INTRODUCTION: Epistaxis or nose bleeds is one the most common reported emergencies in the ear, nose and department. Causes of epistaxis varies from being trivial such as nose picking or dry air or trauma to concerning such as infections or elevated blood pressure to life threatening condition such as malignancies. METHODS: The purposely constructed questionnaire was used for this research. The questionnaire was constructed by the panel of experts, language, psychological, doctors and subject specialist was there in the team. Internal consistencies of the questionnaire was measure through cronbach alpha. RESULTS: Cronbach alpha = 0.84. Mean ± S.D of age of the respondents were 27.8 ± 9.8. 71.6% were females, 91.5% were belongs to Aseer region, 86.6% were living in village, 77.0% have intermediate level of education, 59.2% were single, 41.6% having health care profession. 51.1% having income less than 5000SAR. CONCLUSION: Most of them rely on internet and social media to gain knowledge regarding home management of epistaxis. This has limitations as they do not get a hands-on experience. Therefore, we recommend that first aid camps and workshops in management of epistaxis should be organized in order to properly educate the general population regarding its home management.

BACKGROUND: Eye injury is a leading cause of monocular blindness and is second only to cataract as the commonest cause of visual impairment. Injury is the commonest reason for eye-related emergency department visits. AIM: To assess population awareness regarding eye injuries first aids in Aseer region, Saudi Arabia. METHODOLOGY: A descriptive cross-sectional approach was used targeting all accessible population in Aseer region, Southern of Saudi Arabia. Data were collected from participants using electronic pre-structured questionnaire. The tool will cover participants' socio-demographic data, participants' history of eye injury, awareness and practice regarding different types of eye injuries first aids. RESULTS: The survey included 1213 participants who completed the questionnaire. Participants' ages ranged from 18 to 60 years old with mean age of 22.3 ± 11.9 years old. About 69% of the participants reported for having constant eye pain, 68.3% reported in case of Foreign Body (FB) in the eye, 66.9% reported for torn eye lid. Regarding signs of scratch eye, 64.2% reported for feel FB inside, 58% reported for eye pain and 55.2% reported for blurred vision. Exact of 25.7% of participants reported that they should blink several times in case of getting eye scratch, whereas 77.8% reported that they should rub the eye to try to remove any foreign object, 36.3% preferred to use the soothing eye drop. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the study revealed that public awareness regarding eye injury first aid in Aseer region was poor especially for chemical injuries. Physician role should be augmented and health education campaigns are advised.

RESUMO

In this work, we report the synthesis of novel cationic phosphonium gold nanoparticles dispersible in water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for their potential use in biomedical applications. All the cationic-functionalising ligands currently reported in the literature are ammonium-based species. Here, the synthesis and characterisation of an alternative system, based on phosphonioalkylthiosulfate zwitterions and phosphonioalkylthioacetate were carried out. We have also demonstrated that our phosphonioalkylthiosulfate zwitterions readily disproportionate into phosphonioalkylthiolates in situ during the synthesis of gold nanoparticles produced by the borohydride reduction of gold(III) salts. The synthesis of the cationic gold nanoparticles using these phosphonium ligands was carried out in water and DMSO. UV-visible spectroscopic and TEM studies have shown that the phosphonioalkylthiolates bind to the surface of gold nanoparticles which are typically around 10 nm in diameter. The resulting cationic-functionalised gold nanoparticles are dispersible in aqueous media and in DMSO, which is the only organic solvent approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for drug carrier tests. This indicates their potential future use in biological applications. This work shows the synthesis of a new family of phosphonium-based ligands, which behave as cationic masked thiolate ligands in the functionalisation of gold nanoparticles. These highly stable colloidal cationic phosphonium gold nanoparticles dispersed in water and DMSO can offer a great opportunity for the design of novel biorecognition and drug delivery systems.
