Background and Objectives: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a healthcare-associated infections agent and could be an extended spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL) producer. Understanding the transmission of this bacterium in a hospital setting needs accurate typing methods. An antibiogram is used to detect the resistance pattern of the isolates. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus (ERIC)-PCR are rapid, technically simple, and easy-to-interpret DNA typing methods. This study aimed to evaluate the use of antibiotyping, RAPD-, and ERIC-PCR to investigate the heterogeneity of K. pneumoniae isolated from clinical specimens. Materials and Methods: The antibiograms of 46 K. pneumoniae clinical isolates were determined by Vitek® 2 Compact. All isolates underwent RAPD-PCR using AP4 primer and ERIC-PCR using ERIC-2 primer. The dendrogram was generated using the GelJ software and analyzed to determine its similarity. The analysis of antibiogram and the molecular typing diversity index was calculated using the formula of the Simpson's diversity index. Results: About 71.7% of the isolates were ESBL-producers, and more than 80% of isolates were susceptible to amikacin, ertapenem, and meropenem. The antibiotyping produced 32 diverse types with DI = 0.964. In addition, the RAPD-PCR produced 47 different types with DI = 1, while ERIC-PCR was 46 (DI=0.999). Conclusion: Antibiotyping, RAPD- and ERIC-PCR showed powerful discrimination power among the isolates, supported the diversity of K. pneumoniae isolates in current study. These combination could be promising tools for clonal relationship determination, including in tracking the transmission of the outbreak's agent in hospital setting.

Background and Objectives: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic Leptospira serovars. The genus Leptospira cannot differentiated by conventional techniques. However, identity determination of pathogenic serovar is precious of public health problems and epidemiological studies. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis facilitates rapid identification of Leptospires to the serovar levels. Materials and Methods: In this study, we employed PFGE to evaluate 28 Leptospira isolates, with animal, human and environmental origin, obtained from Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute of Karaj, Iran. PFGE patterns of 28 Leptospira serovars were generated using the Not I restriction enzyme in comparison with the lambda ladder. Results: Out of 28 serovars evaluated, we identified 22 different pulsed types, designated P1-P22. Out of 22 pulse groups, 3 were found to be a common type, but others were a single Type. Groups consisting of the common type were P3, P9, P14, and P16. The results showed that the discriminatory index of PFGE by Not I enzyme was 0.99, demonstrating heterogeneous differentiation among serovar members. Conclusion: The PFGE methodology used in this study showed excellent interlaboratory report usability, rapid, reliable, enabling standardization and data sharing between laboratories.

Yersinia enterocolitica (Y. enterocolitica) is the most frequent etiological agent of yersiniosis and has been responsible for several national outbreaks in Norway and elsewhere. A standardized high-resolution method, such as core genome Multilocus Sequence Typing (cgMLST), is needed for pathogen traceability at the national and international levels. In this study, we developed and implemented a cgMLST scheme for Y. enterocolitica. We designed a cgMLST scheme in SeqSphere + using high-quality genomes from different Y. enterocolitica biotype sublineages. The scheme was validated if more than 95% of targets were found across all tested Y. enterocolitica: 563 Norwegian genomes collected between 2012 and 2022 and 327 genomes from public data sets. We applied the scheme to known outbreaks to establish a threshold for identifying major complex types (CTs) based on the number of allelic differences. The final cgMLST scheme included 2,582 genes with a median of 97.9% (interquartile range 97.6%-98.8%) targets found across all tested genomes. Analysis of outbreaks identified all outbreak strains using single linkage clustering at four allelic differences. This threshold identified 311 unique CTs in Norway, of which CT18, CT12, and CT5 were identified as the most frequently associated with outbreaks. The cgMLST scheme showed a very good performance in typing Y. enterocolitica using diverse data sources and was able to identify outbreak clusters. We recommend the implementation of this scheme nationally and internationally to facilitate Y. enterocolitica surveillance and improve outbreak response in national and cross-border outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of a multiparametric ultrasound imaging omics model in predicting the risk of postoperative recurrence and molecular typing of breast cancer. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 534 female patients diagnosed with breast cancer through preoperative ultrasonography and pathology, from January 2018 to June 2023 at the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University. Univariate analysis and multifactorial logistic regression modeling were used to identify independent risk factors associated with clinical characteristics. The PyRadiomics package was used to delineate the region of interest in selected ultrasound images and extract radiomic features. Subsequently, radiomic scores were established through Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression and Support Vector Machine (SVM) methods. The predictive performance of the model was assessed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. Evaluation of diagnostic efficacy and clinical practicability was conducted through calibration curves and decision curves. RESULTS: In the training set, the AUC values for the postoperative recurrence risk prediction model were 0.9489, and for the validation set, they were 0.8491. Regarding the molecular typing prediction model, the AUC values in the training set and validation set were 0.93 and 0.92 for the HER-2 overexpression phenotype, 0.94 and 0.74 for the TNBC phenotype, 1.00 and 0.97 for the luminal A phenotype, and 1.00 and 0.89 for the luminal B phenotype, respectively. Based on a comprehensive analysis of calibration and decision curves, it was established that the model exhibits strong predictive performance and clinical practicability. CONCLUSION: The use of multiparametric ultrasound imaging omics proves to be of significant value in predicting both the risk of postoperative recurrence and molecular typing in breast cancer. This non-invasive approach offers crucial guidance for the diagnosis and treatment of the condition.

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis has been discovered to be a critical factor in developing tumors and ischemic diseases. However, the role of angiogenesis-related genes (ARGs) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains unclear. METHODS: The GSE66360 dataset was used as the training cohort, and the GSE48060 dataset was used as the external validation cohort. The random forest (RF) algorithm was used to identify the signature genes. Consensus clustering analysis was used to identify robust molecular clusters associated with angiogenesis. The ssGSEA was used to analyze the correlation between ARGs and immune cell infiltration. In addition, we constructed miRNA-gene, transcription factor network, and targeted drug network of signature genes. RT-qPCR was used to verify the expression levels of signature genes. RESULTS: Seven signature ARGs were identified based on the RF algorithm. Receiver operating characteristic curves confirmed the classification accuracy of the risk predictive model based on signature ARGs (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.9596 in the training cohort and AUC = 0.7773 in the external validation cohort). Subsequently, the ARG clusters were identified by consensus clustering. Cluster B had a more generalized high expression of ARGs and was significantly associated with immune infiltration. The miRNA and transcription factor network provided new ideas for finding potential upstream targets and biomarkers. Finally, the results of RT-qPCR were consistent with the bioinformatics analysis, further validating our results. CONCLUSIONS: Angiogenesis is closely related to AMI, and characterizing the angiogenic features of patients with AMI can help to risk-stratify patients and provide personalized treatment.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly prevalent and deadly cancer, with limited treatment options for advanced-stage patients. Disulfidptosis is a recently identified mechanism of programmed cell death that occurs in SLC7A11 high-expressing cells due to glucose starvation-induced disintegration of the cellular disulfide skeleton. We aimed to explore the potential of disulfidptosis, as a prognostic and therapeutic marker in HCC. METHODS: We classified HCC patients into two disulfidptosis subtypes (C1 and C2) based on the transcriptional profiles of 31 disulfrgs using a non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithm. Further, five genes (NEIL3, MMP1, STC2, ADH4 and CFHR3) were screened by Cox regression analysis and machine learning algorithm to construct a disulfidptosis scoring system (disulfS). Cell proliferation assay, F-actin staining and PBMC co-culture model were used to validate that disulfidptosis occurs in HCC and correlates with immunotherapy response. RESULTS: Our results suggests that the low disulfidptosis subtype (C2) demonstrated better overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) prognosis, along with lower levels of immunosuppressive cell infiltration and activation of the glycine/serine/threonine metabolic pathway. Additionally, the low disulfidptosis group showed better responses to immunotherapy and potential antagonism with sorafenib treatment. As a total survival risk factor, disulfS demonstrated high predictive efficacy in multiple validation cohorts. We demonstrated the presence of disulfidptosis in HCC cells and its possible relevance to immunotherapeutic sensitization. CONCLUSION: The present study indicates that novel biomarkers related to disulfidptosis may serve as useful clinical diagnostic indicators for liver cancer, enabling the prediction of prognosis and identification of potential treatment targets.

AIMS: To investigate the genetic profile and characterize antimicrobial resistance, including the main ß-lactam antibiotic resistance genes, in Acinetobacterbaumannii isolates from a tertiary hospital in Recife-PE, Brazil, in the post-COVID-19 pandemic period. METHODS AND RESULTS: Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were collected between 2023 and 2024 from diverse clinical samples. Antimicrobial resistance testing followed standardized protocols, with ß-lactamase-encoding genes detected via PCR and sequencing. Investigation into ISAba1 upstream of blaOXA-carbapenemase and blaADC genes was also conducted. Genetic diversity was assessed through ERIC-PCR. Among the 78 A. baumannii, widespread resistance to multiple antimicrobials was evident. Various acquired ß-lactamase-encoding genes (blaOXA-23,-24,-58,-143, blaVIM, and blaNDM) were detected. Furthermore, this is the first report of blaVIM-2 in A. baumannii isolates harboring either the blaOXA-23-like or the blaOXA-143 gene in Brazil. Molecular typing revealed a high genetic heterogeneity among the isolates, and multi-clonal dissemination. CONCLUSION: The accumulation of genetic resistance determinants underscores the necessity for stringent infection control measures and robust antimicrobial stewardship programs to curb multidrug-resistant strains.

Recent advances in high-throughput proteomic profiling technologies have facilitated the precise quantification of numerous proteins across multiple specimens concurrently. Researchers have the opportunity to comprehensively analyze the molecular signatures in plentiful medical specimens or disease pattern cell lines. Along with advances in data analysis and integration, proteomics data could be efficiently consolidated and employed to recognize precise elementary molecular mechanisms and decode individual biomarkers, guiding the precision treatment of tumors. Herein, we review a broad array of proteomics technologies and the progress and methods for the integration of proteomics data and further discuss how to better merge proteomics in precision medicine and clinical settings.

The aim of this study was to go through the molecular methods used for typing of carbapenem-resistant Acientobacter baumannii (CRAB) isolates for investigating the molecular epidemiology all over the world. Multiple typing techniques are required to understand the source and nature of outbreaks caused by Acientobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) and acquired resistance to antimicrobials. Nowadays, there is gradual shift from traditional typing methods to modern molecular methods to study molecular epidemiology and infection control. Molecular typing of A. baumannii strains has been revolutionized significantly in the last 2 decades. A few sequencing-based techniques have been proven as a breakthrough and opened new prospects, which have not been achieved by the traditional methods. In this review, discussed different pre-existing and recently used typing methods to explore the molecular epidemiology of A. baumannii pertaining in context with human infections.

Objective: In this study, we investigated the value of molecular typing combined with integrated positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) semi-quantitative indices in endometrial cancer risk stratification. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 86 patients who were pathologically diagnosed with endometrial cancer and underwent surgical treatment after curettage at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University between January 2017 and March 2023. Prior to surgery, each patient underwent integrated PET/MRI examination. The postoperative samples were subjected to pathological diagnosis, immunohistochemistry, and POLE gene sequencing. The differences in clinicopathological features between the four molecular subtypes and the differences in integrated PET/MRI semi-quantitative indexes (SUV max, ADC min) between the four molecular subtypes were analyzed. The cutoff value of molecular typing combined with integrated PET/MRI semi-quantitative indices for endometrial cancer risk stratification was determined. Results: There were statistically significant differences in pathological types and tumor grades among the four molecular subtypes of endometrial cancer. The values of the four integrated PET/MRI semi-quantitative indices (SUV max and ADC min) of the molecular subtypes were statistically different. The SUV max was greater in the p53abn mutation group than in the POLE mutation group (P < 0.05). The ADC minimum of the POLE mutation group and the MMR-d group was lower than the NSMP group (P < 0.05). Molecular typing combined with the integrated PET/MRI semi-quantitative SUV max index can predict the low/medium risk group of endometrial cancer and the medium-high/high risk group, and the cut-off value of SUV max for predicting the risk of early endometrial cancer was 14.72 (sensitivity 66.7%, specificity 68.7%). Conclusion: Molecular typing combined with integrated PET/MRI semi-quantitative indicators is useful to achieve risk stratification in patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer and guide individualized treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) spreads worldwide and occurrence of mastitis caused by it holds significant implications for public health. We aim to reveal the molecular typing, antibiotic resistance and virulence gene profile of S. aureus causing mastitis through investigation. METHODS: A total of 200 isolates of S. aureus were collected from outpatients infected with mastitis in a hospital in Beijing from 2020.7 to 2021.7. The molecular characteristics were analyzed by MLST and spa typing, virulence genes were screened by PCR, antibiotic susceptible test was performed by VITEK® 2 Compact system and phylogenetic analysis was performed by MEGA11 and iTOL. RESULTS: Nineteen sequence types (STs) belonging to 9 clone complexes (CCs) were identified. ST22 was the most dominant clone (77.0%, 154/200). MRSA accounted for 19.0% (38/200) and 89.5% (34/38) of MRSA isolates belonged to CC22 and CC59. The isolates had relatively low levels of antibiotic resistance, with the exception of ß-lactams and macrolides with resistance rates above 50.0%. The carrying rate of pvl in the ST22-MRSA strains were 84.2% and the detection rates of seb and pvl in the MRSA isolates were significantly higher than those in the MSSA isolates, while the hlg, fnbA and sdrD showed opposite results. Whole genome sequenced specimens of MRSA strains X4 and B5 show the same evolutionary origin as ST22 EMRSA-15 (HE681097), which is popular in Europe. CONCLUSIONS: The method based on molecular epidemiology is an important tool for tracking the spread of S. aureus infections. We need to be alert to the major MRSA clones CC22 and CC59 in the region and be vigilant to the possible pandemic and spread of ST22 EMRSA-15.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) is an intrinsically drug-resistant and biofilm-forming bacteria causing infections in immunocompromised humans. This study reports the isolation of five S. maltophilia strains from saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of AIDS patients with periodontitis in São Paulo, Brazil, showing resistance to ceftazidime, strong biofilm formation capacity and a close genetic relationship. The presence of S. maltophilia strains in saliva and CGF of patients with AIDS and periodontitis is a concern for the presence and persistence of intrinsically resistant bacteria in the oral environment, enhancing the risk for the development of severe infections in immunocompromised patients.

BACKGROUND: Serratia marcescens is known to cause outbreaks in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Traditionally epidemiological data, antimicrobial resistance patterns and epidemiological typing have been used to guide infection prevention methods. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) applications such as core-genome multi-locus sequence typing (cgMLST) applied during an outbreak would potentially yield more information. AIM: To use cgMLST to acquire detailed information on the source and spread of bacteria, enabling more efficient control measures during an S. marcescens outbreak at a NICU. METHODS: Neonates admitted to the NICU of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) during an outbreak between September 2023 and January 2024, with S. marcescens being cultured, were included. Environmental samples were taken to search for a common source, antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed, and antimicrobial resistance genes were analysed. FINDINGS: S. marcescens strains from 17 of the 20 positive patients were available for molecular typing. The cgMLST scheme revealed five different complex types consisting of four separate clusters. Multiple clusters made an unidentified persistent environmental source as cause of the outbreak less likely, leading to a quick downscaling of infection prevention measures. Differences were shown in aminoglycoside resistance patterns of isolates within the same complex types and patients. CONCLUSION: The use of ad-hoc cgMLST provided timely data for rational decision-making during an S. marcescens outbreak at the NICU. Antibiotic phenotyping alone was found not to be suitable for studying clonal spread during this outbreak with S. marcescens.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) plays an important ecological role, and is a useful bioindicator to recognize the evolution of resistance in human, animal and environment. Recently, extended-spectrum ß-lactamases (ESBL) producing E.coli has posed a threat to public health. Generally, captive healthy giant pandas are not exposed to antibiotics; however, they still acquire antimicrobial resistant bacteria. In order to understand whether there is an exchange of resistance genes within the ecosystems of captive giant pandas, this study explored resistance characteristics of 330 commensal E. coli isolates from feces of giant pandas, the surroundings, and breeders. Isolates from different sources showed similar resistance phenotype, and ESBL/AmpC-producing isolates showed more profound resistance to antibiotics than non-ESBL/AmpC-producing isolates (P<0.05). Furthermore, the occurrence of broad-spectrum ß-lactamase related resistance genes and colistin resistance genes was detected, and isolates phylogenetic typing and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) were applied in this study. Seven different ß-lactamase resistance genes (blaCTX-M-55, blaCTX-M-15, blaCTX-M-27, blaCTX-M-65, blaTEM-1, blaOXA-1 and blaCMY) and mcr-1 were found in 68 ESBL/AmpC-producing isolates. blaCTX-M-55 (48.53 %) was found the most predominant resistance genes, followed by blaTEM-1 (19.12 %) and blaCTX-M-27 (16.18 %). Nonetheless, blaCTX-M-55 was commonly detected in the isolates from giant pandas (63.16 %), the surroundings (43.48 %), and breeders (33.33 %). However, there were no carbapenemase genes detected in this study. mcr-1 was harbored in only one isolate from giant panda. Forty-five tansconjugants were successfully obtained in the conjugation experiments. The presence of antimicrobial resistance and related resistance genes tested were observed in the transconjugants. The results indicated that 52.63 % of the isolates from giant panda 73.91 % of the isolates from surroundings, and 100 % of the isolates from breeders were phylogroup A. Total of 27 sequence types (ST) were recognized from the isolate by MLST and found that ST48 (19/68; 27.94 %) was the predominant ST type, especially in the isolates from giant pandas and the surroundings. In conclusion, commensal ESBL/AmpC-producing E. coli becomes a reservoir of ESBL resistance genes, which is a potential threaten to health of giant pandas. The interaction between giant pandas, surroundings and breeders contribute to development of resistant phenotypes and genotypes which might transfer across species or the surroundings easily; hence, strict monitoring based on a "One Health" approach is recommended.

RESUMEN

For more than 20 years gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) have been a paradigm for a targeted treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors. A fundamental prerequisite for a neoadjuvant or adjuvant treatment of localized GIST or an additive treatment of metastatic GIST is the molecular typing of tumors, ideally at the initial diagnosis. In addition, the possibility of a hereditary or syndromic predisposition must be considered because this results in consequences for the treatment and a different follow-up strategy.

Cryptococcosis is one of the major life-threatening opportunistic/systemic fungal diseases of worldwide occurrence, which can be asymptomatic or establish pneumonia and meningoencephalitis mainly in immunosuppressed patients, caused by the Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii species complexes. Acquisition is by inhaling fungal propagules from avian droppings, tree hollows and decaying wood, and the association of the molecular types with geographic origin, virulence and antifungal resistance have epidemiological importance. Since data on cryptococcosis in Alagoas are limited, we sought to determine the molecular types of etiological agents collected from clinical and environmental sources. We evaluated 21 isolates previously collected from cerebrospinal fluid and from environment sources (pigeon droppings and tree hollows) in Maceió-Alagoas (Brazil). Restriction fragment length polymorphism of URA5 gene was performed to characterize among the eight standard molecular types (VNI-VNIV and VGI-VGIV). Among isolates, 66.67% (14) were assigned to C. neoformans VNI - 12 of them (12/14) recovered from liquor and 2 from a tree hollow (2/14). One isolate from pigeon droppings (4.76%) corresponded to C. neoformans VNIV, while five strains from tree hollows and one from pigeon droppings (6, 28.57%) to C. gattii VGII. VNI-type was present in clinical and environmental samples and most C. neoformans infections were observed in HIV-positive patients, while types VNIV and VGII were prevalent in environmental sources in Alagoas. This is the first molecular characterization of Cryptococcus spp. in Alagoas, our study provides additional information on the ecoepidemiology of Cryptococcus spp. in Brazil, contributing to a closer view of the endemic species.

Although mobile phones as a rapid communication vehicle can lead to improved quality of healthcare, they can also facilitate the transmission of pathogens to patients. This current research focuses on genetic diversity, and genes involved in resistance and biofilm production of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from mobile phones of medical students. Antibiotic resistance profiling and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of antibiotic resistance and biofilm-related genes were investigated and statistically analyzed. Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types were analyzed by multiplex PCR, and S. aureus protein A gene typing (spa typing) was done using PCR and sequencing. Sixty-four S. aureus isolates (16.8%) were obtained from 380 medical students' mobile phones who were working in hospitals. The findings showed that 71.9% of the isolates were MRSA and 78.1% were classified as MDR. All isolates exhibited sensitivity to vancomycin and linezolid. Overall, 7.8% of the isolates displayed an inducible clindamycin resistance phenotype, while 26.7% showed resistance to mupirocin. The results indicated that 68.8% of the isolates were biofilm producers, with 7 isolates (15.9%) classified as strong producers, 22 isolates (50%) as moderate producers, and 15 isolates (34.1%) as weak producers. The most prevalent type was CC8-MRSA III/t030 (18.7%), followed by CC8-MRSA III/t037 (12.5%), CC/ST22-MSSA/t790 (10.9%), CC1-MRSA IV-t114 (9.4%), CC1-MRSA IV-t127 (7.8%), CC8-MRSA V/t064 (7.8%), CC/ST15-MSSA-t360 (7.8%), CC30-MSSA/t021(6.3%), MRSA V-t355 (6.3%), CC8-MRSA III/t421 (4.7%), CC1-MRSA V-t267 (4.7%), and CC/ST15-MSSA-t084 (3.1%). The genetic diversity and prevalent multidrug resistance indicate that the resistance situation of S. aureus recovered from mobile phones in Tehran is severe, posing a potential threat to patients, the community, and healthcare settings.

In 2019-2022, a prolonged outbreak of oxacillinase (OXA)-48-producing Citrobacter farmeri due to a persistent environmental contamination, occurred in our haematology intensive care unit. In April 2019, we isolated OXA-48-producing C. farmeri from rectal samples of two patients in weekly screenings. The cases had stayed in the same hospital room but 4 months apart. We screened five patients who had stayed in this room between the two cases and identified a third case. Over the following 3 years, five other cases were detected, the last case in September 2022. In total, eight cases were detected: seven colonised with the bacterium and one infected with a lethal outcome. All cases stayed in the same hospital room. We detected OXA-48-producing C. farmeri from a shower, washbasin drains and wastewater drainage of the bathroom of the hospital room. Molecular typing confirmed that all C. farmeri isolates from the environment and the cases were indistinguishable. Despite bundle measures to control the outbreak, the bacterium persisted in the system, which resulted in transmission to new patients. A design defect in the placement of wastewater drains contributed to the persistence and proliferation of the bacterium. The room was closed after the last case and the bathroom rebuilt.

BACKGROUND: The main causes of hospital- and community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a group of Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains with multiple virulence factors known as uropathogenic E. coli. METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred E. coli isolates from the urine specimens of hospital- and community-acquired UTI patients were characterized based on their virulence factors and genetic relatedness using PCR and RAPD‒PCR, respectively. Among all, the traT (71%), sitA (64%), ompT (54%), malX (49%), ibeA (44%), tsh (39%), hlyD (18%) and cnf1 (12%) genes had the highest to lowest frequencies, respectively. There was no significant difference between the frequency of tested virulence genes in E. coli isolates from inpatients and outpatients. The frequency of the hlyD gene was significantly greater in E. coli isolates from patients hospitalized in gynecology, dermatology and intensive care unit (ICU) wards than in those from other wards. Eight virulence gene patterns were common among the isolates of inpatients in different wards of the same hospital, of which five patterns belonged to the isolates of inpatients in the same ward. More E. coli isolates with similar virulence gene patterns and greater genetic similarity were found in female patients than in male patients. The analysis of the RAPD‒PCR dendrograms revealed more genetic similarities among the E. coli isolates from inpatients than among those from outpatients. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate the presence of a wide variety of virulence factors in E. coli isolates and the possibility of spreading the same clones in different wards of the hospital.
