RESUMEN

Sundarban, a Ramsar site of India, has been encountering an ecological threat due to the presence of microplastic (MP) wastes generated from different anthropogenic sources. Clibanarius longitarsus, an intertidal hermit crab of Sundarban Biosphere Reserve, resides within the abandoned shell of a gastropod mollusc, Telescopium telescopium. We characterized and estimated the MP in the gills and gut of hermit crab, as well as in the water present in its occupied gastropod shell. The average microplastic abundance in sea water, sand and sediment were 0.175 ± 0.145 MP L-1, 42 ± 15.03 MP kg-1 and 67.63 ± 24.13 MP kg-1 respectively. The average microplastic load in hermit crab was 1.94 ± 0.59 MP crab-1, with 33.89 % and 66.11 % in gills and gut respectively. Gastropod shell water exhibited accumulation of 1.69 ± 1.43 MP L-1. Transparent and fibrous microplastics were documented as the dominant polymers of water, sand and sediment. Shell water exhibited the prevalence of green microplastics followed by transparent ones. Microscopic examination revealed microplastics with 100-300 µm size categories were dominant across all abiotic compartments. ATR-FTIR and Raman spectroscopy confirmed polyethylene and polypropylene as the prevalent polymers among the five identified polymers of biotic and abiotic components. The target group index indicated green and black as the preferable microplastics of crab. The ecological risk analysis indicated a considerable level of environmental pollution risk in Sundarban and its inhabiting organisms. This important information base may facilitate in developing a strategy of mitigation to limit the MP induced ecological risk at Sundarban Biosphere Reserve.

Mysids are small crustaceans that are closely related to shrimp/prawns and crabs but not subject to food allergen labeling requirements for raw materials. In the past, a processed food that contained Japanese smelt (wakasagi) was suspected of producing a false-positive result in shrimp/prawn and crab allergen test because of the presence of consumed mysids. However, there was no reported methods to confirm mysid presence. Therefore, we developed a PCR method to detect mysids. The developed PCR method had high specificity for a mysid species, with no amplification observed from samples of shrimp, crab, krill, mantis shrimp, or the meat of Japanese smelt. In addition, DNA extracted from the internal organs of Japanese smelt was amplified by this PCR method, and sequencing revealed mysid DNA. This confirmed that mysids remained in the internal organs of Japanese smelt following consumption. This PCR method for mysid detection even amplified Japanese smelt-containing processed food samples that were suspected to have produced a false-positive result in shrimp/prawn and crab ELISA. Thus, this PCR method would enable to detect such false positives are caused by mysid contamination.

The southern king crab (SKC) Lithodes santolla is a crustacean parasitised by the bopyrid Eremitione tuberculata. This study aimed to analyse spatial and temporal variations in E. tuberculata prevalence in the juvenile SKC population of San Jorge Gulf (SJG) and adjacent waters (Argentine Patagonia), and evaluate the effects of the parasite on SKC juveniles to improve our understanding of its impact as a disease on SKC health condition. Moult increment and body weight were compared between parasitised and unparasitised individuals. The prevalence of E. tuberculata in SKC juveniles varied both spatially and temporally. In the south of SJG, the prevalence was 54.5% (n = 11). Temporal prevalence analysis revealed values lower than 17.4% in mid SJG during May and September 2015. No significant differences were observed in E. tuberculata prevalence between sexes or among seasons. Eremitione tuberculata had a negative effect on SKC growth (lower body dry mass, moult increment and relative increment rate) in parasitised individuals. We hypothesised that the higher prevalence of E. tuberculata in the south SJG could be attributed to the retention of parasite larvae and the presence of the frontal system in this part of the gulf. The temporal variations could reflect host mortality. Our results suggest that bopyrid infestation may have a more important role than previously believed in the dynamics of the SKC population in mid-Patagonia.

Limitations on energetic resources create evolutionary trade-offs, prompting us to investigate if investment in claw strength remains consistent across crustaceans living in diverse habitats. Decapod crustaceans living in deep-sea hydrothermal vents are ideal for this study due to their extreme environment. In this study, we investigated whether decapods (blind crab Austinograea sp. and the squat lobster Munidopsis lauensis) living in deep-sea hydrothermal vents prioritize investing in strong claws compared to the carapace, like coastal decapods. We analyzed exoskeleton morphology, mechanical properties, structures, and elemental composition in both the carapace and claws of four Decapoda species (two each from Brachyura and Anomura infraorders) in vent and coastal habitats. Coastal decapods had ∼4-9 times more teeth on their claw cutting edge than the vent species. Further, only the coastal species exhibited higher firmness in their claws than in their carapaces. Each infraorder controlled exoskeletal hardness differently: Brachyura changed the stacking height of the Bouligand structure, while Anomura regulated magnesium content in the exoskeleton. The vent decapods may prioritize strengthening their carapace over developing robust claws, allocating resources to adapt to the harsh conditions of deep-sea hydrothermal vents. This choice might enhance their survival in the extreme environment, where carapace strength is crucial for protecting internal organs from environmental factors, rather than relying on the powerful claws seen in coastal decapods for a competitive advantage.

Brachyura and Anomala (or Anomura), also referred to as true and false crabs, form the species-rich and globally abundant group of Meiura, an ingroup of Decapoda. The evolutionary success of both groups is sometimes attributed to the process of carcinization (evolving a crab-like body), but might also be connected to the megalopa, a specific transitional larval phase. We investigate these questions, using outline analysis of the shields (carapaces) of more than 1500 meiuran crabs. We compare the morphological diversity of different developmental phases of major ingroups of true and false crabs. We find that morphological diversity of adults is larger in false crabs than in true crabs, indicating that taxonomic diversity and morphological diversity are not necessarily linked. The increasing morphological disparity of adults of true and false crabs with increasing phylogenetic distance furthermore indicates diverging evolution of the shield morphology of adult representatives of Meiura. Larvae of true crabs also show larger diversity than their adult counterparts, highlighting the importance of larvae for biodiversity studies. The megalopa phase of Meiura appears to be plesiomorphic, as it overlaps between true and false crabs and shows little diversity. Causes may be common evolutionary constraints on a developmental phase specialized for transitioning.

RESUMEN

High infestations of epibiont ciliates on vertebrates or invertebrates are normally related to aquaculture tanks or similar environments, and the importance of this relationship in natural habitats is often disregarded. Here, we describe the first record of high infestation of ciliates on Aegla serrana in South America and conduct a brief morphological and phylogenetic characterization of these ciliates. Our findings confirm that cases of high infestation of ciliates on metazoans can indeed occur in natural environments.

Abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), significantly impacts marine ecosystems and biodiversity by incidental capture known as ghost fishing. Such impacts were quantified during the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries' annual ALDFG cleanup operation in September 2023 by examining the characteristics of retrieved ALDFG and recording the taxonomically sorted catch abundance and biomass. A total of 307 specimens equaling 382 kg of biomass were caught in the recovered gillnets and king crab pots. Gillnets exhibited a 27.3 % greater catch abundance and 50.3 % higher biomass per ALDFG unit mass compared to king crab pots. Margalef, Menhinick, Simpson, Shannon, and Pielou diversity indices showed a more pronounced impact on species richness and biodiversity associated with recovered gillnets. This study introduces an approach to assess the impact of ghost fishing on ecosystems and biodiversity through ALDFG retrieval operations, instrumental in developing estimates of the total ghost fishing capture by ALDFG.

RESUMEN

A new hermit crab species of Paguridae, Trichopagurus spinibrachium n. sp., is described on the basis of a single male specimen collected from the anchialine environment of a semi-submerged marine cave in Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. It is morphologically similar to T. macrochela Komai & Osawa, 2005 and T. tenuidactylus Komai, 2013, but differs in the shape and armature of the ocular, antennular and antennal peduncles, chelipeds, and ambulatory legs. The new species may be distinguished from all known congeners by the stronger armature of the carpi and meri of both chelipeds. Trichopagurus spinibrachium n. sp. is the third species of the genus recorded from submarine caves, although it may also occur on nearby coral reefs as does T. macrochela and T. trichophthalmus (Forest, 1954).

Freshwater crustaceans of the genus Aegla are endemic to southern South America, and present greater richness in the river basins of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. However, recent studies have shown the enormous potential for discovering new species of Aegla in the state of Paran. In the last six year the number of species recorded has almost doubled, increasing from 9 to 16. In the present work, we expand the current knowledge about the diversity of Aegla in a set of poorly explored drainage basins in the western region of the state and describe a new species, Aegla urussanga n. sp., based on morphological and molecular evidence. A combination of morphological characters supports the new species: orbital spine absent, non-elevated epigastric prominences, robust protogastric lobes with scales, anterior dorsal margin of epimeron 2 armed and with pronounced concavity, sub-rectangular palmar crest of chelipeds, internal margin of the ventral face of the ischium of the cheliped with a proximal stout spine, a distal stout spine, and up to three tubercles with spiniform scales. The molecular data, based on partial COI sequences, also support the distinction of the new species from others that occur in adjacent river basins. The species with the smallest genetic distance from A. urussanga n. sp. is Aegla castro Schmitt, 1942 which occurs in the Iguau River basin. The new species occurs in distinct streams, probably interconnected in the past and currently isolated by the Itaipu reservoir and is the second species of Aegla described from the complex of drainage basins called Paran 3 basin.

The seta, a type of projection of the cuticle in crustaceans, has essential mechanical and sensory functions. Due to the diversity of their morphology and distribution patterns on the articles of different appendages, setae can be helpful as taxonomic characters. To assist future studies on the potential use of setae as a diagnostic character in aeglids, we used scanning electron microscopy to analyze the morphology of setae from the oral apparatus of Aegla longirostri Bond-Buckup & Buckup, 1994, and compared our data to the literature. We identified nine setal types (simple, serrate, stout serrate, sword, plumose, pappose, comb, serrulate, and cuspidate), of which the last two had not been previously described in adult aeglids. Our results are a first step towards future comparisons of setal morphology in the genus Aegla, which includes cryptic species complexes, to ascertain the usefulness of setae as a character to aid in the description of species of this group, which has a conserved general morphology.

Plastic is the most pervasive element of marine waste, with harmful impact on wildlife. By using iEcology (i.e., internet Ecology, use of online data sources as a new tool in ecological research), we report on the emergence of a novel behaviour in hermit crabs related to the use of plastic or other anthropogenic materials as protective shells. We analysed images posted on social media to identify 386 individuals with artificial shells - mainly plastic caps (85 %). We report that 10 of the world's 16 terrestrial hermit crabs use artificial shells, a behaviour observed on all of the Earth's tropical coasts. Four non-exclusive mechanisms may drive individual choice for artificial shells: sexual signaling, lightness of artificial shells, odour cues, and camouflage in a polluted environment. Further research is needed to determine the impact of this behaviour on hermit crab evolutionary trajectories.

The digestive system structure in pre-zoea and zoea I larvae of the red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus has been examined. During this development period, the digestive system consists of an esophagus, a stomach, a midgut (where the hepatopancreas ducts open), and a hindgut. The esophagus begins from the oral slit on the animal's ventral side and extends vertically up to the junction with the cardiac stomach. The latter is followed by the pyloric stomach. At the stages under study, crabs have a cardiac-pyloric valve and a pyloric filter in the stomach already developed. The midgut begins with an expansion in the cephalothorax, enters the pleon, grows narrower there, and extends to somite 3 of pleon. The hepatopancreas is represented by a symmetrical paired gland which occupies almost the entire cephalothorax space and opens with its ducts at the junction of the pyloric stomach with the midgut. The hepatopancreas is divided into the anterior and posterior lobes. At the pre-zoea stage, the anterior lobes are large and filled with yolk. At the zoea I stage, the anterior lobes are smaller relative to the entire hepatopancreas, and the posterior lobes increase and form tubular outgrowths. It has been shown that during the transition from pre-zoea to zoea I, the number of mitochondria in enterocytes increases and a peritrophic membrane forms in the midgut. These changes are probably associated with the transition to independent living and feeding.

Crabs are a large subtaxon of the Arthropoda, the most diverse and species-rich metazoan group. Several outstanding questions remain regarding crab diversification, including about the genomic capacitors of physiological and morphological adaptation, that cannot be answered with available genomic resources. Physiologically and ecologically diverse Anomuran porcelain crabs offer a valuable model for investigating these questions and hence genomic resources of these crabs would be particularly useful. Here, we present the first two genome assemblies of congeneric and sympatric Anomuran porcelain crabs, Petrolisthes cinctipes and Petrolisthes manimaculis from different microhabitats. Pacific Biosciences high-fidelity sequencing led to genome assemblies of 1.5 and 0.9 Gb, with N50s of 706.7 and 218.9 Kb, respectively. Their assembly length difference can largely be attributed to the different levels of interspersed repeats in their assemblies: The larger genome of P. cinctipes has more repeats (1.12 Gb) than the smaller genome of P. manimaculis (0.54 Gb). For obtaining high-quality annotations of 44,543 and 40,315 protein-coding genes in P. cinctipes and P. manimaculis, respectively, we used RNA-seq as part of a larger annotation pipeline. Contrarily to the large-scale differences in repeat content, divergence levels between the two species as estimated from orthologous protein-coding genes are moderate. These two high-quality genome assemblies allow future studies to examine the role of environmental regulation of gene expression in the two focal species to better understand physiological response to climate change, and provide the foundation for studies in fine-scale genome evolution and diversification of crabs.

Heterochely denotes the presence of dissimilarly sized chelipeds on opposite sides of the body, a prevalent occurrence in diverse crustaceans. Conversely, heterometry pertains to the quantifiable disparities in size between these chelipeds. Both chelipeds hold pivotal roles in activities such as foraging, mating, and defense. Consequently, individuals of both genders in heterochelic species exhibit this morphological pattern. Previous studies have identified sexual dimorphism in cheliped size, with males displaying larger major chelipeds compared to females, albeit solely relying on propodus length as a size proxy and focusing solely on the major cheliped. In our study, we meticulously examined 190 specimens of the common European hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus from two collections. We sought to elucidate allometric relationships and assess whether heterometry exhibited sex-based differences when adjusting for body size by using ratios. Our findings revealed that male chelipeds displayed hyperallometric growth relative to females, and all three calculated heterometry indices exhibited significant disparities between the sexes. Consequently, male specimens exhibited larger major and minor chelipeds, even when theoretically matched for body size with females. This phenomenon may be attributed, among other factors, to male-male contests. Should indirect mate selection favor males with larger chelipeds in proportion to their body size, this dynamic could potentiate sexual selection in their favor.

Crustaceans have successfully adapted to survive in their natural habitat, rich in microorganisms, due to the presence of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in their organism. They achieve this adaptation despite lacking the highly specific adaptive immune system found in vertebrates. One valuable source of AMPs is the hepatopancreas, a waste product from crab fishery and its processing. Applying zymographic and spectrophotometric techniques, we discovered a small peptide (approximately 5 kDa) within a low molecular weight protein fraction extracted from the acetone powder of the red king crab hepatopancreas. This peptide hydrolyzes both M. lysodeikticus cell wall and M. lysodeikticus cell wall polysaccharide, while showing no activity against gelatin. The found peptide may be of interest for application in medicine, biotechnology, and the food industry, for example as a bio-preservative.

Organisms use information to make adaptive decisions in various contexts, including aggression. Potentially weaker, but better-informed, contestants should give up earlier to reduce fighting costs by using information related to their own lower success such as their size relative to their opponent and past contest outcomes to make this choice. Here, we examined whether intruders of the hermit crab Pagurus minutus could use information about their (1) smaller size, (2) past contest defeats, (3) opponent's past wins, or (4) relationship in the dominance hierarchy to their opponent when making a decision to give up during male-male contests for a female. In all trials, we randomly matched a smaller intruder with a larger opponent that was guarding a female. Our analyses suggest that P. minutus intruders can use all four types of information to decide whether to give up a contest without escalation or decrease its duration after escalation; it is the first species of Pagurus reported to do so, and the second reported to be able to distinguish familiar opponents from others in the context of male-male contests. These findings demonstrate the importance of cognitive abilities in minimizing costs when competing for vital resources.

Habitat heterogeneity promotes species diversity by providing a variety of abiotic and biotic conditions, whose impact on performance varies among species. Then, mobile species would be expected to move to areas whose conditions maximize their fitness. However, biotic pressures such as interspecific competition can push subordinate species into suboptimal areas, impeding this matching. The tropical hermit crab Clibanarius albidigitus occupies mostly upper intertidal sites where they can experience extreme environmental conditions. Meanwhile, its stronger agonistic competitor, Calcinus californiensis, mostly inhabits more moderate conditions at the mid intertidal. We estimated the avoidance threshold of the two hermit crab species to increasing water temperatures to help explain their intertidal distribution. We also compared the avoidance threshold of Cli. albidigitus to rising temperatures when presented alone and in the presence of chemical cues of its competitor to assess potential competitive niche exclusion. The avoidance threshold was measured in experimental tanks with a ramp that led from the water to an air-exposed platform; the threshold was defined as the temperature at which individuals emerged and remained air-exposed. Clibanarius albidigitus emerged at a higher temperature than its competitor, showing a higher thermal tolerance and potentially explaining its distribution in the upper intertidal. In the presence of Cal. californiensis, Cli. albidigitus emerged at lower temperature than when alone, likely as a strategy to reduce competition with stronger agonistic competitors, even at the cost of coping with harsh conditions. Our results support the hypothesis that competitive habitat exclusion contributes to explaining hermit crab assemblages.

Profilicollis rancoensis n. sp. is the tenth species of Profilicollis Meyer, 1931 which includes 9 other species mostly known from marine decapod crabs and shore birds. Cystacanths of P. rancoensis are described from the dominant freshwater crab Aegla abtao in Ranco Lake, Chile and are morphologically distinguished from cystacanths of the 9 other species based on a combination of 4 characters. These are body size, number of proboscis hook rows, number of hooks per row, and length of the largest anterior 2-4 hooks. Male and female cystacanths of P. rancoensis are 2.10-3.33 mm long having an ovoid proboscis with 14 rows of 6-7 hooks per row, with the largest anterior 2-4 hooks being 105-110 micrometers long; the anterior trunk has many small spines in 70-80 concentric rings, each with 50-60 spines around them; hook roots are simple, directed posteriorly, about as long as the blades anteriorly with unremarkable anterior manubria; the cephalic ganglion are in mid-receptacle just anterior to the level of the anterior trunk; the lemnisci are long and slender; the testes are in the anterior trunk, posterior trunk, or one in each; the primordia of 2 tubular cement glands are evident; strong bundles of fibers link the anterior and posterior trunk; and the posterior trunk has a corrugated surface cuticula. Molecular analysis (COI and 18S) sequences coincided with the morphology and support its taxonomy. The phylogenetic profile revealed that P. rancoensis n. sp. fell into the Profilicollis clade. Both sequences showed low genetic variation, and three different haplotypes were found. The new species was more closely related to P. botulus (Van Cleave, 1916) Witenberg, 1932 than to other Profilicollis species.


Title: Révision du concept de Profilicollis Meyer, 1931 avec la description de Profilicollis rancoensis n. sp. (Acanthocephala, Polymorphidae) du crabe d'eau douce Aegla abtao Schmitt, 1942 (Decapoda, Anomura) au Chili, avec une clé des espèces congénères. Abstract: Profilicollis rancoensis n. sp. est la dixième espèce de Profilicollis Meyer, 1931 qui comprend neuf autres espèces principalement connues de crabes décapodes marins et d'oiseaux de rivage. Les cystacanthes de P. rancoensis sont décrits chez le crabe d'eau douce dominant Aegla abtao dans le lac Ranco, au Chili et se distinguent morphologiquement des cystacanthes des neuf autres espèces sur la base d'une combinaison de quatre caractères. Il s'agit de la taille du corps, du nombre de rangées de crochets du proboscis, du nombre de crochets par rangée et de la longueur des 2 à 4 crochets antérieurs les plus grands. Les cystacanthes mâles et femelles de P. rancoensis mesurent de 2,10 à 3,33 mm de long et ont une trompe ovoïde avec 14 rangées de 6 à 7 crochets par rangée, les 2 à 4 crochets antérieurs les plus grands mesurant 105 à 110 micromètres de long ; le tronc antérieur a de nombreuses petites épines en 70-80 anneaux concentriques chacun avec 50-60 épines ; les racines des crochets sont simples, dirigées vers l'arrière, à peu près aussi longues que les lames vers l'avant avec une manubrie antérieure sans particularité ; les ganglions céphaliques sont au milieu du réceptacle juste en avant du niveau du tronc antérieur ; les lemnisques sont longs et minces ; les testicules sont dans le tronc antérieur, le tronc postérieur ou un dans chacun ; les ébauches des 2 glandes cémentaires tubulaires sont évidentes ; de solides faisceaux de fibres relient le tronc antérieur et postérieur ; le tronc postérieur a une cuticule à surface ondulée. Les séquences d'analyse moléculaire (COI et 18S) coïncidaient avec la morphologie et confirmaient sa taxonomie. Le profil phylogénétique a révélé que P. rancoensis n. sp. appartient au clade Profilicollis. Les deux séquences ont montré une faible variation génétique et trois haplotypes différents ont été trouvés. La nouvelle espèce était plus proche de P. botulus (Van Cleave, 1916) Witenberg, 1932 que des autres espèces de Profilicollis.

Spatial learning is a complex cognitive skill and ecologically important trait scarcely studied in crustaceans. We investigated the ability of the Pacific (Ecuadorian) hermit crab Coenobita compressus, to learn an allocentric spatial task using a palatable novel food as reward. Crabs were trained to locate the reward in a single session of eleven consecutive trials and tested subsequently, for short- (5 min) and long-term memory 1, 3 and 7 days later. Our results indicate that crabs were able to learn the location of the reward as they showed a reduction in the time required to find the food whenever it was present, suggesting a visuo-spatial and olfactory cue-guided task resolution. Moreover, crabs also remember the location of the reward up to 7 days after training using spatial cues only (without the food), as evidenced by the longer investigation time they spent in the learned food location than in any other part of the experimental arena, suggesting a visuo-spatial memory formation. This study represents the first description of allocentric spatial long-term memory in a terrestrial hermit crab.

This study aims to reduce the cost of allergen testing for Guangzhou, China by limiting the number of allergens for which patients are tested, and provide a testing panel to improve diagnostic and therapeutic efficiency. This retrospective study of real-world data from 2012 to 2019 included 39,570 patients with suspected allergies in Guangzhou, southern China. All the patients were tested for one or more of the following allergens serum specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE): Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae, cat dander, dog dander, Artemisia vulgaris, Aspergillus fumigatus, Alternaria alternata, Blattella germanica, egg whites, milk, wheat, peanuts, soybeans, Cancer pagurus, and Penaeus monodon by PhadiaCAP 1000. Totally, only the positive rates of allergens sIgE in D. farinae, D. pteronyssinus, milk, egg whites, B. germanica, C. pagurus, A. alternata, and P. monodon were > 10%, the other allergens were between 4-7%. Moreover, among the allergic diseases, dust mites exhibited the overall highest positive rate, followed by milk and B. germanica. In children, milk was the main allergen, whereas in adults, mites, cockroaches, shrimp, and crab allergens had higher positive rates. The optimal scale analysis shows that the multiple sensitization classification of patients can be divided into three categories: I D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus; II. C. pagurus, P. monodon, and B. germanica; III. Milk and egg whites. Generally, a panel including 4 allergens can detect > 90% of the potential allergy in this local population. In Guangzhou, southern China, D. farinae, milk, B. germanica, and A. alternata as a panel screening allergy for suspected allergic patients was suggested base on this study.
