RESUMEN

The development of thickening powders for the management of dysphagia is imperative due to the rapid growth of aging population and prevalence of the dysphagia. One promising thickening agent that can be used to formulate dysphagia diets is basil seed mucilage (BSM). This work investigates the effects of dispersing media, including water, milk, skim milk, and apple juice, on the rheological and tribological properties of the BSM-thickened liquids. Shear rheology results revealed that the thickening ability of BSM in these media in ascending order is milk < skim milk ≈ apple juice < water. On the other hand, extensional rheology demonstrated that the longest filament breakup time was observed when BSM was dissolved in milk, followed by skim milk, water, and apple juice. Furthermore, tribological measurements showed varying lubrication behavior, depending on the BSM concentration and dispersing media. Dissolution of BSM in apple juice resulted in the most superior lubrication property compared with that in other dispersing media. Overall, this study provides insights on BSM's application as a novel gum-based thickening powder in a range of beverages and emphasizes how important it is for consumers to have clear guidance for the use of BSM in dysphagia management.

Silkworm (Bombyx mori) larvae are expected to be useful as an ingredient in entomophagy. They are full of nutrients, including indigestible proteins; however, there have been few studies on the effects of the consumption of the entire body of silkworms on the intestinal microflora. We prepared a customized diet containing silkworm larval powder (SLP), and investigated the effects of ad libitum feeding of the SLP diet on the intestinal microbiota and the amount of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in mice. We found that the diversity of the cecal and fecal microbiota increased in the mice fed the SLP diet (SLP group), and that the composition of their intestinal microbiota differed from that of the control mice. Furthermore, a genus-level microbiota analysis showed that in the SLP group, the proportions of Alistipes, Lachnospiraceae A2, and RF39, which are associated with the prevention of obesity, were significantly increased, while the proportions of Helicobacter and Anaerotruncus, which are associated with obesity, were significantly decreased. Additionally, the level of butyrate was increased in the SLP group, and Clostridia UCG 014 and Lachnospiraceae FCS020 were found to be associated with the level of butyrate, one of the major SCFAs. These findings indicated that silkworm powder may be useful as an insect food that might also improve obesity.

Berberine is used in the treatment of metabolic syndrome and its low solubility and very poor oral bioavailability of berberine was one of the primary hurdles for its market approval. This study aimed to improve the solubility and bioavailability of berberine by preparing pellet formulations containing drug-excipient complex (obtained by solid dispersion). Berberine-excipient solid dispersion complexes were obtained with different ratios by the solvent evaporation method. The maximum saturation solubility test was performed as a key factor for choosing the optimal complex for the drug-excipient. The properties of these complexes were investigated by FTIR, DSC, XRD and dissolution tests. The obtained pellets were evaluated and compared in terms of pelletization efficiency, particle size, mechanical strength, sphericity and drug release profile in simulated media of gastric and intestine. Solid-state analysis showed complex formation between the drug and excipients used in solid dispersion. The optimal berberine-phospholipid complex showed a 2-fold increase and the optimal berberine-gelucire and berberine-citric acid complexes showed more than a 3-fold increase in the solubility of berberine compared to pure berberine powder. The evaluation of pellets from each of the optimal complexes showed that the rate and amount of drug released from all pellet formulations in the simulated gastric medium were significantly lower than in the intestine medium. The results of this study showed that the use of berberine-citric acid or berberine-gelucire complex could be considered a promising technique to increase the saturation solubility and improve the release characteristics of berberine from the pellet formulation.

BACKGROUND: Ancient classic prescription play a crucial role in the preservation and advancement of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theories. They represent a significant milestone in the ongoing development and transmission of TCM knowledge and practices and are considered one of the breakthroughs in the development of TCM inheritance. In the process of developing ancient classic prescriptions, many problems may still arise in ensuring quality consistency between traditional methods and modern production processes, among which the extraction process poses major challenges. This paper introduces a practical approach extracting an ancient classic prescription using a modern extraction process. The technique is demonstrated through the study of the extraction process of Shenshou Taiyi powder (STP). METHODS: This study focuses on optimising the STP extraction process to ensure consistency in the quality of the product obtained through ancient and modern processes using the standard relation and fuzzy analytic hierarchical process (FAHP) and criteria importance through intercriteria correlation (CRITIC) method integrated weights combined with the Box-Behnken response surface test. Using the contents of rosmarinic acid, isoimperatorin, puerarin, as well as the extract yield and fingerprint similarity as evaluation indexes of STP, the Box-Behnken response surface method was employed to examine the varying extraction parameters, including water addition ratio, extraction duration, and number of extractions. The weighted coefficients for each parameter were calculated by combining the benchmark correlation and FAHP-CRITIC method, deriving a comprehensive score. RESULTS: The optimal extraction process for STP consisted of a two extractions, each using at a tenfold quantity of water, performed for one hour. Process verification across three separate batches yielded a comprehensive score of 94.7, with a relative standard deviation of 0.76%. CONCLUSIONS: The application of the Box-Behnken response surface method combined with standard relation and FAHP-CRITIC approach proved to be stable and feasible for optimising the extraction process of STP.

Ternary alkali-activated binder was prepared by blast furnace slag (GGBS), recycled powder (RP) and waste glass powder (WGP) using simplex centroid design method. By measuring the fluidity, setting time, drying shrinkage and mechanical property of specimen, the complementary effect of GGBS, RP and WGP was discussed. The reaction mechanism and microstructure were explored by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results reveal that the addition of RP could significantly reduce the fluidity and setting time of paste, while WGP can obviously improve the rheological property and play a retarding role. The workability of paste can be effectively regulated by mixing RP and WGP together. Whether added alone or in combination, RP and WGP can effectively improve the shrinkage performance. In the ternary system, GGBS can be rapidly activated and form a skeleton structure. The fine RP particles can play a good role in filling the structure, and the pozzolanic reaction of WGP gradually occurs, which makes the microstructure more compact. The incorporation of GGBS, RP and WGP can promote the growth of hydration products, improve the density of microstructure, and form a certain complementary effect.

This study investigates the potential of using Ficus religiosa inflorescence (peepal tree) as an efficient solution for removing crystal violet from simulated and industrial wastewater. Various analyses were conducted to understand the adsorbent's structure, including particle morphology, BET surface area, FTIR, and pHZPC. The adsorption process was studied under different physicochemical factors such as temperature, concentration, contact time, and pH. Results revealed rapid adsorption, with 94.15% removal efficiency within the first 15 min at neutral pH. The highest observed adsorption capacity was 198.03 mg g-1, following pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.99), indicating chemisorption. The Langmuir model accurately described the adsorption pathway (R2 = 0.99), showing monolayer adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis indicated an exothermic, feasible, and spontaneous process with increased entropy. The adsorbent could be easily regenerated using a 1:1 MeOH/H2O mixture for up to three cycles, yielding up to 73.86%. Real-time application with industrial effluent containing crystal violet showed up to 44.70% adsorption. The experiments demonstrated reliability with evaluated standard deviations (0.017935-0.000577) and relative standard deviations (0.439-0.673%), confirming statistical reliability. In conclusion, it presents a sustainable and eco-friendly approach for removing crystal violet dye from diverse wastewater sources.

AIMS: This study aims to evaluate the storage stability of the freeze-dried recombinant Lactococcus lactis NZ3900-fermented milk powder expressing K-ras (Kristen rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog) mimotopes targeting colorectal cancer in vacuum packaging. METHODS AND RESULTS: The freeze-dried L. lactis-fermented milk powder stored in 4-ply retortable polypropylene (RCPP)-polyamide (PA)-aluminium (AL)-polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and aluminium polyethylene (ALPE) was evaluated throughout 49 days of accelerated storage (38°C and 90% relative humidity). The fermented milk powder stored in 4-ply packaging remained above 6 log10 CFU g-1 viability, displayed lower moisture content (6.1%), higher flowability (43° angle of repose), water solubility (62%), and survivability of L. lactis after simulated gastric and intestinal digestion (>82%) than ALPE packaging after 42 days of accelerated storage. K-ras mimotope expression was detected intracellularly and extracellularly in the freeze-dried L. lactis-fermented milk powder upon storage. CONCLUSIONS: This suggests that fermented milk powder is a suitable food carrier for this live oral vaccine.

This study evaluated the effect of ultrasonic agitation on the filling capacity of ready-to-use calcium silicate-based sealer Bio-C Sealer (BCS, Angelus, Paraná, Brazil) or powder-liquid BioRoot RCS (BR, Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France) using curved artificial canals by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Additionally, flow (mm) and flow area (mm2) were evaluated for both materials. Acrylic resin main canal (60° curvature and 5 mm radius, with 3 lateral canals in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds) were prepared up to size 40/.05 (Prodesign Logic, Brazil). The agitation method was used with ultrasonic tip (US, Irrisonic, Helse, Brazil): BCS, BCS/US, BR, and BR/US. All specimens were filled using the single-cone technique. The samples were scanned by micro-CT (8,74 µm) after obturation. The percentage of filling material and voids were calculated. Flow was evaluated based on ISO 6876/2012 standards (mm) and area (mm2). The data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). BR/US showed lower percentage of filling material in the lateral canals than and, BCS/US (p<0.05). BR/US resulted in a higher percentage of voids than BR in the lateral apical third (p<0.05). BCS showed higher flow than BR (p<0.05). BCS and BR presented proper filling capacity in the simulated curved canals regardless of the use of ultrasonic agitation. However, BR/US showed more voids in the apical third. BCS demonstrates higher filling ability.

Based on the insulin receptor substrate(IRS)/phosphoinositide 3-kinase(PI3K)/protein kinase B(Akt) pathway, the intervention effect of Yupingfeng Powder on type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) rats was studied, and the potential mechanism of improving T2DM hepatic insulin resistance was explored. A T2DM rat model was established by feeding with high-fat and high-sugar feed combined with intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. Successfully modeled rats were selected and divided into a model group, a positive control group(MET), and a Yupingfeng Powder group. At the same time, a blank group was set up, and corresponding drugs were given by gavage. The model group and blank group were given an equal amount of physiological saline by gavage. During the experiment, body mass and fasting blood glucose were regularly measured, and glucose tolerance and insulin tolerance were measured at the end of the experiment. After the experiment, the levels of blood glucose, insulin, blood lipids, and related liver function indicators were measured; changes in liver pathological damage were observed, levels of liver monoamine oxidase were detected, and qRT-PCR was used to detect mRNA expression levels of IRS/PI3K/Akt pathway related genes. Compared with the model group, the Yupingfeng Powder group had an increase in body weight, a decrease in fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, and steady-state model evaluation index, a decrease in the area under the curve of glucose tolerance and insulin tolerance tests, a decrease in serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol content, and an increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol content. Compared with the model group, the Yupingfeng Powder group showed a decrease in liver monoamine oxidase levels, a decrease in serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and total bilirubin levels, and an increase in total protein and albumin levels. Hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining showed a reduction in pathological liver cell damage. Compared with the model group, the Yupingfeng Powder group showed a significant increase in the mRNA expression levels of IRS1, PI3K, and Akt in the liver of rats, as well as a significant decrease in the mRNA expression levels of interleukin-6(IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α). This indicates that Yupingfeng Powder can regulate the IRS/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and glucose and lipid metabolism disorders, increase insulin sensitivity, improve hepatic insulin resistance, and thus play a therapeutic role in T2DM.

This study investigated the immunological mechanisms of Ermiao powder in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis rats through the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor(α7nAChR)-Janus kinases 2(JAK2)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3) signaling pathway. A total of 56 female Wistar rats were randomly divided into the normal group(HG, n=8), collagen-induced arthritis(CIA) model group(CM, n=8), vagotomy group(VA, n=8), sham group(SH, n=8), Ermiao Powder treatment model group(EM, n=8), Ermiao Powder treatment for vagotomy group(EV, n=8) and Ermiao Powder treatment for sham group(ES, n=8). Following the establishment of CIA models in all groups except the HG group, the rats underwent unilateral vagotomy and sham operation(only the vagus nerve was separated). Drug treatment was started 7 days after surgery and continued for 35 days. The body weight and joints of rats were recorded, the pathological changes of the spleen of rats were observed, the contents of interleukin-6(IL-6), interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß) and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) in serum were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), and the mRNA and protein expression of α7nAChR-JAK2/STAT3 pathway core genes in spleen were detected by qRT-PCR, Western blot and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS:: showed that CM group(compared with HG group) and VA group(compared with CM group and SH group) had significantly decreased body weight(P<0.05, P<0.01), increased arthritis score(P<0.05, P<0.01), swollen ankle joints with deformity, and increased and enlarged lymph nodes in the spleen. There were also notable increases in the serum levels of IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α(P<0.05, P<0.01), and in the mRNA expressions of JAK2 and STAT3 in the spleen(P<0.05, P<0.01). The protein levels of phosphorylated JAK2(p-JAK2)/JAK2 and phospho-STAT3(p-STAT3)/STAT3 were significantly increased(P<0.05, P<0.01), and the number of JAK2, p-JAK2, STAT3 and p-STAT3 cells increased(P<0.05, P<0.01). EM group(compared with CM group) and ES group(compared with SH group) exhibited significantly increased body weight(P<0.01), decreased arthritis scores(P<0.05, P<0.01), reduced swelling of ankle joint, and decreased number and volume of lymph nodes in the spleen. Furthermore, serum levels of IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-α decreased(P<0.05, P<0.01), the mRNA expression of JAK2 and STAT3 in spleen decreased(P<0.05, P<0.01), the protein levels of p-JAK2/JAK2 and p-STAT3/STAT3 decreased(P<0.05, P<0.01), and the number of JAK2, p-JAK2, STAT3 and p-STAT3 cells decreased(P<0.05, P<0.01), whereas the mRNA and protein expressions of α7nAChR were significantly increased(P<0.01). Compared with the VA group, there was no significant differences in weight gain and arthritis scores in the EV group. The number of lymph nodes in the spleen was not significantly reduced and the volume was still large, suggesting the inflammation was not significantly improved. The serum levels of IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α were not significantly different, and there were no significant differences in α7nAChR, JAK2, and STAT3 mRNA expression in the spleen. The protein expression levels of p-JAK2/JAK2 and α7nAChR in spleen were lower(P<0.05, P<0.01), while p-STAT3/STAT3 protein expression was not significantly different. Besides, the two groups had no significant difference in the number of JAK2, p-JAK2, STAT3, and p-STAT3 cells. The results suggested that unilateral vagotomy promoted the increase of phosphorylated JAK2 and STAT3 expressions and exacerbated inflammation. In contrast, Ermiao Powder alleviated the inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis rats by activating the α7nAChR-mediated JAK2/STAT3 pathway through the vagus nerve, suggesting that the α7nAchR-JAK2/STAT3 pathway may be a potential target for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

We herein developed a dry powder formulation using disordered mesoporous silica particles (MSP) as the sole excipient and lysozyme, the most abundant antimicrobial proteins in the airways, as model protein. The MSP had the optimal size for lung deposition (2.43 ± 0.13 µm). A maximum lysozyme loading capacity (0.35 mg/mg) was achieved in 150 mM PBS, which was seven times greater than that in water. After washing and freeze-drying, we obtained a dry powder consisting of spherical, non-aggregated particles, free from residual buffer, or unabsorbed lysozyme. The presence of lysozyme was confirmed by TGA and FT-IR, while N2 adsorption/desorption and SAXS analysis indicate that the protein is confined within the internal mesoporous structure. The dry powder exhibited excellent aerodynamic performance (fine particle fraction <5 µm of 70.32%). Lysozyme was released in simulated lung fluid in a sustained kinetics and maintaining high enzymatic activity (71-91%), whereas LYS-MSP were shown to degrade into aggregated nanoparticulate microstructures, reaching almost complete dissolution (93%) within 24 h. MSPs were nontoxic to in vitro lung epithelium. The study demonstrates disordered MSP as viable carriers to successfully deliver protein to the lungs, with high deposition and retained activity.

Existing hormone replacement therapy for menopause has drawbacks, necessitating new treatment agents. Silkworms have demonstrated estrogenic properties, offering promising alternatives. We assessed the therapeutic effects of freeze-dried silkworm powder (SWP) on menopausal symptoms using an ovariectomized (OVX) mouse model. The experimental design comprised a sham surgery group (Sham), an OVX control group, a low-dose SWP group post-OVX (80 mg/kg, OVX-SWP-L), a high-dose SWP group post-OVX (160 mg/kg, OVX-SWP-H), and an estradiol treatment group post-OVX (OVX-E2). Treatments were administered orally thrice weekly over eight weeks; body weight was monitored weekly. The SWP-treated groups (SWP-L and SWP-H) exhibited less weight gain and increased uterine thickness than the OVX control. Molecular analyses demonstrated that SWP significantly enhanced the phosphorylation of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), ERK, and AKT. Furthermore, biochemical assays revealed reduced serum neutral lipids across all SWP treatment groups. Notably, HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly increased in the SWP-L group compared to the OVX group. Serum estradiol concentrations were elevated in all the SWP groups, with significant increases in the high-dose group. These findings indicate that SWP may promote the activation of estrogen receptor signaling and improve symptoms associated with estrogen deficiency during menopause.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing number of joint replacement surgeries, periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) has become a significant concern in orthopedic practice, making research on PJI prevention paramount. Therefore, the study will aim to compare the effect of combined usage of povidone-iodine and topical vancomycin powder to the use of povidone-iodine alone on the PJI incidence rate in patients undergoing primary total hip (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: The prospective randomized clinical trial will be conducted in two independent voivodeship hospitals with extensive experience in lower limb arthroplasties. The studied material will comprise 840 patients referred to hospitals for primary THA or TKA. The patients will be randomly allocated to two equal groups, receiving two different interventions during joint replacement. In group I, povidone-iodine irrigation and consecutively topical vancomycin powder will be used before wound closure. In group II, only povidone-iodine lavage irrigation will be used before wound closure. The primary outcome will be the incidence rate of PJI based on the number of patients with PJI occurrence within 90 days after arthroplasty. The occurrence will be determined using a combined approach, including reviewing hospital records for readmissions and follow-up phone interviews with patients. The infection will be diagnosed based on Musculoskeletal Infection Society criteria. The chi-square test will be used to compare the infection rates between the two studied groups. Risk and odds ratios for the between-groups comparison purposes will also be estimated. Medical cost analysis will also be performed. DISCUSSION: A randomized clinical trial comparing the effect of combined usage of povidone-iodine irrigation and vancomycin powder to the use of povidone-iodine irrigation alone in preventing PJIs after primary arthroplasty is crucial to advancing knowledge in orthopedic surgery, improving patient outcomes, and guiding evidence-based clinical practices. Investigating the extraction of bioactive compounds represents a hopeful direction for maximizing the value of longan fruit byproducts. This study explored the influence of ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) parameters-specifically ultrasonic power ratios, temperatures, and exposure times-utilizing water as a green solvent on several properties of the longan seeds extract (LSE). These properties encompassed the energy consumption of the UAE process (EC), extraction yield (EY), total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), and antioxidant activity (DPPH). Additionally, the study sought to optimize the conditions of UAE process and examine its thermodynamic properties. A three-level, three-factor full factorial design was utilized to assess the effects of different factors on LSE properties. Results indicated that EC, EY, TPC, TFC, and DPPH were significantly influenced by power ratios, temperatures, and exposure time. Moreover, the proposed models effectively characterized the variations in different properties during the extraction process. The optimized extraction conditions, aimed at minimizing EC while maximizing EY, TPC, TFC, and DPPH radical scavenging activity, were demonstrated as an ultrasonic power ratio of 44.4 %, a temperature of 60 °C, and an extraction time of 17.7 min. Optimization led to 563 kJ for EC, 7.85 % for EY, 47.21 mg GAE/mL for TPC, 96.8 mg QE/mL for TFC, and 50.15 % for DPPH radical scavenging activity. The results emphasized that the UAE process exhibited characteristics of endothermicity and spontaneity. The results provide valuable insights that could inform the enhancement of extraction processes, potentially benefiting industrial utilization and pharmaceutical formulations.

AIM: The Japanese Interventional oncology group (JIVROSG) showed the efficacy and safety of nonselective transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) with fine cisplatin powder (diamminedichloroplatinum; DDP-H) (65 mg/m2) and porous gelatin particles (DDP-H TACE) without lipiodol for extensive multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there are no studies on this method following the JIVROSG study. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of this new DDP-H TACE and its effect on liver function. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of TACE-naïve patients with multifocal HCC (Child-Pugh class A, up-to-seven out, no prior history of systemic therapy) who underwent whole-liver DDP-H TACE between January 2006 and December 2019. RESULTS: Sixty patients were included in this study. The median age of the patients was 71 (range, 35-88) years. The median maximum size of tumors was 26 (range, 8-184) mm; 86.7% of patients met the up-to-11 criteria out. The overall survival duration was 30.3 months. At the time of initial evaluation (median, 45 days), the overall response rate was 65.0%; the disease control rate was 86.7% based on the modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumors guideline. Although nine patients' liver function had deteriorated to Child-Pugh class B at initial evaluation, six of them recovered to Child-Pugh class A. Only three patients (5%) showed permanently impaired liver function. CONCLUSIONS: Whole-liver DDP-H TACE without lipiodol or beads effectively reduced tumors and preserved liver function.

Calcined bone is an attractive natural material for use as a bone substitute because of its cost-effectiveness and high biocompatibility, which are comparable to that of synthetic hydroxyapatite. However, the calcination process has significantly weakened the mechanical properties. In this study, a composite of calcined bovine bone powder reinforced with silane cross-linked alginate was prepared to assess its biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and mechanical compatibility as a bone substitute material. Culture studies with osteoblast-like cells (MC3T3-E1) showed no cytotoxicity toward the composite and exhibited general cell proliferative properties in its presence. In contrast, the composite reduced the alkaline phosphatase activity of osteoblasts but led to significant noncellular apatite deposition on the surface. In addition, quasi-static compression tests of the composite revealed mechanical properties comparable to those of human cancellous bone. The mechanical properties remained stable under wet conditions and did not deteriorate significantly even after 2 weeks of immersion in simulated body fluid at 37°C. The results show that this composite, composed of calcined bone powder and silane cross-linked alginate, is a promising bone substitute material with biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and mechanical compatibility.

In this study, a simple calcination route was adopted to prepare hausmannite Mn3O4 nanoparticles using rice powder as soft bio-template. Prepared Mn3O4 was characterized by Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), Powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Solid state UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. Mn-O stretching in tetrahedral site was confirmed by FTIR and Raman spectra. % of Mn and O content supported Mn3O4 formation. The crystallinity and grain size was found to be 68.76% and 16.43 nm, respectively; tetragonal crystal system was also cleared by XRD. TEM clarified the planes of crystal formed which supported the XRD results and BET demonstrated mesoporous nature of prepared Mn3O4 having low pore volume. Low optical band gap of 3.24 eV of prepared Mn3O4 nanoparticles indicated semiconductor property and was used as cathode material to fabricate CR-2032 coin cell of Aqueous Rechargeable Zinc Ion Battery (ARZIB). A reversible cyclic voltammogram (CV) showed good zinc ion storage performance. Low cell resistance was confirmed by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The coin cell delivered high specific discharge capacity of 240.75 mAhg-1 at 0.1 Ag-1 current density. The coulombic efficiency was found to be 99.98%. It also delivered excellent capacity retention 94.45% and 64.81% after 300 and 1000 charge-discharge cycles, respectively. This work offers a facile and cost effective approach for preparing cathode material of ARZIBs.

Unexpected cross-contamination by foreign components during the manufacturing and quality control of pharmaceutical products poses a serious threat to the stable supply of drugs and the safety of customers. In Japan, in 2020, a mix-up containing a sleeping drug went undetected by liquid chromatography during the final quality test because the test focused only on the main active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and known impurities. In this study, we assessed the ability of a powder rheometer to analyze powder characteristics in detail to determine whether it can detect the influence of foreign APIs on powder flow. Aspirin, which was used as the host API, was combined with the guest APIs (acetaminophen from two manufacturers and albumin tannate) and subsequently subjected to shear and stability tests. The influence of known lubricants (magnesium stearate and leucine) on powder flow was also evaluated for standardized comparison. Using microscopic morphological analysis, the surface of the powder was observed to confirm physical interactions between the host and guest APIs. In most cases, the guest APIs were statistically detected due to characteristics such as their powder diameter, pre-milling, and cohesion properties. Furthermore, we evaluated the flowability of a formulation incorporating guest APIs for direct compression method along with additives such as microcrystalline cellulose, potato starch, and lactose. Even in the presence of several additives, the influence of the added guest APIs was successfully detected. In conclusion, powder rheometry is a promising method for ensuring stable product quality and reducing the risk of unforeseen cross-contamination by foreign APIs.

A bioactive Pleurotus eryngii aqueous extract powder (SPAE) was obtained by spray drying and its performance in terms of physicochemical properties, in vitro digestion, inflammatory factors, and modulation of the intestinal microbiota was explored. The results indicated that the SPAE exhibited a more uniform particle size distribution than P. eryngii polysaccharide (PEP). Meanwhile, a typical absorption peak observed at 843 cm-1 in the SPAE FTIR spectra indicated the existence of α-glycosidic bonds. SPAE exhibited higher antioxidant abilities and superior resistance to digestion in vitro. In addition, SPAE supplementation to mice significantly reduced the release of factors that promote inflammation, enhanced the secretion of anti-inflammatory factors, and sustained maximum production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Additionally, it significantly enhanced the relative abundance of SCFAs-producing Akkermansia and reduced the abundance of Ruminococcus and Clostridiides in intestines of mice. These results show the potential of SPAE as a novel material with prebiotic effects for the food and pharmaceutical industries.
