RESUMEN

Objectives: Cold snare polypectomy (CSP) is widely performed for small colorectal polyps. However, small colorectal polyps sometimes include high-grade adenomas or carcinomas that require endoscopic resection with electrocautery. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel resection technique, hot snare polypectomy with low-power pure-cut current (LPPC-HSP) for small colorectal polyps, compared with CSP and conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). Methods: Records of patients who underwent CSP, EMR, or LPPC-HSP for nonpedunculated colorectal polyps less than 10 mm between April 2021 and March 2022 were retrospectively evaluated. We analyzed and compared the treatment outcomes of CSP and EMR with those of LPPC-HSP using propensity score matching. Results: After propensity score matching of 396 pairs, an analysis of CSP and LPPC-HSP indicated that LPPC-HSP had a significantly higher R0 resection rate (84% vs. 68%; p < 0.01). Delayed bleeding was observed in only two cases treated with CSP before matching. Perforation was not observed with either treatment. After propensity score matching of 176 pairs, an analysis of EMR and LPPC-HSP indicated that their en bloc and R0 resection rates were not significantly different (99.4% vs. 100%, p = 1.00; 79% vs. 81%, p = 0.79). Delayed bleeding and perforation were not observed with either treatment. Conclusions: The safety of LPPC-HSP was comparable to that of CSP. The treatment outcomes of LPPC-HSP were comparable to those of conventional EMR for small polyps. These results suggest that this technique is a safe and effective treatment for nonpedunculated polyps less than 10 mm.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel method called 'three variable optimization' that entails a process of doing just one calculation to zero out the mean prediction error of an entire dataset (regardless of size), using only 3 variables: 1) the constant used, 2) the average intraocular lens (IOL) power and 3) the average PE. DESIGN: Development, evaluation, and testing of a method to optimize personal IOL constants. METHODS: A dataset of 876 eyes was used as a training set, and another dataset of 1,079 eyes was used to test the method. The Barrett Universal II, Cooke K6, Haigis, RBF 3.0, Hoffer Q, Holladay 1, Holladay 2, SRK/T and T2 were analyzed. The same dataset was also divided into 3 subgroups (short, medium and long eyes). The three variable optimization process was applied to each dataset and subset, and the obtained optimized constants were then used to obtain the mean PE of each dataset. We then compared those results with those obtained by zeroing out the mean PE in the classical method. RESULTS: The three variable optimization showed similar results to classical optimization with less data needed to optimize and no clinically significant difference. Dividing the dataset into subsets of short, medium and long eyes, also shows that the method is useful even in those situations. Finally, the method was tested in multiple formulas and it was able to reduce the PE with no clinical significant difference from classical optimization. CONCLUSION: This method could then be applied by surgeons to optimize their constants by reducing the mean prediction error to zero without prior technical knowledge and it is available online for free at http://wwww.ioloptimization.com.

Escalating energy demands of self-independent on-skin/wearable electronics impose challenges on corresponding power sources to offer greater power density, permeability, and stretchability. Here, a high-efficient breathable and stretchable monolithic hybrid triboelectric-piezoelectric-electromagnetic nanogenerator-based electronic skin (TPEG-skin) is reported via sandwiching a liquid metal mesh with two-layer topological insulator-piezoelectric polymer composite nanofibers. TPEG-skin concurrently extracts biomechanical energy (from body motions) and electromagnetic radiations (from adjacent appliances), operating as epidermal power sources and whole-body self-powered sensors. Topological insulators with conductive surface states supply notably enhanced triboelectric and piezoelectric effects, endowing TPEG-skin with a 288 V output voltage (10 N, 4 Hz), ∼3 times that of state-of-the-art devices. Liquid metal meshes serve as breathable electrodes and extract ambient electromagnetic pollution (±60 V, ±1.6 µA cm-2). TPEG-skin implements self-powered physiological and body motion monitoring and system-level human-machine interactions. This study provides compatible energy strategies for on-skin/wearable electronics with high power density, monolithic device integration, and multifunctionality.

BACKGROUND: Health system responsiveness to public priorities and needs is a broad, multi-faceted and complex health system goal thought to be important in promoting inclusivity and reducing system inequity in participation. Power dynamics underlie the complexity of responsiveness but are rarely considered. This paper presents an analysis of various manifestations of power within the responsiveness practices of Health Facility Committees (HFCs) and Sub-county Health Management Teams (SCHMTs) operating at the subnational level in Kenya. Kenyan policy documents identify responsiveness as an important policy goal. METHODS: Our analysis draws on qualitative data (35 interviews with health managers and local politicians, four focus group discussions with HFC members, observations of SCHMT meetings, and document review) from a study conducted at the Kenyan Coast. We applied a combination of two power frameworks to interpret our findings: Gaventa's power cube and Long's actor interface analysis. RESULTS: We observed a weakly responsive health system in which system-wide and equity in responsiveness were frequently undermined by varied forms and practices of power. The public were commonly dominated in their interactions with other health system actors: invisible and hidden power interacted to limit their sharing of feedback; while the visible power of organisational hierarchy constrained HFCs' and SCHMTs' capacity both to support public feedback mechanisms and to respond to concerns raised. These power practices were underpinned by positional power relationships, personal characteristics, and world views. Nonetheless, HFCs, SCHMTs and the public creatively exercised some power to influence responsiveness, for example through collaborations with political actors. However, most resulting responses were unsustainable, and sometimes undermined equity as politicians sought unfair advantage for their constituents. CONCLUSION: Our findings illuminate the structures and mechanisms that contribute to weak health system responsiveness even in contexts where it is prioritised in policy documents. Supporting inclusion and participation of the public in feedback mechanisms can strengthen receipt of public feedback; however, measures to enhance public agency to participate are also needed. In addition, an organisational environment and culture that empowers health managers to respond to public inputs is required.

OBJECTIVE: To establish age and gender-specific paediatric and adult reference data for muscle function parameters assessed using Jumping Mechanography in the Indian population. METHODS: 2056 healthy individuals (1068 males), aged 5 to 60 years, performed 2 tests on a force platform (Leonardo Mechanograph, Novotec). Maximum power (Pmax) was assessed by single two legged jump and maximum force (Fmax) by multiple one legged hopping. LMS method was used to generate age and gender-specific reference curves for 5 - 20y group and mean ± SD and median ± IQR are presented for 21 - 60y group. RESULTS: In 5 - 20y group, Pmax and Fmax increased with age while in 21 - 60y group, the parameters declined with age. Females had lower Pmax values than males, consistently through all age groups. In children <15y, there were no intergender differences in Fmax, however, in further age groups, females had lower Fmax (p<0.001). Our participants showed lower Pmax and Fmax when compared with machine reference data based on German population (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: We present ethnicity-specific reference values for muscle function by Jumping Mechanography. These values are intended to help in clinical assessment of muscle function of Indian population and to identify those at risk of poor muscle function.

In this paper, a comprehensive exploration is undertaken to elucidate the utilization of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) within the biomedical domain. The investigation delves into the experimentally validated advantages of SNNs in comparison to alternative models like LSTM, while also critically examining the inherent limitations of SNN classifiers or algorithms. SNNs exhibit distinctive advantages that render them particularly apt for targeted applications within the biomedical field. Over time, SNNs have undergone extensive scrutiny in realms such as neuromorphic processing, Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), and Disease Diagnosis. Notably, SNNs demonstrate a remarkable affinity for the processing and analysis of biomedical signals, including but not limited to electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyography (EMG), and electrocardiogram (ECG) data. This paper initiates its exploration by introducing some of the biomedical applications of EMG, such as the classification of hand gestures and motion decoding. Subsequently, the focus extends to the applications of SNNs in the analysis of EEG and ECG signals. Moreover, the paper delves into the diverse applications of SNNs in specific anatomical regions, such as the eyes and noses. In the final sections, the paper culminates with a comprehensive analysis of the field, offering insights into the advantages, disadvantages, challenges, and opportunities introduced by various SNN models in the realm of healthcare and biomedical domains. This holistic examination provides a nuanced perspective on the potential transformative impact of SNN across a spectrum of applications within the biomedical landscape.

Developing a reliable power grid and investing in non-conventional renewable energy resources pose problems for low- and medium-income countries. Frequently, maintaining a robust power grid infrastructure can present challenges in terms of reliability, resilience, and flexibility. This article presents a methodology for improving power flexibility in susceptible power systems through the utilization of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The methodology entails the examination of power stability, operating conditions, and security criteria in order to identify suitable locations for storage allocation. A study was conducted utilizing the Electrical Transient and Analysis Program (ETAP®) software to simulate the Central American power transmission grid. The results of the study indicate that including storage systems to offer virtual inertia and backup during emergency situations is a recommended strategy for mitigating potential challenges. The study suggests that applying specific criteria for allocation and sizing at critical points in sensitive systems can enhance power transfer flexibility, eliminating potential constraints. The Central American electrical Power System, which faces power transfer limitations, is well-suited for BESS. In severe contingencies, such as when the system frequency drops to 58.75 Hz and power transfer between Mexico and Central America exceeds 300 MW with voltage levels below 0.97 pu, BESS can help mitigate these issues. The solution involves deploying BESS both centrally and distributively. Results show decreased instability, with power increases not exceeding 300 MW for more than 11 study cycles in all scenarios. The approach includes a BESS with an installed capacity of 1,060 MWh/160 MW and a virtual inertia of H=6s.

The limited industrial use of indigenous varieties of native potatoes has caused a decrease in its cultivation, restricting it to the self-consumption of the Andean population. The present study analyzed the physicochemical, thermal, and structural properties of the starches extracted from four of these varieties Aq'hu Pukucho, Yurakk Kkachun Wakkachi, Yurac Anca, and Huarmi Mallco, as a potential source of be used in industries such as food, pharmaceutical and, bioplastics. The percentage yield in wet extraction ranged between 14.53 and 20.26 %. The luminosity L* and whiteness index (WI) values were observed in ranges of 90.75-92.71 and 90.05-91.50, respectively. The Finding revealed various techno-functional properties, since the level of amylose varied between 36.29 and 43.97 %, an average zeta potential of -22 mV, and a maximum viscosity between 19,450-14,583 cP. The starches showed consistent thermal behavior since the TGA curves showed three stages with gelatinization temperatures that ranged between 54.9 and 59.75 °C, an enthalpy of 3.60-6.62 J/g, and various shapes of particles such as circular, elliptical, and oval. In conclusion, the relationships between variables such as water absorption index, swelling power, viscosity, crystallinity, enthalpy, and gelatinization temperature reveal different characteristics of each type of starch, which can influence its use.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the photothermal effects of a subdermal high-power diode laser at a wavelength (λ) of 1470 nm in the skin of rats. Twenty male Wistar rats were used, divided into 2 groups: placebo laser (PL) and active laser (AL). A high-power diode laser equipment was applied to 5 subdermal vectors on the animal's back region. The results demonstrated that active laser animals showed a better arrangement of collagen fiber bands, an increase in the thickness of the dermis and the number of vessels. Furthermore, animals treated with active laser showed an increased immunoexpression of TGF-ß and VEGF compared to the placebo. The present work demonstrated that the subdermal high-power diode laser increases the vascularization and the expression of factors that enhance skin regeneration and may be promising resource in the esthetic and dermatology clinical treatment of skin rejuvenation.

This paper offers a critical discussion of the evolution and impact of an international nursing writing group, developed to support nursing faculty and academics globally. Amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the writing group adapted and thrived online with a flattened power structure, and shared influence and acknowledgment of mutual capacity and contribution. The writing group attracted participants from various countries, with international members enriching collaboration, and fostering a global network of nursing scholars. By embracing diverse perspectives and promoting nonpatriarchal approaches to scholarly writing, the International Writing Group became a unique and valuable platform for academic growth and cross-cultural exchange in nursing.

Fault detection, classification, and location prediction are crucial for maintaining the stability and reliability of modern power systems, reducing economic losses, and enhancing system protection sensitivity. This paper presents a novel Hierarchical Deep Learning Approach (HDLA) for accurate and efficient fault diagnosis in transmission lines. HDLA leverages two-stage transformer-based classification and regression models to perform Fault Detection (FD), Fault Type Classification (FTC), and Fault Location Prediction (FLP) directly from synchronized raw three-phase current and voltage samples. By bypassing the need for feature extraction, HDLA significantly reduces computational complexity while achieving superior performance compared to existing deep learning methods. The efficacy of HDLA is validated on a comprehensive dataset encompassing various fault scenarios with diverse types, locations, resistances, inception angles, and noise levels. The results demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score metrics for classification, and Mean Absolute Errors (MAEs) and Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs) for prediction, showcasing the effectiveness of HDLA for real-time fault diagnosis in power systems.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) projects are pivotal in addressing climate change and fostering a sustainable energy future. However, the complex landscape of renewable energy investments, characterized by high upfront costs, market uncertainties, and evolving technologies, demands innovative evaluation methods. The Real Options Approach has emerged as a powerful tool, offering strategic flexibility in decision-making under uncertainty. This paper comprehensively analyzes the application of real options for evaluating solar photovoltaic projects in 2008-2023. Analysis of document descriptors (author keywords, index keywords, and noun phrases extracted from titles and abstracts) reveals that the dominant research topics in the last ten years (2014-2023) include investment optimization, strategic analysis, energy policy, optimization of energy generation and investments in wind energy. These descriptors are used to analyze the evolution of research interests on a two-year basis and reveal the yearly evolution of the research topics. Finally, the concept of emergence is used to unveil emerging research trends, providing valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the renewable energy sector. Ultimately, this work contributes to a deeper understanding of how real options analysis empowers decision-makers to make informed choices in advancing clean and sustainable energy solutions.

Accurately estimating load is essential for effective electric distribution planning, assets management, precise power flow predictions, accurate power losses calculations, and efficient integration of distributed energy resources. This work describes a dataset that was generated using Matlab and OpenDSS to produce several simulations in which load estimation is performed using a direct search method called pattern search. These simulations were conducted on three typical distribution feeders (IEEE 13-bus, 37-bus, and 123-bus) that support studies in distribution planning, assets management, power flow predictions, power losses calculations, and distributed resource integration. The dataset includes individual demand profiles of residential, commercial, and industrial consumers specified for the three distribution feeders, comprising 96 distinct scenarios. An optimization method was developed to obtain the dataset, which employs the pattern search technique to estimate loads through the optimization of objective functions and specified constraints. The load estimation quality was assessed for all three feeders, utilizing estimation quality indices proposed by the authors. These indices evaluated both the initial and proposed load estimation methods across the developed scenarios. Furthermore, the data provided in this article can be utilized for comparison with future load estimation studies, particularly regarding the quality of the method's results.

The debt collection industry in the United States has grown in tandem with rising indebtedness. Prior research on debt and mental health mainly treats debt as a resource and liability rather than a power relationship between creditors and debtors. We study the mental health consequences of debt collection pressure using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-1997 Cohort (N = 7,236). Drawing on stress theory and health power resources theory, we posit collection pressure as a relational stressor that undermines well-being through negative interactions with debt collectors, financial strain, role strain, and stigma. We find that one of every four young adults in this cohort faced debt collection pressure by around age 40, with higher rates among low-income and Black young adults. Individual fixed-effects and lagged dependent variable regression models indicate that debt collection pressure is associated with increased psychological distress, with more severe consequences among low-income young adults.

This study examines the effectiveness of the countries' health systems in the Horn of Africa region. It also investigates the perspectives of actors who have played an active role in health affairs in Somalia carried out by Türkiye. Using the Data Envelopment Analysis and Malmquist Total Factor Efficiency Analysis, we investigated the effectiveness of the health systems and improvements made throughout the years. In the countries of interest, efficiency levels and average total factor productivity showed positive and/or negative trends between 2000 and 2020. Kenya showed a marked performance in achieving improved average total factor productivity thanks to the effective use of current technology in health, success in integrating new technologies into the health system, and a high potential to produce more output despite insufficient existing inputs. The remaining countries lagged behind in improving their production factors. Since 2014, Türkiye has provided health services in Somalia through health diplomacy and conducted medical examinations for numerous patients in a well-equipped hospital.


Cette étude examine l'efficacité des systèmes de santé des pays de la région de la Corne de l'Afrique. Il étudie également les perspectives des acteurs qui ont joué un rôle actif dans les affaires de santé en Somalie menées par Türkiye. En utilisant l'analyse de l'enveloppe des données et l'analyses d'efficacité des facteurs totales de Malmquist, nous avons étudié l'efficience des systèmes de santé et les améliorations apportées au cours des années. Dans les pays intéressés, les niveaux d'efficacité et la productivité totale moyenne du facteur ont montré des tendances positives et/ou négatives entre 2000 et 2020. Le Kenya a fait preuve d'une performance marquée dans l'amélioration de la productivité totale moyenne du facteur grâce à l'utilisation efficace de la technologie actuelle dans le domaine de la santé, au succès de l'intégration de nouvelles technologies dans le système de santé et au potentiel élevé de produire plus de produits malgré l'insuffisance des produits existants. Les autres pays sont en retard dans l'amélioration de leurs facteurs de production. Depuis 2014, Türkiye a fourni des services de santé en Somalie par le biais de la diplomatie de santé et a effectué des examens médicaux pour de nombreux patients dans un hôpital bien équipé.

Introduction: Post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) cannot be clearly distinguished from and may be explained in large by warm-up effects. To disentangle PAPE from a systemic warm-up effect, we conducted three randomized crossover trials (RCT). Methods: Each RCT consisted of a familiarization/one-repetition-maximum (1RM) assessment session followed by two interventional sessions (random order). In Study I, 18 participants (age: 26 ± 4 years; height: 1.84 ± 0.06 m; mass: 83.7 ± 8.7 kg; Squat-1RM: 146 ± 19 kg) performed either a 3-s isometric squat at 130%1RM or a 6-s isometric squat at 65%1RM. In Study II, 28 participants (11 female; age: 23 ± 3 years; height: 1.77 ± 0.08 m; mass: 76.5 ± 10.4 kg; Squat-1RM: 109 ± 38 kg) completed either Squat (3 × 3 repetitions, 85%1RM) or local electromyostimulation of the quadriceps muscle (85% of individual pain threshold). In Study III, 20 participants (6 female, age: 25.0 ± 3.5 years, mass: 78.5 ± 15.8 kg, height: 1.75 ± 0.08 m; SQ-1RM: 114 ± 33 kg, chest-press-1RM: 74 ± 29 kg) performed either squats or chest press (4 repetitions, 80%1RM). Counter-Movement-Jump height (CMJ) was assessed after a general (PRE) and/or muscle-specific warm-up (POST_WU) and for up to 11 min after the PAPE protocols. To identify possible differences in CMJ between the experimental conditions, mixed-design ANOVA models were used for each study individually, with condition and time modelled as fixed effects, while participants were included as a random effect blocking factor. The level of statistical significance was set at α = 5%. Results: In studies I and II, significant effects for time (p < 0.05, ωp 2 = 0.06 and p < 0.001, ωp 2 = 0.43) were found with the highest CMJ compared to all other time points at PRE (≤8.2 ± 4.6%, standardized mean difference: ≤0.39), regardless of condition. In study III, no significant effects were observed. Discussion: Thus, PAPE protocols do not further improve jumping performance compared to a general and muscle-specific traditional warm-up. Prior to tasks requiring explosive strength, general and sport-specific warm-up strategies should be used.

Microgrids offer an optimistic solution for delivering electricity to remote regions and incorporating renewable energy into existing power systems. However, the energy balance between generation and consumption remains a significant challenge in microgrid setups. This research presents an adaptive energy management approach for grid-interactive microgrids. The DC microgrid is established by combining solar PV with a battery-supercapacitor (SC) hybrid energy storage system (HESS). The proposed approach integrates the frequency separation strategy with a rule-based algorithm to ensure optimal power sharing among sources while maintaining the safe operation of storage units. Specifically, the battery meets steady-state energy demands, the SC addresses transient power requirements, and the grid support is tailored to system needs. The method employs the dq reference frame technique to control the grid inverter (VSC). The key merits include efficient power allocation, fast regulation of the DC link voltage irrespective of load or generation variations, seamless transition between scenarios, and introduction of a straightforward battery state of charge (SOC)-based coefficient for allocating power between the battery and the grid while enhancing the power quality within the grid. Moreover, safety measures prevent the SC from overcharging, the battery from high current, overcharging, and deep discharging, potentially extending their lifespan. Validation and implementation of the method are conducted using MATLAB/Simulink.

Requiem sharks (genus Carcharhinus) have previously been reported to form large aggregations around marine infrastructures in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. While this behaviour may offer fitness advantages at the individual level, the implications of extended residency at human-altered habitats for population persistence have yet to be assessed. In this work, we investigated the phylogeographic and demographic composition of sharks near a coal-fired power and desalination station in Israel. Our aim was to infer habitat use and the mechanisms underlying the aggregation behaviour, and to highlight potential conservation impacts. We sampled, measured, and released 70 individuals between 2016 and 2022 to assess genetic variability within the cytochrome C oxidase I (COI) region and to analyse the aggregation's structure based on the sharks' size and sex distribution. In addition, we performed meristic counts on a reference specimen collected dead at another power station in Israel to supplement species identification using the abovementioned techniques. Our findings indicate size-based sex segregation of adult female dusky and male sandbar sharks (Carcharhinus obscurus and Carcharhinus plumbeus, respectively), with each species comprising two COI haplotypes. In the dusky shark, one haplotype corresponded to an Indo-Pacific lineage, and the other matched an Atlantic lineage. In the sandbar shark, we observed a haplotype previously sampled in the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Northwest Indian Ocean, and South Africa, and another haplotype that was unique to our study site and genetically closer to the former than to sequences sampled in other ocean basins. This study provides the first indication of sympatric aggregation amongst phylogeographically distinct dusky and sandbar shark lineages, suggesting that human-altered habitats in the eastern Mediterranean Sea may influence the distribution of these species. Based on the observed segregation pattern, we conclude that the site does not function as a nursery, parturition, or mating area, and discuss other plausible explanations that warrant further research. Finally, we highlight important directions for future research and the implications of our findings for management and conservation.

Motor imagery (MI) requires the mental representation of the body, obtained by integrating exteroceptive and interoceptive information. This study aimed to investigate the role of interoceptive sensitivity (IS) in MI performed through visual and kinesthetic modalities by participants with low (lows, N = 26; SHSS: A, M + SD: 1.00 + 1.52), medium (mediums, N = 11; SHSS: A, 6.00 + 0.77) and high hypnotizability scores (highs, N = 16; SHSS:A, 9.75 + 1.24), as measured by the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale: Form A. The three groups displayed different MI abilities and IS levels. The efficacy of MI was measured using the chronometric index and self-reported experience, while IS was measured using the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) questionnaire. Alpha and beta power spectrum densities (PSDs) were extracted from the EEG signals acquired during baseline, actual movement and visually and kinesthetically imagined movements. The chronometric indices do not reveal significant differences between groups and imagery modalities. The self-report MI efficacy indicates better kinesthetic imagery in highs and mediums than in lows, and no modality difference among lows. The MAIA dimensions sustain the differences in subjective experience and almost all the EEG differences. The latter are slightly different in highs, mediums and lows. This is the first report of the major role played by IS in MI and strongly supports the theory of embodied cognition.

The analysis of protein fold usage, similar to codon usage, offers profound insights into the evolution of biological systems and the origins of modern proteomes. While previous studies have examined fold distribution in modern genomes, our study focuses on the comparative distribution and usage of protein folds in ribosomes across bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. We identify the prevalence of certain 'super-ribosome folds,' such as the OB fold in bacteria and the SH3 domain in archaea and eukaryotes. The observed protein fold distribution in the ribosomes announces the future power-law distribution where only a few folds are highly prevalent, and most are rare. Additionally, we highlight the presence of three copies of proto-Rossmann folds in ribosomes across all kingdoms, showing its ancient and fundamental role in ribosomal structure and function. Our study also explores early mechanisms of molecular convergence, where different protein folds bind equivalent ribosomal RNA structures in ribosomes across different kingdoms. This comparative analysis enhances our understanding of ribosomal evolution, particularly the distinct evolutionary paths of the large and small subunits, and underscores the complex interplay between RNA and protein components in the transition from the RNA world to modern cellular life. Transcending the concept of folds also makes it possible to group a large number of ribosomal proteins into five categories of urfolds or metafolds, which could attest to their ancestral character and common origins. This work also demonstrates that the gradual acquisition of extensions by simple but ordered folds constitutes an inexorable evolutionary mechanism. This observation supports the idea that simple but structured ribosomal proteins preceded the development of their disordered extensions.
