RESUMO

The accumulation of anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere causes global warming. Global efforts are carried out to prevent temperature overshooting and limit the increase in the Earth's surface temperature to 1.5 °C. Carbon dioxide and methane are the largest contributors to global warming. We have synthesized copper-aluminium layered double hydroxide (Cu-Al LDH) catalysts by urea hydrolysis under microwave (MW) irradiation. The effect of MW power, urea concentration, and MII/MIII ratios was studied. The physicochemical properties of the prepared LDH catalysts were characterized by several analysis techniques. The results confirmed the formation of the layered structure with the intercalation of urea-derived anions. The urea-derived anions enhanced the optical and photocatalytic properties of the nano Cu-Al LDH in the visible-light region. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared Cu-Al LDH catalysts was tested for greenhouse gas conversion (CH4, CO2, and H2O) under visible light. The dynamic gas mixture flow can pass through the reactor at room temperature under atmospheric pressure. The results show a high conversion percentage for both CO2 and CH4. The highest converted amounts were 7.48 and 1.02 mmol mL-1 g-1 for CH4 and CO2, respectively, under the reaction conditions. The main product was formaldehyde with high selectivity (>99%). The results also show the stability of the catalysts over several cycles. The current work represents a green chemistry approach for efficient photocatalyst synthesis, visible light utilization, and GHGs' conversion into a valuable product.

RESUMO

Depression and anxiety are highly prevalent among diabetics and may reduce their quality of life. However, data is limited on the prevalence of depression and anxiety among Egyptian diabetics. Therefore, we aimed to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression and their association with different demographics and comorbidities among Egyptian diabetics. This multicentric cross-sectional study included 679 patients with diabetes in Fayoum, Egypt. We assessed the prevalence of depression and anxiety using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and collected socio-demographic characteristics with other relevant clinical variables. We used descriptive statistics to describe demographic characteristics and frequency of depression and anxiety. We applied logistic regression to measure the association between the different covariates and depression/anxiety. Of 679 diabetic patients, 65.4% were females, and 54.1% were above 50 years old. The median (IQR) age was 52 [43, 60]. Overall, 34.2% had depression, and 38% had anxiety. The results of multiple logistic regression suggested that age (odds ratio [OR] = 2.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.54, 3.41]), neuropathy (OR = 2.25, 95% CI [1.38, 3.70]), sexual dysfunction (OR = 2.24, 95% CI [1.02, 4.96]), the presence of coma or spasm (OR = 2.82, 95% CI [1.44, 5.72]), and anxiety (OR = 3.15, 95% CI [2.21, 4.52]) were associated with increased risk of depression among diabetics. For anxiety, only the presence of depression was strongly associated with an increased risk of anxiety (OR = 2.99, 95% CI [2.12, 4.24]). Over one-third of Egyptian diabetics had depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety may be associated with poor clinical outcomes in diabetics.

RESUMO

Introduction:There is a variation in drug response among patients who practice intermittent fasting. Alteration in the expression of drug-metabolizing enzymes (DMEs) can affect the pharmacokinetics and drug response.Aims: This research aimed to determine the effect of intermittent fasting on the mRNA expression of major drug-metabolizing cyp450s in the liver of diabetic mice. Methods: Thirty-two male Balb/c mice were divided into four groups; control, nonfasting diabetic, non-diabetic fasting, and diabetic fasting mice. Insulin-dependent diabetes was induced in mice by a single high-dose (250 mg/kg) streptozocin. Mice of non-diabetic and diabetic fasting groups were subjected to 10-day intermittent fasting for 17 hours daily. Then, the mRNA expression of mouse phase I DMEs cyp1a1, cyp2c29, cyp2d9, and cyp3a11 was analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction. In addition, the liver of mice in all groups was examined for pathohistological alterations. Results: Diabetes downregulated the mRNA expression of hepatic drug-metabolizing cyp450s in diabetic mice, while intermittent fasting significantly (P < 0.05) increased it. Also, cyp2d9 and cyp3a11 were upregulated in the liver of diabetic fasting mice. These alterations in the gene expression were correlated with the pathohistological alterations, where livers of diabetic mice showed dilatation in the blood sinusoids and inflammatory cells leukocyte infiltrations. Whereas livers of diabetic fasting mice showed almost comparable histological findings to control mice. Conclusions: Intermittent fasting can protect the liver against diabetes-induced hepatotoxicity and the down-regulation of DME genes in the diabetic liver. These results can explain, at least partly, the inter-individual variation in the drug response during practicing fasting.

RESUMO

Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and evaluate risk factors of hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) to platinum-based compounds (PBCs) in cancer patients. PBCs play an important role in cancer therapy. However, one of the drawbacks of PBCs is the occasional occurrence of HSRs, which can lead to serious consequences. Methods: This retrospective case control study was conducted from January 2013 to December 2020 at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman and included patients who received any PBC for the management of non-haematological cancers. Data regarding demographic characteristics and diseases and treatment details were collected from the hospital's electronic database. The data were quantitatively described and Student's t-test and Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney tests were used to detect significant differences. Results: A total of 38 cases and 148 matched controls were studied. The prevalence of HSRs to PBCs in the cohort of this study was 4.7% (95% confidence interval: 3.33-6.37%), higher with carboplatin compared with cisplatin and oxaliplatin. The female gender (P = 0.032), concomitant taxanes (P = 0.002) and concurrent radiation (P <0.001) were significant predictors of HSRs to PBCs. The majority of the reactions were of mild to moderate severity, and the rechallenge rate after HSR development was 13%. Conclusion: HSRs to PBCs impact therapy decisions and understanding the risk factors is important to improve treatment outcomes in cancer patients.

RESUMO

Background: Previous studies documented a narrow scope of knowledge about the negative mental health status during the lockdown following the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in Arab countries. Aim: We aimed to assess the association between negative mental health status and the COVID-19 pandemic and determine the different factors affecting mental health among the general population of seven Arab countries. Methods: This study is a multinational cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey conducted online from June 11, 2020 to June 25, 2020. The depression, anxiety, and stress Scale 21 Items (DASS-21) and the Event scale-Revised Arabic version (IES-R-13) scales were used. Multiple linear regressions were performed to study the association between the scales' total scores with COVID-19 and demographic characteristics. Results: A total of 28,843 participants from seven Arab countries were included. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of mental health disorders has significantly increased. A total of 19006 participants (66%) were affected by variable degrees of depression, 13,688 (47%) had anxiety, and 14,374 (50%) had stress ranging from mild to severe. Higher levels were associated with other factors, such as lower age, female gender, chronic disease, unemployed, fear of getting infected, and a history of psychiatric disorders. Conclusion: Our study findings show an increased incidence of mental disorders during the pandemic. This is expected to play a crucial role in guiding a psychological support strategy provided by healthcare systems to the general public during pandemics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Energy is the basis and assurance for a world's stable development; however, as traditional non-renewable energy sources deplete, the development and study of renewable clean energy have emerged. Using microalgae as a carbon source for anaerobic bacteria to generate biohydrogen is a clean energy generation system that both local and global peers see as promising. RESULTS: Klebsiella pneumonia, Enterobacter cloacae, and their coculture were used to synthesize biohydrogen using Oscillatoria acuminata biomass via dark fermentation. The total carbohydrate content in O. acuminata was 237.39 mg/L. To enhance the content of fermentable reducing sugars, thermochemical, biological, and biological with magnesium zinc ferrite nanoparticles (Mg-Zn Fe2O4-NPs) pretreatments were applied. Crude hydrolytic enzymes extracted from Trichoderma harzianum of biological pretreatment were enhanced by Mg-Zn Fe2O4-NPs and significantly increased reducing sugars (230.48 mg/g) four times than thermochemical pretreatment (45.34 mg/g). K. pneumonia demonstrated a greater accumulated hydrogen level (1022 mLH2/L) than E. cloacae (813 mLH2/L), while their coculture showed superior results (1520 mLH2/L) and shortened the production time to 48 h instead of 72 h in single culture pretreatments. Biological pretreatment + Mg-Zn Fe2O4 NPs using coculture significantly stimulated hydrogen yield (3254 mLH2/L), hydrogen efficiency)216.9 mL H2/g reducing sugar( and hydrogen production rate (67.7 mL/L/h) to the maximum among all pretreatments. CONCLUSION: These results confirm the effectiveness of biological treatments + Mg-Zn Fe2O4-NPs and coculture dark fermentation in upregulating biohydrogen production.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of sesame oil therapy in reduction of dentin hypersensitivity, as compared to desensitizing dentifrice. Design, setting, participants. We conducted a single blinded randomized controlled trial in 100 patients reported to Diagnostic Department of King Khalid University-College of Dentistry between March 2018 and December 2019. Interventions. Patients were given desensitizing tooth paste or sesame oil to apply for the specified time. Main outcome measures. A Visual Analogue Scale was used to record sensitivity scores for controlled air stimulus and tactile method at the first visit and after 8th week of treatment. Measured outcome was reduction in dentinal hypersensitivity. RESULTS: Hypersensitivity degree before treatment in case of desensitizing tooth paste was 6.90 ± 1.04, and posttreatment showed a score of 4.70 ± 1.37. In case of sesame oil groups, subjects included had a score of 7.14 ± 0.90 which showed a drop to a score of 4.52 ± 1.16. CONCLUSIONS: Desensitizing tooth paste showed 30.5% reduction in sensitivity, whereas sesame oil application showed 36.2% reduction. The belief of considering oil therapy in oral health is just a placebo effect and may not be considered anymore. Efficacy can be established with many more studies including long follow-up and varying time periods.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Bone Marrow Transplant (FACT-BMT) has been translated from English into several languages. Currently, there is no validated translation of FACT-BMT in Arabic. Here, we are reporting the first Arabic translation and validation of the FACT-BMT. METHODS: The study was approved by the Institutional Research Advisory Council. The Arabic translation followed the standard Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT.org) translation methodology (with permission). Arabic FACT-BMT (50- items) was statistically validated. Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency, Spearman's rank correlation coefficients method for Inter-scale correlations and Principal Component Analysis for factorial construct validity was used. RESULTS: One hundred and eight consecutive relapsed /refractory lymphoma patients who underwent high dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplant were enrolled. There were 68 males (63%) and 40 females (37%) with a median age of 29 years (range 14-62). After Arabic questionnaire pre-testing (Cronbach's alpha 0.744), the study included 108 patients. Cronbach's alpha for the entire FACT-BMT indicated an excellent internal consistency (0.90); range (0.67 to 0.91). Cronbach's alpha for sub-groups of social (0.78), emotional (0.67) and functional wellbeing was (0.88). Cronbach's alpha for bone marrow transplant (0.81), FACT-General (0.89), and FACT- Trial Outcome Index (TOI); (0.91) also revealed excellent internal consistency. Patients had high scores in all domains of quality of life, indicating that most patients were leading a normal life. This translation of FACT-BMT in Arabic was reviewed and approved for submission by the FACIT.org. CONCLUSIONS: Our data reports the first translated, validated and approved Arabic version of FACT-BMT. This will help large numbers of Arabic speaking patients undergoing stem cell/bone marrow transplantation, across the globe.

RESUMO

People with multiple sclerosis (MS) face difficulties in performing daily occupations. The objectives of this study were to assess the performance of and level of satisfaction with daily occupations among people with MS, and to explore factors associated with their performance and satisfaction. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 MS individuals. The Arabic version of Satisfaction With Daily Occupations (SDO) scale was used. Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression were used for data analysis. SDO performance and satisfaction median scores were 10/14 and 51/70, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that unemployment and cognitive symptoms were associated with poor occupational performance. Furthermore, unemployment, being married, visual problems, and low endurance were significant correlates of poor satisfaction with performing daily occupations. Social and clinical factors contributed to dissatisfaction with the poor performance of daily occupations among people with MS. Intervention studies are needed to investigate the role of occupational therapy in improving the performance of daily occupations in people with MS.

RESUMO

The main objective of this paper was to assess the level and the determinants of quality of life (QOL) amongst patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). A cross-sectional study was conducted among a convenience sample of 200 adult MS patients. Inclusion criteria were: MS diagnosis for at least one year, and aged 21+ years. However, exclusion criteria were: having other neurological diseases, serious cardiovascular, orthopedic or other disability precluding participation. Self-administered questionnaire employed MSQOL-54 with two outcomes: Physical Health Composite (PHC) and mental health composite (MHC). Satisfaction with Daily Occupation scale was adopted through face to face interviews. The median of PHC and MHC scores were 48.9/100, and 53.4/100 respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that unemployment was a determinant of poor PHC, while low monthly income was a predictor of poor MHC. Additionally, low endurance and sensory problems were associated with poor PHC, and MHC, while motor problems were allied with only poor PHC. Patient's satisfaction level with performing activities of daily living was positively associated with PHC and MHC. Assessment of QOL is suggested to be comprised in medical settings.
