Behçet's syndrome (BS) is a complex, multi-systemic disorder with a global occurrence, notably concentrated along the Silk Road. This study aimed to investigate gender-specific expressions and clinical phenotypes in BS patients within the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. A total of 290 BS patients were retrospectively analyzed between January 2013 and December 2023. Demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, medical treatment, and pathergy test results were obtained from a review of medical records. The mean age was 45.79 ± 13.05, with a male-to-female ratio of 48.6:51.4. Male patients had higher papulopustular lesions (p < 0.001) and ocular involvement (p = 0.036), while females showed more frequent genital ulcers (p = 0.032). Medication usage showed gender-based variations, notably higher corticosteroid, azathioprine, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitor (TNFi) use in males (p < 0.001). Cluster analysis revealed five distinct clusters, each with unique features and gender predominance. Cardiovascular type, ocular type, and skin type predominantly featured male patients, while joint involvement type and neurologic and mucosal involvement type were more prevalent among female patients with BS. This research contributes valuable insights into the gender-related clinical variations of BS within a specific geographic region, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of this challenging syndrome. The identification of distinct clinical phenotypes facilitates the development of tailored treatment strategies, potentially leading to improved outcomes for patients with BS.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of in ovo testosterone injection into the yolk sac of embryos on physiology and development of broiler chicks during the early posthatching period. A total of 1,010 hatching eggs were obtained from the Ross genotype. Trial design was conducted with a noninjected group (control) and injection groups in which 100 µL sesame oil, or 100 µL sesame oil + 0.50 µmol testosterone were injected into the yolk sac of the embryo on d 6 or d 12 of incubation. Testosterone hormone level was measured in the egg yolk and albumen at onset of incubation, in the yolk sac on d 19 of incubation and in the residual yolk sac at hatching. Weights of chick, yolk sac and organ, morphological traits (body length, lengths of bilateral traits and beak length), asymmetrical development of bilateral morphological traits and body mass index were measured at hatching and on d 7 after hatching. Testosterone, corticosterone and growth hormone levels were determined in blood plasma obtained from male chicks at hatching and on d 7 of chick age. Chick weight was not affected, plasma testosterone level and brain weight decreased, while body mass index, plasma corticosterone and growth hormone levels increased by administering 0.50 µmol testosterone on d 12 of embryonic age. However, plasma testosterone and growth hormone levels did not change, chick weight increased, while plasma corticosterone level and the chick body length decreased by administering 0.50 µmol testosterone on d 6 of embryonic age. A significant interaction between chick age and in ovo testosterone administration resulted in an increase in lung weight of chicks. In conclusion, this study found that in ovo testosterone administered at different embryonic ages due to age-specific effects of testosterone in the yolk sac of embryo modulates development related to physiological parameters of male broiler chicks during early posthatching period.

The aim of this study was to characterize the biodiversity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from spontaneously-fermented hull-less barley sourdough and to determine its technological properties. Biodiversity was investigated by analysis of colonies isolated from sourdough on four different agar media. Of the 80 isolates, 67 were rapidly pre-identified as LAB using Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). As a result of cluster analysis, 32 lactic acid bacteria chosen from different branches were identified. According to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results, 9 different species were identified: Pediococcus (dominant species), Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus musae, Lactobacillus paralimentarius, Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Lactobacillus equigenerosi. The most species and strain diversity among the media was determined in ModMRS environment. Unlike other studies about hull-less barley, Lactobacillus equigenerosi was identified in this study. LABs were identified with salt and acid tolerance. Generally, different levels of antibacterial activity in these species were shown against (rope spoilage) food borne pathogens. The greatest antimicrobial effect was observed for Pediococcus acidilactici SAB26, Lactobacillus plantarum SAB15 and Pediococcus acidilactici SAB13 compared to the other strains. Pediococcus species were found to have the highest antifungal effect against Penicillium carneum, Aspergillus flavus and A. niger. The phytase activity of LAB, which increases mineral bioavailability, was observed to be highest in Lactobacillus plantarum, Pediococcus pentosaceus, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides.

Human papillomavirus is responsible for anogenital warts and could be regarded as an indicator of possible sexual abuse in children. A genital wart was detected during an investigation of anti-hepatitis C virus positivity in a four-year-old male patient. No pathological findings of another sexually transmitted disease were found except complete cleft palate and circumferential lesions in the perianal region. No family member was anti-hepatitis C virus positive, but the patient's uncle and his wife had genital condylomata. Although detailed physical examination uncovered no other findings indicative of sexual abuse, suspicion of abuse could not be eliminated. Therefore, we wanted to draw the attention of health professionals to the association of anogenital warts and sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the hearing problems and tinnitus frequencies in adolescents at three public primary and two high schools. METHODS: This study was carried out at three public primary and two high schools. 428 Turkish school children (244 girls, 184 boys) were asked to voluntarily answer a set of questionnaires in their classrooms at the beginning of the training program. There were 250 students (105 male, 145 female) in Primary School and 178 (79 male, 99 female) students in High School. We used questionnaire to evaluate subjective tinnitus and hearing problems. Walkman usage, listening loud and noisy music, intra-familial physical trauma, concentration difficulty in class and school success were also evaluated. RESULTS: In age-related groups (Group 1=11-13 years; Group 2=13-15 years; Group 3=16-18 years), hearing loss was present in 32.1% of Group 1, 19% of Group 2 and 28.3% of Group 3. Listening loud and noisy music was reported in 81.8% of Group 1, 95.4% of Group 2 and 87% of Group 3. Tinnitus was present 36.8% in Group 2, 33.5% in Group 1 and 31.5% in Group 3. Tinnitus after listening loud music was present in 42.7% of Group 2, 36.1% of Group 3 and 25.6% of Group 1. Among all students with tinnitus, 19.5% considered their school success as very good, 41.1% as good and 39.4% as bad. In students, using Walkman, tinnitus was seen both in the right and left ears. CONCLUSION: Tinnitus may be seen in adolescents at primary and high schools. Listening loud and noisy music and Walkman usage may cause an increase in the frequency of tinnitus manifestation. Adolescents should be educated about the hazardous effects of loud music. Education should include families, teachers, students, and whole community. These issues should be taken into public health policy of the countries.
