RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of vibration and cold gel pack application on pain and anxiety levels of patients undergoing intravenous (IV) catheterization. DESIGN: A randomized controlled, pretest and post-test experimental study. METHODS: Catheterization was performed 60 seconds before the IV catheterization procedure was started by applying vibration and cold gel pack to patients in the experimental group. Patients in the control group underwent catheterization using standard procedures. FINDINGS: The mean pain scores of patients in the experimental group were lower than those of the patients in the control group. Intragroup analysis demonstrated that the mean scores obtained from the state anxiety and trait anxiety inventories after the study were not significantly different from those obtained before the study. CONCLUSIONS: Vibration and cold gel pack application is suggested to relive pain during IV catheterization in adults.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Comatose patients are exposed to sensory deprivation in the intensive care units. Auditory stimulation of patients who are unconscious is a nonmedical procedure. This study examines the effect of organized voice, performed by a nurse, on the state of consciousness of comatose patients in intensive care units. METHOD: This randomized controlled trial study of 60 patients was conducted fitting between August 2017 and February 2018. For 10 days, patients received the voice of a male nurse twice a day in the morning and night shifts, recorded on MP3 and repeated at least 3 to 4 times. Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores were recorded by the researcher before and after auditory stimulation. RESULTS: Patient mean age was 69.2 years; 56.7% of the experimental group and 53.3% of the control group were male. On the first day in the morning and evening after auditory stimulation, the mean GCS was 4.8 in the experimental group and 4.7 in the control group. Before and after the intervention on the 10th day after auditory stimulation, the mean GCS of patients was 9.5 in the experimental group and 7.1 in the control group in the morning and 9.6 and 7.2, respectively, in the evening. No significant differences in mean GCS by group were observed for the first 3 days (P > .05). However, the difference in mean GCS scores of the 2 groups was statistically significant after the third day (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Auditory stimulation is associated with higher GCS in comatose patients.

RESUMO

Constipation is a health problem commonly seen in the elderly. In the present study, the effect of abdominal massage on constipation in the elderly was examined. The study sample consisted of 22 elderly people residing in a nursing home in the province of Manisa who were suffering from constipation in June 2014 to February 2015. The following were used to collect data: a case identification form; the Rome III Functional Constipation Diagnosis Criteria Form; the Bristol Stool Scale, consisting of the Recall Bias and Visual Scale Analog; and the Standard Diary Constipation Monitoring Form. The comparison of the mean scores obtained before, during, and after the implementation of abdominal massage in the elderly revealed that the number of bowel movements, stool weight, and stool consistency scores increased during and after the implementation. The differences between the mean intra- and postimplementation scores in terms of stool weight and between the pre- and postimplementation mean scores in terms of stool consistency were not statistically significant. There was a statistically significant difference between straining scores except for those obtained during intra- and postimplementation application. It was determined that abdominal massage increased the number of bowel movements, stool weight, and stool consistency, decreased the mean scores for straining, and decreased inability to completely empty the bowels (except on the implementation days).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nursing education is a process aimed both at theoretical knowledge and skill development. The Fundamentals of Nursing is a course that furnishes students with professional knowledge, concepts and technical skills, and, also, is the keystone of nursing education in our country. Students experience a great deal of anxiety as they face basic nursing practices for the first time. Studies have revealed the effectiveness of music in relieving anxiety in many patient groups. However, no previous studies were found where music was used with the intent to lower the anxiety that students experience over the course of skill learning. The experimental study is aimed at determining the effect of music in decreasing anxiety during the first nursing practices of students in a laboratory setting. METHODS: The experimental study was conducted on nursing students of Akdeniz University attending Fundamentals of Nursing, a freshman course, during the 2013-2014 academic year. A total of 73 students, of which 34 were assigned to the experimental group and 39 to the control group, participated in the study. Data collection was carried out using (a) the student identification form prepared by the authors, (b) skill control lists and (c) the Situational Anxiety Scale. The students in the experimental group listened to music during blood draw skill practice in a laboratory environment. The students were assessed with respect to their performance of blood drawing through skill control lists using the statements "True", "False" and "Forgotten". The anxiety levels and vital signs of students were assessed before and after the practice. RESULTS: The mean age of the students was 19.08. 64.7% of the experimental group and 82.1% of the control group were female. The age group of 64.7% of the students in the experimental group was female. The age group of 82.1% of the students in the control group was female. After music listening, the mean anxiety score of the students was 38.70±3.83 in the experimental group and 39.76±4.72 in the control group. The difference between the mean anxiety scores of the two groups was statistically significant (p<0.05). The evaluation made before and after the blood draw revealed a statistically significant difference in diastolic blood pressure values in the experimental group that listened to music(p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study showed that listening to music decreased the anxiety levels of nursing students during their first blood draw experience.
