RESUMO

Meat products represent an important component of the human diet and are a good source of nutrients. Food-borne microorganisms are the main pathogens that cause human diseases as a result of food consumption, especially products of animal origin. The objective of the present research was to verify the antibacterial activity of the essential oil of Thymus vulgaris against strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus saprophyticus isolated from meat products. For this, the analyses of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were performed in microdilution plates. The association of the product with antimicrobials was also studied using disk diffusion. And the anti-adherent activity, which was determined in the presence of sucrose, in glass tubes. Thyme oil showed a strong inhibitory activity against K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and S. saprophyticus, with the MIC values ranging from 64 to 512 µg/mL, and bactericidal effect for most strains, with MBC values ranging from 256 to 1,024 µg/mL. T. vulgaris oil exhibited varied interactions in association with the antimicrobials, with synergistic (41.67%), indifferent (50%) and antagonistic (8.33%) effects. Regarding the anti-adherent activity, the test product was effective in inhibiting the adherence of all bacterial strains under study. Therefore, thyme oil presents itself as an antibacterial and anti-adherent agent against K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and S. saprophyticus, being a natural product that can represent an interesting alternative in the efforts to combat foodborne diseases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients with an acute confusional state can develop a potentially life-threatening medical emergency when arrested by police. This phenomenon has been named the excited delirium syndrome. Controversy regarding this topic has arisen both in the medical literature and in the civil media. AIM: To provide an overview regarding the pathophysiological, epidemiological and clinical aspects of the excited delirium syndrome, the controversy and the opportunities for prevention of a fatal outcome. METHOD: A systematic review of the literature from 1985 to 2021. RESULTS: We included 103 studies in our review. The excited delirium syndrome occurs predominantly in young, physically healthy men who are under the influence of drugs or a psychiatric illness. Several pathophysiological theories exist: the dopaminergic and catecholaminergic hypotheses and restraint asphyxia. There is controversy both in the medical scientific discourse and in the civil media regarding the existence of this syndrome and the cause of death. There are suggestions that mortality can be decreased by timely recognition, de-escalation and medical treatment. CONCLUSION: The excited delirium syndrome is a medical emergency that can arise during physical arrest of patients with a drugs intoxication or psychiatric illness. Improved collaboration between mental health care professionals and police could prevent fatal outcomes.

RESUMO

Ethanol production has increased over the years, and Brazil ranking second in the world using sugarcane as the main raw material. However, 10-15 L of vinasse are generated per liter of ethanol produced. Besides large volumes, this wastewater has high polluting potential due to its low pH and high concentrations of organic matter and nutrients. Given the high biodegradability of the organic matter, the treatment of this effluent by anaerobic digestion and membrane separation processes results in the generation of high value-added byproducts such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs), biohydrogen and biogas. Membrane bioreactors have been widely evaluated due to the high efficiency achieved in vinasse treatment. In recent years, high retention membrane bioreactors, in which high retention membranes (nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis and membrane distillation) are combined with biological processes, have gained increasing attention. This paper presents a critical review focused on high retention membrane bioreactors and the challenges associated with the proposed configurations. For nanofiltration membrane bioreactor (NF-MBR), the main drawback is the higher fouling propensity due to the hydraulic driving force. Nonetheless, the development of membranes with high permeability and anti-fouling properties is uprising. Regarding osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR), special attention is needed for the selection of a proper draw solution, which desirably should be low cost, have high osmolality, reduce reverse salt flux, and can be easily reconcentrated. Membrane distillation bioreactor (MDBR) also exhibit some shortcomings, with emphasis on energy demand, that can be solved with the use of low-grade and residual heat, or renewable energies. Among the configurations, MDBR seems to be more advantageous for sugarcane vinasse treatment due to the lower energy consumption provided by the use of waste heat from the effluent, and due to the VFAs recovery, which has high added value.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tarenaya spinosa is a medicinal species used for treating respiratory and inflammatory diseases. Various biotechnological studies have been developed for in vitro establishment of plants and long-term conservation of this species. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish a new cryopreservation protocol using the D cryo-plate technique for in vitro-grown shoot tips of T. spinosa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Different steps of the cryopreservation procedure were evaluated in this work: preculture; sucrose concentration of calcium alginate gel; concentration and time of exposure to osmoprotective loading solution; time of exposure to silica gel; and regrowth on recovery medium. RESULTS: The optimal procedure included preculture with increasing sucrose concentration (from 0.25 to 0.50 M), encapsulation and dehydration over silica-gel for 60 min. Increasing sucrose concentration in the loading solution or exposure duration had a negative effect on recovery of cryopreserved shoot tips. However, the association of calcium alginate gel enriched with 0.6 M sucrose with post-rewarming culture with BAP for 2 weeks resulted in the most efficient cryopreservation protocol (76% survival and 70% shoot recovery). CONCLUSION: The plants developed after cryopreservation maintained their in vitro multiplication capacity and demonstrated the efficiency of long-term conservation by D cryo-plate technique for T. spinosa. RESUMO

Microplastics and its putative adverse effects on environmental and human health increasingly gain scientific and public attention. Systematic studies on the effects of microplastics are currently hampered by using rather poorly characterised particles, leading to contradictory results for the same particle type. Here, surface properties and chemical composition of two commercially available nominally identical polystyrene microparticles, frequently used in effect studies, were characterised. We show distinct differences in monomer content, ζ-potentials and surface charge densities. Cells exposed to particles showing a lower ζ-potential and a higher monomer content displayed a higher number of particle-cell-interactions and consequently a decrease in cell metabolism and proliferation, especially at higher particle concentrations. Our study emphasises that no general statements can be made about the effects of microplastics, not even for the same polymer type in the same size class, unless the physicochemical properties are well characterised.

RESUMO

The increase in biofuel production by 2030, driven by the targets set at the 21st United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21), will promote an increase in ethanol production, and consequently more vinasse generation. Sugarcane vinasse, despite having a high polluting potential due to its high concentration of organic matter and nutrients, has the potential to produce value-added resources such as volatile fatty acids (VFA), biohydrogen (bioH2) and biomethane (bioCH4) from anaerobic digestion. The objective of this paper is to present a critical review on the vinasse treatment by anaerobic digestion focusing on the final products. Effects of operational parameters on production and recovery of these resources, such as pH, temperature, retention time and type of inoculum were addressed. Given the importance of treating sugarcane vinasse due to its complex composition and high volume generated in the ethanol production process, this is the first review that evaluates the production of VFAs, bioH2 and bioCH4 in the treatment of this organic residue. Also, the challenges of the simultaneous production of VFA, bioH2 and bioCH4 and resources recovery in the wastewater streams generated in flex-fuel plants, using sugarcane and corn as raw material in ethanol production, are presented. The installation of flex-fuel plants was briefly discussed, with the main impacts on the treatment process of these effluents either jointly or simultaneously, depending on the harvest season.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study sought to evaluate in vitro the effect of a dentifrice containing sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) combined or not with low fluoride (500 ppm NaF) on dentine erosion of intrinsic origin. METHODS: Human root dentine blocks were selected based on surface microhardness and randomly allocated into five groups (n = 12): negative control (0 ppm F; no TMP); F500 (500 ppm NaF); F1500 (1500 ppm NaF-positive control); TMP (1% TMP); and F + TMP (500 ppm NaF + 1% TMP). The blocks were submitted to erosion cycles (3 ×/day) for 3 days (0.01 M HCl, pH 1.5-30 s), treatment (1 min-1:3 p/p dentifrice/distilled water) and remineralization (artificial saliva/120 min). Dentine alterations were determined according to the percentage of microhardness loss (%HL), surface loss (SL) and surface analysis by scanning electron microscopy. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The values of SL and %HL in each group were, respectively: negative control (1.36 ± 0.36; 57.29 ± 14.14), F500 (1.46 ± 0.28; 65.66 ± 5.11), F1500 (1.52 ± 0.36; 61.66 ± 5.15), TMP (1.45 ± 0.45; 62.08 ± 3.83) and F + TMP (1.38 ± 0.42; 63.38 ± 6.47). There was no statistically significant difference in all the parameters (p = 0.873 and p = 0.152). CONCLUSION: The dentifrices containing TMP combined or not with fluoride were not able to prevent dentine erosion.

RESUMO

Magnetic nanocomposites based on maghemite nanoparticles supported (ex situ route) on styrene- divinilbenzene (Sty-DVB) copolymer templates were produced and characterized for their structure and morphology. The as-produced nanocomposites were further chemically-treated with different oxidant agents and surface-coated with stearic acid. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy data show that the incorporated nanoparticles are preserved despite the aggressive chemical treatments employed. From the dynamical susceptibility measurements performed on the nanocomposites, the values of the saturation magnetization (76 emu/g) and the effective magnetic anisotropy (1.7 × 104 J/m³) were obtained, in excellent agreement with the values reported in the literature for maghemite. This finding strongly supports the preservation of the magnetic properties of the supported nanosized maghemite throughout the entire samples' processing.

RESUMO

Species with congruent geographical distributions, potentially caused by common historical and ecological spatial processes, constitute biogeographical units called chorotypes. Nevertheless, the degree of spatial range congruence characterizing these groups of species is rarely used as an explicit parameter. Methods conceived for the identification of patterns of shared ranges often suffer from scale bias associated with the use of grids, or the incapacity to describe the full complexity of patterns, from core areas of high spatial congruence, to long gradients of range distributions expanding from these core areas. Here, we propose a simple analytical method, Spatial Congruence Analysis (SCAN), which identifies chorotypes by mapping direct and indirect spatial relationships among species. Assessments are made under a referential value of congruence as an explicit numerical parameter. A one-layered network connects species (vertices) using pairwise spatial congruence estimates (edges). This network is then analyzed for each species, separately, by an algorithm which searches for spatial relationships to the reference species. The method was applied to two datasets: a simulated gradient of ranges and real distributions of birds. The simulated dataset showed that SCAN can describe gradients of distribution with a high level of detail. The bird dataset showed that only a small portion of range overlaps is biogeographically meaningful, and that there is a large variation in types of patterns that can be found with real distributions. Species analyzed separately may converge on similar or identical groups, may be nested in larger chorotypes, or may even generate overlapped patterns with no species in common. Chorotypes can vary from simple ones, composed by few highly congruent species, to complex, with numerous alternative component species and spatial configurations, which offer insights about possible processes driving these patterns in distinct degrees of spatial congruence. Metrics such as congruence, depth, richness, and ratio between common and total areas can be used to describe chorotypes in detail, allowing comparisons between patterns across regions and taxa.

Wound care remains a challenge in healthcare. This work aimed to develop a new polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chitosan (Ch) based wound dressing able to ensure protection, hydration and a controlled release of antiseptics, as alternative to actual treatments. Two distinct formulations (1:1 and 3:1, w/w) were prepared, sterilized by autoclaving and characterized concerning surface morphology, degradation over the time, mechanical properties and hydrophilicity. Both dressings revealed adequate properties for the intended purpose. The dressings were loaded with chlorhexidine (CHX) and polyhexanide (PHMB) and the drug release profiles were determined using Franz diffusion cells. The release of PHMB was more sustained than CHX, lasting for 2 days. As the amounts of drugs released by PVA/Ch 1:1 were greater, the biological tests were done only with this formulation. The drug loaded dressings revealed antibacterial activity against S. aureus and S. epidermidis, but only the ones loaded with PHMB showed adequate properties in terms of cytotoxicity and irritability. The application of this elastic dressing in the treatment of wounds in a dog led to faster recovery than conventional treatment, suggesting that the material can be a promising alternative in wound care.

RESUMO

Microplastic particles ubiquitously found in the environment are ingested by a huge variety of organisms. Subsequently, microplastic particles can translocate from the gastrointestinal tract into the tissues likely by cellular internalization. The reason for cellular internalization is unknown, since this has only been shown for specifically surface-functionalized particles. We show that environmentally exposed microplastic particles were internalized significantly more often than pristine microplastic particles into macrophages. We identified biomolecules forming an eco-corona on the surface of microplastic particles, suggesting that environmental exposure promotes the cellular internalization of microplastics. Our findings further indicate that cellular internalization is a key route by which microplastic particles translocate into tissues, where they may cause toxicological effects that have implications for the environment and human health.

RESUMO

The effectiveness of rice protein coatings enriched with essential oils on maintaining interior quality of fresh eggs was evaluated during storage at 20°C for 6 wk. Egg quality was assessed by weight loss, Haugh unit (HU), albumen pH, and yolk index (YI) in uncoated eggs (control treatment) and eggs coated with rice protein concentrate at 8% enriched or not with different essential oils (1%): tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), copaíba (Copaifera langsdorffii), or thymo (Thymus vulgaris). The HU and YI were higher in coated eggs (P < 0.001). Data were submitted to variance analysis, and the statistical models included the effects of treatments (coating types), storage periods (weeks), and interaction (treatments by storage periods). Weight loss increased (P < 0.001) during long-term storage. Uncoated eggs showed the highest weight loss (5.43%), whereas coatings of rice protein alone (4.23%) or enriched with tea tree (4.10%), copaíba (3.90%), and thymo (4.08%) solutions were effective in preventing weight lost (P < 0.001). The coating use preserved the internal quality of the eggs for up to 3 wk longer than uncoated eggs in terms of HU, YI, and pH. Uncoated eggs had the worst (P < 0.001) HU (58.46), albumen pH (9.48), and YI (0.33) after 6 wk of storage. In conclusion, the use of coatings based on rice protein concentrate enriched with different essential oils influences the internal quality of eggs during storage and may be an effective alternative for increasing the shelf life of commercial eggs.

RESUMO

Metal-on-metal (MoM) hip arthroplasties produce abundant implant-derived wear debris composed mainly of cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr). Cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) wear particles are difficult to identify histologically and need to be distinguished from other wear particle types and endogenous components (e.g., haemosiderin, fibrin) which may be present in MoM periprosthetic tissues. In this study we sought to determine whether histological stains that have an affinity for metals are useful in identifying Co-Cr wear debris in MoM periprosthetic tissues. Histological sections of periprosthetic tissue from 30 failed MoM hip arthroplasties were stained with haematoxylin-eosin (HE), Solochrome Cyanine (SC), Solochrome Azurine (SA) and Perls' Prussian Blue (PB). Sections of periprosthetic tissue from 10 cases of non-MoM arthroplasties using other implant biomaterials, including titanium, ceramic, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWP) were similarly analysed. Sections of 10 cases of haemosiderin-containing knee tenosynovial giant cell tumour (TSGCT) were also stained with HE, SC, SA and PB. In MoM periprosthetic tissues, SC stained metal debris in phagocytic macrophages and in the superficial necrotic zone which exhibited little or no trichrome staining for fibrin. In non-MoM periprosthetic tissues, UHMWP, PMMA, ceramic and titanium particles were not stained by SC. Prussian Blue, but not SC or SA, stained haemosiderin deposits in MoM periprosthetic tissues and TSGT. Our findings show that SC staining (most likely Cr-associated) is useful in distinguishing Co-Cr wear particles from other metal/non-metal wear particles types in histological preparations of periprosthetic tissue and that SC reliably distinguishes haemosiderin from Co-Cr wear debris.

RESUMO

Although eggs are an excellent protein source, they are a perishable product. Many methods exist to extend shelf life of food and one of them is the use of protein coatings that may be combined with antimicrobial substances, as propolis. The effectiveness of rice protein coatings plus propolis on maintaining interior quality and eggshell breaking strength of fresh eggs was evaluated during storage at 20°C for 6 wk. Egg quality was assessed by weight loss, Haugh unit (HU), albumen pH, yolk index (YI), shell strength, and scanning electron microscopy in uncoated eggs (control treatment) and eggs coated with rice protein concentrate and propolis at 5 or 10%. The HU and YI were higher in coated eggs (P < 0.001). Weight loss increased (P < 0.001) during long-term storage. Uncoated eggs showed the highest weight loss (5.39%), whereas rice protein (4.27%) and rice protein plus propolis at 5% (4.11%) and 10% (4.40%) solutions were effective in preventing weight lost (P < 0.001). Uncoated eggs had the worst (P < 0.001) HU (58.47), albumen pH (9.48), and YI (0.33) after 6 wk of storage. The eggs coated with rice protein and rice protein plus propolis presented results with similar intern quality between them during all the storage period. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated a lower surface porosity in coated eggshell, indicating that the use of the coating may provide a protective barrier against the transfer of gases and moisture. In conclusion rice protein and propolis treatments helped to maintain egg quality for a longer time compared to uncoated eggs. These could be a viable alternative for maintaining the internal quality of fresh eggs during long-term storage at room temperature.

RESUMO

Environmental pollution with plastic waste has gained increasing attention, as the contamination of aquatic habitats poses a challenge to these ecosystems. Plastic waste has direct negative effects on animals such as reduced growth rate, fecundity or life span. However, the indirect effects of plastic waste, which has the ability to sorb chemicals from the surrounding media, on chemical communication have yet to be investigated. Chemical communication is crucial for aquatic organisms, e.g., to avoid predation. The planktonic water flea Daphnia (Crustacea), an important link between trophic levels, relies on info-chemicals (kairomones) to assess its current predation risk and to form inducible defences. We show that plastic waste, composed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) interferes with the formation of inducible defences in Daphnia longicephala when exposed to a combination of kairomones of Notonecta glauca and plastic waste. D. longicephala shows a reduction in all defensive traits, including body length, crest width and time until primiparity, compared to exposure to solely kairomone conditioned media. Plastic waste in the absence of kairomones had no effect on defensive traits. Since it is vital to adjust these defences to the current predation risk, any misperception can have far-reaching ecological consequences. Therefore, plastic waste can have indirect effects on organisms, which may manifest at the community level.

RESUMO

Scientists have long been trying to understand why the Neotropical region holds the highest diversity of birds on Earth. Recently, there has been increased interest in morphological variation between and within species, and in how climate, topography, and anthropogenic pressures may explain and affect phenotypic variation. Because morphological data are not always available for many species at the local or regional scale, we are limited in our understanding of intra- and interspecies spatial morphological variation. Here, we present the ATLANTIC BIRD TRAITS, a data set that includes measurements of up to 44 morphological traits in 67,197 bird records from 2,790 populations distributed throughout the Atlantic forests of South America. This data set comprises information, compiled over two centuries (1820-2018), for 711 bird species, which represent 80% of all known bird diversity in the Atlantic Forest. RESUMO

Primates play an important role in ecosystem functioning and offer critical insights into human evolution, biology, behavior, and emerging infectious diseases. There are 26 primate species in the Atlantic Forests of South America, 19 of them endemic. We compiled a dataset of 5,472 georeferenced locations of 26 native and 1 introduced primate species, as hybrids in the genera Callithrix and Alouatta. The dataset includes 700 primate communities, 8,121 single species occurrences and 714 estimates of primate population sizes, covering most natural forest types of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina and some other biomes. On average, primate communities of the Atlantic Forest harbor 2 ± 1 species (range = 1-6). However, about 40% of primate communities contain only one species. Alouatta guariba (N = 2,188 records) and Sapajus nigritus (N = 1,127) were the species with the most records. Callicebus barbarabrownae (N = 35), Leontopithecus caissara (N = 38), and Sapajus libidinosus (N = 41) were the species with the least records. Recorded primate densities varied from 0.004 individuals/km2 (Alouatta guariba at Fragmento do Bugre, Paraná, Brazil) to 400 individuals/km2 (Alouatta caraya in Santiago, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). Our dataset reflects disparity between the numerous primate census conducted in the Atlantic Forest, in contrast to the scarcity of estimates of population sizes and densities. With these data, researchers can develop different macroecological and regional level studies, focusing on communities, populations, species co-occurrence and distribution patterns. Moreover, the data can also be used to assess the consequences of fragmentation, defaunation, and disease outbreaks on different ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, species invasion or extinction, and community dynamics. There are no copyright restrictions. Please cite this Data Paper when the data are used in publications. We also request that researchers and teachers inform us of how they are using the data.

RESUMO

Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted great attention owing to their applications in the biomedical field. In the present work, maghemite (γFe2O3) NPs of 6.5 nm were prepared using a sonochemical method and used to prepare magnetic beads through silanization with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTS). Subsequently, amino groups in the resulting APTS-γFe2O3 beads were converted to carboxylic acid (CARB-γFe2O3) through the succinic anhydride reaction, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The size of these beads was measured as 12 nm and their hydrodynamic diameter as 490 nm, using TEM analysis and DLS, respectively. The CARB-γFe2O3 beads were further functionalized by immobilizing rabbit antibodies on their surfaces; the immobilization was confirmed by flow cytometry and ionic strength. The samples were further characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy and DC magnetization measurements. Studies on magnetic relaxivities showed that magnetic beads present great potential for application in MR imaging.
