Correlation between mothers' perceptions/expectations and the behavior of children with HIV during dental treatment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mothers' perceptions and expectations of the behavior of their children who were HIV positive, during dental treatment. The sample was composed of 40 mother and child pairs. The mothers answered seven questions during two different appointments (M1, the child's initial appointment, and M2, the child's treatment appointment) in order to identify their perceptions and expectations about their children's behavior during dental treatment. In addition, child's behavior during the appointments was evaluated. The results of the mothers' interviews were then correlated with their children's behavior using Spearman's correlation test (p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between the mothers' perceptions and expectations and the behavior displayed by their children during dental treatment (p>0.05).

Parasymphyseal fracture associated with fracture of a maxillary primary molar in a child: case report.

Bone and posterior tooth fractures can be serious injuries that are difficult to diagnose, particularly in emergencies. The aim of this study was to report a case of a parasymphyseal fracture associated with the fracture of a maxillary primary molar in a child.

Strategies for addressing restorative challenges in HIV-infected children.

The complete caries removal of deep/extensive dentin carious lesions with conventional procedures (high- and low-speed bur) may increase the risk of pulp exposure. In children with systemic diseases, such as HIV-infected children, the dental treatment proposed for the primary dentition with pulp involvement is tooth extraction once endodontic therapies cannot be guaranteed successfully. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe 3 cases of alternative techniques for caries removal in extensive and/or deep dentin carious lesions in the primary dentition of HIV-infected children: (1) atraumatic restorative treatment (ART); (2) Carisolv; and (3) Papacarie.

Ansiedade materna e comportamento infantil durante o atendimento odontológico / Maternal anxiety and children's behavior during dental visits

Avaliou-se a correlação entre ansiedade materna e comportamento infantil frente ao atendimento odontológico em crianças com experiência médico- hospitalar pregressa. Antes da consulta de exame clínico (M1) e de tratamento (M2) das crianças, as mães responderam a uma questão sobre sua ansiedade em relação ao atendimento odontológico dos filhos. Realizou-se a avaliação do comportamento infantil durante as consultas odontológicas (M1 e M2). Verificou-se que as crianças foram cooperadoras, não tendo havido uma correlação positiva entre a ansiedade materna e o comportamento infantil (p>0,05). Concluiu-se que a ansiedade materna não interferiu negativamente no comportamento durante o atendimento das crianças com experiência médico-hospitalar pregressa.

Free sugar concentration and pH of paediatric medicines in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine free sugar concentration and pH of paediatric syrup medicines. Setting Ten paediatric syrup medicines most frequently prescribed in urban centres in Brazil were randomly chosen to be tested. OUTCOME MEASURES: Three different bottles from each type of syrup medicine were analysed (n = 30). Analysis of free sugars was performed using normal phase High-Performance Liquid Cromatography (HPLC). Quantification of free sugars was achieved by peak height comparison with standards of sucrose, fructose, glucose and sorbitol (Merck). The results were average of replicates from three bottles of each medicine. The pH of the three different bottles of each medicine was determined using a digital pHmeter (Analion - PM 600). RESULTS: Sucrose and glucose were detected in seven of the ten types of paediatric syrup medicines, with concentrations varying from 3.7 to 49.4% (w/w) (Median 32.7%) and 2.1 to 23.2% (w/w) (Median = 6.1%), respectively. Only two medicines contained fructose, and three, sorbitol, with respective medians of 12.8% (3.1-22.4%) and 24.6% (22.8-27.4%). The median of pH values was 4.9 (2.6-6.1). CONCLUSIONS: Most paediatric syrup medicines showed high concentration of free sugars and pH below the critical value (5.5), which can increase their cariogenic and erosive potentials.

O ceod do CPOD médios das crianças de 5, 12 e 14 anos encontrados foram de 3.6, 1.7 e 2.5, respectivamente. Na análise da composiçäo dos índices os dados sugerem que escolares com dentiçäo decídua têm menor acesso à assistência odontológica.
