RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nurses are in a unique position to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and to prevent and intervene in climate change. Determining nursing students' levels of attitudes and knowledge on this subject is important in determining the content of nursing education programs. OBJECTIVES: To determine the nursing students' attitudes towards sustainable development and their knowledge of climate change, and to identify determinants associated with these parameters. DESIGN: A descriptive and correlational design was used. SETTINGS: National Student Nurses' Association in Turkey. PARTICIPANTS: The sample of study consisted of 481 nursing students who were members of the National Student Nurses' Association. METHODS: Data were collected online with the descriptive characteristics' questionnaire, the Attitudes Towards Sustainable Development Scale, and the Climate Change Knowledge Test. We used Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman correlation analysis to analyze the data obtained from the scales. RESULTS: The participants' mean sustainable development attitude score was 82.61 ± 12.69 and mean climate change knowledge score was 6.47 ± 1.44. There was a relationship between the sustainable development attitude and the variables such as gender, grade, warning people around them to be sensitive about environmental pollution, following the news about environmental problems, taking precautions about sustainable development and climate change in daily life, and receiving education about sustainable development and climate change in the nursing education. There was a relationship between climate change knowledge and the variables such as gender, grade, membership in an environmental organization, method of keeping up with environmental issues, and receiving education on sustainable development and climate change in nursing education. CONCLUSION: Although the students displayed favorable attitudes towards sustainable development at a good level, their knowledge of climate change was not adequate. Thus, we recommend that sustainable development and climate change issues should be integrated into nursing education curricula to improve students' attitudes towards and knowledge and awareness of sustainable development and climate change.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Asthma is common among Turkish schoolchildren, and teachers thus have considerable responsibility for asthma management in schools. However, there is no valid and reliable instrument to evaluate teachers' asthma management self-efficacy in schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Asthma Self-Efficacy Scale (ASE-T) among elementary school teachers. METHODS: This methodological study included 216 elementary school teachers. The reliability of the ASE-T was expressed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and item-total score correlations. The validity of the scale was examined via confirmatory factor analysis, item analysis, and the content validity index. RESULTS: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.70, and the item-total score correlations ranged between 0.24 and 0.57. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis determined the model fit indices to be χ2/df = 1.461, RMSEA = 0.046, GFI = 0.94, AGFI = 0.91, NNFI = 0.98, and CFI = 0.92. The item analysis results revealed the differences between teachers with low and high levels of self-efficacy. CONCLUSION: The results indicated the usefulness of the ASE-T for Turkish teachers. It is essential to determine teachers' competence in asthma management in order to improve their performance in school settings.

RESUMO

Background: Children are affected by food allergies more than adults, so teachers have the most significant responsibility for food allergy management in schools. Objectives: To determine the effect of food allergies and anaphylaxis management training on Turkish teachers’ self-efficacy. Material and methods: In this study, 90 teachers were selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected before and immediately after the training on School Personnel’s Self-Efficacy in Managing Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis at School Scale. A training program that consisted of 60-minute sessions was conducted. Data were evaluated using the paired samples t-test. Results: There was a significant difference between the teachers’ self-efficacy levels before (22.76±8.94) and after the training (32.81±6.09), and self-efficacy levels significantly increased (p < .05). Conclusions: The training increased the teachers’ self-efficacy in managing food allergies and anaphylaxis (AU)

RESUMO

The increase in information technologies has made it easy to access much health information online. In this context, e-health literacy emerges as a skill for acquiring health information. Obtaining health information through information technology for health promotion requires e-health literacy. The aim of this study was to examine the e-health literacy and the health-promoting behaviors of Turkish hospital nurses directly involved in patient care. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out with 451 nurses working in two large training and research hospitals in Izmir between June and August 2019. Data were collected using the Turkish version of the Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale II and the Turkish version of the e-Health Literacy Scale. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis were used for data analysis. Nurses were found to have moderate levels of healthy lifestyle behaviors (130.56 ± 21.90) and e-health literacy (29.87 ± 5.39). There was significant relationship between the e-health literacy levels of the nurses and their overall health-promoting behaviors (R = .349; F = 12,381; p = 0.013), health responsibility (R = .326; F = 10,567; p = 0.014), spiritual development (R = .242; F = 5.276; p = 0.001) and interpersonal relations (R = .343; F = 9.896; p = 0.001) scores. The results of this study showed that the development of strategies to improve the e-health literacy of nurses may contribute to the maintenance of health-promoting behaviors of both nurses and their patients.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study examined the relationship between individuals' attitudes toward violence against women and their perception of gender roles. DESIGN AND METHODS: This descriptive and cross-sectional study design (n = 635) collected data using the ISKEBE Violence against Women Attitude Scale and the Perception of Gender Scale. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analyses. RESULTS: About 37.5% of the participants had been exposed to violence. A moderately positive correlation was found between the participants' scores on gender perception and attitude toward violence against women (r = 0.551, p < 0.000). PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Women did not approve of violence against women more than men did. Participants with higher education levels and employment had a more negative attitude toward violence against women.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study assessed the association between health literacy (both of children and their parents) and body weight in Turkish schoolchildren. This study also aimed to determine the predictors of body weight in children. DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a descriptive, correlational study that enrolled students and their parents from Turkish secondary schools. Data were collected using the Health Literacy Scale for School-Aged Children, Adult Health Literacy Scale, socio-demographic questionnaires and anthropometric measurements. RESULTS: The mean child age was 12.76 ± 1.27; 40.2% were male, 41.5% had higher health literacy and 17.2% were obese. Child health literacy did not correlate with body mass index (r = 0.04, p > 0.05), but correlated positively with parent health literacy (r = 0.17, p < 0.05). Parent body mass index was the only explanatory variable in child body mass index. CONCLUSIONS: Obesity in schoolchildren correlates with parental obesity. The results showed parents should participate in practising strategies that aim to prevent and treat childhood obesity. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Children's health literacy skills can be improved to develop their health and academic achievements.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: When stroke survivors return to their lives in society, they often face issues such as physical or cognitive impairment, dependence on others, social isolation, and reduced self-esteem, which may lead to disastrous consequences in patients' self-perceived self-efficacy and self-confidence in everyday life. Self-efficacy plays an important role in the well-being of stroke patients. Accurate assessment of the stroke patients' self-efficacy by health professionals is critical to obtaining data regarding their functioning levels. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Stroke Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (T-SSEQ). METHODS: A sample of 185 stroke patients (mean age = 64.78 ± 10.7) was recruited from a university hospital in Izmir, Turkey. Data were collected between April and October 2016. Translation and back-translation processes were used to translate the T-SSEQ into Turkish. Data were analyzed using the Rasch partial credit model with the Winsteps program to investigate the response scale analysis, tests of fit to the model, unidimensionality, local dependency, item and person separation reliability, separation index, and differential item functioning. RESULTS: The Rasch analysis showed goodness of fit for both the activity and self-management subscales. Moreover, both scales were identified as being unidimensional in structure. Furthermore, the participants were able to distinguish between the categories of the response options, and scale reliability was supported for both subscales using Rasch analyses. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: These results indicate that the T-SSEQ is acceptable for use with Turkish stroke patients in both practice and research settings. Furthermore, the questionnaire is suitable for nurses to use in designing interventions and evaluating stroke patients' self-efficacy in clinics, home care, and rehabilitation centers.
