RESUMEN

The identification of putative prognostic factors in canine mammary neoplasms (CMNs) has been focused on tissue-specific biomarkers, but the serum biomarkers, including cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3), c-reactive protein (CRP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) have been demonstrated to display clinical application in cases of CMNs. The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of these serum biomarkers and their association with well-established prognostic factors in CMNs. Samples from 15 female canines with CMNs and 15 clinically healthy ones were collected. The results were evaluated using the Tukey's, Pearson, or Spearman tests. The cut-off point, sensitivity, specificity, and area under curve (AUC) were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis in a logistic regression model (P<0.05). The levels of CA 15-3, CRP and LDH were significantly higher in the serum of female dogs with CMNs compared to the healthy ones. Moreover, these factors were positively correlated with ulceration, tumor size, histopathological grade, metastatic lymph node, and clinical staging. Female dogs with CMNs were found to exhibit highest serum levels of CA 15-3, CRP, and LDH. Therefore, they can be applied to improve the efficacy of the diagnosis and prognostic evaluation in casas of CMNs.(AU)

RESUMEN

Scorpion envenomation is a life-threatening condition, especially in children and elderly individuals affected by respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. In this study, the toxic effects of median lethal dose (LD50) injections of Mesobuthus eupeus (Me) venom on the heart and lungs of anesthetized rabbits were investigated. Six rabbits were selected and alterations in their electrocardiogram, heart rate, respiration and blood pressure before and after venom injection were recorded. Cardiac troponin T (cTnT), creatinine kinase muscle-brain fraction (CK-MB) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured at 0, 1 and 3 hours after envenomation and pathology studies were carried out postmortem. All the animals showed signs and symptoms of envenomation within 40 minutes and died 3 to 3.5 hours after venom injection. Pathology studies revealed alveolar edema in 100 percent of the rabbits and myocardial infarction in 16 percent. The main histopathological changes were myocytolysis, coagulation necrosis, focal hemorrhage, thrombus formation both in myocardium and on endocardial surfaces as well as inflammatory infiltrates in the heart and hemorrhage, vascular thrombus and interstitial inflammation in the lungs. ECG monitoring of rabbits showed ST elevation, ST depression and inverted T and Q waves. In addition, although cTnT levels increased in 16 percent of the animals and serum LDH was also augmented, none of these changes was statistically significant. The enzyme CK-MB also did not show any change after Me venom injection. In conclusion, the results of this study showed that Me venom killed animals in less than 3.5 hours through severe pulmonary damage and it appears that the deaths could not be attributed to cardiovascular lesions. Therefore, Me venom effects on the lungs are so important that they appear to be independent of heart damage.(AU)

Objetivou-se determinar a atividade sérica das enzimas aspartato aminotransferase (AST), creatina quinase (CK) e lactato desidrogenase (LDH) de cavalos da raça Árabe submetidos a exercício em esteira de alta velocidade. Onze eqüinos adultos da raça Árabe foram condicionados e submetidos ao Teste Padrão de Exercício Progressivo em esteira. Antes, imediatamente após o término do exercício, e nos momentos pós-exercício, 30min, 60min, 3h, 6h, 12h, 24h, 3 dias e 5 dias, foram coletadas amostras de sangue venoso para as determinações séricas das enzimas aspartato aminotransferase (AST), creatina quinase (CK) e lactato desidrogenase (LDH). As concentrações séricas da AST, da CK e da LDH elevam-se imediatamente e retornam a valores semelhantes ao de repouso 30 minutos após o término do Teste Padrão de Exercício Progressivo. A atividade enzimática da aspartato aminotransferase (AST) eleva-se de 12 horas a 24 horas, da creatina quinase (CK) de 3 horas a 6 horas e da lactato desidrogenase (LDH) 24 horas após o término do Teste Padrão de Exercício Progressivo.(AU)


The aim of this study was to determine the serum activities of enzymes aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase in Arabian horses submitted to exercise on high-speed equine treadmill. Eleven mature Arabian horse were training and submitted to Standard Incremental Exercise Test on high-speed equine treadmill. Venous blood samples were taken before exercise, immediately and 30 min, 60min, 3h, 6h, 24h, 3 days and 5 days after exercise. The serum activity aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase were determined. The serum activies of AST, CK and LDH increase immediately and returned to baseline value 30 minutes after exercise. The AST enzyme activity increased at 12 hours and 24 hours, CK at 3 hours and 6 hours, and LDH at 24 hours after Standard Incremental Exercise Test.(AU)

Procedentes de 2 fábricas de ron y 2 de cerveza, se estudiaron 143 consumidores fuertes y habituales de estas bebidas, a quienes se les determinaron las concentraciones de cinc en plasma y 2 enzimas cinc-dependientes: la deshidrogenasa láctica (LDH) y la fosfatasa alcalina (FA); los individuos para su estudio se agruparon según el tipo de consumo y la existencia o no de alteraciones en el perfil hepático. Fue tomado como control un grupo de 81 trabajadores no bebedores o consumidores ocasionales que realizaban actividades laborales semejantes. Se observó que los trabajadores que ingerían de forma habitual elevadas cantidades de alcohol presentaron menores concentraciones de cinc en plasma que el grupo control y que en aquellos bebedores fuertes que presentaban alteraciones en su pérfil hepático, las concentraciones de cinc en plasma resultaron aún menores que en aquéllos con funciones hepáticas normales. Un comportamiento semejante se encontró en la actividad de la enzima LDH, mientras que para la FA sólo se observó una tendencia a la disminución en aquéllos con funciones hepáticas no alteradas. Entre los consumidores de alcohol, los bebedores fuerte de cerveza que mostraron perfiles hepáticos alterados resultaron estar en peor situación nutricional con respecto al cinc, muchos de los cuales mostraron indicadores con valores como deficientes
