RESUMO

Orthognathic surgery can achieve positive changes in a patient's facial appearance and functional abilities. Motivated patients seek this elective treatment, which requires a long-term commitment. By understanding the surgical techniques involved, the perioperative nurse can plan intraoperative care better and help these individuals reach their goals.

RESUMO

A case of a 13-year-old male with facial asymmetry caused by an enlarging lesion of the mandible is reported. Criteria for treatment are reviewed. An extensive giant cell granuloma of the mandible was treated by curettage rather than segmental resection.

RESUMO

Many congenital ear deformities involve abnormal plical folding. This appears to be a result of deficient intrinsic and extrinsic auricular muscle activity as well as intrauterine pressure effects. These deformities can usually be corrected by appropriate splinting in the neonatal period, a time when estrogen activity is increased and the ear is very malleable. The methods used and the results of treatment are presented.

RESUMO

A lesion which appeared clinically consistent with a ranula was explored surgically and found to represent a dilated submandibular duct. The differential diagnosis of cystlike swelling in the floor of the mouth should include sialolithiasis, mucous retention phenomenon (mucocele, ranula), dermoid and epidermal inclusion cyst, thyroglossal duct cyst, branchial cleft cyst, hemangioma, lymphangioma, cystic hygroma, lipoma, and occasionally pleomorphic adenoma. The case presented here demonstrates, both clinically and histologically, the cystic appendix-like appearance of a dilated submandibular duct manifest at birth. Reference is made to the limited number of similar cases noted in the relevant literature.
