INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is a disease with high global prevalence. Clinical inflammatory biomarkers have been proposed as prognostic indicators in oncology. This research aims to determine the relationship between inflammatory markers and overall survival in breast cancer patients from four representative hospitals in Lima, Peru. METHODS: This is a multicentric, analytical, longitudinal retrospective cohort study with survival analysis in female patients with breast cancer, from 2015 to 2020, who had received at least one complete treatment regimen. The dependent variable was overall survival, and the independent variables were inflammatory markers neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR), albumin, and red cell distribution width; intervening variables included age, clinical stage, molecular subtype, and other known prognostic factors. The Kaplan-Meier method was applied to generate survival curves with the Log-Rank test, and finally, Cox regression, to find crude and adjusted hazard ratios (HR). RESULTS: Of 705 evaluated patients, 618 were analyzed. The mean age was 56.6 ± 12.3 years, 18.0% of patients were pure HER2 positive, 39.3% luminal A, 29.9% luminal B, 11.0% triple-negative, and 81.4% showed overweight and obesity. The average overall survival was 51.1 months. In the multivariate analysis, factors significantly related to lower overall survival were PLR > 150 (adjusted HR: 2.33; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22, 4.44) and stage III (adjusted HR: 4.15; 95% CI: 1.35, 12.83). CONCLUSIONS: The Elevated Platelet-Lymphocyte Index and advanced clinical stage were associated with lower overall survival in breast cancer patients. Furthermore, PLR >150 proved to be an independent prognostic factor for mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are markers of systemic inflammatory status. The relationship between NLR, PLR, and mortality is controversial among hemodialysis (HD) patients. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate NLR and PLR in the prediction of mortality in chronic HD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 130 patients with a follow-up for 66 months. Four groups were established according to NLR-PLR values. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards analysis were used. RESULTS: NLR-PLR correlated positively with C-reactive protein. Cox regression analysis for overall mortality among the four groups included age (HR 1.027, 95% CI 1.003-1.053) and albumin (HR 0.25, 95% CI 0.073-0.85). For cardiovascular (CV) mortality only pulse pressure differential (PPD) was included (HR 1.033; 95% CI 1.014-1.052). Low NLRs and high PLRs were associated with CV mortality (Log Rank test, p = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS: Low NLRs and high PLRs predict the risk of CV mortality among HD patients.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is a lack of affordable and accessible indicators that can accurately predict immune-related adverse events (irAEs) resulting from the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). In order to address this knowledge gap, our study explore the potential predictive value of two ratios, namely the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), for irAEs in cancer patients. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library. Studies involving NLR or PLR with irAEs were included. Quality and risk of bias of the selected studies were assessed. Forest plots were created based on Cox model analysis. Random effects meta-analyses were conducted to estimate odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: After screening 594 studies, a total of 7 eligible studies with 1068 cancer patients were included. Analysis based on Cox regression showed that low neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (L-NLR) (OR = 3.02, 95% CI 1.51 to 6.05, P = 0.002) and low platelet-lymphocyte ratio (L-PLR) (OR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.21 to 2.76, P = 0.004) were associated with irAEs. In the subgroup analysis of cut-off value, when the NLR cut-off value was 3, irAEs was significantly correlated with NLR (OR = 2.63, 95% CI 1.63 to 4.26, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Both L-NLR and L-PLR have been found to be significantly associated with irAEs. Consequently, patients identified as being at a higher risk for irAEs should be subjected to more diligent monitoring and close observation.

El cáncer de pulmón es la neoplasia maligna que causa mayor mortalidad en el mundo. Dentro de los factores pronósticos de esta entidad, se encuentran el índice neutrófilo-linfocito y el índice plaquetas-linfocito, parámetros hematológicos que se utilizan para evaluar la inflamación y la respuesta inmunitaria en el cuerpo humano. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica con el objetivo de exponer el valor que presentan el índice neutrófilo-linfocito y el índice plaquetas-linfocito como herramientas pronósticas del cáncer de pulmón, teniendo en cuenta la evidencia científica publicada hasta el momento. Se estudiaron 46 artículos, 28 de los cuales resultaron seleccionados para la elaboración de la investigación. Se emplearon como criterios de selección la calidad de los estudios, el nivel de actualización sobre el tema en cuestión, así como la fiabilidad de la fuente. Se usaron los recursos disponibles en la red Infomed para la selección de la información, entre ellos: PubMed, SciELO, EBSCO, Cumed, LILACS y Scopus, además de Medline, Academic Search Premier y MedicLatina. Se expuso el valor que presentan el índice neutrófilo-linfocito y el índice plaquetas-linfocito como herramientas pronósticas del cáncer de pulmón de células no pequeñas, en todos los estadios y con modalidades terapéuticas diferentes.
Lung cancer is the malignant neoplasm that causes higher mortality in the world. Among the prognostic factors of this entity are the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio, hematological parameters that are used to assess inflammation and the immune response in the human body. A bibliographic review was carried out with the objective of exposing the value of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio as a prognostic tool for lung cancer, taking into account the scientific evidence published to date. A total of 46 articles were studied, of which 28 were selected for the development of the research. The quality of the studies, the level of updating on the subject in question, as well as the reliability of the source was used as selection criteria. The resources available in the Infomed network were used to select the information, including PubMed, SciELO and EBSCO, Cumed, LILACS and Scopus, as well as Medline, Academic Search Premier and MedicLatina databases. The value of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio as a prognostic tool in non-small cell lung cancer at all stages and with different therapeutic modalities was exposed.

Introduction: The hemogram and hemogram-derivative ratios (HDRs) are becoming markers of the severity and mortality of COVID-19. We evaluated the hemograms and serial weekly HDRs [neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-platelet ratio (NPR) and systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII)] in the survivors and non-survivors of COVID-19. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical notes and serial hemograms of real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-confirmed COVID-19 adults hospitalized from April 2020 to March 2021 from the time of diagnosis to the 3rd week of diagnosis. Results: Of the 320 adults, 257 (80.3%) were survivors and had a lower mean age than the non-survivors (57.73 vs. 64.65 years, p < 0.001). At diagnosis, the non-survivors had lower lymphocyte (pâ¯=â¯0.002) and basophil (pâ¯=â¯0.049) counts and the hematocrit showed a p-value (Is this what you meant???) of 0.021); higher NLR (p < 0.001), PLR (pâ¯=â¯0.047), NPR (pâ¯=â¯0.022) and SII (pâ¯=â¯0.022). Using general linear models, the survivors and non-survivors showed significant variations with weekly lymphocyte count (p < 0.001), neutrophil count (pâ¯=â¯0.005), NLR (pâ¯=â¯0.009), MLR (pâ¯=â¯0.010) and PLR (pâ¯=â¯0.035). All HDRs remained higher in the non-survivors in the 2nd week and 3rd week of diagnosis and the HDRs were higher in the intubated patients than in the non-intubated patients. The NLR and SII were more efficient predictors of mortality in COVID-19 patients. Conclusions: This study shows that serial lymphocyte and neutrophil counts, NLR, PLR, MLR, NPR and SII could serve as good and easily accessible markers of severity and predictors of outcomes in COVID-19 patients and should be used for the monitoring of treatment response.

Objective: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) begins in adolescence and has cardiovascular and metabolic components in later years. Cystatin C and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and neutrophil-lymphocyte and platelet-lymphocyte ratios are associated with metabolic and inflammatory events. Here, we evaluated inflammatory and metabolic parameters in normal and overweight adolescents with PCOS. Materials and methods: This prospective case-control study enrolled 90 adolescents with PCOS and 100 matched by age and BMI healthy adolescents classified as either normal weight (NW) and overweight (OW). Groups were compared based on inflammatory and metabolic parameters (serum cystatin C, hs-CRP, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lipids, fasting blood glucose-insulin (FBG-FI), HOMA-IR levels, waist circumference [WC], and waist-hip ratio [WHR]). The relationship between the parameters were compared and predictive abilities were evaluated. Results: Cystatin C, hs-CRP, NLR, triglyceride (TG), FBG-FI, HOMA-IR, WC, and WHR were significantly higher in those with PCOS. The NW PCOS group had significantly higher TG, cystatin C, hs-CRP, and NLR versus OW controls. The highest HOMA-IR values were observed in OW PCOS (p < .05). Cystatin C and hs-CRP sensitivity and specificity were significant (p < 0.05). Cystatin C and hs-CRP were positively correlated with other metabolic parameters. Conclusion: Independent of BMI, inflammatory and metabolic parameters are significantly higher in adolescents with PCOS compared to controls and even worse in those who are also OW. Therefore, adolescents with PCOS should be encouraged to maintain healthy lifestyles and weights to avoid metabolic risks. Hs-CRP and cystatin C could be promising markers to predictive of future metabolic risks.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the differences in the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in pregnant women with and without COVID-19. METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional, retrospective, comparative, open, controlled study done from January to April 2021 at the UMAE Hospital de Gineco Obstetricia "Luis Castelazo Ayala" Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. Mexico City, Mexico: Patients were divided into those with a negative test for COVID-19 and those with a positive test, with the latter then being divided according to disease severity into mild, moderate, and severe groups. In all the NLR and PLR were calculated. Symptoms, vital signs, and oxygen saturation were documented. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Central tendency and dispersion measures, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, and chi-squared test were used. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and odds ratio (OR) were calculated. RESULTS: Seventy-seven patients were included, 24 without COVID-19 and 53 with COVID-19. There were 33, 10, and 10 patients in the mild, moderate, and severe disease groups, respectively. There was no difference in NLR between the groups and the PLR was significantly higher in the severe disease group. With a 5.1 NLR cutoff point, between normal and those with severe disease, the sensitivity was 70% and specificity 63%, whilst with a 221 PLR cutoff point, the sensitivity was 90% and the specificity 83% (OR 45, 95% CI 4.40-461.7). CONCLUSION: PLR more than NLR was useful to detect pregnant patients with COVID-19 with severe disease.

Purpose: To assess the relationship and prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with poor final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) after surgical repair of open globe injuries (OGI) in adults. Design: Retrospective analysis of data from an ongoing prospective cohort of consecutive patients. Methods: In a tertiary university hospital, 197 eyes of 197 patients were included between 2013 and 2017. NLR and PLR were obtained from pre-operative blood tests to analyze its relationship with poor final BCVA. Results: Severe visual impairment (SVI) was defined as ≤20/200, and was observed in 96 (48.7%) patients after surgical repair of OGI. SVI patients had higher NLR (7.4 ± 6.6 vs. 4.0 ± 3.2, p < 0.001), and PLR (167 ± 92 vs. 139 ± 64; p = 0.021) than non-SVI. NLR ≥ 3.47 and PLR ≥ 112.2 were the best cut-off values for SVI, were univariate risk factors for SVI, and had sensitivity: 69.0, 71.4, and specificity: 63.6, 44.8, respectively. In multivariate analysis, only OTS, athalamia, and hyphema remained as risk factors. NLR had significant correlation with ocular trauma score (OTS) (r = -0.389, p < 0.001) and final BCVA (r = 0.345, p < 0.001). Limitations: Simultaneous trauma in other parts of the body that could influence the laboratory findings. Conclusion: Patients with SVI after a repaired OGI had increased pre-operative NLR and PLR levels. High NLR and PLR are risk factors for SVI in univariate analysis. It is confirmed that low OTS is a risk factor for SVI. High NLR and PLR could be used as a prognostic tool to identify patients at higher risk for SVI after repair of OGI.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze inflammatory markers among patients with endometrial cancer, hyperplasia with atypia/endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia, hyperplasia without atypia, and normal controls, thus observing the stage at which inflammation becomes the most significant. METHODS: A total of 444 patients who had endometrial sampling were included in the study (endometrial cancer, n=79; endometrial hyperplasia with atypia/endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia, n=27; endometrial hyperplasia without atypia, n=238; and normal controls, n=100). Neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, platelet count, platelet distribution width, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, platelet/lymphocyte ratio, CA-125, and endometrial thickness of the patients were recorded. RESULTS: Comparing the groups for neutrophil count, the hyperplasia with atypia group had higher values compared with both the hyperplasia without atypia group and the control group (p=0.003). When compared for the lymphocyte count, the hyperplasia with atypia group had lower values compared with the control group (p=0.014). Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio of the hyperplasia with atypia group was higher than all other groups, and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio of the cancer group was higher than the control group (p=0.001). Platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, and platelet/lymphocyte ratio values were not significantly different among groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Considering the inflammatory markers, the most prominent result was that the hyperplasia with atypia group had neutrophilia, lymphopenia, and increased neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio compared with other groups.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the predictive role of inflammatory hematological markers on treatment success in in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients. METHODS: In this study, we analyzed the data from the patients who admitted to our IVF center, and we recorded demographic characteristics, medical histories, laboratory biomarkers, cycle characteristics, and IVF outcomes from the patients' files. We assessed the value of white blood cell (WBC) counts, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet/lymphocyte (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) of the patients from their complete blood count. We compared these values in terms of predicting positive HCG test after embryo transfer (ET). RESULTS: There were 132 patients, of which 63 (47.7%) were treated for male factor, 43 (32.6%) for unexplained infertility, 19 (14.4%) for diminished ovarian reserve, 5 (3.8%) for endometriosis and 2 (1.5%) for hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. After ovarian stimulation and oocyte retrieval, 115 patients underwent embryo transfer, and 28 patients had a positive HCG test (24.3%). The positive HCG group had a statistically lower PLR when compared to the HCG (-) group (p=0.02). In the ROC analysis, PLR was significant in predicting positive HCG (p=0.028). However, when we added other factors to the model, only age and MII oocyte count were successful in predicting pregnancy outcomes in a logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSION: According our results, inflammatory hematological markers were not effective in predicting IVF success.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of study were to assess platelet counts, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), RWD (red cells distribution width) and fasting glucose in patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and invasive cervical cancer; and to relate these parameters to prognostic factors and survival in cervical cancer. STUDY DESIGN: We evaluated the patients with confirmed diagnosis of invasive cervical cancer (n = 102), and CIN (n = 102). Histological type, NLR, PLR, RDW, platelets count, fasting glucose, staging, overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS) were evaluated. The results of laboratory parameters were assessed by Mann-Whitney test. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the best cut-off values. Survival was verified by the Kaplan-Meyer method followed by the Gehan-Breslow test. Multivariate analysis was performed using Cox regression. The level of significance was less than 0.05. RESULTS: Comparing CIN and invasive malignancies, higher values of NLR, PLR, RDW and fasting glucose were found in cancer patients (p < 0.0001, p = 0.011, p = 0.0153 and p = 0.0096, respectively). In cervical cancer, higher NLR and PLR values were found at stage II to IV when compared to stage I (p = 0.0066 and p = 0.005, respectively). ROC curves were performed. In invasive neoplasms, the cut-off values for NLR and PLR in the comparison between stage I and greater than I were 4 and 165.45, respectively. For survival curves, there was lower OS and DFS in patients with NLR greater than 4 (p = 0.0004 and p = 0.0153, respectively) and PLR greater than 165.45 (p = 0.0319 and p = 0.0362, respectively). After multivariate analysis, only NLR remained as an independent factor in DFS (HR = 6.095, 95 % CI = 1.120-33.177, p = 0.037) and OS (HR = 4.522, 95 % CI = 1.241-16.479, p = 0.022) CONCLUSION: Higher NLR is associated to lower OS and DFS in invasive uterine cervical neoplasia, and can be considered an independent factor of worse prognosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the relationship of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) with clinicopathological characteristics of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). METHODS: This retrospective study included 390 patients with DTC who had complete blood cell counts available at the time of surgery. NLR, PLR, and MLR were calculated, and the risk of cancer-related death, structural recurrence, and response to therapy were assessed using the eighth edition of the tumor-node-metastasis classification, American Thyroid Association (ATA) Risk Stratification System, and ATA Response to Therapy Reclassification, respectively. RESULTS: PLR was higher in patients with distant metastasis than in those without (133.15±43.95 versus 119.24±45.69, p=0.0345) and lower in patients with disease-free status (117.72±44.70 versus 131.07±47.85, p=0.0089) than in those who experienced persistent disease or death. Patients aged ≥55 years had a higher MLR than those aged <55 years (0.26±0.10 versus 0.24±0.12, p=0.0379). Higher MLR (odds ratio [OR]: 8.775, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.532-50.273, p=0.0147), intermediate ATA risk (OR: 4.892, 95% CI: 2.492-9.605, p≤0.0001), and high ATA risk (OR: 5.998, 95% CI: 3.126-11.505, p≤0.0001) were risk factors associated with active disease. NLR was not significantly different among the studied variables. Receiver operating characteristic curve cut-off values for NLR, PLR, and MLR were able to differentiate distant metastasis from lymph node metastasis (NLR>1.93: 73.3% sensitivity and 58.7% specificity, PLR>124.34: 86.7% sensitivity and 69.2% specificity, MLR>0.21: 80% sensitivity and 45.2% specificity). CONCLUSION: Cut-off values of NLR, PLR, and MLR differentiated distant metastasis from lymph node metastasis with good sensitivity and accuracy. PLR was associated with disease-free status and it was higher in DTC patients with distant metastasis, persistent disease, and disease-related death. MLR was a risk factor for active disease.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease is more frequent in postmenopausal women. Atherosclerosis is associated with inflammation and the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a marker of inflammation whose behavior in postmenopause is unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY: To know the relationship of the NLR with cardiovascular risk markers in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Premenopausal and postmenopausal women were studied, in all of them a complete hemogram and the NLR, platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were calculated, also glucose and lipids levels were measured. In all of them subcutaneous and visceral fat, carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), epicardial fat were measured by ultrasound Also baseline and and after flow-mediated stimulus the arterial diameter, the pulsatility index and the resistive index of the brachial artery were measured by ultrasound. The results are reported with medians and intervals, Mann-Whitney U and Spearman correlation analysis were performed. RESULTS: Eighty two patients were recruited, 41 premenopausal and 41 postmenopausal. When comparing both groups there was no difference in glucose, lipids, NLR, PLR, carotid IMT, epicardial fat, subcutaneous fat, visceral fat or Doppler parameters of the brachial artery. CONCLUSION: NLR was not different between premenopausal and postmenopausal women but abnormal PLR was greater in those postmenopausal with vasomotor symptoms.

Abstract Introduction Otosclerosis is an idiopathic disease characterized by new bone formation in foci of the human otic capsule. It is more common in Caucasian populations; affecting females twice as often as males. Its etiopathogenesis has not yet been fully elucidated. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between otosclerosis and white blood cell and thrombocyte counts, mean platelet volume, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, and the platelet lymphocyte ratio. Methods This retrospective case-control study was conducted in the outpatient clinic Mustafa Kemal University, in the department of otolaryngology, between 2015 and 2018. A total of 30 patients with an established diagnosis of otosclerosis were compared to a control group of 30 healthy subjects, matched for age, gender and body mass index. The white blood cell, thrombocyte, mean platelet volume, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio and platelet lymphocyte ratio values were calculated for all participants. Results There was no statistically significant difference between the groups with respect to age, gender, or body mass index, or for the mean neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, platelet lymphocyte ratio, white blood cell, or thrombocyte values (p > 0.05). A statistically significant difference was determined between the groups for the mean platelet volume values. The mean platelet volume values were lower in the otosclerotic patients (p = 0.047). Conclusion These results show that neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, platelet lymphocyte ratio, white blood cell and thrombocytes should not be used to predict otosclerosis, but suggest that mean platelet volume may be a negative predictive marker.
Resumo Introdução A otosclerose é uma doença idiopática caracterizada por neoformação óssea em focos da cápsula ótica humana. É mais comum em populações caucasianas, afeta o sexo feminino numa taxa 2 vezes maior do que o masculino. A etiopatogenia ainda não foi totalmente elucidada. Objetivo Investigar a relação entre otosclerose e taxa de glóbulos brancos, plaquetas, volume plaquetário médio, relação neutrófilos-linfócitos e relação plaquetas-linfócitos. Método Estudo retrospectivo de caso-controle feito no ambulatório da Mustafa Kemal University, Departamento de Otorrinolaringologia, entre 2015 e 2018. Foram comparados 30 pacientes com diagnóstico estabelecido de otosclerose com um grupo controle de 30 indivíduos saudáveis, pareados por idade, sexo e índice de massa corpórea. Os valores de glóbulos brancos, plaquetas, volume plaquetário médio, relação neutrófilos-linfócitos e relação plaquetas/linfócitos foram calculados para todos os participantes. Resultados Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos em relação a idade, sexo ou índice de massa corpórea, ou em relação aos valores médios de relação neutrófilos-linfócitos, relação plaquetas/linfócitos, valores de glóbulos brancos e plaquetas (p > 0,05). Uma diferença estatisticamente significante foi observada entre os grupos em termos de valores médios de volume plaquetário médio. Os valores de volume plaquetário médio foram menores nos pacientes com otosclerose (p = 0,047). Conclusão A relação plaquetas/linfócitos, a relação plaquetas/linfócitos, os valores de glóbulos brancos e plaquetas não podem ser usados para predizer a otosclerose, mas sugerem que o volume plaquetário médio possa ser um marcador preditivo negativo.

Abstract Background There is growing evidence of subclinical inflammation in mental disorders. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate frequency of symptoms of catatonia and the newly diagnosed subclinical inflammatory markers which are neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte (PLR), monocyte/lymphocyte (MLR) ratios in catatonia patients due to mental disorders. Methods: Patients who were admitted to psychiatry clinic with the diagnosis of catatonia according to DSM 5 in the last two years and equal number of control group were included in this retrospective study. Univariate analysis of covariance controlled for possible confounders was used to compare NLR, PLR, MLR ratios between patients and the control group. Results A total of 34 catatonia patients and 34 healthy controls were included in the study. Patients' mean age was 30.88 + 13.4. NLR value was significantly higher in the patient group than control group. There was no significant difference between the patients and control group according to PLR, MLR values. Discussion The presence of subclinical inflammation in catatonic syndrome due to mental disorders should be considered. Subclinical inflammation that was observed in numerous mental disorders continues in catatonia due to mental disorders. Large-scale studies are needed to determine the role of inflammation in catatonia.

Abstract Background: The neutrophil/ lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have the potential to be inflammatory markers that reflect the activity of many inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the NLR and PLR as potential markers of disease activity in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Methods: The study involved 132 patients with ankylosing spondylitis and 81 healthy controls matched in terms of age and gender. Their sociodemographic data, disease activity scores using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and white blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte and platelet counts were recorded. The patients with ankylosing spondylitis were further divided according to their BASDAI scores into patients with inactive disease (BASDAI < 4) and patients with active disease (BASDAI ≥4). The correlations between the NLR, PLR and disease activity were analysed. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the NLR and PLR between the active and inactive ankylosing spondylitis patients (2.31 ± 1.23 vs. 1.77 ± 0.73, p = 0.002), (142.04 ± 70.98 vs. 119.24 ± 32.49, p < 0.001, respectively). However, there was no significant difference in both the NLR and PLR between the healthy control group and ankylosing spondylitis patients (p > 0.05). In addition, the PLR was significantly higher in both the active and inactive groups compared to those in the healthy control group (142.04 ± 70.98 vs. 99.32 ± 33.97, p = 0.014), (119.24 ± 32.49 vs. 99.32 ± 33.97, p = 0.019). The BASDAI scores were positively correlated with the PLR (r = 0.219, p = 0.012) and the NLR, but they were not statistically significant with the later (r = 0.170, p = 0.051). Based on the ROC curve, the best NLR cut-off value for predicting severe disease activity in ankylosing spondylitis patients was 1.66, with a sensitivity of 61.8% and a specificity of 50.6%, whereas the best PLR cut-off value was 95.9, with a sensitivity of 70.9% and a specificity of 55.5%. Conclusion: The PLR may be used as a useful marker in the assessment and monitoring of disease activity in AS together with acute phase reactants such as the ESR.

PURPOSE: Recently neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been reported to be inflammatory parameters that confer poorer outcome in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCPRPC). However, these ratios have not been analyzed in patients treated with abiraterone acetate. We explored the relationship between different values of PLR and NLR and survival in mCPRCP treated with abiraterone and their possible relation with a prostate specific antigen (PSA) response. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 101 patients with mCRPC treated with abiraterone from January of 2012 to November of 2015 in two different hospitals. A cut-off value of 5 for NLR and 150 for PLR were used to compare survival by Kaplan-Meier method. Moreover, an association between these cut-off values and the PSA response was analyzed by a χ 2 test. RESULTS: In the case of NLR, the median DFS were 12, 1 months for NLR <5 and 7 months for NLR ≥5, p = 0.061. The median OS were 23.9 months for NLR <5 and 16.3 months for NLR ≥5, p = 0.046. In the case of PLR, the median DFS were 11.8 months for PLR <150 and 10.6 months for PLR ≥150, p = 0.549. The median OS were 27.4 months for PLR <150 and 15.9 months for PLR ≥150, p = 0.005. It was not observed a correlation between the different cut-off values of PLR or NLR and a PSA response ≥25% (p = 0.31). CONCLUSIONS: It is shown a better prognostic relationship between PLR and NLR low values and OS that is statistically significant in mCPRC patients treated with abiraterone. Furthermore, it was not shown a relation between PLR and NLR values and PSA response.

PURPOSE: Proinflammatory markers, including neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), are associated with many aspects of different malignancies. The aim of this study was to assess the associations of NLR and PLR with estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) expression in locally advanced breast cancer patients and their changes after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Whether these parameters were predictive for the response to NAC in breast cancer patients was also evaluated. METHODS: 132 Female primary locally advanced breast cancer patients treated with either ET (epirubicin-docetaxel), TEC (docetaxel-epirubicin-cyclophosphamide), or CEF (cyclophosphamide-epirubicin-fluorouracil) as NAC were retrospectively studied. NLR and PLR were calculated from peripheral blood cell count and their optimal cutoff levels were determined by receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS: The proportion of ER-positive breast cancers before NAC was higher both in NLRlow (<2.05) group and PLRlow group (<159.01). Changes in ER or PR expression level or status were observed in some patients. The alterations of NLR and PLR after NAC correlated with chemotherapy regimens, and elevated PLR was found. The patients with low pretreatment NLR (<1.67) or PLR (<151.27) had better responses to NAC than those with high NLR (≥1.67, 67.3 vs. 47.1%, P < 0.05) or PLR (≥151.27, 64.0 vs. 45.1%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The patients with low pretreatment NLR (<2.05) or PLR (<159.01) had higher ER expression. Changes in ER and PR expression status or level occured following NAC. Elevated PLR was found aft-NAC. Pretreatment NLR and PLR may be important predictive indicators for NAC response in breast cancer patients.
