RESUMEN

An 8-year-old domestic short-haired cat was presented with anorexia, lethargy, ataxia and one episode of consciousness loss. A midline vertically orientated, biconcave, extra-axial mass originating from the basioccipital bone was detected on magnetic resonance images of the head. The mass was T1W iso- to hypointense when compared with normal grey matter, T2W hyperintense with small areas of isointensity and heterogeneously enhanced with contrast. Multiple signal voids were observed on T2* images. Histopathological evaluation confirmed a chordoma. To the authors' knowledge this is the first report of the imaging characteristics of a chordoma affecting the skull base in a cat.

RESUMEN

This study describes the prevalence and distribution of 42 cases of skull base neoplasia in dogs between 2000 and 2014. The average age of affected individuals was 9.5 years, and there was no sex or breed predisposition. The most common skull base neoplasms were meningioma (25 cases) and pituitary adenoma (9 cases). Less common tumors included craniopharyngioma (2 cases), nerve sheath tumor (2 cases), and 1 case each of pituitary carcinoma, meningeal oligodendrogliomatosis, presumed nasal or sinonasal carcinoma, and multilobular tumor of bone. All neoplasms caused some degree of compression of adjacent structures. The distribution of the tumors was greatest in the sellar region (n = 18), followed by the paranasal region (n = 12), caudal cranial fossa (n = 10), central cranial fossa (n = 1), and rostral cranial fossa (n = 1).

RESUMEN

An 11-year-old female miniature schnauzer was tentatively diagnosed with the skull base meningioma, based on several examinations. Because surgical treatment was difficult, and outpatient radiation therapy was not available in the local area, chemotherapy with hydroxyurea combined with dexamethasone was selected. The patient's clinical symptoms improved after one week of treatment, and the tumor size was obviously reduced on MRI performed 37 days after treatment began. The patient received hydroxyurea for 7 months, with symptoms remaining stable, and the tumor re-increased to almost the same size at 7 months as that at the initial examination. At that time, hydroxyurea was discontinued. The patient died from pulmonary edema 14 months after treatment began. Pathologically, the tumor was diagnosed as a meningioma.

RESUMEN

Suprasellar germinomas were identified in three wild-caught lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) from the St. Lawrence River, Quebec, Canada. Histologically, the three tumors expanded the subarachnoid space of the ventral surface of the brain immediately adjacent to the pituitary gland and, in one case, infiltrated the adjacent neuropil. These tumors were characterized by nests and sheets of round cells with a high mitotic rate, separated by a scant amount of loose fibrovascular stroma. The stroma was infiltrated by a moderate number of small mononuclear cells, including rare CD3-immunoreactive lymphocytes. This is the first report of intracranial germinoma in a fish species.
