BACKGROUND: The nursing field is the fourth most stressful occupation in the health sector. Emergency department nurses often face crises and unpredictable situations that can negatively affect their quality of life and the quality of care. This study aimed to investigate the determinants of work stress among ED nurses in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Participants (n = 122) were emergency nurses recruited through convenience sampling from four EDs in Sleman District, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were gathered using an online self-administered survey consisting of the workload, self-efficacy, and work stress questionnaires. Hierarchical linear regression analysis with the entry method was used to examine the main determinants of work stress. RESULTS: The average work stress (38.29 ± 8), workload (30.83 ± 9.21), and self-efficacy (32.47 ± 3.61) scores were at a moderate level. Hierarchical linear regression showed that workplace, being a head nurse, and workload were the main determinants that contributed to 25.4 % of work stress among ED nurses. CONCLUSIONS: The study results confirm that having a high workload, working in a private hospital, and being a head nurse are the main determinants of work stress among ED nurses in Sleman, Indonesia.

Background: Blended learning, which comprises a combination of online and classroom-based activities, in nursing education can cause significant academic stress and depression symptoms among students. However, self-esteem may mediate the relationship between academic self-efficacy and depression symptoms. Studies of the relationship between academic self-efficacy, self-esteem, and depression symptoms among nursing students participating in blended learning are limited. Objectives: To examine the determinants of depression symptoms and the mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between academic self-efficacy and depression symptoms among nursing students who participate in blended learning. Design: Cross-sectional study using convenience sampling. Settings: Ten universities across five provinces and two major Indonesian islands. Participants: A total of 534 undergraduate nursing students with a mean age of 20.30 years (standard deviation, ±1.36 years). Methods: An online survey was conducted between April and August 2022 to collect data from 10 universities applying blended learning. The study instruments included the General Self-Efficacy Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and a 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire. Data were analysed by hierarchical linear regression using PROCESS macro version 4.1. Results: Of the 534 participants, 213 (39.14 %) experienced moderate-to-severe depression symptoms. Two variables, online learning difficulties (ß = 0.10; p = .012) and self-esteem (ß = -0.40; p < .001), were significant determinants of depression symptoms. Self-esteem mediated the relationship between academic self-efficacy and depression symptoms. Conclusions: It is necessary to understand the online learning difficulties experienced by blended learning students and improve their self-esteem by maximising academic self-efficacy to prevent depression symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac arrest is one of the fatal medical emergencies which need to be treated immediately. Poor survival rates in the community settings are common because of limited and ineffective bystander basic life support (BLS). This study aimed to identify factors that are associated with the willingness to perform BLS in communities in Yogyakarta, Indonesia METHODS: A descriptive study was conducted with a cross-sectional design. Participants (n = 251) were enrolled from the general population consisting of teachers, security personnel, and police officers recruited through cluster random sampling. Data were gathered using both digital or printed questionnaires. Ordinal logistic regression with adjusted odds ratio (AOR) was used to analyze the association between BLS predictors and willingness to perform BLS. RESULTS: Most participants were willing to perform BLS for all genders (55.55%). The inability to perform BLS and fear of causing harm were the main barriers to performing BLS accounting for 61.35% and 43.82%, respectively. Compared to other independent predictors, ages 40-59 were found to be the highest predictors of willingness to perform BLS (AOR:1.44) followed by experience of seeing real or simulation of the emergency case (AOR:1.38) CONCLUSIONS: More than half of the respondents were eager to perform BLS although some barriers were also found. This study provides some understanding of the predictor factors associated with BLS performance and shows respondents with some training or experience were more likely to perform BLS. The results inform policymakers to develop a strategic plan for increasing willingness to apply BLS in the community. WC:250.
