RESUMEN

Objective: To evaluate the mental state and quality of life in patients with vasomotor rhinitis (VMR) before and after treatment, and to provide guidance for improving the overall health of VMR patients. Methods: Two hundred and twenty VMR patients (VMR group, 118 males, 102 females; aged from 18 to 72 years old), three hundred and twenty allergic rhinitis (AR) patients (AR group, 178 males, 142 females; aged from 18 to 79 years old) from January 2016 to September 2019 were selected in the otolaryngology clinic of Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University, four hundred and twenty-three healthy people (control group, 243 males, 180 females; aged from 19 to 70 years old) were selected in physical examination center at the same time by continuous enrollment method, symptom check list (SCL-90), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) were used to evaluate the mental state of VMR patients before and after treatment, and 12-item short form health survey version 2.0 (SF-12v2) was used to evaluate their quality of life, statistical data were collected and analyzed by ANOVA and t-test. Results: The scores of eight factors (physical function, role physical function, general health, vitality, role-emotional, mental health) of SF-12v2 in VMR patients before treatment were lower than that of posttreatment, that of AR patients and the control group, the differences were significant (all P<0.05), the scores of somatization, obsession, depression, anxiety and psychosis in SCL-90 in VMR patients before treatment were significantly higher than that of posttreatment, that of AR patients and the control group (all P<0.05), the SAS and SDS in VMR patients before treatment (51.28±16.32; 53.28±18.55) were significantly higher than that of posttreatment (38.53±13.21; 39.35±13.34), that of AR patients (42.23±14.32; 43.32±13.78) and the control group (29.78±10.07;33.46±10.55; t(SAS) were 9.007, 6.813 and 20.59; t(SDS) were 9.043, 7.154 and 17.260, all P<0.05). Conclusion: VMR patients generally suffer from psychological damage, which seriously affects the quality of life of the patients. On the basis of routine treatment, we should attach more importance to the negative psychology of VMR patients and intervene when necessary.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic systemic allergic disease with an association reported between allergy and anxiety. The objective of the current study was therefore to investigate and retrospectively evaluate the factors that may possibly induce state and trait anxiety among patients with AR and vasomotor rhinitis (VMR). METHODS: A total of 253 outpatients suffering from AR and 108 suffering from VMR were assessed for nasal symptoms experienced during the 14 days prior to assessment. All patients scored the severity of their symptoms on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and answered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaire to evaluate their state (STAI-S) and trait (STAI-T) anxiety scores. Pearson's correlation and multiple regression tests were employed to assess correlations between symptom scores and anxiety status scores. RESULTS: The STAI-S/T scores were not significantly different between AR and VMR patients; however, for AR patients, STAI-S and STAI-T were significantly associated with nasal obstruction and the total nasal symptom scores. Multiple regression analysis further demonstrated that only nasal obstruction significantly influenced both STAI-S and STAI-T scores. In contrast, nasal itching and total nasal symptom scores were significantly correlated with the STAI-S and STAI-T scores in VMR patients, whereas continuous sneezing VAS scores were significantly associated with only the STAI-S score. However, multiple regression analysis showed that the associations between any of the 4 nasal symptom scores and STAI-S and STAI-T scores were not significant. CONCLUSION: Nasal obstruction may play a prominent role in mediation of anxiety in patients suffering from AR, but not in patients suffering from VMR.

RESUMEN

CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that vidian neurectomy may be recommended as an effective method for the treatment of vasomotor rhinitis (VMR). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to study the feasibility and effectiveness of vidian neurectomy treatment under the nasal endoscope for VMR. METHODS: The study included 45 patients with VMR. They were all assigned to functional endoscopic surgery with vidian neurectomy. RESULTS: The obtained data showed that, using the rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire, vidian neurectomy treatment relieved the symptoms of VMR in 82.2% of the patients. Vidian neurectomy also led to the reduction of expression of several cytokines, including vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, calcitonin gene-related peptide, substance P, interleukin (IL)-4, and IL-5.

RESUMEN

It is still debatable whether anxiety and depression in patients affected by rhinitis could play a role in the genesis of the disease, whether they are a consequence of the symptoms. The aim of this study was to evaluate anxiety levels in both state and trait forms, and depression, in patients affected by allergic (AR) and vasomotor rhinitis (VMR). A total of 45 women, 24 AR and 21 VMR were compared with 64 healthy nonallergic women matched for age and sociodemographic characteristics. All subjects were administered the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Zung self-rating depression scale. The percentage of subjects with high levels of state anxiety was significantly higher in AR (p<0.005) and VMR (p<0.01) with respect to controls. The percentage of subjects with high levels of trait anxiety was significantly higher in AR (p<0.001) and VMR (p<0.05) than controls. There was no significant difference in depression between AR and VMR and controls. No significant difference was found in state anxiety, trait anxiety, or depression between AR and VMR. In conclusion, anxiety in patients with rhinitis is present both as a state and as a trait, at least when measured with the STAI.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: While previous studies of enrollment motivation have been conducted with either healthy subjects or subjects with certain other diseases, little is known about the motives of subjects with asthma or rhinitis symptoms who seek to enter clinical trials. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to assess the self-reported role that altruism, healthcare receipt, and financial gain play in the motivation of subjects with symptoms of bronchial asthma, seasonal allergic rhinitis, and perennial nonallergic rhinitis who attempted to enroll in clinical trials. METHODS: Subjects with symptoms of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and perennial nonallergic rhinitis who sought to enroll in phase III clinical trials completed surveys from December 1991 to August 1992 (n = 295). The importance of altruistic and nonaltruistic motives was rated on numerical scales. RESULTS: Improved control of symptoms and learning more about the illness and medications for treatment were the most important nonaltruistic motives (P less than .05). Financial motives and second opinion were moderately important but less important than healthcare motives (P less than .05). This population as a whole agreed that the altruistic motives listed in the survey were reasons to enroll. CONCLUSION: Subjects with symptoms of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and perennial nonallergic rhinitis entered clinical trials for altruistic reasons and to receive healthcare treatment for their chronic illness including related health education. For the entire group, self-reported financial motives were less important than illness-related healthcare.

RESUMEN

The correlation between rhinomanometry and subjective sensation of nasal obstruction was studied. Patients assessed their nasal airway patency using a visual analogue scale (VAS). The VAS results and rhinomanometry correlated better when unilateral nasal obstruction was evaluated compared to total nasal evaluation. When rhinomanometric data were divided into four clinically relevant grades of obstruction (very patent, normal, obstructed and very obstructed) and the quartiles of the VAS results were compared to these, the agreement was good or fairly good in 75-85% of cases. A similar result was also encountered when, in an experimental study, 30 individuals were asked to breathe through four artificial nose models with a varying inner diameter of 9-3 mm. Again, most subjects assessed these models logically, but in 11% of the cases the subject assessed the narrowest tube as patent or the widest tube as very obstructed. Our results prove the necessity of having some sort of objective method to evaluate nasal patency; if we rely only on the patient's sensation, we may get a misleading picture of his nasal function.
