Background: Despite the strict preventive immunization used in Egypt, Newcastle disease remained a prospective risk to the commercial and backyard chicken industries. The severe economic losses caused by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) highlight the importance of the trials for the improvement and development of vaccines and vaccination programs. Aim: In the present study, we evaluated the effectiveness of two vaccination schemes for protection against the velogenic NDV (vNDV) challenge. Methods: Four groups (A-D) of commercial broiler chickens were used. Two groups (G-A and G-B) were vaccinated with priming live HB1 GII simultaneously with inactivated GVII vaccines at 5 days of age, then boosted with live LaSota GII vaccine in group A and live recombinant NDV GVII vaccine in group B on day 16. Groups A to C were challenged with NDV/Chicken/Egypt/ALEX/ZU-NM99/2019 strain (106 Embryo infective dose 50/0.1 ml) at 28 days of age. Results: Two vaccination schemes achieved 93.3% clinical protection against NDV with body gain enhancement; whereas, 80% of the unvaccinated-challenged birds died. On day 28, the mean HI antibody titers were 4.3 ± 0.33 and 5.3 ± 0.33 log2 in groups A and B, respectively. As well as both programs remarkably reduced virus shedding. The two vaccination schemes displayed close protection efficacy against the vNDV challenge. Conclusion: Therefore, using the combination of a live attenuated vaccine with an inactivated genetically matched strain vaccine and then boosting it with one of the available live vaccines could be considered one of the most effective programs against current field vNDV infection in Egypt.

Key Clinical Message: Atypical presentations of eumycetoma can pose a challenge in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Healthcare providers thorough in their differential diagnosis and investigations, even in the absence of classic symptoms, in order to improve early detection and the case management for such a neglected tropical disease. Abstract: In this communication, we present a case study of an unusual presentation of eumycetoma; a fungal infection that is considered a neglected tropical disease. The patient, a 28-year-old male from Sudan, presented with a recurrent mass in the abdominal wall. Despite two surgeries to remove the mass, it continued to recur. Unlike typical cases of eumycetoma, this patient did not exhibit common symptoms such as painless swelling, sinuses, or grain-containing discharge. The diagnosis was made incidentally after surgical excision of the mass. The abstract highlights the importance of recognizing uncommon presentations and maintaining a high suspicion for rare diagnoses, even in the absence of classic symptoms. Further research is needed to better understand atypical presentations of eumycetoma and improve early detection.

Abstract: Mycetoma is a chronic and debilitating infectious disease characterized by localized swellings and granulomatous lesions. It primarily affects individuals in tropical and subtropical regions and is caused by certain fungi or bacteria. While mycetoma typically presents with sinuses and discharge, this case report presents a unique cystic presentation without these features. The patient, a 12-year-old female from Sudan, presented with a painless swelling on the dorsum of her right foot. Physical examination revealed a round, non-tender, and fluctuant mass. Histopathological examination confirmed actinomycetoma caused by Streptomyces somaliensis. The patient was successfully treated with a combination of antibiotherapy. This atypical presentation underscores the need for healthcare professionals to consider uncommon variations of mycetoma for accurate diagnosis and management.

BACKGROUND: Gingivitis is a reversible condition; however, if left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis, which a serious infection that leads to bone destruction. Soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) measurement may be of value in the early assessment of gingivitis in children, thereby minimizing risk of tooth loss. OBJECTIVES: In this observational study, we assessed salivary and serum concentrations of suPAR for the diagnosis of gingivitis and correlation of salivary suPAR with the periodontal clinical parameters. METHODS: Ninety children participated in the study, with 20 healthy subjects as controls and 70 patients with gingivitis. The gingivitis group was divided into mild, moderate, and severe cases. According to the gingival index (GI), salivary and serum samples were analyzed for the suPAR and C-reactive protein levels using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: The salivary suPAR was significantly higher in patients with gingivitis (10.8 ± 2.9 ng/mL) than in the control group (7.0 ± 1.1 ng/mL) as P < 0.001. SuPAR was correlated with gingivitis severity. It was 7.7 ± 1.5 1 ng/mL in mild cases, 10.9 ± 1.2 ng/mL in moderate cases, and 14.4 ± 0.9 ng/mL in severe cases. The difference was significantly high (P < 0.001) between the groups; however, the difference between the mild cases and the control was nonsignificant as P < 0.066. The salivary suPAR was correlated with periodontal clinical parameters, which included GI and simple oral hygiene index (SOHI). Conversely the serum suPAR was not correlated with the salivary suPAR or the periodontal clinical parameters. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study demonstrated that the salivary suPAR is increased in proportionate with the degree of severity of gingivitis in children. Moreover, salivary suPAR was correlated with the periodontal clinical parameters.

This study aims to investigate the effect of magnesium (Mg) doping on the characteristics and antibacterial properties of copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs). The Mg-doped CuO NPs were fabricated by the co-precipitation method. NPs were characterized by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Photoluminescence (PL). Broth microdilution, agar-well diffusion, and time-kill assays were employed to assess the antibacterial activity of the NPs. XRD revealed the monoclinic structure of CuO NPs and the successful incorporation of Mg dopant to the Cu1-xMgxO NPs. TEM revealed the spherical shape of the CuO NPs. Mg doping affected the morphology of NPs and decreased their agglomeration. EDX patterns confirmed the high purity of the undoped and Mg-doped CuO NPs. FTIR analysis revealed the shifts in the Cu-O bond induced by the Mg dopant. The position, width, and intensity of the PL bands were affected as a result of Mg doping, which is an indication of vacancies. Both undoped and doped CuO NPs exhibited significant antibacterial capacities. NPs inhibited the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. These results highlight the potential use of Mg-doped CuO NPs as an antibacterial agent.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a rare congenital condition characterized by complex overgrowth of different body parts. Children with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, particularly those with hemihypertrophy, experience an increased risk of developing benign and malignant tumors. This case report presents an 18-month-old girl with features suggestive of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome who developed pubic hair, high levels of testosterone, and DHEAS with normal cortisol and progesterone levels. Computed tomography revealed a left adrenal mass. Histopathological examination of the resected mass showed an adrenocortical tumor. Her postoperative evaluation showed normal testosterone and DHEAS levels. Early diagnosis and detection of intra-abdominal neoplasms in infants with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome are essential to avoid serious clinical complications.
