Stingless bee honey's nutritional value is gaining attention, but the impact of harvesting seasons, specifically the rainy (September 2018) and dry (February 2019) seasons in Malaysia on the honey's physicochemical properties and volatile compounds remains insufficiently explored. This research revealed marginal differences in the physicochemical properties between seasons. However, through individual bee species and cumulative data analysis, honey samples were effectively differentiated based on harvesting seasons. A set of seventeen volatile compounds were identified as potential chemical markers for distinguishing H. bakeri, G. thoracica, and T. binghami honey between rainy and dry seasons. For cumulative data, four significant markers were proposed. These discrimination methods and chemical markers can serve as valuable references in distinguishing stingless bee honey, whether its entomological origin is specified or not between rainy and dry seasons.

The occurrence of floods has the potential to escalate the transmission of infectious diseases. To enhance our comprehension of the health impacts of flooding and facilitate effective planning for mitigation strategies, it is necessary to explore the flood risk management. The variability present in hydrological records is an important and neglecting non-stationary patterns in flood data can lead to significant biases in estimating flood quantiles. Consequently, adopting a non-stationary flood frequency analysis appears to be a suitable approach to challenge the assumption of independent and identically distributed observations in the sample. This research employed the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution to examine annual maximum flood series. To estimate non-stationary models in the flood data, several statistical tests, including the TL-moment method was utilized on the data from ten stream-flow stations in Johor, Malaysia, which revealed that two stations, namely Kahang and Lenggor, exhibited non-stationary behaviour in their annual maximum streamflow. Two non-stationary models efficiently described the data series from these two specific stations, the control of which could reduce outbreak of infectious diseases when used for controlling the development measures of the hydraulic structures. Thus, the application of these models may help prevent biased prediction of flood occurrences leading to lower number of cases infected by disease.

Machine learning has been very promising in solving real problems, but the implementation involved difficulties mainly for the inexpert data scientists. Therefore, this paper presents an automated machine learning (AutoML) to simplify and accelerate the modeling tasks. Focused on Python and RapidMiner rapid modeling tools, Tree-based Pipeline Optimization Tool (TPOT) and AutoModel were used. This paper presents a comprehensive comparison between these tools with regard to the prediction accuracy and Area Under Curve (AUC) in classifying real cases of whistleblowing academic dishonesty among undergraduate students of two universities in Indonesia. Additionally, the correlations weight from demographic and Theory of Planned Behavior (TOB) attributes in the different machine learning models are also discussed. All the machine learning algorithms from TPOT and AutoModel are considerable powerful to generate good accuracy level (between 70-93% of AUC) in classifying both cases of whistleblowing and non-whistleblowing on the hold-out samples from the testing process. Generally, based on the validation results of the prediction models, demographic attributes presented more importance than the TBP attributes. The findings of this study will be a great interest of many research scholars to conduct a more in-depth analysis on AutoML for many domains mainly in education and academic misconduct fields.•AutoML is the first of its kind to be empirically compared between TPOT and AutoModel in an application to predict academic dishonesty whistleblowing.•Besides accuracy performances of the AutoML, the proportion of the variance of each attribute from demographic and Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is also presented in the prediction models of academic dishonesty whistleblowing.•AutoML is a convenient and reproducible rapid modeling method of machine learning to be used in many kinds of prediction problem.

Urea is naturally present in milk, yet urea is added intentionally to increase milk's nitrogen content and shelf life. In this study, a total of 50 Ultra heat treatment (UHT) milk samples were spiked with known urea concentrations (0-5 w/v%). Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy with principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis (DA), and multiple linear regression (MLR) were used for the discrimination and quantification of urea. The PCA was built using 387 variables with higher FL > 0.75 from the first PCA with cumulative variability (90.036%). Subsequently, the DA model was built using the same variables from PCA and demonstrated the good distinction between unadulterated and adulterated milk, with a correct classification rate of 98% for cross-validation. The MLR model used 48 variables with p-value < 0.05 from the DA model and gave R2 values greater than 0.90, with RMSE and MSE below 1 for cross-validation and prediction. The DA and MLR models were then validated externally using a test dataset, which shows 100% correct classification, and the t-test result (p > 0.05) indicated that the MLR could determine the percentage of urea in UHT milk within the permission limit (70 mg/mL). In short, the wavenumbers 1626.63, 1601.98, and 1585.5534 cm-1 are suitable as fingerprint regions for detecting urea in UHT milk.

Plastic pollution is an emerging environmental concern in recent years due to continuous mass production and its slow degradation. Microplastics measuring between 5 mm and 1 µm are being ingested by marine animals and eventually by human consumption in form of seafood. The aim of this research was to evaluate microplastics isolated from sea cucumber Acaudina molpadioides in Pulau Langkawi. A total of 20 animals were collected and their gastrointestinal tract were digested using NaOH. Microplastics were isolated, filtered and identified through microscopic examination based on the colour, shape and size. The chemical composition of microplastics were further analyzed by FTIR to identify the functional group of polymers. A total of 1652 microplastics were found in A. molpadioides. Fibres (99.4%) and black color (54.4%) were the majority of microplastics observed in terms of shapes and colors. The size range within 0.5-1 µm and 1-2 µm were the highest abundance observed. There were two identified polymer types of microplastics obtained through FTIR which were polyethylene (PE) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). In conclusion, microplastics were isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of A. molpadioides indicating that the animals were contaminated. Further research can be done on the toxicity effects of these microplastics towards human upon consumption of these animals as seafood.

Mediastinal germ cell tumours are a rare group of extragonadal germ cell tumours with less than 5% prevalence of all germ cell tumours. Primary mediastinal germ cell tumours themselves account for 16-36% of the extragonadal germ cell tumours. Along the spectrum of osteosarcoma, parosteal osteosarcoma is a well-differentiated surface osteosarcoma with a prevalence of 4% of all osteosarcoma. As such synchronous primary parosteal osteosarcoma and primary mediastinal germ cell tumour are exceedingly rare. This leads to complexity in determining the most appropriate chemotherapy for two different types of tumours and its potential side effects of reduced immunity leading to potential secondary infection. Here we report a case of a 16-year-old boy who presented with synchronous primary osteosarcoma and primary mediastinal germ cell tumour, complicated with atypical mycobacterial infection post-operatively. Additionally, we discuss our choice of chemotherapy and the management of the atypical mycobacterial infection.

BACKGROUND: The employment of Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy combined with chemometrics for determination and quantification of lard in a binary blend with palm oil in a cosmetic soap formulations. OBJECTIVE: To determine and quantify lard as an adulterant in a binary blend with palm oil in a cosmetic soap formulations by FT-IR and multivariate analysis. METHODS: Fatty acids in lard, palm oil and binary blends were extracted via liquid-liquid extraction and were subjected to FTIR spectrometry, combined with principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant analysis (DA) for the classification of lard in cosmetic soap formulations via two DA models: Model A (percentage of lard in cosmetic soap) and Model B (porcine and non-porcine cosmetic soap). Linear regression (MLR), partial least square regression (PLS-R) and principal components regression (PCR) were used to assess the degree of adulteration of lard in the cosmetic soap. FINDINGS: The FTIR spectrum of palm oil slightly differed from that of lard at the wavenumber range of 1453 cm -1 and 1415 cm -1 in palm oil and lard, respectively, indicating the bending vibrations of CH2 and CH3 aliphatic groups and OH carboxyl group respectively. Both of the DA models could accurately classify 100% of cosmetic soap formulations. Nevertheless, less than 100% of verification value was obtained when it was further used to predict the unknown cosmetic soap sample suspected of containing lard or a different percentage of lard. The PCA for Model A and Model B explained a similar cumulative variability (CV) of 92.86% for the whole dataset. MLR and PCR showed the highest determination coefficient (R2) of 0.996, and the lowest relative standard error (RSE) and mean square error (MSE), indicating that both regression models were effective in quantifying the lard adulterant in cosmetic soap. CONCLUSION: FTIR spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics with DA, PCA and MLR or PCR can be used to analyse the presence of lard and quantify its percentage in cosmetic soap formulations.


CONTEXTE: Combinée à la chimiométrie, la spectroscopie infrarouge à transformée de Fourier (SI-TF) permet de déterminer et de quantifier la présence du saindoux dans un mélange binaire avec de l'huile de palme parmi des formulations de savon cosmétique. OBJECTIF: Déterminer et quantifier le saindoux comme adultérant dans un mélange binaire avec de l'huile de palme parmi des formulations de savon cosmétique par SI-TF et analyse multivariée. MÉTHODES: Les acides gras dans le saindoux, l'huile de palme et les mélanges binaires ont été extraits par extraction liquide-liquide, puis ont été soumis à une SI-TF. Ils ont également fait l'objet d'une analyse en composantes principales (ACP) et d'une analyse discriminante (AD) pour la classification du saindoux dans les formulations de savons cosmétiques via deux modèles d'AD : le modèle A (pourcentage de saindoux dans le savon cosmétique) et le modèle B (savon cosmétique de porc et non de porc). Le degré d'altération du saindoux dans le savon cosmétique a été évalué selon une régression linéaire (régression L), une régression des moindres carrés partiels (régression PLS) et une régression sur composantes principales (régression CP). RÉSULTATS: Le spectre SI-TF de l'huile de palme différait légèrement de celui du saindoux sur la plage de nombre d'ondes de 1 453 cm −1 et 1 415 cm −1 dans l'huile de palme et le saindoux, respectivement, et indiquait les vibrations de flexion des groupes aliphatiques CH2 et CH3, et du groupe carboxyle OH, respectivement. Les deux modèles d'AD ont permis de classer avec précision 100 % des formulations de savon cosmétique. Néanmoins, la valeur de vérification obtenue s'est avérée inférieure à 100 % une fois les modèles utilisés pour prédire l'échantillon de savon cosmétique inconnu suspecté de contenir du saindoux ou un pourcentage de saindoux différent. L'ACP du modèle A et du modèle B expliquait une variabilité cumulée (VC) similaire de 92,86 % pour l'ensemble de l'ensemble des données. La régression L et la régression PLS ont montré le coefficient de détermination le plus élevé (R2), soit 0,996, ainsi que l'erreur type relative (ETR) et l'erreur carrée moyenne (EMM) les plus faibles, indiquant que les deux modèles de régression ont été efficaces pour quantifier le saindoux adultérant dans le savon cosmétique. CONCLUSION: Couplée à la chimiométrie avec une AD, une ACP et une régression L ou une régression PLS, la SI-TF permet d'analyser la présence de saindoux et de quantifier son pourcentage dans les formulations de savon cosmétique.

Waste cooking oil (WCO) appears to be a potential carbonaceous source for synthesizing graphene sand composite (GSC) adsorbent in removing pollutants. This study presents a green synthesis method of GSC using WCO as a sustainable carbon source for the synthesis of GSC through the thermal graphitization method. Characterization analysis conducted on GSCWCO verified the successful coating of WCO onto the sand surface and conversion to graphene, which possessed distinct functional groups and features of graphene materials. GSCWCO adsorbent effectiveness in removing Congo Red dye through batch adsorption was studied under the influence of different initial concentrations (20 to 100 mg/L), and the optimum pH (pH 2 to 10), contact time (5 to 240 min), and temperature (25 to 45 °C) were investigated. The GSCWCO showed removal rates of 91.5% achieved at an initial dye concentration of 20 mg L-1, 1.0 g of adsorbent dosage, a temperature of 25 °C, and 150 min of contact time. The GSCWCO exhibited a maximum capacity of 5.52 mg g-1, was well-fitted to the Freundlich isotherm model with an R2 value of 0.989 and had an adsorption mechanism that followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Negative values of enthalpy (ΔH) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) revealed that CR adsorption onto GSCWCO was a spontaneous and exothermic process. The presence of functional groups on the surface of GSCWCO with such interactions (π-π attractive forces, hydrophobic forces, and hydrogen bonding) was responsible for the anionic dye removal. Regeneration of GSCWCO adsorbent declined after four cycles, possibly due to the chemisorption of dyes with GSC that resulted in inefficient adsorption. Being a waste-to-wealth product, GSCWCO possessed great potential to be used for water treatment and simultaneously benefited the environment through the effort to reduce the excessive discharge of WCO.

BACKGROUND: Communication adjustment from patients' perspective is paramount to ensure optimization of voice rehabilitation post laryngectomy. Very few specific self-rating tools exist with the Self-Evaluation of Communication Experiences after Laryngectomy (SECEL) having the most evidence regarding validity, reliability and clinical utility. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to translate and validate a Bahasa Malaysia version of SECEL (mSECEL) using a validated framework of transcultural adaptation. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Otorhinolaryngology, Department of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre from February 2019 to May 2020. The mSECEL was produced following a rigorous forward and backward translation. Eighty-three laryngectomees (78 male, five female) using various methods of alaryngeal communication (47 voice prosthesis, 29 electrolarynx, three esophageal speech and four pen and paper), completed the mSECEL and mVHI-10 before head and neck and flexible laryngoscopic examinations. The mSECEL was repeated in 2 weeks via telephone interview or clinic visit. Its reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation. The Pearson product-moment correlation test was used to analyze correlation between the mSECEL and mVHI-10. RESULTS: The mSECEL questionnaire showed strong internal consistency with the Cronbach alpha of >0.90 for total score, Environmental and Attitude subscale. The test-retest reliability for total mSECEL score was high with the intraclass correlation of 0.97. There was a highly significant positive correlation between the mSECEL total score and mVHI-10 (P < 0.001). Items in the General subscale showed poorer internal consistency with Cronbach alpha ranging 0.55-0.46 and poor correlation with mVHI-10. CONCLUSIONS: The Bahasa Malaysia version of the SECEL measure is a valid and reliable instrument to evaluate communication perception after laryngectomy. Future studies should consider subscale validation and further abbreviation of its items to make this measure clinically relevant.

The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) plays a key role in many metabolic functions, including the generation of NADPH, biosynthesis of nucleotides, and carbon homeostasis. In particular, the intermediates of PPP have been found to be significantly perturbed in bacterial metabolomic studies. Nonetheless, detailed analysis to gain mechanistic information of PPP metabolism remains limited as most studies are unable to report on the absolute levels of the metabolites. Absolute quantification of metabolites is a prerequisite to study the details of fluxes and its regulations. Isotope tracer or labeling studies are conducted in vivo and in vitro and have significantly improved the analysis and understanding of PPP. Due to the laborious procedure and limitations in the in vivo method, an in vitro approach known as Group Specific Internal Standard Technology (GSIST) has been successfully developed to measure the absolute levels of central carbon metabolism, including PPP. The technique adopts derivatization of an experimental sample and a corresponding internal standard with isotope-coded reagents to provide better precision for accurate identification and absolute quantification. In this review, we highlight bacterial studies that employed isotopic tracers as the tagging agents used for the absolute quantification analysis of PPP metabolites.

Glucocorticoid-induced osteogenic dysfunction is the main pathologyical mechanism underlying the development of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Glucocorticoids promote adipogenic differentiation and osteoblast apoptosis through various pathways. Various ongoing studies are exploring the potential of natural products in preventing glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Preclinical studies have consistently shown the bone protective effects of tocotrienol through its antioxidant and anabolic effects. This review aims to summarise the potential mechanisms of tocotrienol in preventing glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis based on existing in vivo and in vitro evidence. The current literature showed that tocotrienol prevents oxidative damage on osteoblasts exposed to high levels of glucocorticoids. Tocotrienol reduces lipid peroxidation and increases oxidative stress enzyme activities. The reduction in oxidative stress protects the osteoblasts and preserves the bone microstructure and biomechanical strength of glucocorticoid-treated animals. In other animal models, tocotrienol has been shown to activate the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway and lower the RANKL/OPG ratio, which are the targets of glucocorticoids. In conclusion, tocotrienol enhances osteogenic differentiation and bone formation in glucocorticoid-treated osteoblasts while improving structural integrity in glucocorticoid-treated rats. This is achieved by preventing oxidative stress and osteoblast apoptosis. However, these preclinical results should be validated in a randomised controlled trial.

Objectives: To determine the serum levels of interleukin-1beta (IL-1ß) in patients with acquired laryngotracheal stenosis (ALTS) and healthy volunteers and compare levels between serum and tissue of the stenotic segment. Materials and methods: An exploratory cohort study included 20 participants with ALTS and 5 healthy volunteers. ALTS group was categorised into mild and severe according to grade of stenosis and presence of tracheostomy. Comparisons of serum levels of IL-1ß between pre- and post-surgical intervention and between blood and tissue samples in the severe ALTS group were made. Correlation of IL-1ß levels between blood and tissue was assessed using Spearman's correlation. Results: Severe ALTS patients showed higher serum levels of IL-1ß compared to mild ALTS and healthy volunteers (p = 0.045). IL-1ß was higher before surgical intervention than after surgical intervention (p = 0.003). There was a strong positive correlation of IL-1ß between serum and tissue (r = 0.74, p = 0.035). Conclusion: Serum levels of IL-1ß are higher in ALTS patients than in healthy controls and positively correlate with tissue levels. The decreasing trend of serum IL-1ß observed following successful surgical intervention reflects the absence of ongoing inflammation at the stenotic segment.

Metabolomics is a comprehensive analysis of metabolites existing in biological systems. As one of the important "omics" tools, the approach has been widely employed in various fields in helping to better understand the complex cellular metabolic states and changes. Bacterial metabolomics has gained a significant interest as bacteria serve to provide a better subject or model at systems level. The approach in metabolomics is categorized into untargeted and targeted which serves different paradigms of interest. Nevertheless, the bottleneck in metabolomics has been the sample or metabolite preparation method. A custom-made method and design for a particular species or strain of bacteria might be necessary as most studies generally refer to other bacteria or even yeast and fungi that may lead to unreliable analysis. The paramount aspect of metabolomics design comprises sample harvesting, quenching, and metabolite extraction procedures. Depending on the type of samples and research objective, each step must be at optimal conditions which are significantly important in determining the final output. To date, there are no standardized nor single designated protocols that have been established for a specific bacteria strain for untargeted and targeted approaches. In this paper, the existing and current developments of sample preparation methods of bacterial metabolomics used in both approaches are reviewed. The review also highlights previous literature of optimized conditions used to propose the most ideal methods for metabolite preparation, particularly for bacterial cells. Advantages and limitations of methods are discussed for future improvement of bacterial metabolomics.

The threat of COVID-19 has altered consumers shopping behaviour and increased consumers' willingness to purchase food using online food delivery services. Consumers were more likely to practice strict hand hygiene measures and were concerned with food safety. Such behaviours were likely driven by the fear and threat of contracting COVID-19. This study aims to use Protective Motivation Theory (PMT) to investigate how COVID-19 affects food shopping and food safety behaviour. An online, cross-sectional study was conducted in Indonesia and Malaysia to determine the protective motivation to engage in three food shopping and hygiene practices such as i) Safe food shopping behaviour; ii) Hand hygiene and avoiding cross contamination; and iii) Use of online food delivery services. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Spearman rho's correlation and binary logistic regression. A total of 1180 responses were received of which 1129 were valid. Gender was identified as a significant predictor across all food safety behaviours during COVID-19. Response efficacy and self-efficacy were significant predictors for food shopping behaviour while perceived severity significantly predicted hand hygiene practices after shopping. Age, frequency of food preparation and shopping, perceived severity, perceived vulnerability, response efficacy and self-efficacy were significant predictors for use of online food delivery services. Our findings suggest that women were more likely to engage in protective measures during food shopping, carry out hand hygiene practices after shopping and use online food delivery services during COVID-19. Participants with higher response and self-efficacy scores were more likely to shop from markets or shops with high hygiene standards while participants who perceived COVID-19 as a serious threat were more likely to clean and sanitise their hands after shopping. Participants also believed that the use of online food delivery services helps to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection. However, foods should be purchased from trusted restaurants or takeaways. This is the first study to use Protection Motivation Theory to explore consumers' food shopping, hand hygiene and online food delivery practices during COVID-19.

Hybrid glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites have been used for decades in various engineering applications. However, it has a drawback with its application in marine/flood environments due to a lack of water resistance and frail mechanical stability. Floods have been considered one of the most periodic hazards that could hit urban areas, due to climate change. The present paper aims to address this gap and to investigate the mechanical properties (tensile, compressive, and flexural strength) and water absorption capacity of hybrid GFRP composite comprising woven E-glass fabric and epoxy resin, various reinforcing materials (kenaf and coconut fibres), and various filler materials (fly ash, nano-silica, and calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The composites with 30 wt.% GFRP, 50 wt.% resin, 15 wt.% fly ash, 5 wt.% CaCO3, 10 wt.% GFRP, 60 wt.% resin, and 30 wt.% fly ash showed the lowest water absorption property of 0.45%. The results revealed that the GFRP composite reinforced kenaf fibres with nano-silica, fly ash, and CaCO3 improved the water absorption resistance. At the same time, GFRP reinforced the coconut fibres with fly ash, and kenaf fibres with CaCO3 showed no favourable impact on water absorption. The identification of a hybrid GFRP composite with various reinforcing materials and fillers would assist future developments with a more compatible, enhanced, and reliable water-resistant composite, specifically for structural applications in flood-prone areas.

Aims@#Polymyxins are an important last-line treatment for infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Nonetheless, the emergence of polymyxin-resistance and the limiting of polymyxin monotherapy urgently demands its optimisation. Aquilaria malaccensis (Agarwood) has been widely used as traditional medicine. Many parts of the plant including leaves exhibit a considerable in vitro antibacterial activity against microbial pathogens. Exploiting A. malaccensis in combination with polymyxins provides a novel strategy in fighting antimicrobial resistance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the combination effects of A. malaccensis extract with polymyxins against Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae.@*Methodology and results@#In vitro time-kill studies and GC-MS analysis were performed to evaluate the bacterial killing of polymyxin B and extract combination and analyse chemical compounds of the extract, respectively. The combination of polymyxin B (1 mg/L) and A. malaccensis extract (32 mg/mL and 64 mg/mL) treatments exhibited enhanced bacterial killing compared to polymyxin B alone at 4 h and 24 h. Combination treatments also inhibited the bacterial growth of both A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae observed throughout the 24 h. More than sixty compounds including phytol, 9,12-octadecadienal, fatty acid, alkanes and terpenoids were putatively identified as the compounds that likely contributed to the antibacterial activity.@*Conclusion, significance and impact of study@#This study was the first to report the potential application of A. malaccensis extract in combination with polymyxin B in treatment against A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae and can be further investigated and optimized for the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Carnitine-acylcarnitine Translocase (CACT) deficiency (OMIM 212138) and carnitine palmitoyl transferase 2 (CPT2) deficiency (OMIM 60065050) are rare inherited disorders of mitochondrial long chain fatty acid oxidation. The aim of our study is to review the clinical, biochemical and molecular characteristics in children diagnosed with CACT and CPT2 deficiencies in Malaysia. DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study. We reviewed medical records of six patients diagnosed with CACT and CPT2 deficiencies. They were identified from a selective high-risk screening of 50,579 patients from January 2010 until Jun 2020. RESULTS: All six patients had either elevation of the long chain acylcarnitines and/or an elevated (C16 + C18:1)/C2 acylcarnitine ratio. SLC25A20 gene sequencing of patient 1 and 6 showed a homozygous splice site mutation at c.199-10 T > G in intron 2. Two novel mutations at c.109C > T p. (Arg37*) in exon 2 and at c.706C > T p. (Arg236*) in exon 7 of SLC25A20 gene were found in patient 2. Patient 3 and 4 (siblings) exhibited a compound heterozygous mutation at c.638A > G p. (Asp213Gly) and novel mutation c.1073 T > G p. (Leu358Arg) in exon 4 of CPT2 gene. A significant combined prevalence at 0.01% of CACT and CPT2 deficiencies was found in the symptomatic Malaysian patients. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the (C16 + C18:1)/C2 acylcarnitine ratio in dried blood spot in our experience improves the diagnostic specificity for CACT/CPT2 deficiencies over long chain acylcarnitine (C16 and C18:1) alone. DNA sequencing for both genes aids in confirming the diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the sound frequency of snoring in relation to the site of upper airway vibration among snorers. METHODS: 383 snores from 40 participants who complained of snoring were digitally recorded during natural and induced sleep using a level III polysomnography monitor with a built-in microphone. During drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE), the real-time site of upper airway obstruction was assessed, and the sound frequency of snoring was recorded synchronously. RESULTS: The mean peak of snoring frequency for unilevel palatal, oropharynx and epiglottis obstruction were 522.5, 482.4 and 300.0 Hz, respectively. Most participants showed multilevel obstruction at the palate and oropharynx, in which the mean for bi-peak snoring frequency were 402.90 Hz and 1086.96 Hz, respectively. Severity of OSA was significantly associated with multilevel obstruction. CONCLUSIONS: There was a significant association between the snoring sound frequency and site of unilevel obstruction. Palatal or oropharyngeal obstruction produced sound at mid-frequency range, while the epiglottis produced a low frequency range. Multilevel obstruction documented a bi-peak snoring frequency.

The widespread presence of microplastics has caused significant concerns on their potential effects on marine ecosystems. Microplastics are classified as plastic products of less than 5 mm in size and are known to be one of the most dangerous aquatic debris to marine species. Sea cucumbers are deposit feeders living in sediment regions and benthic zone that may collect microplastics in low-energy environments. This research aims to evaluate the types of microplastic isolated from the intestine of Stichopus horrens in Malaysia. This species is selected because it is mainly found in this island. Pulau Pangkor is one of the leading tourism destinations on the small islands is facing increasing numbers of tourists and development and it is useful for sustainable study. A total of 20 S. horrens samples collected from Pulau Pangkor, Malaysia were dissected, and their intestines were collected for digestion. Microplastics were extracted using NaOH and filtered using filter paper. Microplastic identification was conducted on the based of the physical characteristics (colour, shape, size) and chemical characterisation was evaluated using FTIR for polymer functional groups. A total of 1446 unit of microplastics were found in S. horrens. Among various types and colours, fibre (90%) and black (59%) were dominant amongst the various particles identified. The majority of microplastics sizes were 0.51 µm and 1-2 µm. Two polymer materials were identified, namely polyethylene and poly(methyl methacrylate). As a conclusion, the findings of the study will serve as primary data for pollution indicators in respective islands. The microplastics could impact the immune system and upset gut's balance of human.
