RESUMO

Between 21 November and 22 December 2020, a SARS-CoV-2 community testing pilot took place in the South Wales Valleys. We conducted a case-control study in adults taking part in the pilot using an anonymous online questionnaire. Social, demographic and behavioural factors were compared in people with a positive lateral flow test (cases) and a sample of negatives (controls). A total of 199 cases and 2621 controls completed a questionnaire (response rates: 27.1 and 37.6% respectively). Following adjustment, cases were more likely to work in the hospitality sector (aOR 3.39, 95% CI 1.43-8.03), social care (aOR 2.63, 1.22-5.67) or healthcare (aOR 2.31, 1.29-4.13), live with someone self-isolating due to contact with a case (aOR 3.07, 2.03-4.62), visit a pub (aOR 2.87, 1.11-7.37) and smoke or vape (aOR 1.54, 1.02-2.32). In this community, and at this point in the epidemic, reducing transmission from a household contact who is self-isolating would have the biggest public health impact (population-attributable fraction: 0.2). As restrictions on social mixing are relaxed, hospitality venues will become of greater public health importance, and those working in this sector should be adequately protected. Smoking or vaping may be an important modifiable risk factor.

RESUMO

Bacterial blight (BB) disease reduces the yield of rice varieties and hybrids considerably in many tropical rice growing countries like India. The present study highlights the development of durable BB resistance into the background of an elite maintainer of rice, DRR17B, by incorporating two major dominant genes, Xa21 and Xa33 through marker-assisted backcross breeding (MABB). Through two sets of backcrosses, the two BB resistance genes were transferred separately to DRR17B. In this process, at each stage of backcrossing, foreground selection was carried out for the target resistance genes and for non-fertility restorer alleles concerning the major fertility restorer genes Rf3 and Rf4, using gene-specific PCR-based markers, while background selection was done using a set of 61 and 64 parental polymorphic SSR markers respectively. Backcross derived lines possessing either Xa21 or Xa33 along with maximum genome recovery of DRR17B were identified at BC3F1 generation and selfed to develop BC3F2s. Plants harboring Xa21 or Xa33 in homozygous condition were identified among BC3F2s and were intercrossed with each other to combine both the genes. The intercross F1 plants (ICF1) were selfed and the intercross F2(ICF2) plants possessing both Xa21 and Xa33 in homozygous condition were identified with the help of markers. They were then advanced further by selfing until ICF4 generation. Selected ICF4 lines were evaluated for their resistance against BB with eight virulent isolates and for key agro-morphological traits. Six promising two-gene pyramiding lines of DRR17B with high level of BB resistance and agro-morphological attributes similar or superior to DRR17B with complete maintenance ability have been identified. These lines with elevated level of durable resistance may be handy tool for BB resistance breeding.

RESUMO

A prospective study was carried out during 2010 - 2012 in which a total of 194 patients underwent USG guided FNAC from lesions in deep seated thoracic and abdominal organs. These included liver, lungs, intra-abdominal lymphnodes, gall bladder, ovary and adnexa, pancreas, stomach, omentum, other mass of unknown origin in peritoneal cavity, mediastinum, kidney, colon, small intestine, pleura, appendix and adrenal gland. Of these, FNAC was diagnostic in 168 (86.7%) cases, in 15 (7.7%) cases it was not conclusive. In next 6 (3.1%) it was suspicious of malignancy and the smears were acellular and /or contained blood only in 5 (2.6%) cases. Of all diagnosed cases, 153 (78.9%) cases were malignant, 28 (14.4%) were non-noplastic which included inflammatory, infective and granulomatous lesions and 13 (6.7 %) were benign neoplastic lesions. In liver, metastatic adenocarcinoma was the most common FNAC diagnosis, in lungs non-small cell carcinoma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the overall role of USG guided FNAC in diagnosis of abdominal and thoracic lesions.

RESUMO

A prospective study was carried out from November 2006 - December 2008 in which a total of 304 patients with early pregnancy were examined by ultrasound (US). Of these, 203 (66.8%) cases were normal pregnancies (including 8 cases of twin pregnancy), 32 (10.5%) missed abortions, 19 (6.3%) incomplete abortions, 14 (4.6%) complete abortions, 12 (4.0%) blighted ovums, 11 (3.6%) without sonographic evidence of pregnancy, 7 (2.3%) ectopic pregnancies and 6 (1.9%) molar pregnancies. US in early pregnancy gave a reliable and accurate differentiation between a viable normal pregnancy and an abnormal/pathological pregnancy.
