RESUMO

Previous dating research indicated that the Indonesian island of Sulawesi is host to some of the oldest known rock art1-3. That work was based on solution uranium-series (U-series) analysis of calcite deposits overlying rock art in the limestone caves of Maros-Pangkep, South Sulawesi1-3. Here we use a novel application of this approach-laser-ablation U-series imaging-to re-date some of the earliest cave art in this karst area and to determine the age of stylistically similar motifs at other Maros-Pangkep sites. This method provides enhanced spatial accuracy, resulting in older minimum ages for previously dated art. We show that a hunting scene from Leang Bulu' Sipong 4, which was originally dated using the previous approach to a minimum of 43,900 thousand years ago (ka)3, has a minimum age of 50.2 ± 2.2 ka, and so is at least 4,040 years older than thought. Using the imaging approach, we also assign a minimum age of 53.5 ± 2.3 ka to a newly described cave art scene at Leang Karampuang. Painted at least 51,200 years ago, this narrative composition, which depicts human-like figures interacting with a pig, is now the earliest known surviving example of representational art, and visual storytelling, in the world3. Our findings show that figurative portrayals of anthropomorphic figures and animals have a deeper origin in the history of modern human (Homo sapiens) image-making than recognized to date, as does their representation in composed scenes.

This study investigates the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows and economic growth at sectoral levels in Bangladesh, employing a panel study framework. Utilizing sectoral-level panel data spanning six sectors from 2007-08 to 2018-19, the analysis is conducted using Panel Vector Error Correction Model (Panel VECM). Results from panel unit root tests confirm that all variables are integrated of order one I (1), indicating stationarity. The Pedroni panel co-integration test further supports the presence of co-integration among the variables. Notably, the Panel VECM reveals evidence of a unidirectional causal relationship from Real Gross Domestic Product (RGDP) to Real Foreign Direct Investment (RFDI) across all six sectors of Bangladesh. The findings underscore the significance of formulating pragmatic policies and implementing them effectively to attract FDI across sectors, thereby contributing to the overall economic growth of Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing need for hematologists is not met in many parts of the world. The hematology rotation during internal medicine residency is an opportunity to attract more physicians to the hematology field. This study aimed to assess the impact of a hematology rotation on internal medicine residents' interest in considering a hematology career. METHODS: Internal medicine residents were invited to complete an anonymous questionnaire before and after a mandatory hematology rotation. Their interest in pursuing a hematology career was assessed by asking them to rate "Consider hematology as a career" on a 0 to 10 scale (0 = never, 10 = strongly agree). In addition, viewing the hematology workload as manageable, comfort in dealing with cancer and satisfaction with the hematologist lifestyle were assessed before and after the rotation. RESULTS: Sixty out of 62 IM residents completed the pre- and post-hematology rotation questionnaire (response rate 97%). 80% were in the age range of 25-29 years and 73% were males. Two-thirds were in the senior level (3rd and 4th year) of their residency program and 40% had a prior rotation in a hematology unit. Rating considering hematology as a career increased significantly from a median of 7 (IQR: 5-9) pre-rotation to 8.5 (IQR: 7-10) post-rotation (p = 0.0018). Subgroup analysis showed a significant increase in interest among subgroups except residents > 29 years of age, those with prior hematology rotation and junior residents (1st and 2nd year residency). The change in viewing hematology workload as manageable, comfort in dealing with cancer patients and perceiving the hematologist lifestyle as satisfactory were strongly positively correlated with the change in considering hematology as a career (p = 0.0014, < 0.0001 and < 0.0001; respectively). CONCLUSIONS: A hematology rotation is associated with an increase in the interest of internal medicine residents in considering hematology as a career. Further research is needed to Identify factors that may make hematology rotations an effective tool in attracting residents to the hematology field.

In the context of climate change and the circular economy, biochar has recently found many applications in various sectors as a versatile and recycled material. Here, we review application of biochar-based for carbon sink, covering agronomy, animal farming, anaerobic digestion, composting, environmental remediation, construction, and energy storage. The ultimate storage reservoirs for biochar are soils, civil infrastructure, and landfills. Biochar-based fertilisers, which combine traditional fertilisers with biochar as a nutrient carrier, are promising in agronomy. The use of biochar as a feed additive for animals shows benefits in terms of animal growth, gut microbiota, reduced enteric methane production, egg yield, and endo-toxicant mitigation. Biochar enhances anaerobic digestion operations, primarily for biogas generation and upgrading, performance and sustainability, and the mitigation of inhibitory impurities. In composts, biochar controls the release of greenhouse gases and enhances microbial activity. Co-composted biochar improves soil properties and enhances crop productivity. Pristine and engineered biochar can also be employed for water and soil remediation to remove pollutants. In construction, biochar can be added to cement or asphalt, thus conferring structural and functional advantages. Incorporating biochar in biocomposites improves insulation, electromagnetic radiation protection and moisture control. Finally, synthesising biochar-based materials for energy storage applications requires additional functionalisation.

Extensive prior work has shown that colloidal inorganic nanocrystals coated with organic ligand shells can behave as artificial atoms and, as such, form superlattices with different crystal structures and packing densities. Although ordered superlattices present a high degree of long-range positional order, the relative crystallographic orientation of the inorganic nanocrystals with respect to each other tends to be random. Recent works have shown that superlattices can achieve orientational alignment through combinations of nanocrystal faceting and ligand modification, as well as selective metal particle attachment to particular facets. These studies have focused on the assembly of high-symmetry nanocrystals, such as cubes and cuboctahedra. Here, we study the assembly of elliptically faceted CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals with one distinctive crystallographic orientation along the major elliptical axis. We show that the nanocrystals form an unexpectedly well-ordered translational superlattice, with a degree of order comparable to that achieved with higher-symmetry nanocrystals. Additionally, we show that, due to the particles' faceted shape, the superlattice is characterized by an orientational glass phase in which only certain orientations are possible due to entropically frustrated crystallization. In this phase, the nanocrystals do not exhibit a local orientational ordering but rather have distinct orientations that emerge at different locations within the same domain. The distinct orientations are a result of a facet-to-facet lock-in mechanism that occurs during the self-assembly process. These facet-to-facet alignments force the nanocrystals to tilt on different lattice planes forming different projections that we termed apparent polydispersity. Our experimental realization of an orientational glass phase for multifaceted semiconducting nanocrystals can be used to investigate how this phase is formed and how it can be utilized for potential optical, electrical, and thermal transport applications.

The present study proposes a Gaussian process regression (GPR) approach to develop a model to predict true metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen (TMEn) content of corn samples (as model output) for poultry given levels of feed chemical compositions of crude protein, ether extract, crude fiber, and ash (as model inputs). A 30 corn samples obtained from 5 origins [Brazil (n = 9), China (n = 5), Iran (n = 7), and Ukraine (n = 9)] were assayed to determine chemical composition and TMEn content using chemical analyses and bioassay technique. In addition to GPR model, data were also analyzed by multiple linear regression (MLR) model. Results revealed that corn samples of different origins differ in their gross energy and chemical composition of crude protein, crude fiber, and ash, but no differences were observed for their ether extract and TMEn contents. Based on model evaluation criteria of R2 and root mean square error (RMSE), the GPR model showed satisfactory performance (R2 = 0.92 and RMSE = 33.68 kcal/kg DM) in predicting TMEn and produced relatively better prediction values than those produce by MLR (R2 = 0.23 and RMSE = 104.85 kcal/kg DM). The GPR model may be capable of improving our aptitude and capacity to precisely predict energy contents of feed ingredients to formulate optimal diets for poultry.

The latest advances in colloidal-quantum-dot material processing are combined with a double-sided junction architecture, which is done by efficiently incorporating indium ions in the ZnO eletrode. This platform allows the collection of all photogenerated carriers even at the maximum power point. The increased depletion width in the device facilitates full carrier collection, leading to a record 10.8% power conversion efficiency.

RESUMO

A solution-based passivation scheme is developed featuring the use of molecular iodine and PbS colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). The improved passivation translates into a longer carrier diffusion length in the solid film. This allows thicker solar-cell devices to be built while preserving efficient charge collection, leading to a certified power conversion efficiency of 9.9%, which is a new record in CQD solar cells.

The optoelectronic tunability offered by colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) is attractive for photovoltaic applications but demands proper band alignment at electrodes for efficient charge extraction at minimal cost to voltage. With this goal in mind, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can be used to modify interface energy levels locally. However, to be effective SAMs must be made robust to treatment using the various solvents and ligands required for to fabricate high quality CQD solids. We report robust self-assembled monolayers (R-SAMs) that enable us to increase the efficiency of CQD photovoltaics. Only by developing a process for secure anchoring of aromatic SAMs, aided by deposition of the SAMs in a water-free deposition environment, were we able to provide an interface modification that was robust against the ensuing chemical treatments needed in the fabrication of CQD solids. The energy alignment at the rectifying interface was tailored by tuning the R-SAM for optimal alignment relative to the CQD quantum-confined electron energy levels. This resulted in a CQD PV record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.7% with enhanced reproducibility relative to controls.

Hybrid nanostructures are made by coupling a room temperature coulomb blockade device with photoexcitable nano-rods. Direct electrochemical synthesis on nanoparticle chain arrays leads to the formation of semiconducting rods that are in direct contact with the nanoparticles and also spatial confined by them. This direct interfacing leads to mutual intermodulation between the two systems.

Cdk9 is a key elongation factor for RNA transcription and functions by phosphorylating the C-terminal domain of RNA polymerase II. Here we present direct evidence that cdk9 is important for cancer cell survival and describe the characterization of the potent cdk9 inhibitor CDKI-73 in primary human leukemia cells. CDKI-73 induced caspase-dependent apoptosis that was preceded by dephosphorylation of cdk9 and serine 2 of RNA polymerase II. CDKI-73 was more potent than the pan-cdk inhibitor flavopiridol and showed >200-fold selectivity against primary leukemia cells when compared with normal CD34+ cells. Furthermore, CDKI-73 was equipotent in poor prognostic sub-groups of leukemia patients and showed cytotoxic synergy with the nucleoside analog fludarabine. The Mechanism of synergy was associated with CDKI-73-mediated transcriptional inhibition of MCL1 and XIAP that was maintained when used in combination with fludarabine. Our data present a strong rationale for the development of cdk9 inhibitors such as CDKI-73 as anticancer therapeutics.

A series of 2,4,5-trisubstituted pyrimidines have been synthesised and characterised, which exhibited potent CDK inhibition and anti-proliferative activities. The structure-activity relationship is analysed and a rational for CDK9 selectivity is discussed. Compound 9s, possessing appreciable selectivity for CDK9 over other CDKs, is capable of activating caspase 3, reducing the level of Mcl-1 anti-apoptotic protein, and inducing cancer cell apoptosis.

A series of N-phenyl-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-amines, 4-indazolyl-N-phenylpyrimidin-2-amines and N-phenyl-4-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-pyrimidin-2-amines have been synthesized. Their anti-proliferative activities were tested in HCT-116 human colon carcinoma and MCF-7 breast carcinoma cell lines. Many exhibited potent anti-proliferative and CDK9 inhibitory activities. A lead compound 18b demonstrated the ability to reduce the level of Mcl-1 anti-apoptotic protein, to activate caspase 3/7 and induce cancer cell apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: The development of standardized acute kidney injury (AKI) definitions has allowed for a better understanding of AKI epidemiology, but the long-term renal outcomes of AKI in the pediatric critical care setting have not been well established. This study was designed to: (1) determine the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children 1-3 years after an episode of AKI at a tertiary-care pediatric intensive care unit (ICU), (2) identify the proportion of patients at risk of CKD, and (3) compare ICU admission characteristics in those with and without CKD. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Patients admitted to the British Columbia Children's Hospital pediatric ICU from 2006-2008 with AKI, as defined by AKI Network (AKIN) criteria. Surviving patients, most with short-term recovery from their AKI, were assessed at 1, 2, or 3 years after AKI. PREDICTORS: Severity of AKI as defined by AKIN and several ICU admission characteristics, including demographics, diagnosis, severity of illness, and ventilation data. OUTCOMES & MEASUREMENTS: CKD was defined as the presence of albuminuria and/or glomerular filtration rate (GFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Being at risk of CKD was defined as having a mildly decreased GFR (60-90 mL/min/1.73 m2), hypertension, and/or hyperfiltration (GFR ≥ 150 mL/min/1.73 m2). RESULTS: The proportion of patients with AKI stages 1, 2, and 3 were 44 of 126 (35%), 47 of 126 (37%), and 35 of 126 (28%), respectively. The number of patients with CKD 1-3 years after AKI was 13 of 126 (10.3% overall; 2 of 44 [4.5%] with stage 1, 5 of 47 [10.6%] with stage 2, and 6 of 35 [17.1%] with stage 3; P = 0.2). In addition, 59 of 126 (46.8%) patients were identified as being at risk of CKD. LIMITATIONS: Several patients identified with AKI were lost to follow-up, with the potential of underestimating the incidence of CKD. CONCLUSIONS: In tertiary-care pediatric ICU patients, ∼10% develop CKD 1-3 years after AKI. The burden of CKD in this population may be higher with further follow-up because several patients were identified as being at risk of CKD. Regardless of the severity of AKI, all pediatric ICU patients should be monitored regularly for long-term kidney damage.
