaluated the linear, quadratic, and cubic effects of consecutive sleep loss on daily well-being, after controlling for sociodemographic, health, and daily covariates. RESULTS: Daily negative affect increased and positive affect decreased in curvilinear fashion as the number of consecutive sleep loss increased. For example, daily negative affect increased (linear), but the rate of increase decelerated as the number of consecutive sleep loss increased (quadratic). Results were consistent for the number and severity of physical symptoms. For negative affect and the severity of physical symptoms, cubic effect was also significant such that the rate of increase accelerated again in the days most distal to baseline (no sleep loss). CONCLUSIONS: Consecutive sleep loss was associated with degraded trajectories of daily affective and physical well-being. Making efforts to break the vicious cycle of sleep loss may protect daily well-being in adults whose sleep time is often compromised.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To describe trajectories of daily perceived sleep need and sleep debt, and examine if cumulative perceived sleep debt predicts next-day affect. METHODS: Daily sleep and affect were measured over two school weeks and two vacation weeks (N = 205, 54.1% females, M ± SDage = 16.9 ± 0.87 years). Each day, participants wore actigraphs and self-reported the amount of sleep needed to function well the next day (i.e. perceived sleep need), sleep duration, and high- and low-arousal positive and negative affect (PA, NA). Cumulative perceived sleep debt was calculated as the weighted average of the difference between perceived sleep need and sleep duration over the past 3 days. Cross-lagged, multilevel models were used to test cumulative sleep debt as a predictor of next-day affect. Lagged affect, day of the week, study day, and sociodemographics were controlled. RESULTS: Perceived sleep need was lower early in the school week, before increasing in the second half of the week. Adolescents accumulated perceived sleep debt across school days and reduced it during weekends. On weekends and vacations, adolescents self-reported meeting their sleep need, sleeping the amount, or more than the amount of sleep they perceived as needing. Higher cumulative actigraphy sleep debt predicted higher next-day high arousal NA; higher cumulative diary sleep debt predicted higher NA (regardless of arousal), and lower low arousal PA the following day. CONCLUSION: Adolescents experienced sustained, cumulative perceived sleep debt across school days. Weekends and vacations appeared to be opportunities for reducing sleep debt. Trajectories of sleep debt during vacation suggested recovery from school-related sleep restriction. Cumulative sleep debt was related to affect on a daily basis, highlighting the value of this measure for future research and interventions.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between differences in weekday-to-weekend sleep habits and stress responses in a working population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from university workers on sleep habits, differences in sleep duration between weekdays and weekends, and each midpoint of the sleep phase on weekdays and weekends. Social jetlag was defined as the difference in the midpoint of the sleep phase between weekdays and weekends. In addition, the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire assessed stress responses and stress-related factors. To examine sleep-related factors affecting stress responses, regression analysis was performed with adjustments for age, sex, and stress-related factors. RESULTS: Analyzed were 2,739 participants. Sleep duration differences obtained by subtracting sleep duration on weekdays from that on weekends, social jetlag, and weekday sleep duration were significantly associated with an increased risk of stress responses in a univariate linear regression model. Adjusting for age, sex, job stressors, and stressor buffering factors did not change this trend. However, when additionally adjusting for all sleep parameters, only sleep duration differences and weekday sleep duration were significantly associated with stress responses (ß 0.67 [95% CI 0.24, 1.10], p = 0.002), (-0.66 [-1.20, -0.13], p = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS: This study provided further evidence that weekday sleep duration and weekday-to-weekend sleep duration differences were independently associated with stress responses even when considering stress-related factors. However, social jetlag was not clearly associated with stress responses. Our findings highlighted the necessity of securing sufficient sleep for stress management and mental health promotion in a working population.
