Background: Drug therapies have been widely applied for pain management, however, there are important side effects such as those related to corticosteroids and opioids. Recent studies demonstrated promising results using medical ozone as a safe, effective, and low-cost intervention for pain control. Objective: to review and critically analyze clinical studies that used ozone therapy for musculoskeletal pain. Methods: a literature search of various databases was performed to identify relevant studies. From a total of 249 records, 27 studies were included. Quality indicators, human and device factors that strongly influence the generation of evidence were considered, such as study design and device safety. We also mitigated biases, considering the safety and efficacy of the intervention itself. Results: Regarding safety, 77 (8%) of studies reported no adverse effects; concerning efficacy outcomes, medical ozone shows to be an effective intervention on musculoskeletal pain control. Important information about used devices were missing. Conclusions: medical ozone shows to be safe and effective; qualification of health professionals as well as the device safety are mandatory. However, there is a lack of requirements to identify the best therapeutic scheme; further longer, clinical and rigorous trials are needed.

Ambient air pollution is a significant environmental risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth. However, the impact of different pollutants across various regions and trimesters of pregnancy has not been fully investigated in Brazil. This study aimed to examine the associations between exposure to PM2.5, NO2, and O3 during different trimesters of pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth across five regions of Brazil. We used logistic regression models to estimate the odds ratios (OR) of preterm birth associated with PM2.5, NO2, and O3 adjusting for potential confounders such as maternal age, education, and socioeconomic status. Our study included over 9.9 million live births from 2001 to 2018, with data obtained from the Ministry of Health in Brazil. On average, for each 1-µg/m3 increase in PM2.5, we estimated a 0.26â¯% (95â¯% CI: 0.08-0.44â¯%) increase in the risk of preterm birth nationally in the first trimester. For NO2, each 1ppb increase was associated with a percentage increase in preterm birth risk of 7.26â¯% (95â¯% CI: 4.77-9.74â¯%) in the first trimester, 8.05â¯% (95â¯% CI: 5.73-10.38â¯%) in the second trimester, and 7.48â¯% (95â¯% CI: 5.25-9.72â¯%) in the third trimester. For O3, each 1ppb increase was associated with a percentage increase in preterm birth risk of 1.24â¯% (95â¯% CI: 0.29-2.18â¯%) in the first trimester, 1.51â¯% (95â¯% CI: 0.60-2.41â¯%) in the second trimester, and 0.72â¯% (95â¯% CI: -0.18-1.62â¯%) in the third trimester. This study highlights the significant impact of ambient air pollution on preterm birth risk in Brazil, with significant regional variations. Our findings underscore the need for targeted public health interventions to mitigate the effects of air pollution on pregnancy outcomes, particularly in the most affected regions.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of ozone therapy applied topically and/or by bagging on the healing of clean wounds induced in rat's skin. METHODS: One hundred and twenty male rats of about 16 weeks old was divided into five groups: G1) saline solution (0.9%); G2) sunflower oil; G3) ozonated sunflower oil; G4) ozone bagging; G5) association of ozonated sunflower oil and ozone bagging. The wounds were evaluated through macroscopic, morphometric, histopathologic, and tensile strength analyses. RESULTS: Analysis among groups showed a lower percentage of wound contraction in G1 compared to G4 only in M7D. The tensile strength of the wounds showed differences among groups in the seventh (M7D) and the 14th (M14D) postoperative day, and among time points in G1 (M14D > M7D). The elongation of the wounds showed differences in G3 (M7D > M14D). Histological evaluation of the wounds showed significant change in bleeding, mixed to mononuclear infiltrate, congestion, and tissue disorganization for tissue organization between groups and time points. CONCLUSIONS: Ozone therapy applied topically and/or by bagging was not deleterious to the healing of clean wounds induced in rat's skin, but ozone bagging showed the best contribution to the healing process.

Low birth weight (LBW) is a global health concern. While it is commonly associated with maternal health and behavior, exposure to ambient air pollution, can also play a role in contributing to LBW. In Brazil, where diverse environmental conditions and regional disparities exist, assessing the impact of ambient air pollution on LBW becomes particularly pertinent. To our knowledge, there is a gap in the existing literature, as no previous study has specifically investigated the relationship between ambient air pollution and LBW nationwide in Brazil. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the association between ambient air pollution and LBW in each trimester of pregnancy across the Brazilian states. In this work, birth data from January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2018 has been used. We utilized logistic regression models to estimate the odds ratio (OR) for low birth weight (LBW) associated with ambient air pollution (PM2.5, NO2, and O3) during each trimester of pregnancy (1st to 3rd trimester) across all 27 Brazilian states in our nationwide case-control study. We adjusted our model for several variables, including ambient temperature, relative humidity, and socioeconomic status (SES) variables at the individual level. We also conducted effect modification analyses by infant sex, mother's age, and the number of prenatal visits. Our study comprises over 10,213,144 birth records nationwide. Of these, 479,204 (4.92%) infants were included as cases of LBW. Our results indicate positive associations between PM2.5 and LBW, mainly in the Southern region. For example, in the state of Santa Catarina (South region), ORs were 1.003 (95% CI: 1.002, 1.004), 1.003 (95% CI: 1.002, 1.004), and 1.005 (95% CI: 1.003, 1.007) for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters of exposure, respectively. NO2 had a robust association with LBW in the Northern and Northeastern states, including the state of Amapá (North region, where the Amazon Forest is located) with ORs of 1.377 (95% CI: 1.010, 1.878), 1.390 (95% CI: 1.020, 1.894), and 1.747 (95% CI: 1.297, 2.352) for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters of exposure, respectively. Similarly, O3 had a robust association in the North and Midwest states, as observed in the state of Amapá with ORs of 1.033 (95% CI: 1.012, 1.054), and 1.033 (95% CI: 1.013, 1.053) for the 2nd, and 3rd trimesters, respectively. In the stratified analysis, boys were more vulnerable than girls, and the lower number of prenatal visits was associated with higher OR. Our findings are essential to the development of guidelines to prevent maternal exposure and protection of newborns in Brazil. This study provides valuable insights for region-specific strategies to improve maternal and neonatal health.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of death worldwide, with oxidative stress and calcium overload playing significant roles in the pathophysiology of the disease. Ozone, renowned for its potent antioxidant properties, is commonly employed as an adjuvant therapy in clinical settings. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether ozone therapy on parthanatos in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI). This study aims to investigate the impact of ozone therapy on reducing parthanatos during CIRI and to elucidate the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was utilized to mimic the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in SH-SY5Y cell reperfusion injury in vitro, and an in vivo ischemic stroke model was established. Ozone saline was introduced for co-culture or intravenously administered to mice. Apoptosis and oxidative stress were assessed using flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. Western blotting was utilized to examine the expression of parthanatos signature proteins. The mechanism by which ozone inhibits parthanatos was elucidated through inhibiting PPARg or Nrf2 activity. RESULTS: The findings demonstrated that ozone mitigated H2O2-induced parthanatos by either upregulating nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) or activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptorg (PPARg). Furthermore, through the use of calcium chelators and ROS inhibitors, it was discovered that ROS directly induced parthanatos and facilitated intracellular calcium elevation. Notably, a malignant feedback loop between ROS and calcium was identified, further amplifying the induction of parthanatos. Ozone therapy exhibited its efficacy by increasing PPARg activity or enhancing the Nrf2 translation, thereby inhibiting ROS production induced by H2O2. Concurrently, our study demonstrated that ozone treatment markedly inhibited parthanatos in stroke-afflicted mice. Additionally, ozone therapy demonstrated significant neuroprotective effects on cortical neurons, effectively suppressing parthanatos. CONCLUSIONS: These findings contribute valuable insights into the potential of ozone therapy as a therapeutic strategy for reducing parthanatos during CIRI, highlighting its impact on key molecular pathways associated with oxidative stress and calcium regulation.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of ozone therapy in guided bone regeneration (GBR) for critical size calvarial defects in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 96 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 6 each). An 8 mm critical defect was created in the calvaria of each rat. The groups were: BIO (porcine collagen membrane, BioGide®), BIO + OZ (membrane with systemic ozone therapy every 2 days), COA + OZ (blood clot with ozone therapy), and COA (blood clot only). Evaluations at 7, 15, 30, and 60 days included histological, histomorphometric, inflammatory profile, Micro-CT, and immunohistochemical analyses. Statistical analysis involved two-factor ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test for general data, and one-factor ANOVA with Holm-Sidak post-hoc test for Micro-CT data. RESULTS: The BIO + OZ group demonstrated superior bone regeneration with well-organized, mature bone tissue and significant bone formation at 30 and 60 days. The COA + OZ group showed early angiogenesis and reduced inflammation, resulting in complete defect closure by 30 days. The BIO group had good regeneration, but less mature tissue compared to BIO + OZ. The COA group exhibited limited bone formation and higher porosity. CONCLUSION: Ozone therapy positively influences bone regeneration by enhancing cell proliferation and the healing response. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Improving regenerative processes with auxiliary therapies like ozone therapy can be significant for advancing dental reconstructions.

This study aimed to evaluate the localised effects of intrauterine ozone therapy on endometrial recovery in mares with endometritis. Our investigation assessed changes in gene expression profiles of anti-inflammatory (IL-1RA and IL-10), proinflammatory (IL-R1B3i and TNFα) and pleiotropic (IL-6) cytokines, along with detailed histological measurements of epithelial and endometrial thickness and the glandular area ratio. Twenty mares were assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial design based on endometritis diagnosis and treatment (control or 42 µg/mL ozone insufflation), resulting in four groups: NC (negative for endometritis/control), NO (negative/ozone), PC (positive/control) and PO (positive/ozone). Oestrus was induced with 2 mg of oestradiol benzoate on Days -1, 1 and 3, plus 1 mg on Day 5. Day 0 marked the initial uterine treatment, followed by insufflations on Days 1 and 2 with O3 (ozone) or O2 (control). Uterine biopsies were taken before treatment on Day 0 and Day 6 for histological analysis and gene expression assessment. Data were analysed using a statistical model that included endometritis status, treatment type, biopsy times (D0 and D6) and their interactions, analysed with Proc Glimmix. Regardless of treatment or endometritis status, significant biopsy effects (p < 0.01) indicated increased epithelial height and endometrial thickness in Day 6 samples. Analysis of IL-1 and TNFα revealed a significant interaction (p < 0.05) among endometritis, treatment and biopsy, with higher IL-1B3i expression on Day 6 in the PC group. The treatment effect (p < 0.04) showed a higher frequency (p < 0.01) of animals with positive modulation in the PC group (66.7%) versus the PO group (0.0%). An interaction effect (p = 0.08) between endometritis and treatment resulted from higher IL-1RA expression on Day 6 in the PC group compared to the PO group. Biopsy effect was significant for IL-10 (p < 0.01), indicating higher values in the second sample associated with tissue repair. In the short-term evaluation, ozone therapy did not influence endometrial morphology and may modulate cytokine expression, specifically the reduction in IL-1 and TNFα levels. Therefore, this therapy appears to be a safe and potentially effective treatment for modulating the inflammatory response in mares with endometritis.

Reclaimed water poses environmental and human health risks due to residual organic micropollutants and pathogens. Ozonation of reclaimed water to control pathogens and trace organics is an important step in advanced water treatment systems for potable reuse of reclaimed water. Ensuring efficient pathogen reduction while controlling disinfection byproducts remains a significant challenge to implementing ozonation in reclaimed water reuse applications. This study aimed to investigate ozonation conditions using a plug flow reactor (PFR) to achieve effective pathogen removal/inactivation while minimizing bromate and N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation. The pilot scale study was conducted using three doses of ozone (0.7, 1.0 and 1.4 ozone/total organic carbon (O3/TOC) ratio) to determine the disinfection performance using actual reclaimed water. The disinfection efficiency was assessed by measuring total coliforms, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Pepper Mild Mottle Virus (PMMoV), Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV) and Norovirus (HNoV). The ozone CT values ranged from 1.60 to 13.62 mg min L-1, resulting in significant reductions in pathogens and indicators. Specifically, ozone treatment led to concentration reductions of 2.46-2.89, 2.03-2.18, 0.46-1.63, 2.23-2.64 and > 4 log for total coliforms, E. coli, PMMoV, ToBRFV, and HNoV, respectively. After ozonation, concentrations of bromate and NDMA increased, reaching levels between 2.8 and 12.0 µg L-1, and 28-40.0 ng L-1, respectively, for average feed water bromide levels of 86.7 ± 1.8 µg L-1 and TOC levels of 7.2 ± 0.1 mg L-1. The increases in DBP formation were pronounced with higher ozone dosages, possibly requiring removal/control in subsequent treatment steps in some potable reuse applications.

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of ozone therapy in oral ulcers healing when compared to placebo or active treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The search was carried out using PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Lilacs databases. Clinical trials involving human participants were included. The Risk Ratio (RR) and the standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95%CI (confidence interval) were calculated. The ROBINS-I (risk of bias in non-randomized studies of interventions) and RoB2 (risk of bias tool for randomized trials) assessment tool was used to detect bias. RESULTS: After the selection process, 12 studies were included. The meta-analysis showed that ozone therapy helps to reduce the size of the traumatic and autoimmune ulcers (RR=-0.44; 95% CI -0.71,-0.17; I2=0%) in comparison to placebo. Regarding pain reduction, ozone was superior to placebo (RR = 1.29, 95% CI -1.6 to -0.95); I2=0%), and equivalent to topical corticosteroid and laser photobiomodulation (RR = 0.26, 95% CI -0.27,0.78, p = 0.34). CONCLUSION: Ozone therapy is an alternative for accelerating healing and reducing pain for both traumatic and autoimmune ulcers. However, the quality of evidence is limited. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Oral ulcerations are usually painful and impact quality of life requiring different approaches to boost wound healing and reduce symptoms. For this purpose, ozone therapy is a promising strategy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of environmental factors and prematurity relating to juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), its course and refractoriness to treatment. METHODS: A case-control study with 35 patients followed up at a tertiary hospital and 124 healthy controls, all residents of São Paulo. Patients were classified according to monocyclic, polycyclic or chronic disease courses and refractoriness to treatment. The daily concentrations of pollutants (inhalable particulate matter-PM10, sulfur dioxide-SO2, nitrogen dioxide-NO2, ozone-O3 and carbon monoxide-CO) were provided by the Environmental Company of São Paulo. Data from the population were obtained through a questionnaire. RESULTS: Fifteen patients had monocyclic courses, and 19 polycyclic/chronic courses. Eighteen patients were refractory to treatment. Maternal occupational exposure to inhalable agents (OR = 17.88; IC 95% 2.15-148.16, p = 0.01) and exposure to O3 in the fifth year of life (third tertile > 86.28µg/m3; OR = 6.53, IC95% 1.60-26.77, p = 0.01) were risk factors for JDM in the multivariate logistic regression model. The presence of a factory/quarry at a distance farther than 200 meters from daycare/school (OR = 0.22; IC 95% 0.06-0.77; p = 0.02) was a protective factor in the same analysis. Prematurity, exposure to air pollutants/cigarette smoke/sources of inhalable pollutants in the mother's places of residence and work during the gestational period were not associated with JDM. Prematurity, maternal exposure to occupational pollutants during pregnancy as well as patient's exposure to ground-level pollutants up to the fifth year of life were not associated with disease course and treatment refractoriness. CONCLUSION: Risk factors for JDM were maternal occupational exposure and exposure to O3 in the fifth year of life.

As it flows through the city of São Paulo, the Tietê River receives heavy discharges of industrial effluents and domestic sewage, resulting from the city's continuous urban expansion and the inadequacy of its sanitary sewage system. This study focused on an analysis of the efficiency of PGα21Ca and quaternary ammonium tannate, water purification products, based on coagulation-flocculation and sedimentation tests, followed by treatment with a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor associated with ozonation in the treatment of Tietê River water. The removal of turbidity, apparent color, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were evaluated. Jar testing assays were conducted, and the best turbidity removal rates were obtained with a concentration of 300 mg L-1 for PGα21Ca and 150 mg L-1 for quaternary ammonium tannate. The coagulation-flocculation treatment removed approximately 93% of turbidity for both coagulants. After combining coagulation-flocculation with hydrodynamic cavitation with ozonation, the final COD removal rate applying PGα21Ca was 47.63% in 1 hour of reaction, while that of quaternary ammonium tannate was 40.13% in 2 hours of reaction. Although the results appear to indicate the superior performance of PGα21Ca, it should be noted that the treatment with quaternary ammonium tannate also provided good results in reducing turbidity, COD, and apparent color, using a smaller dose of this coagulant and that its use may be more advantageous from an environmental point of view, due to its natural composition.

Water pollution in developing countries continues to be a major health problem due to various anthropological activities that contribute to the spread of many parasitic diseases, including those caused by helminths. The aim of this study is to explore the ability of ozone and peroxone to disinfect drinking water contaminated samples with Toxocara canis eggs. The oxidants used were ozone and ozone-hydrogen peroxide combination. The treatment of Toxocara canis eggs was carried out in a 50 ml reactor with an operating volume of 10 ml. The pH conditions (5, 7 and 10) were varied for each treatment. The treatment effect was calculated by counting eggs and examining the condition of the larvae larval condition (whole, broken and hatched larvae) using an optical microscope. The experiment was carried out by exposing the eggs for 60 and 120 minutes to ozone and peroxone. The best results were obtained for helminths treated with the ozone/hydrogen peroxide combination at pH 10, with an inactivation of 79.2%. The synergistic effect of ozone combined with hydrogen peroxide allows higher helminth egg inactivation rates, demonstrating that advanced oxidation processes are a real alternative to apply in the inactivation of Toxocara canis eggs. The results obtained in this study show that the ozone and peroxone treatment could be a useful disinfection process to destroy or inactivate Toxocara canis eggs in processes commonly applied in water treatment.

Morbidity and mortality from several diseases are increased on days of higher ambient air pollution. We carried out a daily time-series analysis with distributive lags to study the influence of short-term air pollution exposure on COVID-19 related hospitalization in Santiago, Chile between March 16 and August 31, 2020. Analyses were adjusted for temporal trends, ambient temperature, and relative humidity, and stratified by age and sex. 26,579 COVID-19 hospitalizations were recorded of which 24,501 were laboratory confirmed. The cumulative percent change in hospitalizations (95% confidence intervals) for an interquartile range increase in air pollutants were: 1.1 (0.2, 2.0) for carbon monoxide (CO), 0.30 (0.0, 0.50) for nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and 2.7 (1.9, 3.0) for particulate matter of diameter ≤ 2.5 microns (PM2.5). Associations with ozone (O3), particulate matter of diameter ≤ 10 microns (PM10) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were not significant. The observed effect of PM2.5 was significantly greater for females and for those individuals ≥ 65 years old. This study provides evidence that daily increases in air pollution, especially PM2.5, result in a higher observed risk of hospitalization from COVID-19. Females and the elderly may be disproportionately affected.

Objetivo: Avaliar as principais evidências científicas acerca da eficácia da ozonioterapia em feridas diabéticas. Métodos: Foi utilizado o modelo de revisão integrativa da literatura. A coleta de dados aconteceu no mês de maio de 2021, obtendo as bases de dados: Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (Medline) e Índice Bibliográfico Español en Ciencias de la Salud (IBECS), ambos acessados pela Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), onde foram selecionados nove artigos após o processo de filtragens, critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Resultados: A ozonioterapia apresenta propriedades analgésicas, antiinflamatórias, ação fungicida, bactericida e cicatrizante. Ressalta-se, ainda, os efeitos benéficos com uso do ôzonio e suas ferramentas terapéuticas eficientes para reversão do quadro agudo e/ou crônico das lesões de pele. Conclusão: Espera-se que esta pesquisa possa contribuir para uma reflexão sobre o uso da ozonioterapia em diabéticos, pois esta técnica constatou ser segura e eficaz. (AU)
Objective: To evaluate the main scientific evidence about the effectiveness of ozone therapy in diabetic wounds. Methods: The integrative literature review model was used. Data collection took place in May 2021, obtaining the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (Medline) and Bibliographic Index Español en Ciencias de la Salud (IBECS), both accessed by the Virtual Health Library (VHL), where nine articles were selected after the filtering process, inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Ozone therapy has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, fungicidal, bactericidal and healing properties. The beneficial effects of using ozone and its efficient therapeutic tools for reversing the acute and/or chronic condition of skin lesions should also be highlighted. Conclusions: It is hoped that this research can contribute to a reflection on the use of ozone therapy in diabetics, as this technique was found to be safe and effective. (AU)

OBJECTIVE: Studies have highlighted numerous benefits of ozone therapy in the field of medicine and dentistry, including its antimicrobial efficacy against various pathogenic microorganisms, its ability to modulate the immune system effectively, reduce inflammation, prevent hypoxia, and support tissue regeneration. However, its effects on dental extraction healing remain to be elucidated. .Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of systemically administered ozone (O3) at different doses in the healing of dental extraction sockets in rats. METHODOLOGY: To this end, 72 Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups after extraction of the right upper central incisor: Group C - control, no systemic treatment; Group OZ0.3 - animals received a single dose of 0.3 mg/kg O3; Group OZ0.7 - a single dose of 0.7 mg/kg O3; and Group OZ1.0 - a single dose of 1.0 mg/kg O3, intraperitoneally. In total, six animals from each group were euthanized at 7, 14, and 21 days after the commencement of treatment. Bone samples were harvested and further analyzed by descriptive histology, histomorphometry, and immunohistochemistry for osteocalcin (OCN) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) protein expression. RESULTS: All applied doses of O3 were shown to increase the percentage of bone tissue (PBT) after 21 days compared to group C. After 14 days, the OZ0.7 and OZ1.0 groups showed significantly higher PBT when compared to group C. The OZ1.0 group presented the most beneficial results regarding PBT among groups, which denotes a dose-dependent response. OCN immunostaining was higher in all groups at 21 days. However, after seven and 14 days, the OZ1.0 group showed a significant increase in OCN immunostaining compared to C group. No differences in TRAP+ osteoclasts were found between groups and time points. CONCLUSION: Therefore, O3 therapy at higher doses might be beneficial for bone repair of the alveolar socket following tooth extraction.

The traditional aviary decontamination process involves farmers applying pesticides to the aviary's ground. These agricultural defenses are easily dispersed in the air, making the farmers susceptible to chronic diseases related to recurrent exposure. Industry 5.0 raises new pillars of research and innovation in transitioning to more sustainable, human-centric, and resilient companies. Based on these concepts, this paper presents a new aviary decontamination process that uses IoT and a robotic platform coupled with ozonizer (O3) and ultraviolet light (UVL). These clean technologies can successfully decontaminate poultry farms against pathogenic microorganisms, insects, and mites. Also, they can degrade toxic compounds used to control living organisms. This new decontamination process uses physicochemical information from the poultry litter through sensors installed in the environment, which allows accurate and safe disinfection. Different experimental tests were conducted to construct the system. First, tests related to measuring soil moisture, temperature, and pH were carried out, establishing the range of use and the confidence interval of the measurements. The robot's navigation uses a back-and-forth motion that parallels the aviary's longest side because it reduces the number of turns, reducing energy consumption. This task becomes more accessible because of the aviaries' standardized geometry. Furthermore, the prototype was tested in a real aviary to confirm the innovation, safety, and effectiveness of the proposal. Tests have shown that the UV + ozone combination is sufficient to disinfect this environment.

In this study, neural networks and support vector regression (SVR) were employed to predict the degradation over three pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs): Ibuprofen (IBP), diclofenac (DCF), and caffeine (CAF) within a stirred reactor featuring a flotation cell with two non-concentric ultraviolet lamps. A total of 438 datapoints were collected from published works and distributed into 70% training and 30% test datasets while cross-validation was utilized to assess the training reliability. The models incorporated 15 input variables concerning reaction kinetics, molecular properties, hydrodynamic information, presence of radiation, and catalytic properties. It was observed that the Support Vector Regression (SVR) presented a poor performance as the ε hyperparameter ignored large error over low concentration levels. Meanwhile, the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) model was able to provide rough estimations on the expected degradation of the pollutants without requiring information regarding reaction rate constants. The multi-objective optimization analysis suggested a leading role due to ozone kinetic for a rapid degradation of the contaminants and most of the results required intensification with hydrogen peroxide and Fenton process. Although both models were affected by accuracy limitations, this work provided a lightweight model to evaluate different Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) by providing general information regarding the process operational conditions as well as know molecular and catalytic properties.

Air pollution caused by tropospheric ozone contributes to the decline of forest ecosystems; for instance, sacred fir, Abies religiosa (Kunth) Schltdl. & Cham. forests in the peri-urban region of Mexico City. Individual trees within these forests exhibit variation in their response to ozone exposure, including the severity of visible symptoms in needles. Using RNA-Seq metatranscriptomic data and ITS2 metabarcoding, we investigated whether symptom variation correlates with the taxonomic and functional composition of fungal mycobiomes from needles collected in this highly polluted area in the surroundings of Mexico City. Our findings indicate that ozone-related symptoms do not significantly correlate with changes in the taxonomic composition of fungal mycobiomes. However, genes coding for 30 putative proteins were differentially expressed in the mycobiome of asymptomatic needles, including eight genes previously associated with resistance to oxidative stress. These results suggest that fungal communities likely play a role in mitigating the oxidative burst caused by tropospheric ozone in sacred fir. Our study illustrates the feasibility of using RNA-Seq data, accessible from global sequence repositories, for the characterization of fungal communities associated with plant tissues, including their gene expression.

Pleurotus ostreatus is one of the most widely cultivated species in the world. It can be produced in many lignocellulosic substrates after carrying out a treatment to eliminate competing microorganisms. The most commonly used is pasteurization by steam or by immersion in hot water. The aim of this work is to evaluate if ozone can be employed as treatment for decontamination of the substrate used for the production of the edible mushroom P. ostreatus to control of green mold Trichoderma. Wheat straw was employed as a substrate. We used two different methodologies: bubbling ozone into a tank with water and the substrate, and injecting ozone into a closed tank with the substrate inside. Ten treatments were carried out including two treatments with inoculation by a spray of conidia of Trichoderma. The effect of ozone on the conidia was also evaluated. We found that the treatment of the substrate with ozone in immersed water resulted more effective (lower growth of Trichoderma) than injecting ozone into a closed tank. Anyway, we found that the contaminant fungi could grow on the substrate in both treatments with ozone. We observed that although ozone affected the conidia when it was bubbled into water, some of them still managed to survive and could germinate 72 h later. P. ostreatus could grow and produce fruiting bodies on a substrate that was previously treated with ozone and yields were not affected. Based on the results obtained, we conclude that ozone may not be an effective agent to control Trichoderma in highly contaminated substrates, at least in the experimental conditions that we used, for the production of P. ostreatus.

This study evaluated the health-related weighted ultraviolet radiation (UVR) due to the total ozone content (TOC) and the aerosol optical depth (AOD) changes. Clear-sky Ultraviolet Index (UVI), daily doses, and exposure times for erythema induction (Dery and Tery) and vitamin D synthesis (DvitD and TvitD) were computed by a radiative transfer estimator. TOC and AOD data were provided by six Earth System Models (ESMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). For projections, we consider four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways scenarios-SSPs (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5)-and two time-slices (near: 2041-2060 and far future: 2081-2100). UVR projections showed pronounced changes for the summer hemispheres in the far future. TOC increases in mid- and high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere caused decreases in UVR at the summer solstice. However, projections did not indicate sun-safe exposure conditions in South America, Australia, and Southern Africa. On the contrary, exposure around solar noon from 10 to 20 min will still be sufficient to induce erythema in skin type III individuals throughout this century. In southern Argentina and Chile, the UVR insufficiency for vitamin D synthesis at solar noon in skin type III remains the same during this century at the winter solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere, UVI and Dery at the summer solstice should remain high (UVI ≥ 8; Dery ~ 7.0 kJ m-2) in highly populated locations. Above 45 °N, UVR levels cannot be enough to synthesize vitamin D in skin type III during the boreal winter. Our results show that climate change will affect human health through excess or lack of solar UVR availability.
