RESUMO

Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a class of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), are highly stable and ubiquitous molecules that exhibit tissue-specific expression. Accumulating evidence has shown that aberrant expression of circRNAs can play a role in the pathogenesis of several diseases. Rheumatic diseases are a varied group of autoimmune and inflammatory disorders affecting mainly the musculoskeletal system. Notably, circRNAs, which are essential immune system gene modulators, are strongly linked to the occurrence and progression of autoimmune disorders. Here, we present and discuss the current findings concerning the roles, implications and theragnostic potentials of circRNAs in common rheumatic diseases, including ankylosing spondylitis (AS), osteoarthritis (OA), osteoporosis (OP), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Crohn's disease (CD), and gout. This review aims to provide new insights to support the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for these disabling diseases.

Over the past decade, the scientific committee has called for broadening our horizons in understanding host-microbe interactions and infectious disease progression. Owing to the fact that the human gut harbors trillions of microbes that exhibit various roles including the production of vitamins, absorption of nutrients, pathogen displacement, and development of the host immune system, particular attention has been given to the use of germ-free (GF) animal models in unraveling the effect of the gut microbiota on the physiology and pathophysiology of the host. In this review, we discuss common methods used to generate GF fruit fly, zebrafish, and mice model systems and highlight the use of these GF model organisms in addressing the role of gut-microbiota in gut-related disorders (metabolic diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer), and in activating host defense mechanisms and amending pathogenic virulence.

This study presents the taxonomic description of two new sponge species that are intimately associated with the hyperarid mangrove ecosystem of Qatar. The study includes a preliminary evaluation of the sponges' potential bioactivity against pathogens. Chalinula qatari sp. nov. is a fragile thinly encrusting sponge with a vivid maroon colour in life, often with oscular chimneys and commonly recorded on pneumatophores in the intertidal and shallow subtidal zone. Suberites luna sp. nov. is a massive globular-lobate sponge with a greenish-black colour externally and a yellowish orange colour internally, recorded on pneumatophores in the shallow subtidal zone, with large specimens near the seagrass ecosystem that surrounds the mangrove. For both species, a drug extraction protocol and an antibacterial experiment was performed. The extract of Suberites luna sp. nov. was found to be bioactive against recognized pathogens such as Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis, but no bioactive activity was recorded for Chalinula qatari sp. nov. This study highlights the importance of increasing bioprospecting effort in hyperarid conditions and the importance of combining bioprospecting with taxonomic studies for the identification of novel marine drugs.
