RESUMEN

Monolithic catalysts with excellent O3 catalytic decomposition performance were prepared by in situ loading of Co-doped KMn8O16 on the surface of nickel foam. The triple-layer structure with Co-doped KMn8O16/Ni6MnO8/Ni foam was grown spontaneously on the surface of nickel foam by tuning the molar ratio of KMnO4 to Co(NO3)2·6H2O precursors. Importantly, the formed Ni6MnO8 structure between KMn8O16 and nickel foam during in situ synthesis process effectively protected nickel foam from further etching, which significantly enhanced the reaction stability of catalyst. The optimum amount of Co doping in KMn8O16 was available when the molar ratio of Mn to Co species in the precursor solution was 2:1. And the Mn2Co1 catalyst had abundant oxygen vacancies and excellent hydrophobicity, thus creating outstanding O3 decomposition activity. The O3 conversion under dry conditions and relative humidity of 65%, 90% over a period of 5 hr was 100%, 94% and 80% with the space velocity of 28,000 hr-1, respectively. The in situ constructed Co-doped KMn8O16/Ni foam catalyst showed the advantages of low price and gradual applicability of the preparation process, which provided an opportunity for the design of monolithic catalyst for O3 catalytic decomposition.

RESUMEN

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) linked to atherosclerosis remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerosis is primarily caused by the accumulation of oxidized forms of low density lipoprotein (LDL) in macrophages (MΦs) in the subendothelial layer of arteries leading to foam cell and fatty streak formation. Many studies suggest that LDL that is modified by myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a key player in the development of atherosclerosis. MΦs can adopt a variety of functional phenotypes that include mainly the proinflammatory M1 and the anti-inflammatory M2 MΦ phenotypes which are both implicated in the process of atherogenesis. In fact, MΦs that reside in atherosclerostic lesions were shown to express a variety of phenotypes ranging between the M1- and M2 MΦ types. Recently, we pointed out the involvement of MPO oxidized-LDL (Mox-LDL) in increasing inflammation in MΦs by reducing their secretion of IL-10. Since little is known about Mox-LDL-mediated pro-atherosclerostic responses in MΦs, our study aimed at analyzing the in vitro effects of Mox-LDL at this level through making use of the well-established model of human THP-1-derived Mφs. Our results demonstrate that Mox-LDL has no effect on apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and cell death in our cell model; yet, interestingly, our results show that Mox-LDL is significantly engulfed at a higher rate in the different MΦ subtypes supporting its key role in foam cell formation during the progression of the disease as well as previous data that were generated using another primary MΦ cell model of atherosclerosis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic rubber band ligation (ERBL) is a nonsurgical technique for the treatment of symptomatic internal hemorrhoids but is limited by recurrence and post-procedural pain. AIM: To evaluate satisfaction, long-term recurrence, and post-procedural pain in managing internal hemorrhoids using a combination of polidocanol foam sclerotherapy and ERBL. METHODS: This was a prospective, multicenter, randomized study. A total of 195 consecutive patients diagnosed with grade II-III internal hemorrhoids were enrolled from four tertiary hospitals and randomly divided into a cap-assisted endoscopic polidocanol foam sclerobanding (EFSB) or an ERBL group. All patients were followed-up for 12 months. Symptom-based severity and post-procedural pain were assessed using a hemorrhoid severity score (HSS) and a visual analog scale (VAS). Continuous variables were reported as medians and interquartile range. RESULTS: One hundred and ninety-five patients were enrolled, with 98 in the EFSB group. HSS was lower in the EFSB group than in the ERBL group at 8 weeks [4.0 (3.0-5.0) vs 5.0 (4.0-6.0), P = 0.003] and 12-month [2.0 (1.0-3.0) vs 3.0 (2.0-3.0), P < 0.001] of follow-up. The prolapse recurrence rate was lower in the EFSB group at 12 months (11.2% vs 21.6%, P = 0.038). Multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that EFSB treatment [B = -0.915, 95% confidence interval (CI): -1.301 to -0.530, P = 0.001] and rubber band number (B = 0.843, 95%CI: 0.595-1.092, P < 0.001) were negatively and independently associated with the VAS score 24 hours post-procedure. The median VAS was lower in the EFSB group than in the ERBL [2.0 (1.0-3.0) vs 3.0 (2.0-4.0), P < 0.001]. CONCLUSION: Cap-assisted EFSB provided long-term satisfaction and effective relief from the recurrence of prolapse and pain 24 hours post-procedure.

RESUMEN

HYPOTHESIS: Nanoparticle-stabilized foams are extremely stable, and flame retardant inorganic nanoparticles should be able to add sealing capacity of firefighting foams on flammable liquid fuels, and hence enhance fire extinguishment performance on liquid fuel fire. In practice, how do flame retardant nanoparticles resist the destructive effect of oil molecules on foam and tune foam properties? EXPERIMENTS: We have prepared a nanoparticle-enhanced foam comprising of hydrocarbon surfactant, short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant, and nanoparticles. The interactions among nanoparticles and surfactant molecules were characterized by using dynamic surface tension and conductivity. Stability, rheology, and oil resistivity on liquid fuel of the nanoparticle-enhanced foam were evaluated systematically. Fire suppression effectiveness of the foams was verified based on a standard experiment. FINDINGS: Foam stability and oil resistivity were enhanced due to self-assembled network structures formed by jammed aggregates composed by nanoparticles and surfactants in Plateau borders and bubble films, providing structural recoverability and enhanced viscoelasticity within foam. Foams containing nano-SiO2, nano-CaCO3, nano-Al(OH)3, and nano-Mg(OH)2 show difference in fire extinguishment due to different ability to enhance foam properties. Foam containing nano-Al(OH)3 shows the strongest adaptation and could shorten fire extinguishing time by 2 times and prolong burn-back time by 2.3 times compared with commercial product.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Sphincter-preserving techniques like autologous compound platelet-rich fibrin foam have gained popularity, offering potential for better functional outcomes in anal fistula treatment. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Obsidian RFT®. METHODS: The study conducted a retrospective analysis from January 2018 to December 2022 on patients who received anal fistula closure with Obsidian RTF® at the Department of General Surgery, Medical University of Vienna. Clinical diagnosis, complemented by radiographic imaging, was employed to confirm inconclusive cases. Demographic and fistula characteristics and postoperative data were collected from electronic records following STROCSS criteria. RESULTS: Fifteen patients received Obsidian RFT® treatment for anal fistulas. We found no intra- and postoperative complications. The median hospital stay was 3 days. After a median follow-up of 32 months, a closure rate of 53.3% was detected. Non-significant differences were observed in various variables, yet trends emerged, indicating associations between abscess presence and non-healing fistulas. A distinct age threshold (≥ 42.7 years) served as an indicator for an inability to achieve anal fistula cure. CONCLUSION: Obsidian RFT® represents a safe, minimally invasive operative procedure. Approximately half the patients experienced healing, with better outcome in a younger population. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Ethical Approval number Medical University of Vienna (#1258/2018). This study was registered retrospectively in ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT06136325).

RESUMEN

Water and foam have different fire-extinguishing mechanisms. Traditional foam and compressed air foam (CAF) have different bubble structures. These differences result in different thermal characteristics, which affect the extinguishing abilities during a fire. In this study, the differences in the thermal characteristics of three different extinguishing agents (water, traditional foam, and CAF) were investigated by suppressing a compartment fire. With an ignition source in the compartment (6 m × 3 m × 3 m), the agent was preferentially applied to the outside wall of the compartment. The effects of internal cooling and burnback resistance generated from the outer wall were evaluated. The performance of each agent in shielding firefighters from radiant heat while suppressing the fire inside the compartment was evaluated. When the outside wall of the compartment was covered with each of the agents, all agents were found to reduce the room temperature. When CAF was applied, the delay time until temperature re-rise was approximately 1.76-4.5 times longer than that when water was used. In addition, foaming agents exhibited a higher heat-shielding effect than water during the initial suppression. Thus, considering the thermal characteristics of these agents, fire suppression can be more effective if foam agents are used.

RESUMEN

The modern era of running shoes began in the 1960s with the introduction of simple polymer midsole foams, and it ended in the late 2010s with the introduction of advanced footwear technology (AFT). AFT is characterized by highly compliant, resilient, and lightweight foams with embedded, rigid, longitudinal architecture. This footwear complex improves a runner's efficiency, and it introduced a step change in running performance. Purpose: This review serves to examine the current state of knowledge around AFT-what it is and what we know about its ingredients, what benefits it confers to runners, and what may or may not mediate that benefit. We also discuss the emerging science around AFT being introduced to track-racing spikes and how it is currently regulated in sporting contexts. Conclusions: AFT has changed running as a sport. The construction of AFT is grossly understood, but the nature of the interacting elements is not. The magnitude of the enhancement of a runner's economy and performance has been characterized and modeled, but the nuanced factors that mediate those responses have not. With these knowns and unknowns, we conclude the review by providing a collection of best practices for footwear researchers, advice for runners interested in AFT, and a list of pertinent items for further investigation.

RESUMEN

Implant subsidence into the underlying trabecular bone is a common problem in orthopaedic surgeries; however, the ability to pre-operatively predict implant subsidence remains limited. Current state-of-the-art computational models for predicting subsidence have issues addressing this clinical problem, often resulting from the size and complexity of existing subject-specific, image-based finite element (FE) models. The current study aimed to develop a simplified approach to FE modeling of subject-specific trabecular bone indentation resulting from implant penetration. Confined indentation experiments of human trabecular bone with flat- and sharp-tip indenters were simulated using FE analysis. A generalized continuum-level approach using a meshless smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) approach and an isotropic crushable foam (CF) material model was developed for the trabecular bone specimens. Five FE models were generated with CF material parameters calibrated to cadaveric specimens spanning a range of bone mineral densities (BMD). Additionally, an alternative model configuration was developed that included consideration of bone marrow, with bone and marrow material parameters assigned to elements randomly according to bone volume (BV%) measurements of experimental specimens, owing to the non-uniform nature of trabecular bone tissue microstructure. Statistical analysis found significant correlation between the shapes of the numerical and experimental force-displacement curves. FE models accurately captured the bone densification patterns observed experimentally. Inclusion of marrow elements offered improved response prediction of the flat-tip indenter tests. Ultimately, the developed approach demonstrates the ability of a generalizable continuum-level SPH approach to capture bone variability using clinical bone imaging metrics without needing detailed image-based geometries, a significant step towards simplified subject-specific modeling of implant subsidence.

RESUMEN

Pickering foams have great potential for applications in aerated foods, but their foaming ability and physical stability are still far from satisfactory. Herein, solid lipid particles (SLNs) were fabricated by using diacylglycerol of varying acyl chain lengths with modification by a protein. The SLNs showed different crystal polymorphisms and air-water interfacial activity. C14-DAG SLN with a contact angle ∼ 79° formed aqueous foam with supreme stability and high plasticity. Whey protein isolate and sodium caseinate (0.1 wt %) considerably enhanced the foamability and interfacial activity of SLNs and promoted the packing of particles at the bubble surface. However, high protein concentration caused foam destruction due to the competitive adsorption effect. ß-sheet increased in protein after adsorption and changed the polymorphism and thermodynamic properties of SLN. The foam collapsing behaviors varied in the presence of protein. The results gave insights into fabricating ultrastable aqueous foams by using high-melting DAG particles. The obtained foams demonstrated good temperature sensitivity and plasticity, which showed promising application prospects in the food and cosmetic fields.

RESUMEN

The development of efficient and stable catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in seawater presents a major challenge for hydrogen production through water electrolysis. In this work, we present a stable NiFe foam catalyst with a Se-doped Ni/Fe oxide surface prepared through a combination of chemical vapor deposition and electrochemical exfoliation. This method effectively modifies the surface of the commercial NiFe foam to a rough and stable Se-doped Ni/Fe oxide surface, displaying exceptional OER performance in both freshwater and seawater with more than 54 days stability in natural seawater. Characterizations reveal Ni-Se doped Fe oxide surface, with subsurface layers consisting of Ni alloyed with a moderate concentration of Fe, optimizes the adsorption free energy of oxygen-containing intermediates. Our results demonstrate a surface engineering approach to activate NiFe foam as a robust OER catalyst for seawater electrolysis, which is beneficial for the hydrogen economy and for the environment.

RESUMEN

The liquid metal dealloying (LMD) process enables the fabrication of porous metals with various chemical compositions. Despite its advantages, LMD still faces key challenges such as maintaining the high-temperature molten metal bath for a prolonged time, avoiding the use of toxic etchants, and so on. To overcome these challenges, the study develops a water-leachable and oxidation-resistant alloy melt (AM) in Ca-Mg binary system. Specifically, Ca72Mg28 eutectic AM is designed, which exhibits higher oxidation resistance and lower melting temperature compared to pure Mg, allowing LMD to be conducted in atmospheric conditions as well as temperatures >200 K lower. The AM also enables an innovative process to fabricate Ti foams with a hexagonal faceted surface structure by carefully manipulating the etching rate during the water etching process. This approach allows for the creation of foam with a surface area over 13% larger than that of foams with smooth surfaces via normal acid etching, potentially enhancing efficiency in applications such as electrodes for electrochemical systems or biomedical materials where increased cell adhesion can be beneficial. This study paves the way for efficiently manipulating the LMD process to fabricate metal foams with customized compositions and enhanced surface properties.

RESUMEN

The ability of right-angled synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) was explored to analyse the bacterial load in water treated with green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coated polyurethane foam (PUF). Gram negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria cultured in nutrient broth were diluted in autoclaved water containing NPs-coated PUF. The survival rate of S. aureus and E. coli lowered after ten minutes as compared to P. aeruginosa; however, after thirty minutes, the percentage viability dropped and recorded as 3.4%, 0.9%, and 0.1% for E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus respectively in the treated suspensions. No spectral change was observed in the fluorescence emission from the positive control and treated bacterial suspension owing to the masking effect of the emission from nutrient broth. In parallel, SF spectra recorded for directly picked bacterial colony dissolved in water showed remarkable drop in tryptophan emission after treatment with NPs-coated PUF. The SF data changes were assisted by hierarchical cluster analysis, which also made it possible to distinguish between positive control and treated bacterial suspensions. SFS has shown to be a reliable substitute for the culture plate approach for the quick identification of bacterial contamination in water.

RESUMEN

Development of low-cost and reliable reactors demanding minimal supervision is a need-of-the-hour for sewage treatment in rural areas. This study explores the performance of a multi-stage sponge-filled trickling filter (SPTF) for sewage treatment, employing polyethylene (PE) and polyurethane (PU) media. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrogen transformation were evaluated at hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) ranging from 2 to 6 m/d using synthetic sewage as influent. At influent COD of ∼350 mg/L, PU-SPTF and PE-SPTF achieved a COD removal of 97% across all HLRs with most of the removal occurring in the first segments. Operation of PE-SPTF at an HLR of 6 m/d caused substantial wash-out of biomass, while PU-SPTF retained biomass and achieved effluent COD < 10 mg/L even at HLR of 8-10 m/d. The maximum Total Nitrogen removal by PE-SPTF and PU-SPTF reactors was 93.56 ± 1.36 and 92.24 ± 0.66%, respectively, at an HLR of 6 m/d. Simultaneous removal of ammonia and nitrate was observed at all the HLRs in the first segment of both SPTFs indicating ANAMMOX activity. COD removal data, media depth, and HLRs were fitted (R2 > 0.99) to a first-order kinetic relationship. For a comparable COD removal, CO2 emission by PU-SPTF was 3.5% of that of an activated sludge system.

RESUMEN

Beta-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) scaffolds manufactured through the foam replication method are widely employed in bone tissue regeneration. The mechanical strength of these scaffolds is a significant challenge, partly due to the rheological properties of the original suspension. Various strategies have been explored to enhance the mechanical properties. In this research, ß-TCP scaffolds containing varying concentrations (0.25-1.00 wt%) of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were developed. The findings indicate that the addition of MWCNTs led to a concentration-dependent improvement in the viscosity of ß-TCP suspensions. All the prepared slurries exhibited viscoelastic behavior, with the storage modulus surpassing the loss modulus. The three time interval tests revealed that MWCNT-incorporated ß-TCP suspensions exhibited faster structural recovery compared to pure ß-TCP slurries. Introducing MWCNT modified compressive strength, and the optimal improvement was obtained using 0.75 wt% MWCNT. The in vitro degradation of ß-TCP was also reduced by incorporating MWCNT. While the inclusion of carbon nanotubes had a marginal negative impact on the viability and attachment of MC3T3-E1 cells, the number of viable cells remained above 70% of the control group. Additionally, the results demonstrated that the scaffold increased the expression level of osteocalcin, osteoponthin, and alkaline phosphatase genes of adiposed-derived stem cells; however, higher levels of gene expersion were obtained by using MWCNT. The suitability of MWCNT-modified ß-TCP suspensions for the foam replication method can be assessed by evaluating their rheological behavior, aiding in determining the critical additive concentration necessary for a successful coating process.

RESUMEN

The selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics plays an essential role in the chemical industry for the synthesis of anilines and their derivatives, which are known as crucial fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of Pd/Ti monolith catalyst containing well-isolated metallic Pd sites on Ti substrate through a simple impregnation method, showing remarkable catalytic properties in the selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics containing various functional groups. Kinetic analyses reveal an apparent activation energy of 61 kJ/mol and the kinetic isotope effect (KH2/KD2) of ~1.7 in the hydrogenation of 3-chloronitrobenzene over Pd/Ti-200 ppm catalyst, indicating the facile dissociation of dihydrogen and the subsequent efficient hydrogenation. The Pd/Ti-200 ppm catalyst also demonstrates good stability and recyclability, maintaining its performance over multiple cycles. This simple but innovative approach not only enhances the efficiency of Pd catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics but also offers significant potential for industrial applications in aniline production.

RESUMEN

Microalgal-bacterial consortia (MBC) and microalgal consortia (MC) were cultivated with primary and final treated wastewaters, respectively, using a fluidised carrier. This study determines the main factors and operations required for flocculating suspended MBC (SMBC) and MC (SMC) in cultures. The flocculated SMBC and SMC with good settleability require the detachment of thickened MBC or MC on the carrier and suppressed SMBC and SMC formation by the original MBC and MC grown in the culture. Flocculation was achieved by controlling the carrier and culture replacements. A carrier replacement ratio of 0.04 d-1 and a culture replacement ratio of 0.95 d-1 minimised the dissolved organic carbon (15.3 mg-C/L) and SMBC residue (7.3 mg/L). Thus, treating primary treated wastewater with MBC formed using fluidised carriers is a promising strategy, enabling the use of whole cells in MBC for renewable energy production.

RESUMEN

Currently, the poor whipping capabilities of anhydrous milk fat (AMF) in aerated emulsion products are a major obstacle for their use in beverages like tea and coffee, as well as in cakes and desserts, presenting fresh hurdles for the food industry. In this study, the mechanism of action of diacylglycerols (DAGs) with different carbon chain lengths and degrees of saturation on the partial coalescence of aerated emulsions was systematically investigated from three fundamental perspectives: fat crystallization, air-liquid interface rheology, and fat globule interface properties. The optimized crystallization of long carbon chain length diacylglycerol (LCD) based on stearate enhances interactions between fat globules at the air-liquid interface (with an elastic modulus E' reaching 246.42 mN/m), leading to a significantly reduced interface membrane strength. This promotes fat crystal-membrane interactions during whipping, resulting in a thermally stable foam structure with excellent shaping capability due to enhanced partial coalescence of fat globules. Although Laurate based medium carbon chain length diacylglycerol (MCD) promoted fat crystallization and optimized interface properties, it showed weaker foam properties because it did not adequately encapsulate air bubbles during whipping. Conversely, oleate long carbon chain length diacylglycerol (OCD) proved to be ineffective in facilitating fat crystal-membrane interaction, causing foam to have a subpar appearance. Hence, drawing from the carefully examined fat crystal-membrane interaction findings, a proposed mechanism sheds light on how DAGs impact the whipping abilities of aerated emulsions. This mechanism serves as a blueprint for creating aerated emulsions with superior whipping capabilities and foam systems that are resistant to heat.

RESUMEN

Recent years have witnessed the explosive development of highly sensitive smart sensors based on conductive polymer foam materials. However, the design and development of multifunctional polymeric foam composites as smart sensors applied in complex solvent and oil environments remain a critical challenge. Herein, we design and synthesize vinyl-terminated polytrifluoropropylmethylsiloxane through anionic ring-opening polymerization to fabricate fluorosilicone rubber foam (FSiRF) materials with nanoscale wrinkled surfaces and reactive Si-H groups via a green and rapid chemical foaming strategy. Based on the strong adhesion between FSiRF materials and consecutive oxidized ketjen black (OKB) nano-network, multifunctional FSiRF nanocomposites were prepared by a dip-coating strategy followed by fluoroalkylsilane modification. The optimized F-OKB@FSiRF nanocomposites exhibit outstanding mechanical flexibility in wide-temperature range (100 cycle compressions from -20 to 200 °C), structure stability (no detached particles after being immersed into various aqueous solutions for up to 15 days), surface superhydrophobicity (water contact angle of 154° and sliding angle of ∼7°), and tunable electrical conductivity (from 10-5 to 10-2 S m-1). Additionally, benefiting from the combined actions of multiple lines of defense (low surface energy groups, physical barriers, and "shielding effect"), the F-OKB@FSiRF sensor presents excellent anti-swelling property and high sensitivity in monitoring both large-deformation and tiny vibrations generated by knocking the beaker, ultrasonic action, agitating, and sinking objects in weak-polar or nonpolar solvents. This work conceivably provides a chemical strategy for the fabrication of multifunctional polymeric foam nanocomposite materials as smart sensors for broad applications.
