OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to evaluate the in vitro effect of zinc oxide-eugenol paste (ZOE) on planktonic aggregates (EfPA) and biofilm (EfBio) of Enterococcus faecalis, focusing on their morphological aspects observed and analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM). DESIGN: The eugenol and paste were characterized by Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. The effect of ZOE on EfPA and EfBio was evaluated by a direct-contact test through colony counting and crystal violet staining protocol. AFM images of untreated and treated EfPA and EfBio growth on bovine dentin were obtained to analyze the morphological damage caused by the treatments. RESULTS: The characterization showed high purity in the eugenol composition and chemical interaction between the components of the paste. A bactericidal effect on aggregates was observed after 6 h of exposure, and on biofilm after 24 h of treatment (p < 0.001). A disruptive effect on the biofilm was also evident. AFM images revealed the formation of EfPA, with a notable presence of an exopolysaccharide matrix. After 6 h of ZOE treatment, there was a significant increase in the size and surface roughness profile of treated cells (p < 0.05). Loss of typical cell morphology was observed after 24 h. The effect on the biofilm showed a tendency towards a less condensed biofilm pattern in the treated group, with no differences in surface roughness. CONCLUSION: ZOE presents bactericidal action on EfPA and EfBio, promoting significant morphological changes after treatment, especially in the aggregates.

This study investigated the potential for tooth discoloration of root canal filling pastes used in pediatric dentistry. Sixty bovine incisors were sectioned 2 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction and allocated into 6 groups (n = 10) according to the type of filling material used: G1- Zinc oxide-eugenol sealer; G2- Zinc oxide-eugenol and iodoform paste; G3- Calcium hydroxide (CH) and zinc oxide paste; G4- CH, zinc oxide, and iodoform paste; G5- CH and iodoform paste; and G6- Control. Polyethylene glycol 400 was used as a vehicle for CH-containing pastes. Color measurements were taken at specific intervals: preceding endodontic treatment (T0) and at successive points of 1 month (T1), 2 months (T2), 3 months (T3), and 1 year (T4) after the placement of the filling material. The color change (∆E) was calculated using the CIELab formula. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA, followed by Tukey's post hoc test (α = 5%). Significant differences were observed among the filling materials and time intervals (p <0.001). All groups exhibited color changes over time, except G1 and G5, which showed color changes only after 1 year. G1 and G2 demonstrated the highest ∆E values, with a statistically significant difference observed only at T2 when compared to G3 (p = 0.008). Root canal filling materials used in primary teeth have the potential to induce tooth discoloration.

Introducción: la persistencia de microorganismos en los conductos radiculares es uno de los principales factores del fracaso endodóncico. Por ello la importancia de conocer las propiedades antimicrobianas de los distintos tipos de selladores. Objetivo: realizar una comparación con base en la evidencia disponible sobre la actividad antimicrobiana de los diferentes cementos selladores en endodoncia. Material y métodos: la información fue recopilada de las bases de datos PubMed y Google Académico en el idioma inglés y español, publicados en el periodo 2014-2023. Resultados: un gran número de microorganismos se encuentran presentes en los diferentes tipos de infecciones de origen endodóncico, se han identificado más de 500 especies microbianas, entre ellas bacterias, hongos, arqueas y virus. Los cementos selladores se pueden clasificar según su composición química, en cementos a base de óxido de zinc-eugenol, hidróxido de calcio, a base de ionómero de vidrio, silicona, resina y biocerámicos. Conclusión: los cementos selladores que mostraron mayor actividad antimicrobiana contra los microorganismos persistentes fueron los cementos a base de óxido de zinc-eugenol, resina y biocerámicos. Sin embargo, se identificó que cada autor utilizó diferentes métodos y tiempos, por lo tanto, no es posible lograr definir con exactitud qué cemento sellador posee la mejor capacidad antimicrobiana (AU)


Introduction: the persistence of microorganisms in root canals is one of the main factors of endodontic failure. Therefore, the importance of knowing the antimicrobial properties of the different types of sealants. Objective: to make a comparison based on the available evidence on the antimicrobial activity of the different endodontics sealers. Material and methods: the information was collected from PubMed and Google Academic databases in English and Spanish, published in the period 2014-2023. Results: a large number of microorganisms are present in the different types of infections of endodontic origin, more than 500 microbiological species have been identified, including bacteria, fungi, archaea and viruses. Sealer cements can be classified according to their chemical composition, into cements based on zinc oxide-eugenol, calcium hydroxide, based on glass ionomer, silicone, resin and bioceramics. Conclusion: sealer cements that showed the highest antimicrobial activity against persistent microorganisms were zinc oxide-eugenol, resin, and bioceramic-based cements. However, it was identified that each author used different methods and times, therefore, it is not possible to accurately define which sealer cement has the best antimicrobial capacity (AU)

The present study evaluated the antibiofilm and antimicrobial effects of temporary restorative materials on root canals after an intra-oral challenge. Seventy roots were endodontically treated and divided into 5 groups: high-viscosity glass ionomer (HV-GIC), light-activated glass ionomer (RM-GIC), zinc-oxide cement without eugenol (ZO), zinc-oxide cement with eugenol (ZOE), and unsealed roots (negative control). For 28 days, 14 participants used intra-oral devices with five roots, and drops of sucrose were applied onto them. The amount of biofilm and the bacterial counts were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn, and by two-way ANOVA and Tukey (α = 0.05). HV-GIC and RM-GIC better inhibit biofilm, followed by ZO and ZOE. Unsealed roots had the largest biofilm accumulation (p = 0.002) and higher bacterial penetration than restored roots (p = 0.023). A low amount of Streptococcus was found in RM-GIC and ZOE-restored roots without difference from HV-GIC (p = 0.021). The low amount of Enterococcus (p = 0.003) was found in the ZOE-restored roots, without difference from GICs.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic treatment of primary molars represents one of the challenges in pediatric dentistry. There is a lack of consensus in the literature about the endodontic techniques and filling paste for primary teeth with pulp necrosis. AIM: To compare the effectiveness of the LSTR technique (lesion sterilization and tissue repair) with CTZ paste (chloramphenicol, tetracycline, zinc oxide and eugenol) and pulpectomy with ZOE paste (zinc oxide and eugenol) in the treatment of primary molars with pulp necrosis. DESIGN: Eighty-eight primary molars with pulp necrosis from 70 children between the ages of 3 and 8 years were included. The teeth were randomized to the LSTR with CTZ paste group or pulpectomy with ZOE paste group. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed at 18, 24, 30 and 36 months. RESULTS: At 36 months, clinical success was 86.4% in LSTR with CTZ paste and 90.9% in pulpectomy with ZOE paste (p = .45). Radiographic success was 43.2% in both groups (p = 1.00). The overall success was 40.9% in LSTR with CTZ paste and 43.2% in pulpectomy with ZOE paste (p = 1.00). CONCLUSION: After 36 months of evaluation, the effectiveness of the LSTR technique with CTZ paste and pulpectomy with ZOE paste was similar for the treatment of primary molars with pulp necrosis.

Aim: To evaluate the resistance of the union between a glass fiber post and radicular dentine after cleaning the root with 17% EDTA and filling with different endodontic cements. Methods: Forty uniradicular bovine incisors were removed to obtain root lengths of 18 mm. Endodontic treatment was performed on all roots using different filling cements (zinc oxide and eugenol-based, OZE; cement based on epoxy resin, AH) and cleaning solutions (saline, SA or EDTA), which made it possible to obtain four groups: OZESA, OZEEDTA, AHSA and AHEDTA. Subsequently, 12 mm of filling material was removed from the roots, and they were prepared to receive fiber posts luted with resin cement. To execute the mechanical cycles (2x106 cycles, 90 N, 4 Hz), coronal reconstruction was performed with a silicon matrix. The roots were then sliced (2-mm thick) to perform the push-out test. The results were analyzed using analysis of variance (one factor and two factors) and Tukey's test (α=0,05). Results: Bond strength (Mpa) was significantly higher for OZEEDTA (9,18) and AHEDTA (8,70) than for OZESA (6,06) AHSA (8,7). OZEEDTA also presented the highest values in the cervical region (15,18) but was significantly lower in the apical region (2,99). However, AHEDTA had a homogeneous bond strength in all thirds. Conclusion: Regardless of the endodontic cement used, EDTA was used as an irrigating solution, culminating in a higher bond strength between the glass fiber post and dentin

AIM: The aim of this non-inferiority randomized clinical trial was to compare the efficacy of an iodoform-based paste (Guedes-Pinto -(GP)) as a filling material in pulpectomies of primary teeth, and a standard material composed by calcium hydroxide and iodoform (CaOH/Iodof paste; Vitapex® ). DESIGN: A total of 104 teeth from 61 children (3-8 years old) were randomly allocated to two groups according to filling materials. Children were followed up for 24 months. The primary endpoint was the treatment success rate evaluated through clinical and radiographic examinations at follow-up, and the secondary outcome was the analysis of the canal filling quality. Differences in the proportion of treatment success was calculated based on 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) and with the Miettinen and Nurminen method in the intention-to-treat population, considering a -20% of the non-inferiority limit. RESULTS: From 104 randomized teeth, 102 were followed up after 24 months (attrition rate of 1.9%). The success rate of teeth treated with the GP paste was 86.8% (95% CI: 69.9-94.9) and 78.4% (95% CI: 61.8-89.1) with the CaOH/Iodof paste. Consequently, a non-inferiority of the GP paste was observed when compared to the CaOH/Iodof paste (P < .001). CONCLUSION: The GP paste has a non-inferior success rate than the CaOH/Iodof paste used as filling material for pulpectomy in primary teeth.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of lesion sterilization and tissue repair (LSTR) antibiotic paste comprised of chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and zinc oxide and eugenol (CTZ) versus zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) pulpectomy in the treatment of primary molars with pulp necrosis. Methods: A total of 70 three- to eight-year-old subjects with 88 primary mandibular molars with pulp necrosis were included. The teeth were randomized to the CTZ group or ZOE group. The time taken to perform both techniques was recorded. The parents of the children and the dentist who performed clinical evaluations were blind to the group assignment, although the radiographic evaluator could see the difference in treatments. Clinical and radiographic assessments were performed at three, six, nine, and 12 months. Results: At the 12-month evaluation, the clinical success was 86.4 percent for CTZ and 90.9 percent for ZOE (P=0.50), the radiographic success was 75.0 percent for CTZ and 72.7 percent for ZOE (P=0.81), and the overall success was 70.5 percent for CTZ and 72.7 percent for ZOE (P=0.81). The mean time taken to perform was 61.4 (±20.5 standard deviation) minutes for CTZ and 145.1 (±53.2) minutes for ZOE (P<0.001). Conclusions: At 12 months, both techniques presented no significant difference in success rates for nonvital pulp therapy in primary molars with necrosis. The lesion sterilization and tissue repair procedure time using chloramphenicol, tetracycline, zinc oxide, and eugenol was significantly shorter than for a zinc oxide eugenol pulpectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Bio-C Pulpecto (Bio-CP) was recently developed as the first bioceramic root filling material for primary teeth. To evaluate the physicochemical properties of radiopacity, setting time, pH, cytocompatibility and potential of Bio-CP to induce mineralisation, compared with (1) Calen thickened with zinc oxide (Calen-ZO), and (2) zinc oxide and eugenol (ZOE). METHODOLOGY: Physicochemical properties were evaluated according to ISO 6876. Saos-2 (human osteoblast-like cell line) exposed to extracts of the materials were subjected to assays of methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium, neutral red, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and mineralised nodule production. The results were analysed using one-way or two-way ANOVA and Tukey's or Bonferroni's post-tests (α=0.05). RESULTS: All the materials showed radiopacity higher than 3 mm Al. Bio-CP had lower pH than Calen-ZO, but higher pH than ZOE. Calen-ZO and Bio-CP did not set. The setting time for ZOE was 110 min. The cytocompatibility order was Calen-ZO > Bio-CP > ZOE (1:2, 1:4 dilutions) and Calen-ZO > Bio-CP = ZOE (1:12, 1:24 dilutions) and Calen-ZO = Bio-CP > ZOE (1:32 dilution). Bio-CP induced greater ALP activity at 7 days, and greater mineralised nodule production, compared to Calen-ZO (p<0.05). Conclusions Bio-CP showed adequate physicochemical properties, cytocompatibility and potential to induce mineralisation.

Introdução: O derivado da matriz do esmalte (Emdogain®) é um extrato de proteína usado para cicatrização periodontal. Objetivo: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar radiograficamente a resposta pulpar e periapical de dentes de cães após pulpotomia e uso do gel derivado da matriz do esmalte (Emdogain®). Métodos: A pulpotomia foi realizada em 30 dentes (60 raízes) de 3 cães, e o tecido pulpar remanescente foi recoberto com os seguintes materiais: Grupos 1 e 4: gel derivado da matriz do esmalte (Emdogain®); Grupos 2 e 5: hidróxido de cálcio; Grupos 3 e 6: óxido de zinco e cimento de eugenol. Após 10 dias (Grupos 1-3) e 75 dias (Grupos 4-6) foram obtidas radiografias periapicais e a avaliação radiográfica foi realizada considerando-se: a integridade da lâmina dura, presença de áreas de rarefação óssea periapical, reabsorção radicular (interna e externa) e formação de ponte de dentina. Resultados: No período de 10 dias, todos os espécimes dos Grupos 1-3 apresentaram ausência de rarefação óssea periapical, reabsorção radicular (interna e externa) e formação de ponte dentinária. No período de 75 dias, os Grupos 4-6 não apresentaram formação de ponte dentinária em nenhum espécime. Áreas de rarefação óssea periapical foram observadas em 100% das raízes no Grupo 4, 62,5% das raízes no Grupo 6 e em 25% das raízes nos Grupos 5. Conclusão: O uso do gel derivado da matriz do esmalte (Emdogain®) como material para capeamento após a pulpotomia levou à formação de lesões periapicais e não induziu a deposição de tecido mineralizado (AU).


Introduction: The enamel matrix derivative (Emdogain®) is a protein extract used for periodontal healing. The objective of this study was to evaluate radiographically the pulpal and periapical response of dogs teeth after pulpotomy and use of enamel matrix derivative gel (Emdogain®). Methods: Pulpotomy was performed in 30 teeth (60 roots) from 3 dogs and the remaining pulp tissue was capped with the following materials: Groups 1 and 4: enamel matrix derivative gel (Emdogain®); Groups 2 and 5: calcium hydroxide; Groups 3 and 6: zinc oxide and eugenol cement. After 10 days (Groups 1-3) and 75 days (Groups 4-6) periapical radiographs were obtained and the radiographic evaluation was performed considering the integrity of the lamina dura, presence of areas of periapical bone rarefaction, root resorption (internal and external) and dentin bridge formation. Results: In the 10- day period, all specimens in Groups 1-3 presented absence of periapical bone rarefaction, absence of root resorption (internal and external) and absence of dentin bridge formation. In the 75-day period, Groups 4-6 did not present dentin bridge formation in any specimen. Periapical bone rarefaction areas were observed in 100% of the roots in Group 4, 62,5% of the roots in Group 6 and in 25% of the roots in Groups 5. Conclusion: The use of enamel matrix derivative gel (Emdogain®) as a capping material after pulpotomy lead to formation of periapical lesions and did not induce deposition of mineralized tissue(AU).

Evaluate the cytocompatibility of Calen®/ZO, Calcicur®, Vitapex®, Endoflas®, and zinc oxide/eugenol-based (ZOE) root canal pastes (RCP) to human primary osteoblasts (HPO) through a simplified model for primary teeth. The model employed pipette tips filled with 0.037 g of paste, exposed to 185 µL of culture medium for 24 h (n = 6). Release of components was analysed by Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-NMR). HPO were exposed to conditioned media for 24 h. Cell viability was assessed by cell density and metabolic activity, and release of interleukin 6 (IL-6), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) by immunological assay. Physicochemical properties and antimicrobial efficacy were also evaluated. 1H-NMR spectra analysis showed similarity between ZOE, Endoflas®, Calcicur®, and Vitapex® compared to Calen®/ZO and positive control, which showed distinct released components. Calen®/ZO and Calcicur® exhibited high alkaline pH in all periods and showed similar solubility. Calen®/ZO, ZOE, and Vitapex® showed similar flow rate. Calen®/ZO, Calcicur®, and Vitapex® did not exhibit antimicrobial efficacy. Calen®/ZO presented cytotoxicity (p < 0.05). Pastes did not increase IL-6 release compared to control. Apart from Vitapex®, all pastes significantly induced VEGF/bFGF release. Interactive effects among released products may affect biological response to filling pastes. Calcicur®, ZOE, Endoflas® and Calen®/ZO presented good to moderate cytocompatibility, with low impact on pro-inflammatory cytokine release and induction of growth factors of interest to tissue repair. This simplified model, specific for the evaluation of the cytocompatibility of RCPs on primary teeth, suggests how these pastes might contribute to bone repair in clinical situations of apical periodontitis in children.

Bio-CP had lower pH than Calen-ZO, but higher pH than ZOE. Calen-ZO and Bio-CP did not set. The setting time for ZOE was 110 min. The cytocompatibility order was Calen-ZO > Bio-CP > ZOE (1:2, 1:4 dilutions) and Calen-ZO > Bio-CP = ZOE (1:12, 1:24 dilutions) and Calen-ZO = Bio-CP > ZOE (1:32 dilution). Bio-CP induced greater ALP activity at 7 days, and greater mineralised nodule production, compared to Calen-ZO (p<0.05). Conclusions Bio-CP showed adequate physicochemical properties, cytocompatibility and potential to induce mineralisation.

Objective: When provisional acrylic crowns are used for a long time, they become more susceptible to marginal leakage by cariogenic bacteria. The objectives of this pilot clinical study were to compare cement based on zinc oxide-eugenol and calcium hydroxide by contamination with Streptococcus mutans, and calculate the sample size for the continuation of this study. Methods: Individuals receiving provisional crowns and following inclusion/exclusion criteria, were randomly distributed into 2 groups: zinc oxide-eugenol (n=8); calcium hydroxide (n=9). The temporary crowns were made by a blind researcher and cemented by another. Patients were also blinded by the cement used inside their crowns. After 2 months, a cement sample from the crowns' peripheral inner face was collected, placed in a tube containing 1 mL of sterile saline, serially diluted, plated on Mitis Salivarius Bacitracin agar, and incubated for 48 hours. Colony-forming units (CFU/mL) were counted. A statistical power analysis was performed to calculate sample size (1-ß=80%) and the Mann Whitney test to compare both cements (α=0.05). Results: Both cements were contaminated with S. mutans, with an average of 166.6 x 102 CFU/mL for calcium hydroxide and 435.3 x 102 CFU/mL for zinc oxide-eugenol, with no significant difference (p=0.311). The sample size calculated for this study was 36 per group. Conclusion: This pilot study suggests that there is important contamination inside provisional crowns used for two months, independent of the cement. The continuation of this study is needed, with a bigger sample size, to enable a comparison between the cements.


Objetivo: Quando coroas dentais provisórias são utilizadas por um longo período, elas se tornam susceptíveis à infiltração marginal por bactérias cariogênicas. O objetivo deste estudo clínico piloto foi comparar os cimentos a base de óxido de zinco e eugenol e hidróxido de cálcio pela contaminação com Streptococcus mutans e calcular o tamanho amostral para continuação deste estudo. Métodos: Indivíduos recebendo coroas provisórias e seguindo critérios de inclusão/exclusão, foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos: óxido de zinco e eugenol (n=8); hidróxido de cálcio (n=9). As coroas provisórias foram feitas por um pesquisador cego e cimentadas por outro. Os pacientes também foram cegos quanto ao cimento utilizado dentro de suas coroas. Depois de 2 meses, amostras de cimentos foram coletadas da face interna periférica das coroas, colocadas em um tubo contendo 1 mL de solução salina estéril, diluídas de forma seriada, plaqueadas em ágar Mitis Salivarius Bacitracina e incubadas por 48 horas. Unidades formadoras de colônias (UFC/mL) foram contadas. Um teste de poder estatístico foi realizado para calcular o tamanho amostral (1-ß=80%) e o teste de Mann Whitney para comparar os dois cimentos (α=0.05). Resultados: Os dois cimentos foram contaminados com S. mutans, com uma média de 166.6 x 102 UFC/mL para o hidróxido de cálcio e 435.3 x 102 UFC/mL para o óxido de zinco e eugenol, com nenhuma diferença significativa (p=0.311). O cálculo amostral para este estudo foi 36 indivíduos por grupo. Conclusão: Este estudo piloto sugere que existe importante contaminação dentro de coroas provisórias utilizadas por 2 meses, independente do cimento. A continuação deste estudo é necessária, com maior tamanho amostral, para possibilitar a comparação entre os cimentos.

Objetivo: avaliar, in vitro, a dureza superficial e profunda de dois tipos diferentes de resina composta, quandoem contato com o cimento de óxido de zinco e eugenol (IRM®). Métodos: foram selecionadas as resinasCharisma® e Vittra® e confeccionados 80 corpos de prova, sendo 40 para cada marca de compósito, queforam divididos em oito grupos (n=10) conforme o contato (imediato, 7 dias, 14 dias) ou não (grupo controle)com o eugenol. Colocou-se num pote dappen uma porção de IRM e um espécime de resina pronto, que,após a presa do material restaurador temporário e a remoção do exemplar colocado, gerou o molde pararealização das amostras em contato com o eugenol, sendo armazenado em água em temperatura ambiente,para os subgrupos 7 e 14 dias. Em sequência, foi inserido um único incremento de resina composta e polimerizadopor 40 segundos, gerando os espécimes que foram armazenados em local seco para serem submetidosao teste de microdureza Vickers sob uma carga de 300 gramas, com tempo de penetração de 10 segundos.Os dados obtidos foram analisados pelo teste ANOVA, a um nível de significância de p<0,05. Resultados:somente o grupo da resina Charisma® que teve contato imediato com eugenol não atingiu 80% de durezaprofunda em relação à superficial. Entretanto, para todos os grupos analisados, tanto a dureza superficialquanto a profunda aumentaram após o contato com o eugenol em relação ao grupo controle. Conclusão: oeugenol não influenciou negativamente a dureza das resinas compostas.(AU)


Objective: to evaluate, in vitro, the superficial and deep hardness of two different types of composite resin when in contact with zinc oxide eugenol cement (IRM). Method: Charisma® and Vittra® resins were selected and 80 specimens were made, 40 for each composite brand that were divided into eight groups (n = 10) according to contact (immediate, 7 days, 14 days) or no (control group) with eugenol. A portion of IRM and a ready-made resin specimen were placed in a dappen pot, which after setting the temporary restorative material and removing the placed specimen, generated the template for making the samples in contact with eugenol, being stored in water in room temperature for subgroups 7 and 14 days. In sequence, a single increment of composite was inserted and polymerized resin for 40 seconds, generating specimens that were stored in a dry place to be submitted to the Vickers microhardness test under a load of 300 grams, with a penetration time of 10 seconds. The data obtained were analyzed by the ANOVA test, at a significance level of p <0.05. Results: only the Charisma® resin group that had immediate contact with eugenol did not reach 80% deep hardness in relation to superficial hardness. However, for all groups analyzed, both superficial and deep hardness increased after contact with eugenol compared to the control group. Conclusion: eugenol did not negatively influence the hardness of composite resins.(AU)

Dentin and pulp are considered interdependent substrates, known as the dentin-pulp complex. In front of injuries such as caries and trauma, this complex should be protected with restorative materials considered to be protective agents. An ideal material should have properties such as biocompatibility, be antimicrobial, be insoluble in the oral environment, be thermal and electrically insulating, have therapeutic potential, and adequate mechanical properties. As these characteristics are not found in all materials, the dentist must know the advantages and disadvantages of those that are available. This study aimed to perform a critical review of the indirect materials indicated for the protection of dentin-pulp vitality (PDPV) to ensure the success of indirect pulp treatment in primary teeth. A search was carried out in books, theses, dissertations, monographs, printed articles and databases, PubMed, SciELO, and MEDLINE. According to the literature, the success in protecting the dentin-pulp vitality is achieved through an excellent marginal seal, preventing bacterial infiltration in the dentin and controlling the progression of caries. Further clinical studies are needed to evaluate other outcomes after indirect pulp treatment. There isn't a material that has all the desired characteristics for PDPV, and recent studies show that the key to PDPV isn't found in the protective material, but in the restorations marginal sealing, enabling the inactivation of the progression of dental caries.


A dentina e a polpa são consideradas substratos interdependentes, conhecido como complexo dentino-pulpar. Frente a injúrias como cárie e traumatismo, deve-se realizar a proteção desse complexo, baseando-se na inserção de materiais restauradores considerados agentes protetores. Os materiais considerados ideais devem apresentar propriedades como: biocompatibilidade, ser antimicrobiano, ser insolúvel ao meio bucal, ser isolante térmico e elétrico, ter potencial terapêutico e propriedades mecânicas adequadas. Como essas características não são encontradas em todos os materiais, é importante que o cirurgião-dentista conheça as vantagens e as desvantagens daqueles que estão disponíveis comercialmente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão crítica da literatura sobre os materiais indicados para proteção indireta da vitalidade dentino-pulpar (PVDP), em dentes decíduos. Para isso, foram pesquisados livros, teses, dissertações, monografias, artigos impressos e das bases de dados, PubMed, SciELO e MEDLINE. De acordo com a literatura, observou-se que a garantia de êxito na proteção da vitalidade dentino-pulpar é alcançada por meio de um ótimo selamento marginal, impedindo a infiltração bacteriana na dentina e controlando a progressão da cárie. São necessários mais estudos clínicos que avaliem outros desfechos após o tratamento indireto da polpa. Não existe um material que possua todas as características desejadas para a PVDP, e estudos recentes demonstram que a chave não se encontra no material protetor, mas sim na vedação marginal das restaurações, propiciando a inativação da progressão da cárie dentária.

Apical periodontal repair begins when the periapical or pulp lesion has completely resolved. This may happen immediately after treatment if the filling material causes little or no irritation of periapical tissues, and particularly if the material is fully contained within the canal. When it leaks, a foreign body granuloma forms and persists for some months or indefinitely, depending on the composition of the filling material. Materials containing calcium hydroxide with no resin components undergo phagocytosis and disappear in some months, as macrophages gradually remove them. Materials containing resins, silicone, ionomers, zinc oxide-eugenol, bioceramics or gutta-percha remain in the site and induce the formation of foreign body granulomas. Although this does not preclude tooth movement, patients should be followed up every three months using periapical images to control the position of the material in relation to the tooth apex. "Pseudo" overfilling may be avoided if permanent filling is delayed until the time when orthodontic treatment is completed.

RESUMO Os dentes tratados endodonticamente podem ser movimentados, e não representam contraindicação para o tratamento ortodôntico. O reparo periodontal apical se inicia a partir do momento em que a causa da lesão pulpar e/ou periapical é eliminada. Isso ocorre de maneira imediata se o material obturador for pouco ou nada agressivo aos tecidos periapicais, especialmente se estiver limitado ao canal. Quando extravasado, haverá a formação de granuloma do tipo corpo estranho por alguns meses ou permanentemente, dependendo da composição do material obturador. Os materiais à base de hidróxido de cálcio sem componentes resinosos são fagocitáveis e, em alguns meses, desaparecem do local, pois os macrófagos irão gradativamente removê-los. Os materiais à base de resina, silicone, ionômero, óxido de zinco e eugenol, biocerâmicos e guta-percha permanecerão no local, induzindo granulomas periapicais do tipo corpo estranho, o que não inviabiliza a movimentação dentária, mas devem ser acompanhados a cada três meses com imagens periapicais, para um controle de sua relação espacial com o ápice dentário. A "pseudossobreobturação" pode ser evitada se a obturação definitiva for postergada para quando o tratamento ortodôntico terminar.

BACKGROUND: Achieving a void-free root canal filling is a challenge in current clinical pulpectomy practice. AIM: To compare filling effectiveness and internal voids of root filling materials and obturation techniques in resin-prototyped primary incisors by micro-CT. DESIGN: Fifty prototypes were instrumented and randomly divided (n = 10) according to the filling materials (Vitapex® , ZOE, Calcicur® , Feapex, and Calen® -ZO) and obturation technique: lentulo or pressure syringe (n = 5). The specimens were micro-CT scanned (pixel size = 7.83 µm) and reconstructed, and the total volume of filled canal (%FC) and internal voids (%IV) of the bulk filling material was calculated. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to detect differences and interactions among groups. RESULTS: Calen® -ZO, Vitapex® , and ZOE showed similar %FC. Calcicur® showed lower %FC compared with Calen® -ZO, Vitapex® , and ZOE (P < .05) but similar to Feapex. No statistically significant differences in %FC between lentulo or pressure syringe were disclosed. Regarding %IV, Vitapex® , and Calen® -ZO performed better with syringe, although Calcicur® was better with lentulo. The number of voids in the obturation bulk was similar among materials, but always lower (P < .05) in syringe filled specimens. CONCLUSION: Vitapex® , Calen® -ZO, and ZOE outperformed Calcicur® and Feapex in %FC and if the syringe technique is used, %IV of the obturation bulk and presence of defects was lower.

Background: Zinc oxide eugenol(ZOE) has long been the material of choice for obturating primary teeth,but it is resistant to resorption, might result in a deflected successor and has limited antibacterial efficacy. Curcuminpossessesanti-inflammatory and antimicrobialproperties which can be implied by its use as obturating material in primary teeth. Objective: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of Curcumin Gel mixed Endoflas powderand Zinc oxide eugenol as obturating materials in primary molars. Material and methods: A total of 30 primary molars indicated for pulpectomy were selected from 4-9-yearold children and divided into two equal groups based on the obturating material used. Group 1- Curcumin Gel mixed Endoflas powder(CGE) and Group 2- Zinc oxide eugenol(ZOE). The efficacy of these obturation materials was evaluatedboth clinically and radiographically. Follow-up was done after 1, 3 and 6months to evaluate clinical and radiographical success rates. The results were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS software version 21 using chisquare test. Results: At the end of the 6th month follow-up,there was 93.3% clinical success in Group 1 compared with 86.6% success in Group 2. Whereas, radiographically success reported was 100% with Group 1 and 93.3% with Group 2. The difference in the radiographic success rate between the two Groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Based on the present study results, Curcumin Gel mixed Endoflas powder can be considered as an alternative obturation material for treating deciduous molars with extensive involvement of pulp and periradicular tissues.(AU)


Fundamentação: O óxido de zinco eugenol (OZE) há muito tempo é o material de escolha para a obturação de dentes decíduos, mas é resistente à reabsorção, podendo resultar em um dente permanente desviado e tem eficácia antibacteriana limitada. A curcumina possui propriedades anti-inflamatórias e antimicrobianas que podem indicar seu emprego como material obturador em dentes decíduos. Objetivo: Avaliar e comparar a eficácia da pasta de curcumina Endoflas e do óxido de zinco eugenol como materiais obturadores em molares decíduos. Material e métodos: Um total de 30 molares decíduos indicados para pulpectomia foram selecionados entre crianças de 4 a 9 anos e divididos em dois grupos iguais, com base no material obturador utilizado. Grupo 1 - pasta de curcumina Endoflas (CGE) e Grupo 2- óxido de zinco eugenol (ZOE). A eficácia desses materiais de obturação foi avaliada clinicamente e radiograficamente. O acompanhamento foi realizado após 1, 3 e 6 meses para avaliar as taxas de sucesso clínico e radiográfico. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise estatística no software SPSS versão 21, utilizando o teste quiquadrado. Resultados: No final do sexto mês de acompanhamento, houve 93,3% de sucesso clínico no Grupo 1 em comparação com 86,6% de sucesso no Grupo 2. Considerando que, o sucesso radiográfico relatado foi de 100% no Grupo 1 e 93,3% no Grupo 2. A diferença na taxa de sucesso radiográfico entre os dois grupos foi estatisticamente significante (P < 0,05). Conclusão: Com base nos resultados do presente estudo, a pasta de curcumina Endoflas pode ser considerada como um material de obturação alternativo para o tratamento de molares decíduos com amplo envolvimento de polpa e tecidos perirradiculares (AU)

Objetivo: Analisar as propriedades físico-químicas, escoamento, tempo de presa, solubilidade e alteração dimensional, dos cimentos endodônticos à base de óxido de zinco e eugenol: Endomethasone N, Endofill e Grosmann, de acordo com a especificação número 57 da American Dental Association. Métodos: Realizou-se os testes nas condições ambientais de 23° ± 2°C e 50 ± 5% de umidade relativa do ar, mantidas 48 h antes dos procedimentos, repetindo-se cinco vezes e obtendo-se uma média aritmética. Resultados: Os cimentos à base de óxido de zinco e eugenol analisados apresentaram tempo de endurecimento elevados, para o teste de escoamento, o Endofill e Grossman apresentaram-se acima do estabelecido. Em relação à solubilidade, o Endomethasone N esteve dentro do padrão e os demais cimentos excederam. Conclusão:Todos os cimentos analisados obtiveram valores diferentes do recomendado para alteração dimensional. Nenhum dos cimentos enquadrou-se completamente nas normatizações.


Aim: To analyze the physical-chemical properties, flow, setting time, solubility and dimensional change of endodontic cements, based on zinc oxide and eugenol: Endomethasone N, Endo fill, and Grosmann, according to specification number 57 of the American Dental Association. Methods: The tests were conducted under environmental conditions of 23° ± 2°C and 50 ± 5% relative air humidity, maintained for 48 h prior to the procedures, repeating five times and obtaining an arithmetic mean. Results: The cements based on zinc oxide and eugenol analyzed in this study showed high hardening times. For the flow test, Endo fill and Grossman were above the established parameters. Regarding solubility, Endomethasone N was within the standard, while the other cements exceeded this standard. Conclusion: All analyzed cements obtained values that proved to be different from those recommended for dimensional changes. None of the cements were completely compliant with the regulations.
