OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of good self-reported health (SRH) in subpopulations based on the social determinants of health and to investigate the association between education (measured in years of schooling) and good SRH among men and women aged 18-49 years in Yangon Region, Myanmar. DESIGN: Analysis of data from a population-based, cross-sectional study conducted in Yangon, Myanmar, from October to November 2016. A multistage sampling procedure was employed, and structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with standardised questions adapted from the Myanmar Demographic and Health Survey. Prevalence ratios (PRs) with 95% CIs were estimated using Poisson regression analyses by sex. SETTING: Urban and rural areas of Yangon Region, Myanmar. PARTICIPANTS: The sample included 2,506 participants (91.8% response rate) aged 18-49 years and excluded nuns, monks, soldiers, institutionalised people and individuals deemed too ill physically and/or mentally to participate. RESULTS: The prevalence of good SRH was 61.2% (95% CI 59.3 to 63.1), with higher rates among men (72.0%, 95% CI 69.3 to 74.5), younger individuals (69.2%, 95% CI 66.2 to 72.1), urban residents (63.6%, 95% CI 60.8 to 66.3), extended family dwellers (66.6%, 95% CI 63.7 to 69.4) and those with a higher level of education (66.0%, 95% CI 61.3 to 70.5). After adjusting for confounders (age and area of residence), the association between years of schooling and SRH (PR) was 1.01 (95% CI 1.01 to 1.02, p=0.002) in men and 1.01 (95% CI 0.99 to 1.02, p=0.415) in women. CONCLUSIONS: Good SRH was more prevalent among men than among women. Additionally, a 1-year increase in education was associated with a 1% increase in the prevalence of good SRH among men, whereas the association was not statistically significant among women. In order to enhance the educational benefits of health in Myanmar, we recommend a higher focus on the length of education and addressing gender inequalities in wage return from education.

Advancements in operando techniques have unraveled the complexities of the Electrode Electrolyte Interface (EEI) in electrochemical energy storage devices. However, each technique has inherent limitations, often necessitating adjustments to experimental conditions, which may compromise accuracy. To address this challenge, a novel battery cell design is introduced, integrating piezoelectric sensors with electrochemical analysis for surface-sensitive operando measurements. This innovative approach aims to overcome conventional limitations by accommodating commercial-grade battery electrodes within a single body, alongside a piezoelectric sensor. This enables operando electrogravimetric measurements to be realized, and the electrochemistry of a battery to be more faithfully reproduced at the sensor level. A proof of concept is carried out on both Li-ion (LiFePO4//Graphite) and Na-ion (Na3V2(PO4)2F3//Hard carbon) systems, utilizing commercially available powder electrodes. In both cases, the results reveal rational mass variations at the sensor level during the cycling of commercial electrodes with mass loadings several orders of magnitude higher, while performing Galvanostatic Charge Discharge (GCD) tests across various C-rates. This innovative design opens up possibilities for a broader application of operando electrogravimetry within the battery community, to enhance the understanding of EEI behavior and facilitate the development of more efficient energy storage solutions.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most effective treatment for end-stage adult knee osteoarthritis, but it has been reported that patient satisfaction may vary. A malfunction of the patellofemoral joint may produce anterior knee pain (AKP) for several reasons. While some surgeons systematically resurface the patella despite the risk of potential complications such as fracture, loosening, or wear of the patella, others prefer to preserve it to reduce AKP and revision rates. This study aimed to evaluate whether patellar resurfacing had better clinical and functional outcomes, complications, and revision rates in patients undergoing simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study, including patients who underwent bilateral simultaneous TKA in which the patella was replaced in one knee and preserved in the other, with a minimum follow-up of 7 years. We assessed clinical and functional outcomes with the Knee Society Score (KSS) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS); complications and revision rates were also registered. RESULTS: The final series consisted of 43 patients with 86 knee arthroplasties. After a mean of 7.6 years of follow-up, no significant differences were found regarding KSS (clinical: 82.8 ± 7.4 versus 83.2 ± 3.4, p = 0.92; functional 89.1 ± 8.2: versus 90.4 ± 6.8; p = 0.99), VAS (2.0 ± 0.9 versus 1.8 ± 1.0; p = 0.84), complications (10.5% versus 8.1%; p = 0.57), or revision rates (2.3% versus 2.3%; p = 0.99) when comparing patellar resurfacing versus retention. CONCLUSION: In the context of total knee arthroplasty, patellar replacement did not demonstrate statistically significant differences concerning patellar retention in clinical nor functional outcomes, AKP, complications, or revision rates after a minimum of 7 years of follow-up.

Data from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) wearables leveraged with machine learning algorithms provide an unprecedented potential for the early detection of adverse physiological events. However, several challenges inhibit this potential, including (1) heterogeneity among and within participants that make scaling detection algorithms to a general population less precise, (2) confounders that lead to incorrect assumptions regarding a participant's healthy state, (3) noise in the data at the sensor level that limits the sensitivity of detection algorithms, and (4) imprecision in self-reported labels that misrepresent the true data values associated with a given physiological event. The goal of this study was two-fold: (1) to characterize the performance of such algorithms in the presence of these challenges and provide insights to researchers on limitations and opportunities, and (2) to subsequently devise algorithms to address each challenge and offer insights on future opportunities for advancement. Our proposed algorithms include techniques that build on determining suitable baselines for each participant to capture important physiological changes and label correction techniques as it pertains to participant-reported identifiers. Our work is validated on potentially one of the largest datasets available, obtained with 8000+ participants and 1.3+ million hours of wearable data captured from Oura smart rings. Leveraging this extensive dataset, we achieve pre-symptomatic detection of COVID-19 with a performance receiver operator characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) of 0.725 without correction techniques, 0.739 with baseline correction, 0.740 with baseline correction and label correction on the training set, and 0.777 with baseline correction and label correction on both the training and the test set. Using the same respective paradigms, we achieve ROC AUCs of 0.919, 0.938, 0.943 and 0.994 for the detection of self-reported fever, and 0.574, 0.611, 0.601, and 0.635 for detection of self-reported shortness of breath. These techniques offer improvements across almost all metrics and events, including PR AUC, sensitivity at 75% specificity, and precision at 75% recall. The ring allows continuous monitoring for detection of event onset, and we further demonstrate an improvement in the early detection of COVID-19 from an average of 3.5 days to an average of 4.1 days before a reported positive test result.

Natural fluctuations in cardiac activity modulate brain activity associated with sensory stimuli, as well as perceptual decisions about low magnitude, near-threshold stimuli. However, little is known about the relationship between fluctuations in heart activity and other internal representations. Here we investigate whether the cardiac cycle relates to learning-related internal representations - absolute and signed prediction errors. We combined machine learning techniques with electroencephalography with both simple, direct indices of task performance and computational model-derived indices of learning. Our results demonstrate that just as people are more sensitive to low magnitude, near-threshold sensory stimuli in certain cardiac phases, so are they more sensitive to low magnitude absolute prediction errors in the same cycles. However, this occurs even when the low magnitude prediction errors are associated with clearly suprathreshold sensory events. In addition, participants exhibiting stronger differences in their prediction error representations between cardiac cycles exhibited higher learning rates and greater task accuracy.

Garlic is rich in bioactive compounds that are effective against colon cancer cells. This study tests the antioxidant and antiproliferative effects of cold-extracted white and black garlic extracts. Black garlic extracted in water (SSU) exhibits the highest antioxidant activity, phenolic content, and flavonoid content, while black garlic extracted in ethanol (SET) shows the lowest values. Caspase-3 activity is notably higher in the white garlic extracted in methanol (BME), white garlic extracted in methanol combines with 5-FU, black garlic extracted in ethanol (SET), black garlic extracted in ethanol combines with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and 5-FU treatments compare to the control group (p > 0.05). BME+5-FU displays the highest caspase-8 activity (p < 0.05). A decrease in NF-κB levels is observed in the SET+5-FU group (p>0.05), while COX-2 activities decrease in the BME, SET+5-FU, SET, and 5-FU groups (p>0.05). Wound healing increases in the BME, BME+5-FU, SET+5-FU, and 5-FU groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, aqueous black garlic extract may exhibit pro-oxidant activity despite its high antioxidant capacity. It is worth noting that exposure to heat-treated food and increased sugar content may lead to heightened inflammation and adverse health effects. This study is the first to combine garlic with chemo-preventive drugs like 5-FU in Caco-2 cells.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have the ability to self-renew and are multi-potent. They are a primary candidate for cell-based therapy due to their potential anti-cancer effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro anti-leukemic effect of Wharton's Jelly-derived MSC (WJ-MSC) on the leukemic cell lines K562 and HL-60. METHODS: In this present study, WJ-MSCs were isolated from human umbilical cord. The cells were incubated according to the standard culture conditions and characterized by flow cytometry. For experiments, WJ-MSC and leukemic cells were incubated in the direct co-culture at a ratio of 1:5 (leukemia cells: WJ-MSC). HUVEC cells were used as a non-cancerous cell line model. The apoptotic effect of WJ-MSCs on the cell lines was analyzed using Annexin V/PI apoptosis assay. RESULTS: After the direct co-culture of WJ-MSCs on leukemic cell lines, we observed anti-leukemic effects by inducing apoptosis. We had two groups of determination apoptosis with and without WJ-MSCs for all cell lines. Increased apoptosis rates were observed in K562 and HL-60 cell lines, whereas the apoptosis rates in HUVEC cells were low. CONCLUSIONS: MSCs are known to inhibit the growth of tumors of both hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic origin in vitro. In our study, WJ-MSC treatment strongly inhibited the viability of HL-60 and K562 and induced apoptosis. Our results also provided new insights into the inhibition of tumor growth by WJ-MSCs in vitro. In the future, WJ-MSCs could be used to inhibit cancer cells in clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Isolated mitral valve aneurysm is rarely reported in children. In most cases it is associated with an underlying disease such as infective endocarditis. MVA can lead to severe complications that needs surgical intervention. CASE: In this report, we present a 9-year old asymptomatic male patient with anterior mitral valve aneurysm and rhythm disturbance diagnosed incidentally during pre-operative evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: Being rare in children, isolated MVA should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of mass lesions seen on the atrial side of the mitral valve. A 24-hour electrocardiogram may define subtle rhythm disturbances in these patients.

INTRODUCTION: Aseptic total knee arthroplasty (TKA) failure has been associated with radiolucent lines. This study aimed to determine the impact of the early appearance of radiolucent lines (linear images of 1, 2, or > 2mm at the cement-bone interface) around the TKA on prosthetic survival and functional outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients during a 2-20 years follow-up. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a consecutive series of RA patients treated with TKA between 2000 and 2011. We comparatively analyzed patients with and without radiolucent lines around implants. Clinical outcomes were assessed with the knee society score (KSS) collected before surgery, at years 2, 5, and 10, and at the last postoperative follow-up. The knee society roentgenographic evaluation system was used to analyze the impact of radiolucent lines around the implants at 1, 2, 5, and more than ten years of follow-up. The reoperation and prosthetic survival rates were calculated at the end of the follow-up. RESULTS: The study series included 72 TKAs with a median follow-up of 13.2 years (range: 4.0-21.0), of which 16 (22.2%) had radiolucent lines. We did not observe aseptic failure, and prosthetic survival at the end of the study was 94.4% (n=68). The KSS improved significantly (p<0.001) between preoperative values at 2, 5, and 10 years and the end of follow-up, with no differences between patients with and without radiolucent lines. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that the early appearance of radiolucent lines around a TKA in RA patients does not significantly impact prosthetic survival or long-term functional outcomes at 13 years of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Even though robotic therapy is becoming more commonly used in research protocols for lower limb stroke rehabilitation, there still is a significant gap between research evidence and its use in clinical practice. Therefore, the present study was designed assuming that the wearable mobile gait device training for chronic stroke patients might have different effects on functional independence when compared to training with a stationary gait device. The present study aims to examine the effects of gait training with ExoAthlet exoskeleton and Lokomat Free-D on functional independence, functional capacity, and quality of life in chronic stroke patients. METHODS: The present study included 32 chronic stroke patients. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. Functional independence of patients was evaluated by using Functional Independence Measure (FIM), physical function was assessed by using the 30-second chair stand test (30-CST), functional capacity was measured by using the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), and quality of life was assessed by using Short Form 36 (SF36). All participants underwent a conventional physiotherapy program for eight weeks, three sessions per week, and each session lasted 60 min. After the physiotherapy program, one group received gait training by using ExoAthlet exoskeleton (ExoAtlet 1 model/2019, Russia), while the other group received training by using Lokomat Free-D (Hocoma, Lokomat Pro Free-D model/2015, Switzerland). Participants were assessed at baseline and post-intervention. RESULTS: Results achieved in this study revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between FIM, 30-CST, 6MWT, and SF36 scores before and after the treatment in both groups (p < 0.05).There was no difference in FIM, 30-CST, and 6MWT results between Exoskeleton ExoAthlet and Lokomat Free-D groups (p > 0.05). However, there was a statistically significant difference between Exoskeleton ExoAthlet and Lokomat Free-D groups in terms of SF-36 sub-parameters "vitality", "mental health", "bodily pain", and "general health perception" (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that the use of ExoAthlet exoskeleton and Lokomat Free-D in addition to conventional physiotherapy, was effective in improving functional independence, physical function, functional capacity, and quality of life among chronic stroke patients. Incorporation of robotic gait aids into rehabilitation for chronic stroke patients might offer significant advantages.

AIM: In this study, it is aimed to analyze the data of children who were referred to our clinic for pre-participation sports screening. METHODS: Data, between September 2017 and December 2021, had been analyzed. All these subjects had been questioned for their personal and family medical stories and examined for cardiovascular system findings. Electrocardiography (ECG) and echocardiography were applied to all of them. RESULTS: 11487 children were consulted to the cardiology clinic for pre-sports participation screening. The mean age was 12.7±4,57 (7-18 years). 34/11487(0,29%) subjects weren't allowed to participate in sports activities at first. In 23 of 34 subjects, cardiac arrhythmias were established. 15 had Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, 3 subjects had ventricular extrasystole, and also ventricular tachycardia in one of them. Four subjects had long QT syndrome and one had ST elevation with the pre-diagnosis of coronary artery disease. ECG screening alone aided in identifying asymptomatic (0.05%) that could have been potentially at risk for sudden cardiac death. CONCLUSION: Positive ECG and echocardiography findings involve a very little ratio.But ECG involves an important tool for screening lethal cardiac arrhythmias in asymptomatic patients.If ECG or echocardiography couldn't be taken, further evaluation should be necessary with symptoms and/or family history.

PURPOSE: Dry eye syndrome (DES) is one of the most common diseases of the ocular surface. Affected persons suffer from different subjective complaints, with sometimes severe impairment in the quality of life. The aetiology and pathogenesis are multifactorial, multifaceted, and not yet fully understood. The present study is intended to provide deeper insights into possible triggering factors and correlating comorbidities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In German ophthalmological practices, 306 persons (174 women, 132 men, age: 18 - 87 years) were interviewed by questionnaire on concomitant diseases and possible further triggering factors. DES was diagnosed by an ophthalmologist in 170 cases. The statistical comparative analysis between persons with and without DES was carried out using the chi-squared test (SPSS statistical software). RESULTS: DES occurred with significantly (p < 0.05) increased frequency in women over 40 years of age, as well as in persons exposed to screen work, air conditioning, persons with chronic ocular inflammation, myomas (hysterectomy), dry skin, arterial hypertonicity in need of medication, cardiac arrhythmias, fatty liver, gastric ulcer, appendicitis, cholecystectomy, depression, hyperlipidaemia, hyperuricaemia, osteoporosis, and nephrolithiasis. CONCLUSION: Some of the known comorbidities and DES risk factors, e.g., computer work or depression, were confirmed. In contrast, the higher prevalence of hyperlipidaemia, hyperuricaemia, osteoporosis, nephrolithiasis, and fibroids among DES patients has not previously been reported. Additional studies should be performed on causal connections between DES and specific comorbidities.

After hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, chimerism assay is a useful approach to monitor the success of the transplant and to select the appropriate treatment strategy, such as donor leukocyte infusion or immunosuppressive drug dosage. Short tandem repeat PCR is the method that has been accepted as the gold standard for chimerism. However, it has not yet been sufficient to detect mixed chimerism in patients with minimal residual disease. Simultaneously, recent years have been marked by developing sensitive, high-throughput, and accurate molecular genetic assays. These novel methods have subsequently been adapted for the analysis of post-transplant chimerism. In this review, we discuss the technical features of both novel and conventional gold standard chimerism assays. We also discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

Among a variety of promising cathode materials for Na-ion batteries, polyanionic Na-insertion compounds are among the preferred choices due to known fast sodium transfer through the ion channels along their framework structures. The most interesting representatives are Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) and Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (NVPF), which display large Na+ diffusion coefficients (up to 10-9 m2 s-1 in NVP) and high voltage plateaux (up to 4.2 V for NVPF). While the diffusion in the solid material is well-known to be the rate-limiting step during charging, already being thoroughly discussed in the literature, interfacial transport of sodium ions from the liquid electrolyte toward the electrode was recently shown to be important due to complex ion desolvation effects at the surface. In order to fill the blanks in the description of the electrode/electrolyte interface in Na-ion batteries, we performed a molecular dynamics study of the local nanostructure of a series of carbonate-based sodium electrolytes at the NVP and the NVPF interfaces along with careful examination of the desolvation phenomenon. We show that the tightness of solvent packing at the electrode surface is a major factor determining the height of the free energy barrier associated with desolvation, which explains the differences between the NVP and the NVPF structures. RESUMO

The Social Readjustment Rating Scale, originally devised in 1967 by Holmes and Rahe, measures the impact of life events stress. At the time, the SRRS advanced its field of research by standardising the impact of stress with a set of independently derived weights called 'life change units' (LCUs) for 43 life events found to predict illness onset. The scale has been criticised for being outdated, e.g. "Mortgage over $10,000" and biased, e.g. "Wife begin or stop work". The aim of this cross-sectional survey study is to update and improve the SRRS whilst allowing backwards compatibility. We successfully updated the SRRS norms/LCUs using the ratings of 540 predominantly UK adults aged 18 to 84. Moreover, we also updated wording of 12 SRRS items and evaluated the impact of demographics, personal experience and loneliness. Using non-parametric frequentist and Bayesian statistics we found that the updated weights were higher but broadly consistent with those of the original study. Furthermore, changes to item wording did not affect raters' evaluations relative to the original thereby ensuring cross-comparability with the original SRRS. The raters were not unduly influenced by their personal experiences of events nor loneliness. The target sample was UK rather than US-based and was proportionately representative regarding age, sex and ethnicity. Moreover, the age range was broader than the original SRRS. In addition, we modernised item wording, added one optional extra item to the end of the scale to evaluate the readjustment to living alone and identified 3 potential new items proposed by raters. Backwards-compatibility is maintained.

BACKGROUND: Aptamers, which are biomaterials comprised of single-stranded DNA/RNA that form tertiary structures, have significant potential as next-generation materials, particularly for drug discovery. The systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) method is a critical in vitro technique employed to identify aptamers that bind specifically to target proteins. While advanced SELEX-based methods such as Cell- and HT-SELEX are available, they often encounter issues such as extended time consumption and suboptimal accuracy. Several In silico aptamer discovery methods have been proposed to address these challenges. These methods are specifically designed to predict aptamer-protein interaction (API) using benchmark datasets. However, these methods often fail to consider the physicochemical interactions between aptamers and proteins within tertiary structures. RESULTS: In this study, we propose AptaTrans, a pipeline for predicting API using deep learning techniques. AptaTrans uses transformer-based encoders to handle aptamer and protein sequences at the monomer level. Furthermore, pretrained encoders are utilized for the structural representation. After validation with a benchmark dataset, AptaTrans has been integrated into a comprehensive toolset. This pipeline synergistically combines with Apta-MCTS, a generative algorithm for recommending aptamer candidates. CONCLUSION: The results show that AptaTrans outperforms existing models for predicting API, and the efficacy of the AptaTrans pipeline has been confirmed through various experimental tools. We expect AptaTrans will enhance the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of SELEX in drug discovery. In this study, QuEChERS extraction was combined with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) to extract pesticides from tropical fruits for determination by a highly accurate and sensitive liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS/MS) system. The QuEChERS method served as a matrix clean-up tool and the DLLME method preconcentrated the analytes for their determination at trace levels. All parameter variables of the DLLME method were optimized to improve the extraction output and lower the limits of detection and quantification (LOD and LOQ) for all the analytes. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the LOD and LOQ values were found in the range of 0.004-0.013 and 0.27-0.61µg l-1, respectively. The detection limits achieved by direct LC-QTOF-MS/MS analysis were increased by about 10-260 folds using the optimized DLLME method. To assess the accuracy and applicability of the developed method, spike recovery experiments on tropical fruits were carried out. The matrix matching calibration method was used to enhance the quantification accuracy of the analytes in kiwi, pineapple, and mango matrices, with percent recoveries ranging between 89 and 117%.

Stress and normal ageing produce allostatic load, which may lead to difficulties with cognition thereby degrading quality of life. The current study's objective was to assess whether ageing and cumulative stress interact to accelerate cognitive decline. With 60 participants, Marshall et al. found that ageing and cumulative stress interact significantly to impair working memory performance in older adults, suggesting vulnerability to the cumulative effects of life events beyond 60 years old. To replicate and extend this finding, we increased the sample size by conducting 3 independent studies with 156 participants and improved the statistical methods by conducting an iterative Bayesian meta-analysis with Bayes factors. Bayes factors deliver a more comprehensive result because they provide evidence for either the null hypothesis (H0), the alternative hypothesis (H1) or for neither hypothesis due to evidence not being sufficiently sensitive. Young (18-35 yrs) and older (60-85 yrs) healthy adults were categorised as high or low stress based on their life events score derived from the Life Events Scale for Students or Social Readjustment Rating Scale, respectively. We measured accuracy and reaction time on a 2-back working memory task to provide: a) Bayes factors and b) Bayesian meta-analysis, which iteratively added each study's effect sizes to evaluate the overall strength of evidence that ageing, cumulative stress and/or the combination of the two detrimentally affect working memory performance. Using a larger sample (N = 156 vs. N = 60) and a more powerful statistical approach, we did not replicate the robust age by cumulative stress interaction effect found by Marshall et al.. Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the survivorship rates of 2-stage treatment with gentamicin-impregnated polymethylmethacrylate articulated knee spacer in patients with chronic periprosthetic joint infection and to identify risk factors associated with failure. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study among 73 patients with chronic periprosthetic joint infection after primary total knee replacement with articulated polymethylmethacrylate gentamicin-impregnated spacers (Subiton, Medical Labs, Ind Argentina), performed in a single institution with a minimum follow-up of 7 years. Clinical and functional assessment was performed with Knee Society Score and Western and Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index. A univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to identify the variables that influenced the success and failure rates. Results: We included 73 patients. There were 53 (71.3%) monomicrobial, 11 (15%) polymicrobial, and 10 (13.7%) negative cultures infections. The success and failure rates were 90.5% (n = 66) and 9.5% (n = 7), respectively. Multivariate analysis identified that age (odds ratio = 1.77; P = .039), greater erythrocyte sedimentation rate values prior to the first stage (odds ratio = 1.04; P = .006), and polymicrobial infections (odds ratio = 7.32; P = .0003) were independent variables associated with failure. Conclusions: Two-stage revision with polymethylmethacrylate gentamicin-impregnated knee spacers is an effective strategy for the treatment of chronic periprosthetic joint infection after total knee arthroplasty. Age, higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate values prior first stage, and polymicrobial infections were independent risk factors for treatment failure.

PURPOSE: This purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of having boys aged 5 to 10 years who will undergo circumcision surgery watch informative videos and listen to therapeutic music on preoperative anxiety, and postoperative anxiety, pain, and nausea and vomiting. DESIGN: This was a prospective and ranomized controlled study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 90 boys aged 5 to 10 years who underwent circumcision surgery. The boys included in the study were randomly divided into 3 groups of 30 using a computer program. The first group (group V) watched the video; the second group (group M) listened to the music, and the third group (group C) was the control group with usual care. Boys and their parents were not blinded to the grouping. FINDINGS: Heart rate.ßvalues were found to be statistically significantly lower compared to the control group at the 1st minute after local anesthesia in group V (P.ß=.ß.029), at the 5th minute after local anesthesia in group M (P.ß=.ß.030), and at the 10th minute after local anesthesia and after the surgery in both group V and group M (P.ß=.ß.001 and P.ß=.ß.010, respectively). Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale.ßscores of the control group measured at the 2nd postoperative hour were found to be significantly higher than those of group V (P.ß=.ß.018). Children's Fear Scale.ßscores of group V measured at the time of admission to the postoperative service were found to be significantly higher than those of group M and group C (P.ß<.ß.001). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of additional analgesic use, nausea and vomiting percentages, and time to discharge. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study revealed that having boys aged 5 to 10 years who will undergo circumcision surgery watch informative videos and listen to therapeutic music did not have any significant effect on their postoperative pain, fear, and anxiety levels. Further large-scale studies, which will also include children who will not undergo circumcision surgery, are needed to generalize this study's results to larger populations.
