RESUMEN

Nitroaromatic compounds have been used for treating parasitic diseases since the 1960s. Pharmacological alternatives to treat them are under observation. However, for the most neglected diseases, such as those caused by worms and less known protozoans, nitro compounds are still among the drugs of choice, despite their well-known collateral effects. In this review, we describe the chemistry and the uses of the still most employed nitroaromatic compounds for treating parasitosis caused by worms or lesser-known protozoans. We also describe their application as veterinary drugs. The most accepted mechanism of action seems to be the same, leading to collateral effects. For this reason, a special session was dedicated to discussing toxicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenesis, as well as the most acceptable aspects of the known structure-activity/toxicity relationships involving nitroaromatic compounds. It employed the SciFindern search tool from the American Chemical Society in the search for the most relevant bibliography within the field, exploring keyword expressions such as "NITRO COMPOUNDS" and "BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY" (within Abstracts or Keywords) and concepts related to parasites, pharmacology and toxicology. The results were classified according to the chemical classes of nitro compounds, being the most relevant studies regarding journal impact and interest of the described results chosen to be discussed. From the found literature, it is easy to notice that nitro compounds, especially the nitroaromatic ones, are still widely used in antiparasitic therapy, despite their toxicity. They also are the best starting point in the search for new active compounds.

This study aims to report the occurrence of two important parasites in farmed tambaqui Colossoma macropomum in the state of Tocantins, the acanthocephalan Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae and the dinoflagellate protozoan Piscinoodinium pillulare, also suggesting the main treatments to control them. The fish sampled for the study were infected by N. buttnerae, and P. pillulare, with prevalence from 100% and mean intensity from 51.4 to 354,264, respectively. This was the first report on the occurrence of such parasites in C. macropomum in the state of Tocantins. We emphasize the need to adopt good farm management and biosecurity practices to prevent pathogenic agents to enter or leave a property. Reported treatments with synthetic and natural products with positive results are also suggested to treat against those parasites in farmed C. macropomum.(AU)


Este estudo teve como objetivo relatar a ocorrência de dois importantes parasitos em tambaqui Colossoma macropomum cultivado no estado de Tocantins, o acantocéfalo Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae e o protozoário dinoflagelado Piscinoodinium pillulare e também destacar os principais tratamentos para controlá-los. Os peixes examinados estavam infectados por N. buttnerae e P. pillulare, com prevalência de 100% e intensidade média de 51,4 a 354.264,4, respectivamente. Este foi o primeiro relato da ocorrência desses parasitos para C. macropomum no estado de Tocantins. Destaca-se a necessidade da adoção de boas práticas de manejo na produção e de manejo sanitário, para evitar a contaminação da propriedade e a transmissão para pisciculturas vizinhas. Em relação ao controle dessas parasitoses são apresentados os tratamentos com resultados positivos para C. macropomum, com o uso de produtos sintéticos e naturais.(AU)

The present study assesses the diversity and seasonal variation of parasites in Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) cultivated in excavated tanks in the Federal District, Brazil. A total of 120 specimens of O. niloticus were collected in 12 monthly collections. Water quality parameters were checked at all tanks. The animals, sacrificed by immersion into anesthetic solution, had the gills scraped, in which the mucus was analyzed under an optical microscope. Parasitological examination showed Trichodina sp., Epistylis sp., Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, and Monogenea helminths in the fish gills. We found statistically significant differences between Monogenea parasites collected in the fall and winter and between I. multifiliis protozoans collected in fall-winter and winter-summer periods. Except for Epistylis sp., all parasites showed abundance peaks in O. niloticus specimens collected during the winter, which may characterize the seasonality of these parasites in the Federal District region. Monogenea helminths were the most prevalent among the parasites found, with the highest prevalence during the fall. The mean abundance of parasites was similar between the fall and winter. However, the abundance of monogenetic trematodes was higher between the winter and summer. I. multifiliis showed significant variation between fall-winter and winter-summer periods.(AU)

Abstract We performed coproparasitological testing of free-living golden-headed lion tamarins, Leontopithecus chrysomelas, using the Hoffmann-Pons-Janner method. In total, we collected 118 samples from ten groups: four living in Federal Protected Area and six living in Non-Protected Areas of cocoa farms. Eggs from parasites of the Acanthocephala phylum and Spiruridae, Ancylostomatidae, Ascarididae and Oxyuridae families were identified, as well as the genus Strongyloides (Nematode: Strongyloididae) and phylum Apicomplexa. This is the first description of infection with coccidian, Trichuridae family and Strongyloides spp. in L. chrysomelas. A total of 48% (n= 57) of the animals were infected and the highest prevalence (37.2±SD 8.72, n = 44) was for Acanthocephalidae, followed by Spiruridae (8.5±SD 5.03, n = 10). There was no difference in parasite prevalence by age classes or sex. However, we found higher diversity and prevalence of parasites in animals living in the Federal Protected Area. These results suggest that intestinal parasites may be influenced by environmental factors, such as the management of the areas where the animals live, in addition to the feeding behavior of L. chrysomelas and distinct transmission strategies of parasites. The combination of ecological and demographic data combined with parasitological studies may contribute to conservation programs for this species.


Resumo Foram realizados testes coproparasitológicos de micos-leões-dourados de vida livre, Leontopithecus chrysomelas, usando-se o método de Hoffmann-Pons-Janner. No total, foram coletadas 118 amostras de dez grupos: quatro grupos residentes em Área de Conservação Federal e seis grupos em Área não protegida de fazendas de cacau. Ovos de parasitas do filo Acantocephala e das famílias Spiruridae, Ancylostomatidae, Ascarididae, Oxyuridae foram identificados, bem como o gênero Strongyloides (Nematoda: Strongyloididae) e o filo Apicomplexa. Esta é a primeira descrição de infecção de coccídeos, família Trichuridae e Strongyloides spp. em L. chrysomelas. Um total de 48% (n = 57) dos animais estavam parasitados e a maior prevalência (37,2 ±DP 8,72, n = 44) foi para Acanthocephalan, seguido por Spiruridae (8,5±DP 5,03, n = 10). Não houve diferença na prevalência do táxon de parasita por idade ou sexo. No entanto, foi encontrada maior diversidade e prevalência de parasitas em animais que vivem na Unidade de Conservação Federal. Esses resultados sugerem que os parasitas intestinais podem ser influenciados por fatores ambientais, como o manejo das áreas, além do comportamento alimentar de L. chrysomelas e distintas estratégias de transmissão dos parasitas. A combinação de dados ecológicos e demográficos com estudos parasitológicos podem contribuir para programas de conservação dessa espécie.

BACKGROUND: A high percentage of the population in Latin America lives with intestinal parasitic infections, a neglected tropical disease frequently not treated. Intestinal parasitism is associated with other disorders, but information about the epidemiological situation in countries like Bolivia is scarce. Environmental conditions play a role in the prevalence of certain parasites. The main objective was to know the current situation of parasitic infections among children under 12 years old from different geographical areas of Cochabamba - Bolivia. METHODS: We analysed the laboratory reports of four second-line hospitals in different areas and the Tertiary Care Hospital. Results of stool examinations performed between 2011 and 2015 in children under 12 years of age were collected. RESULTS: We gathered the results of 23,221 examinations. The 89% of children were less than five years old. Pathogenic parasites were found in 31%. Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia were the two most prevalent parasites in all areas. Helminths were 19% of positive samples and Ascaris lumbricoides was the most prevalent. Parasitic infections are more frequent in tropical areas where helminths are highly concentrated. Pre-school age children (OR: 5.296; 95% CI: 4.81-5.83) and semi-tropical area (OR: 3.26; 95% CI: 2.90-3.66) were strongly associated to the presence of pathogenic parasites. CONCLUSIONS: Parasitic infections in children are still very prevalent in Bolivia. Protozoan infections are a major problem, while the prevalence of helminths seems to be decreasing. The most vulnerable population is still concentrated in semi-tropical and tropical areas, where the risk of parasitic infection is probably increased due to poor environmental conditions. Our results could allow reconsideration of more effective parasitic disease control policies, taking into account regional characteristics.

Zoonotic parasites are a major public health problem globally, representing a hazard to human health. The infections occur through contact with different parasite forms. Public squares are a common meeting place for people and dogs, becoming a risk area for transmission to other dogs and humans. A spatial analysis of zoonotic parasite distribution in urban public squares in Gran Santiago, Chile was performed to elucidate its importance, exploring spatial aggregation on positivity rates at commune level. A total of 170 stool samples were analysed; 54 (31.7%) were positive for gastrointestinal-zoonotic parasites. Positivity was detected in 27 (79.4%) squares. Diversity of parasite species was variable across sites. Toxocara canis was the most frequently detected (27 samples, 21/34 squares), followed by Toxascaris leonina (13 samples, 10/34 squares), cestode eggs (10 samples, 9/34 squares), Giardia sp. (6 samples, 5/34 squares), Ancylostomatidae-like eggs (4 samples, 4/34 squares), Cryptosporidium spp. (2 samples, 2/34 squares) and Entamoeba spp. (1 sample, 1/34 square). Spatial autocorrelation (SA) was observed at commune level. The local indicators of the spatial association test showed statistical significance for cestode eggs (p < 0.001) with a negative SA (Moran's I Index = -0.2929, CI-95% = -0.3869--0.1989) and Ancylostomatidae (p = 0.046) with a positive SA (Moran's I Index = 0.1404, CI-95% = 0.0499-0.2309). Toxocara canis is the most prevalent geo-helminth in public places of Santiago, Chile. Spatial autocorrelation was detected for cestode eggs and Ancylostomatidae. Diagnosis and detection of parasites is key for the establishment of control/eradication of environmental dissemination following One Health guidelines.

Raptors are carnivorous birds with great hunting ability. Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and Sarcocystis spp. are intracellular Apicomplexan protozoans which infect a wide range of intermediate hosts, including birds. The aims of this study were to evaluate the serological reactivity of captive raptors serum to T. gondii, N. caninum and S. neurona antigens and identify possible risk factors associated with the infection. From August 2014 to September 2015, blood samples from 72 raptors were collected and serum samples were tested by immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT). Antigen slides were prepared using tachyzoites of T. gondii and N. caninum and using merozoites of S. neurona. Serum samples were tested at the following cut-off dilutions: 1:16 for T. gondii and 1:50 for N. caninum and S. neurona. An anti-chicken IgY antibody conjugated with FITC was used as a secondary antibody at 1:50 dilution. Out of the 72 raptors serum tested by IFAT, 2.7% reacted to N. caninum, 8.3% to T. gondii and 11.1% to S. neurona antigens. The region in which the sample was collected, the reason the raptors were kept in captivity and diet were statistically associated with seropositivity to T. gondii and the use of the birds and diet were statistically associated with seropositivity to N. caninum and S. neurona (p ≤ 0.05). We highlight the occurrence of these protozoans in birds of prey and the importance of good hygiene and feeding management of these birds in captivity to reduce the risk of protozoal infections.

Lipid droplets (LD) have long been considered as mere fat drops; however, LD have lately been revealed to be ubiquitous, dynamic and to be present in diverse organelles in which they have a wide range of key functions. Although incompletely understood, the biogenesis of eukaryotic LD initiates with the synthesis of neutral lipids (NL) by enzymes located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The accumulation of NL leads to their segregation into nanometric nuclei which then grow into lenses between the ER leaflets as they are further filled with NL. The lipid composition and interfacial tensions of both ER and the lenses modulate their shape which, together with specific ER proteins, determine the proneness of LD to bud from the ER toward the cytoplasm. The most important function of LD is the buffering of energy. But far beyond this, LD are actively integrated into physiological processes, such as lipid metabolism, control of protein homeostasis, sequestration of toxic lipid metabolic intermediates, protection from stress, and proliferation of tumours. Besides, LD may serve as platforms for pathogen replication and defense. To accomplish these functions, from biogenesis to breakdown, eukaryotic LD have developed mechanisms to travel within the cytoplasm and to establish contact with other organelles. When nutrient deprivation occurs, LD undergo breakdown (lipolysis), which begins with the LD-associated members of the perilipins family PLIN2 and PLIN3 chaperone-mediated autophagy degradation (CMA), a specific type of autophagy that selectively degrades a subset of cytosolic proteins in lysosomes. Indeed, PLINs CMA degradation is a prerequisite for further true lipolysis, which occurs via cytosolic lipases or by lysosome luminal lipases when autophagosomes engulf portions of LD and target them to lysosomes. LD play a crucial role in several pathophysiological processes. Increased accumulation of LD in non-adipose cells is commonly observed in numerous infectious diseases caused by intracellular pathogens including viral, bacterial, and parasite infections, and is gradually recognized as a prominent characteristic in a variety of cancers. This review discusses current evidence related to the modulation of LD biogenesis and breakdown caused by intracellular pathogens and cancer.

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis is a protist that lives in the intestinal tract of a variety of hosts, including humans. It is still unclear how Blastocystis causes disease, which presents an ongoing challenge for researchers. Despite the controversial findings on the association between Blastocystis and clinical digestive manifestations, there is currently no consensus as to whether this protozoan actually behaves as a pathogen in humans. Furthermore, the relationship between Blastocystis and the intestinal microbiota composition is not yet clear. For that reason, the aim of this study was to identify if colonization by Blastocystis is related to changes in the diversity and relative abundance of bacterial communities, compared with those of Blastocystis-free individuals in a group of Colombian children. METHODS: We took stool samples from 57 school-aged children attending a daycare institution in Popayán (Southwest Colombia). Whole DNA was extracted and examined by 16S-rRNA amplicon-based sequencing. Blastocystis was detected by real time PCR and other intestinal parasites were detected by microscopy. We evaluated if Blastocystis was associated with host variables and the diversity and abundance of microbial communities. RESULTS: The composition of the intestinal bacterial community was not significantly different between Blastocystis-free and Blastocystis-colonized children. Despite this, we observed a higher microbial richness in the intestines of children colonized by Blastocystis, which could, therefore, be considered a benefit to intestinal health. The phylum Firmicutes was the predominant taxonomic unit in both groups analyzed. In Blastocystis-free individuals, there was a higher proportion of Bacteroidetes; similarly, in children colonized by Blastocystis, there was a higher relative abundance of the phylum Proteobacteria; however, no statistically significant differences were found between the comparison groups. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of Blastocystis showed a decrease in Bacteroides, and an increase in the relative abundance of the genus Faecalibacterium. It was also evident that the presence of Blastocystis was unrelated to dysbiosis at the intestinal level; on the contrary, its presence did not show statistically differences in the intestinal microbiota composition. Nevertheless, we believe that Blastocystis plays a role in the ecology of the intestinal microbiota through its interaction with other microbial components.

This study evaluated the parasitic fauna of hybrids tambacu (Colossoma macropomum × Piaractus mesopotamicus) and patinga (P. mesopotamicus × Piaractus brachypomus) and their host-parasite-environment interaction during the warm and cold seasons in two fish farms located in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, South America. A total of 120 fish, being 60 fish for species (30 in the warm season and 30 in the cold season) were examined. Water quality was measured weekly to evaluate the interaction between environmental conditions and parasitism. Fifteen species of parasites were found: Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Chilodonella hexasticha e Trichodina sp. (Protozoa), Henneguya piaractus, Myxobolus colossomatis and Myxobolus cuneus (Myxozoa); Anacanthorus penilabiatus, Mymarothecium boegeri, Mymarothecium viatorum, and Notozothecium janauachensis (Monogenoidea), Goezia spinulosa and Goezia sp. (Nematoda), Echinorhynchus jucundus (Acanthocephala), and Dolops carvalhoi, Lernaea cyprinacea (Crustacea). The ciliate protozoan I. multifiliis and monogenoids were the most prevalent parasites in the cold and warm seasons for both hybrids in the different culture systems intensive production and sportive fishing. It was observed that the serrasalmid hybrids are more susceptible to parasites and harbor high diversity of parasites in relation to the parental species C. macropomum, P. mesopotamicus and P. brachypomus, with a predominance of ectoparasites.(AU)

Foram examinados um total de 120 peixes, sendo 60 peixes por espécie. A qualidade da água foi mensurada semanalmente para avaliar a interação entre condições ambientais e parasitismo. Foram encontradas quinze espécies de parasitos: Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Chilodonella hexasticha e Trichodina sp. (Protozoa); Henneguya piaractus, Myxobolus colossomatis e Myxobolus cuneus (Myxozoa), Anacanthorus penilabiatus, Mymarothecium boegeri, Mymarothecium viatorum e Notozothecium janauachensis (Monogenoidea), Goezia spinulosa e Goezia sp. (Nematoda), Echinorhynchus jucundus (Acanthocephala), Dolops carvalhoi eLernaea cyprinacea (Crustacea). O protozoário ciliado I. multifiliis e helmintos monogenoides foram os parasitos mais prevalentes nas estações fria e quente para ambos os híbridos nos diferentes sistemas de cultivo, produção intensiva comercial e pesca esportiva. Observou-se que os híbridos de serrasalmídeos são mais suscetíveis aos parasitos e abrigam alta diversidade parasitária em relação às espécies parentais, C. macropomum, P. mesopotamicus e P. brachypomus em ambiente de cultivo com predominância de ectoparasitos.(AU)

O protozoário ciliado I. multifiliis e helmintos monogenoides foram os parasitos mais prevalentes nas estações fria e quente para ambos os híbridos nos diferentes sistemas de cultivo, produção intensiva comercial e pesca esportiva. Observou-se que os híbridos de serrasalmídeos são mais suscetíveis aos parasitos e abrigam alta diversidade parasitária em relação às espécies parentais, C. macropomum, P. mesopotamicus e P. brachypomus em ambiente de cultivo com predominância de ectoparasitos.

This study examined sand fly diversity and the natural infection of sand flies by Leishmania in three localities in Rondônia State: Santo Antônio and São Vicente farm, which are anthropized environments, and the Jamari FLONA, which has not been anthropized. Sand flies were collected in canopies and at ground level using CDC light traps and BG-Sentinel CO2 traps. Female sand flies were grouped into pools that were subjected to DNA extraction and the samples were subjected to PCR to detect and identify Leishmania. A total of 6696 specimens were examined and 52 species were identified. Abundance was greater in canopies than at ground level (n = 5657 and n = 1039, respectively); however, fauna composition was more diverse at ground level. A total of 4870 specimens were collected using CDC light traps and 1826 specimens were collected using BG-Sentinel traps. The presence of Leishmania DNA was detected in 12 pools, and Leishmania species profiles were identified in three of these pools: one pool of Psychodopygus amazonensis and one pool of Psychodopygus chagasi infected with Le. (Vi.) braziliensis, and one pool of Psychodopygus davisi infected with Le. (Le.) amazonensis. Sand flies are sensitive to environmental modification and species diversity is greater in regions that have experienced less anthropization. Although the annual infection rate of cutaneous leishmaniasis is high in Rondônia State, the role that sand flies play in the leishmaniasis transmission cycle remains poorly understood. The high abundance of Ps. davisi and Trichophoromyia auraensis and the presence in these species of natural infection by Leishmania spp. suggest that these species are acting as vectors of tegumentary leishmaniasis in Rondônia.

Anti-T. gondii antibodies were found in 132 (41.25%; 95% CI: 35.84%-46.87%) dogs, 58 (43.94%) from urban areas and 74 (56.06%) from rural areas, and endpoint titers ranged from 16 to 8192. A total of 33 dogs (10.3%) (12 urban and 21 rural animals) reacted to both agents (P 0.05). Tis study showed a higher prevalence of anti-T. gondii compared to anti-N. caninum antibodies in the dogs living in the Pantanal region, suggesting that both protozoans circulate in the studied region. Tis information is relevant, in view of its implications for animal and public health.

Introducción: Los parásitos intestinales tienen alto impacto en la salud de la población mundial y pueden constituir un factor más de riesgo en poblaciones en alto grado de vulnerabilidad por desplazamientos humanos a causa de la pobreza, violencia o catástrofes naturales. Objetivo: Evaluar el parasitismo intestinal en los habitantes de dos asentamientos humanos en alto grado de vulnerabilidad. Métodos: estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, en el que se analizaron 367 muestras fecales de los habitantes de dos asentamientos humanos en estado de vulnerabilidad del departamento del Atlántico-Colombia, durante los años 2015 y 2016. Se realizó examen directo de las heces en solución salina, lugol y concentración con el método formol-éter. Se estableció la frecuencia absoluta y relativa de los parásitos presentes y se compararon los resultados entre los dos lugares de muestreo. Resultados: el 91,28 por ciento de la población analizada tenía parásitos intestinales. Las helmintiasis presentaron una frecuencia del 52,32 por ciento. Los parásitos más frecuentes fueron Blastocystis sp. (49,05 por ciento) y Trichuris trichiura (44,96 por ciento). Conclusiones: La alta prevalencia de parásitos en las poblaciones vulnerables analizadas, plantea la necesidad de implementar estrategias para el control del parasitismo intestinal dentro de los planes de prevención y mitigación de riesgos(AU)


Introduction: Intestinal parasites have high impact in the health of the world population and can constitute another risk factor in populations with a high degree of vulnerability by human displacements because of poverty, violence or natural catastrophes. Objective: To evaluate intestinal parasitism in inhabitants of two populations with high degree of vulnerability. Methods: Cross sectional, descriptive study in which 367 stool samples were analyzed from the inhabitants of two populations with high vulnerability's degree, in Atlántico-Colombia department during the years 2015 and 2016. The parasitological analysis was performed by direct examination of the stool samples in saline, lugol and concentration solutions by the formalin-ether method. The absolute and relative frequencies of the parasites present were established and the results between the sampled places were compared. Results: 91.28 percent of the population was infected with intestinal parasites. Helminthiasis showed a frequency of 52.32 percent. The most frequents parasites were Blastocystis sp. (49.05 percent) and Trichuris trichiura (44.96 percent). Conclusions: The high prevalence of parasites in the analyzed populations with a high degree of vulnerability expresses the need of implementing strategies for the control of intestinal parasitism in the prevention and risk's mitigation planning(AU)

Kinetoplastida trypanosomatidae microorganisms are protozoan parasites exhibiting a developmental stage in the gut of insect vectors and tissues of vertebrate hosts. During the vertebrate infective stages, these parasites alter the differential expression of virulence genes, modifying their biological and antigenic properties in order to subvert the host protective immune responses and establish a persistent infection. One of the hallmarks of kinetoplastid parasites is their evasion mechanisms from host immunity, leading to disease chronification. The diseases caused by kinetoplastid parasites are neglected by the global expenditures in research and development, affecting millions of individuals in the low and middle-income countries located mainly in the tropical and subtropical regions. However, investments made by public and private initiatives have over the past decade leveraged important lines of intervention that if well-integrated to health care programs will likely accelerate disease control initiatives. This review summarizes recent advances in public health care principles, including new drug discoveries and their rational use with chemotherapeutic vaccines, and the implementation of control efforts to spatially mapping the kinetoplastid infections through monitoring of infected individuals in epidemic areas. These approaches should bring us the means to track genetic variation of parasites and drug resistance, integrating this knowledge into effective stewardship programs to prevent vector-borne kinetoplastid infections in areas at risk of disease spreading.

The aim of this study was to investigate the component communities of parasites in Chaetobranchus flavescens from a tributary of the Amazon River system, northern Brazil. Out of 39 fish examined, 1,124,710 parasites were collected, such as Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Piscinoodinium pillulare (Protozoa), Gussevia spilocirra, Gussevia elephus (Monogenea), metacercariae of Clinostomum marginatum and Posthodiplostomum sp. (Digenea), Pseudoproleptus sp. larvae. (Nematoda), Echinorhynchus paranensis, Gorytocephalus spectabilis (Acanthocephala), Braga patagonica (Isopoda) and leeches Glossiphonidae (Hirudinea). However, I. multifiliis was the dominant and abundant species, while B. patagonica and Hirudinea gen. sp. were the least prevalent and abundant parasites. These parasites had an aggregate dispersion, with mean richness of 4.7 ± 1.5 per fish, Brillouin diversity of 0.32 ± 0.29 and evenness of 0.15 ± 0.13. No correlation between the length and the parasite species richness and the Brillouin diversity was found, as well as regarding host size and abundance of parasites. Body condition of the hosts was not affected by the moderate parasitism. The low diversity of endoparasites indicates that C. flavescens is a host with low position in the food web. Finally, this was the first study on parasites of C. flavescens.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the component communities of parasites in Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis from a tributary of the Amazon River system, in Northern Brazil. In 32 fish examined, 902,551 parasites were collected, including Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Piscinoodinium pillulare, Sciadicleithrum geophagi, Posthodiplostomum sp., Clinostomum marginatum, Echinorhynchus paranensis, Neoechinorhynchus pterodoridis, and Dolops longicauda. I. multifiliis was the dominant and abundant parasite species. The ectoparasites presented aggregate dispersion, but the endoparasites showed random dispersion pattern. Mean species richness was 4.0 ± 1.5 parasites, mean Brillouin diversity (HB) was 0.33 ± 0.28, mean evenness was 0.15 ± 0.13, and Berger-Parker dominance (d) was 0.85 ± 0.17. The species richness of parasites and HB were positively correlated with the length of hosts. There was positive correlation between the abundance of P. pillulare and length and weight, between the abundance of I. multifiliis and weight, as well as between the abundance of E. paranensis and N. pterodoridis and the length of hosts. Body condition of the hosts was not affected by moderate parasitism. The low diversity of endoparasites indicates that C. orbicularis is a host with low position in the food web. This is the first record of all these parasites for C. orbicularis.

This study evaluated the parasite fauna of farmed hybrid surubim (Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum x P. corruscans) and the host-parasite-environment relationship in two fish farms located in Mato Grosso do Sul, Central Brazil, South America. A total of 120 hybrids from two different farms, 60 in each season (30 in the hot and 30 in cold season) were examined during a year. Water quality was weekly measured to evaluate the interaction among environmental conditions and parasitism. Histopathology was used to observe the effects of the parasites and environment on the fish gills. The ciliate protozoan Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and the monogeneans (Ameloblastella sp., Amphocleithrium paraguayensis, Vancleaveus ciccinus, V. fungulus and V. janacauensis) were the most prevalent parasites detected in both seasons in both farms, with prevalence above 80%. It was stated that parasites did not cause important damage in the health status of the hybrid surubim. These results might be related to general good management practices and environmental quality implemented by the fish farmers. The presence of uncommon monogenean parasites to this hybrid compared to their parents causing an environmental and ecological concern is here discussed.(AU)


Este estudo avaliou a fauna de parasitos do surubim híbrido cultivado (Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum x P. corruscans) e a relação hospedeiro-parasito-ambiente em duas pisciculturas localizadas no Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul, região Centro-Oeste, Brasil. Um total de 120 híbridos de duas fazendas, 60 em cada estação (30 na estação quente e 30 na fria), foram examinados durante um ano. A qualidade da água foi medida semanalmente para avaliar a interação entre as condições ambientais e o parasitismo. Histopatologia foi usada para observar os efeitos dos parasitos e do ambiente nas brânquias dos peixes. O protozoário ciliado Ichthyophthirius multifiliis e Monogenea (Ameloblastella sp., Amphocleithrium paraguayensis, Vancleaveus ciccinus, V. fungulus e V. janacauensis) foram os parasitos mais prevalentes detectados em ambas estações nas duas fazendas, com prevalências acima de 80%. Observou-se que os parasitos não causaram danos ao estado de saúde do surubim híbrido. Esses resultados estão relacionados às boas práticas de manejo e qualidade ambiental implementada pelos produtores. É discutida a presença incomum de Monogenea para esse híbrido, comparado com seus progenitores, podendo causar preocupação ambiental e ecológica.(AU)
