RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aimed to examine the prevalence of myopic eyes over 11 years (2008-2018) in a private clinic and a public assistance service. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 6332 individuals (12,664 eyes) between 5 and 25 years old, seen at a private clinic-CEMO (2,663 individuals) and a public service-HOIP (3,669 individuals) from 2008 to 2018. We evaluated the prevalence of myopic eyes (EE ≤-0.50) and high myopic eyes (EE ≤-6.00). Results: Sex and services did not show statistical differences. The variation in the prevalence of myopic and high myopic eyes showed a random pattern during the study period (this prevalence could not be increased). Prevalences ranged from 20.7% (in 2017) to 32.4% (in 2015) for myopic eyes and from 1.6% (in 2009 and 2016) to 3.3% (in 2015) for eyes with high myopia. The prevalence of myopia showed a statistically significant increase based on the age group. Conclusion: The prevalence of myopic eyes did not increase in our study. The mean prevalence of myopic eyes was similar in the private clinic and public service.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Purpose: Although Brazil has a high prevalence of retinoblastoma, there is a lack of epidemiological data on the disease. Thus, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the epidemiological profile of patients diagnosed with retinoblastoma in the ophthalmology department of a pediatric tertiary referral hospital in Ceara, Brazil. Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted by retrospectively analyzing the clinical and socioeconomic data from the medical records of pediatric patients followed-up at the hospital between 2007 and 2021. Retinoblastoma was diagnosed on the basis of a fundoscopic or histopathologic examination. Results: The data of 105 patients were included in the study, and the mean patient age at the time of diagnosis was 1.7 years. Most of the patients were women (50.5%) and hailed from rural areas (57.4%), which was associated with a higher tumor stage. Of the 150 patients, 57.1% initially presented with leukocoria. Ocular hyperemia was associated with more advanced stages of retinoblastoma (p=0.004). Bilateral involvement was observed in 25.7% of the patients and at a significantly younger age (p=0.009). The presence of retinal detachment, vascularized lesions, and vitreous seeds significantly increased the likelihood of requiring enucleation. Discussion: This study presents an epidemiological description of retinoblastoma in Brazil, which highlights the significance of early detection. Delayed diagnosis is associated with a poorer visual prognosis and higher mortality rate, particularly in patients with unilateral disease. Risk factors for a more severe disease were retinal detachment, vascularized lesions, and vitreous seeds. The correlation between histopathological features and clinical outcomes was limited. Conclusion: Further studies are required to assess the influence of ocular hyperemia, fundoscopic assessment, and histopathologic findings on the prognosis of retinoblastoma. Moreover, it is critical to devise interventions to reduce the time-to-diagnosis in rural areas.

RESUMEN

Elephantiasis, also known as lymphatic filariasis (LF), is a debilitating condition characterized by the thickening of the skin and muscles, primarily affecting the limbs, genitalia, and female breasts. Lymphatic filariasis is a major global health concern, affecting approximately 120 million people worldwide and having a significant impact on people's quality of life, mobility, and socio-economic status. Although LF is endemic in many parts of the world, including Africa, it is a neglected issue in Southern Africa, with little information available. According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 882.5 million people in 44 countries worldwide are at risk of contracting LF, making it the second most common vector-borne disease after malaria. The primary goal of this review was to assess the prevalence of elephantiasis in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. Lymphatic filariasis is endemic in four of the sixteen SADC countries, three countries have administered MDA to the population that required it and they are now under post-intervention surveillance, while LF is no longer a public health problem in Malawi. Global efforts to eliminate LF have been hampered by the non-availability of MDA in some SADC countries such as Angola, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Despite the implementation of mass drug administration programs, a review of the literature reveals gaps in knowledge about LF prevalence cases in SADC countries. Each country faces unique challenges and successes in combating LF due to varying levels of available data and healthcare infrastructure. Some SADC countries continue to bear the burden of LF-related diseases, necessitating ongoing disease prevention and elimination efforts. This review emphasizes the importance of ongoing research, data collection, and novel policies to combat the spread of elephantiasis disease in the SADC region and beyond.

RESUMEN

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is a rare genetic disease characterized by progressive cerebellar syndrome and macular degeneration. In a previous study, we clinically and genetically characterized a group of Mexican patients, which represented one of the largest cohorts of SCA7 patients worldwide and demonstrated that all patients had a unique genetic origin. Our laboratory developed a program for the diagnosis, medical care, and long-term follow-up of these patients living in Veracruz State, and in this report, we present an update to this research, covering 2013 to 2024. So far, we identified 172 SCA7 carriers, with a few cases outside Veracruz, and our data support that the length of the CAG repeat tract mainly determines disease severity and life expectancy, and accordingly, we define three different phenotypes, early-onset (EO), classical-onset (CO), and late-onset (LO), with EO patients showing the lowest life expectancy. Furthermore, we found that parental transmission of mutant alleles leads to increased CAG repeat instability, compared to maternal ones. Interestingly, a haplotype analysis revealed that patients outside Veracruz may have different genetic origins. In conclusion, longitudinal observations of SCA7 patients provide insight into the natural history of SCA7 and help to design strategies for diagnosis, genetic counseling, physical rehabilitation, and therapeutic alternatives.

RESUMEN

Background: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing worldwide, especially in developing countries, due to factors such as lifestyle changes and the rise of non-communicable diseases. Populations living in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas are subject to a higher burden of CKD. However, the burden of CKD on Brazilian Indigenous people, especially those undergoing an advanced urbanisation process, has not yet been described. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1715 Truká Indigenous adults from Cabrobó, Brazil. CKD was defined according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes guidelines classification as a urinary albumin/creatinine ratio ≥30 mg/g and/or an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Univariate and multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate factors associated with CKD. Odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to measure association. Findings: Out of the 1654 participants analysed (61 excluded due to missing data), the prevalence of CKD was 10% (95% CI, 8.6%-11.5%), with a higher prevalence in women compared to men (12.4% versus 6.9%, p < 0.001). The mean age was 40.5 years, with 55.6% being women. In univariate analysis, female sex (OR, 1.9; 95% CI, 1.3-2.7), age ≥60 years (OR, 4.6; 95% CI, 3.2-6.6), cardiovascular disease (OR, 2.1; 95% CI, 1.1-4.1), and dyslipidemia (OR, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.1-2.4) were identified as associated factors with CKD. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified age ≥60 years, female sex, and dyslipidemia as independently associated factors with CKD. Interpretation: The prevalence of CKD among Truká Indigenous adults analysed is high and affects a higher proportion of women. Our study found no association between hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and CKD risk, despite their high prevalence. These findings assist in developing early CKD detection strategies in Brazilian Indigenous communities, supporting disease treatment and prevention. Funding: National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq)-Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation of Brazil, and the Maria Emília Foundation.

RESUMEN

Aim: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is one of the most severe clinical forms of tuberculosis (TB). Since epidemiological studies can contribute to TB control, we conducted a review and meta-analysis of epidemiological publications of adults TBM cases in countries with high incidence of TB.Materials & methods: The search resulted in 11,855 articles, in which 21 ultimately were included in our review and 15 in our meta-analysis.Results: TBM mortality was 25% with death rates of 70% in Africa. The review showed different and non-concordant diagnostic techniques and treatment schemes. Conclusion: Adults living in the African region are at high risk of death from TBM, highlighting an urgent need of guidelines to support diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately, to reduce mortality.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease that mostly affects the lungs. It can also affect other organs. When TB affects the brain and spinal cord, it is called tuberculous meningitis (TBM). We looked to analyze the traits of the adults with TBM that live in countries with a high number of cases of TB. We searched scientific publications that studied these populations to find information that may help to control the disease. The death rate of TBM was 25%, reaching up to 70% in Africa. We found some disparities regarding diagnosis and treatment. Adults living in Africa have a higher risk of dying from TBM. We need guidelines about the diagnosis and treatment of TBM to help reduce TBM deaths in these countries.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To date, no data exist regarding the prevalence of integrase inhibitor (INSTI) resistance-associated mutations (HIVDRM) in HIV-infected pregnant women (HPW) in Latin America. We describe the prevalence and transmissibility of integrase HIVDRM in a historical cohort of INSTI-naïve HPW from Argentina (n=56) with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis was performed by HyDRA software for 20%, 10%, 5%, 2%, and 1% sensitivity thresholds. We calculated the mutational viral load for each INSTI-HIVDRM, considering those with >1000 c/mL as of high risk of transmissibility. RESULTS: The predominant HIV subtype was BF (78.5%). Major HIVDRM were not detected with the population sequencing 20% filter. With a 1% threshold, the prevalence increased to 8.9%; Y143C/S, E92G, E138K, and T66I mutations were found. The median (range) mutational load (expressed in c/mL) was: 355 (50.2-11705); with only 1 case >1000 c/mL Accessory mutations (G163R/K, T97A) were detected mostly with a 20% sensitivity threshold with an overall prevalence of 23.2%; the median (IQR) mutational load was: 23929 (4009-63158) c/mL; all of them above 1000 c/mL. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show evidence of the presence of major INSTI-HIVDRM as aleatory mutations and a high frequency of accessory mutations with potential transmissibility in HPW.

RESUMEN

Introduction. Efforts to understand the burden of antibiotic use in low- and middle-income countries such as Brazil are essential for developing strategies that are effective and appropriate in the context of endemic multidrug-resistant organisms.Aim. This study aims to determine antimicrobial-prescribing practices among patients hospitalized in intensive care units (ICUs) for adults in Brazil.Methodology. A 1-day point prevalence multicentre survey was conducted in 58 adult ICUs across the five regions of Brazil. The institutions were categorized according to their type and size. Detailed antimicrobial prescription data were prospectively provided to all patients hospitalized on the day of data collection.Results. A total of 620 patients were included in the study, of whom 63.9% were receiving at least one antimicrobial. Of these, 34.6% were treated for an infection, but only 39.9% of the cases were based on microbiological criteria. Empirical treatment was applied to 72.3% of the patients. Significant differences in antibiotic usage were observed across the different hospitals included in the study. Overall, treatment was most commonly directed towards pneumonia (51.8%) and bloodstream infections (29.6%). Glycopeptides (19.4%) and carbapenems (18.5%) were the most prescribed in teaching hospitals, while in non-teaching hospitals, carbapenems (17.8%) and broad-spectrum cephalosporins (16.8%) were most frequently used.Conclusion. Our study reveals alarming data on antibiotic use in adult ICUs in Brazil, with high frequencies of severe healthcare-associated infections acquired in these units, where patients are frequently subjected to empirical treatment.

Abstract Metabolic syndrome (MS) is associated with metabolic and inflammatory alterations that increase the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, based on insulin resistance. Diet, sedentary lifestyle, education and income distribution can influence the appearance of MS. The objective of the study was to know the prevalence of MS and associated cardiovascular risk factors in a vulnerable, adult and urban population, that voluntarily attends after diffusion campaign, to a primary care hospital in the city of San Luis, Argentina. In 451 subjects, 205 men and 246 women (45.5±12.4 years), personal, anthropometric and biomarker data were analysed: total cholesterol HDL cholesterol (HDL-c), LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, insulin, ultrasensitive C-reactive protein (usCRP), apolipoproteins A and B, uric acid and insulin surrogate indices. The MS was established using the harmonised definition of MS (2009). Eighty percent of the population did not complete formal education. Men were unemployed or in informal work (70%). A total of 51.4% of the population had the MS criteria (50.0% women and 53.1% men). Among the components of MS, the most frequent triad in women and men, were: decreased HDL-c, elevated waist circumference and hypertriglyceridemia. The prevalence of MS increased with age in men. Women with MS presented high levels of usCRP. Knowledge of the local prevalence of both obesity and MS would allow enable the assessment of the magnitude of the problem in each community, establish prevention and control measures, and compare it with other epidemiological realities.

RESUMEN

Objective: To determine the prevalence of gingival recessions in students of the faculty of odontology at Universidad de Los Andes and the factor associated with its presence. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a randomized stratified sampling was used to select the students. The sample included 311 undergraduate students evaluated between March and December 2022. The year spectrum was from 17 to 29 years old. Two calibrated examiners intra e interoperator completed a clinical evaluation with a periodontal probe, where the purpose was to diagnose gingival recessions and identify if there were any related factors such as smoking, braces, bruxism, marginal insertion frenulum, fine phenotype, and malposition. The total prevalence was described with each trust interval of 95%. The association between categorical variables was analyzed with the chi-square test, and the t-student test of the Mann-Whitney test analyzed the difference between continuous variables and recession prevalence. Results: 93,56% of the students presented at least one gingival recession. The highest prevalence related to teeth occurred in pieces 1.6, 3.4, 2.6, and 4.1, and the most severe were 3.3, 4.3, and 1.3. The most associated factor related to recessions was orthodontics, with a prevalence of 75,2%. Bruxism showed a positive association with the number of recessions, with a prevalence of 60,7%. Conclusions: Buccal gingival recessions were very prevalent in undergraduate students at the dental school of Universidad de los Andes during 2022, and they were strongly associated with the history of orthodontics.

Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de recesiones gingivales en alumnos de pregrado de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Los Andes, y los factores asociados a su presencia. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Limited access to health services and low educational levels are factors in the rural population that are associated with the development of oral pathologies. However, the specific risk indicators contributing to erosive tooth wear (ETW) in these populations remain unclear. The objective of this study was to identify risk indicators associated with the prevalence of erosive tooth wear (ETW) in schoolchildren aged 8-12 years from rural and urban areas in the State of Mexico. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in public schools in rural and urban areas. The prevalence of ETW was evaluated using the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE). The risk indicators studied were gastroesophageal reflux, vomiting, vitamin C, food, beverages, dental hygiene, bruxism, and hyposalivation. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: The prevalence of ETW was higher in the rural area (77.3%) compared to the urban area (51.2%) (p = 0.001). The odds of presenting ETW were more than twice in schoolchildren from rural areas compared to those from urban areas (OR: 2.25, 95% CI: 1.11-3.98). Risk indicators varied between rural and urban populations, with different factors such as the consumption of fresh tomato sauce, orange, tangerine, atole (artisanal corn-based drink), and teeth grinding in the rural area, and lemon, soft drink, fruit juice consumption, and the simplified oral hygiene index in the urban area (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: To prevent ETW, strategies offering tailored dietary and hygiene advice should be proposed, considering the specific conditions of each geographic area.

RESUMEN

Background/Objectives: Misophonia, characterized by strong emotional reactions to specific sounds, poses significant challenges, particularly in academic settings. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the MisoQuest in a sample of high school and university students. The primary objective was to assess its reliability and structural validity to enhance understanding of misophonia in young adults. Methods: A total of 549 students (Mean age = 23.2 years, SD = 9.3; 285 females, 260 males, 4 individuals who did not disclose their gender) participated. Both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were employed to evaluate the MisoQuest. Fit indices for unifactorial and trifactorial models were compared. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Results: The EFA suggested a dominant single-factor structure with high factor loadings (ranging from 0.60 to 0.79). However, the CFA revealed excellent fit for both unifactorial (CFI and TLI = 1.00, RMSEA close to zero) and trifactorial models (CFI and TLI = 1.00, RMSEA = 0.037). The MisoQuest demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.93). Additionally, 4.5% of participants were identified as positive for misophonia based on a predefined cutoff score of 61. Conclusions: The Brazilian version of the MisoQuest is a reliable and valid tool for assessing misophonia. These findings suggest that the instrument may capture multiple dimensions of the disorder. Given the observed prevalence of misophonia and its impact on students, early identification and tailored interventions are crucial for providing adequate support. Further research is needed to refine the tool and expand its clinical utility.

RESUMEN

This study examined the seropositivity of T. gondii and coinfections with other TORCH pathogens among pregnant women attending 17 Basic Health Units (UBS) in Araçatuba, SP, Brazil. Of the 711 pregnant women seen at these UBS, only 297 were tested for T. gondii. Of the women tested for T. gondii (n = 297), 26.9% had IgG antibodies, 6.7% had IgM, and 32.0% tested positive for either or both. Only 1.4% showed both IgG and IgM antibodies, while 67.7% were non-reactive. The seropositivity was 17.1% for syphilis, 63.2% for rubella, 0.9% for hepatitis C, 0.9% for dengue, 17.9% for COVID-19, and 0.9% for herpes simplex (types 1/2). Coinfections with syphilis, rubella, and herpes simplex were also noted. Higher education levels appeared to protect against T. gondii seropositivity. The findings highlight a significant prevalence of T. gondii among pregnant women, with variation across UBSs, pointing to socioeconomic, behavioral, and environmental factors as influential. We also observed co-occurrence with other infections, such as syphilis, rubella, and herpes simplex. The study underscores the need for targeted public health interventions to reduce the risks of congenital infections.

RESUMEN

Radix accessoria dentis are anatomical variations of the mandibular molars and identifying them radiographically can be challenging for the clinician, especially in specific areas such as endodontics. The objective this study was to determine the prevalence of radix accessoria dentis evaluated in cone-beam computed tomography in a northern Peruvian population. The study design was descriptive and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 2640 permanent mandibular first and second molar teeth evaluated by cone beam tomography. Non-probabilistic convenience sampling was used. For the analysis of radix accesoria dentis, the axial and coronal views of the tomography were evaluated. Prevalence was evaluated according to sex and according to type of tooth and average length. The statistical analyses used were the chi-square test and Kruskal-Wallis H test to find the correlation of the variables. A prevalence of 2.5 % of radix accesoria dentis was determined. According to sex, radix accesoria dentis was present in 1.36 % in females and 1.14 % in males (p > 0.05). The tooth 4.6 obtained the highest prevalence with 1.33 % (p > 0.05) and the average length of radix accesoria dentis found was 9.27 mm (p > 0.05). The prevalence of the radix accesoria dentis evaluated in cone beam tomography in a northern Peruvian population is low. Sex does not influence its presentation. Mandibular first molars are the ones that present the greatest amount of this anatomical variation and the average length of the radix accesoria dentis is less than 10 mm.

RESUMEN

This article presents the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence and correlates of different forms of intimate partner violence (IPV) among women and men in Mexico. To identify studies, a comprehensive search strategy was developed and executed across 11 databases (Academic Search Complete, APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, Embase, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, LILACS, MEDLINE, SciELO, Sociological Abstracts, Web of Science). From the 1,746 studies screened, 155 full-text articles were reviewed, and this systematic review included 27 studies involving 249,557 participants to determine the prevalence of physical, psychological, sexual, threats, and other forms of IPV, according to gender and other sociodemographic characteristics. Overall IPV prevalence was 16.4%, with significant differences across pregnant and non-pregnant women. Physical IPV prevalence was 14.7%, revealing higher rates in men (29.5%) compared to women (14.2%). Psychological IPV prevalence was 27.3% and sexual IPV was at 6.6%, with differences across evaluation periods. Threats and other IPV forms showed a prevalence rate of 14.2% and 21.5%. Meta-regression analyses included gender, education, marital status, rural residency, pregnancy, age, and evaluation period. This study demonstrates that IPV is a critical public health concern in Mexico, impacting both women and men. It shows the vulnerability of rural residents, youth, and pregnant women. However, understanding IPV complexities in Mexico requires nuanced considerations of demographic and situational contexts. Urgent initiatives from municipal, state, and federal governments are needed to combat IPV, focusing on prevention and support for affected individuals.

RESUMEN

Many cooked foods are prepared with spices and dried herbs; these can be contaminated by several types of microorganisms, including aerobic spore-forming bacteria. The Bacillus cereus group is very widespread in nature and is known among the common food contaminants. They are involved in food poisoning, causing two types of syndromes, diarrheal and emetic. The aims of the present work were to determine the prevalence of toxigenic Bacillus cereus spores in spices and herbs marketed in the Laghouat area and to identify their toxigenic genes via PCR. Among the 191 samples, 14.13% were determined to be B. cereus, with concentrations ranging from 2.52 to 5.82 log cfu/g, where the highest level of contamination was observed in allspice and ginger. Moreover, entFM (100%), nhe (88.23%) and cytK (70.58%) were the most frequently identified toxin genes, whereas hbl (23.52%) was less common, and no emetic toxin-encoding gene (cesB) was found in any of the samples. Considering the results of the present study, the B. cereus microbial load and toxin gene profiles of spices show that spices have potential for public health in Algeria. In this context, it is crucial to guarantee the microbiological safety of spices by respecting good hygiene practices, eliminating bacterial spores and toxin production via sterilization and using appropriate packaging for these products.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Although the discussion about oral mucositis in Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) patients has become a prominent issue, its incidence and influencing factors have not been thoroughly synthesized. This meta-analysis aims to integrate the prevalence and associated factors of radiation-induced oral mucositis among HNC patients. METHODS: This study searched the following electronic databases: PubMed, the Cochrane Database, the Web of Science, EMBASE, CNKI, the Wanfang Database, and the VIP Database. The publication timeframe for the included studies ranged from January 2005 until January 2024. Two investigators used the NOS scale and AHRQ evaluation criteria for quality evaluation. All qualified studies and statistical analyses were conducted using RevMan 5.2 and Stata 17.0. RESULTS: Thirty eligible studies were included in the analysis. The results show that the prevalence of radiation-induced oral mucositis in HNC patients was 94% [95% CI (89%, 98%)]. Furthermore, the prevalence of severe radiation-induced oral mucositis in HNC patients is 37% [95%CI (29%, 45%)]. Chemotherapy, smoking history, diabetes, oral PH ≤ 7.0, and alcohol consumption are the main risk factors for radioactive oral mucositis. In addition, BMI > 24.0 kg/m2, no use of antibiotics, and no use of oral mucosal protective agents are associated with radioactive oral mucositis. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis underscores a significantly high prevalence of radiation-induced oral mucositis in HNC patients. Establishing healthy lifestyle habits and maintaining a healthy oral environment are pivotal in preventing radiation-induced oral mucositis.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The epidemiologic data of metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in breast cancer (BC) patients remains limited. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinicopathological characteristics of hepatic steatosis (HS) and MAFLD in Chinese BC women at initial diagnosis. METHODS: 3217 non-metastatic primary BC women with MAFLD evaluation indexes at initial diagnosis and 32,170 age-matched (in a 1:10 ratio) contemporaneous health check-up women were enrolled. RESULTS: The prevalence of HS (21.5% vs. 19.7%, p = 0.013) and MAFLD (20.8% vs. 18.6%, p = 0.002) were significantly higher in BC women than in health check-ups, respectively. Meanwhile, the prevalence of HS/MAFLD among elderly BC women (≥ 60 years) was significantly higher than the health check-ups (38.7%/37.6% vs 31.9%/30.8%), respectively. In BC women with HS/MAFLD, the prevalence of overweight/obesity was up to 85.7%/88.6%, dyslipidemia and elevated blood pressure were 63.2%/63.7% and 59.7%/61.7%, respectively. No statistical significance of the expressions of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER-2) and Ki67 were found between BC women with HS/MAFLD and BC women without HS/MAFLD. After adjustment, BC women with HS showed significantly higher risk of lymph node metastasis than BC women without HS. Subjects with HS/MAFLD had higher risks of overweight/obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, hyperuricemia, and elevated enzymes than those without HS/MAFLD. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with health check-ups, BC patients have higher prevalence of HS/MAFLD. HS/MAFLD coexist with high prevalence of metabolic complications, and the risk of lymph node metastasis was significantly higher in BC women with HS than in BC women without HS.

RESUMEN

A reluctance to eat and/or avoidance of novel foods is characterized as food neophobia (FN). FN restricts the diet to familiar foods when, in fact, it should be much more varied. FN can be a barrier to healthy foods, affecting the quality of diet, and impairing children's growth and development. Therefore, according to their caregivers' perceptions, this study aimed to evaluate FN in children from Federal District/Brazil. The Brazilian Children's Food Neophobia Questionnaire (BCFNeo), a specific instrument developed and validated in Brazil, was answered by caregivers of children aged 4 to 11 y/o. Sampling occurred through snowball recruitment, being convenient and non-probabilistic. The Health Sciences Ethics Committee approved the study. The analysis evaluated FN in total (BCFNeoTot) and in the following domains: general (FNgen), for fruits (FNfru), and for vegetables (FNveg). FN scores were compared between sex and child's age and categorized according to three ordinal levels. FN levels were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. The Friedman test, followed by the Wilcoxon test with Bonferroni correction, was performed to analyze differences in FN according to the environment. Of the caregivers' answers for their children, 595 answers were included, because 19 were out of age. The prevalence of high FN was 42.9%. The domain with the highest prevalence of high FN was vegetables (48.6%). Children aged 8 to 11 y/o had a higher mean FN in two domains (FNgen p = 0.047 and FNveg p = 0.038) when compared to children aged 4 to 7 y/o. Boys were more neophobic in all domains (FNgen p = 0.017; FNfru p = 0.010; FNveg p = 0.013; BCFNeoTot p = 0.008), and FN tends not to decrease with age. The results showed that the children of the FD are more neophobic than Brazilian children in general, highlighting the importance of additional studies in FN determinants in this population and nutritional education interventions to reduce FN among FD children.
