Public health guidelines and a myriad of studies have proven that exercise is beneficial in the alleviation of various cardio-metabolic diseases. Congenital heart disease (ConHD) is one of the most frequently occurring congenital structural malfunctions in the pediatric population, affecting nine of every 1,000 live births. Only a few studies have established the impact of a structured exercise program on cardiopulmonary fitness in diverse groups of patients with ConHD. It is also alarming to know that a substantial number of these patients and their caregivers often remain very wary of exercise. Anxiety about exercise may increase the risk of developing morbid obesity and other long-term health complications of ConHD. The present review of a critically appraised topic is undertaken to answer the question, "Does structured exercise intervention (cardiac rehabilitation) improve cardiorespiratory fitness in children and young adults with ConHD?" Exercise science and the medical literature were searched for studies that engaged the use of aerobic exercise in patients with different ConHD diagnoses. The search yielded four studies after screening with the inclusion and exclusion criteria, which were further narrowed to three studies after a full-text review. These studies yielded results showing significant increments in peak exercise workload, duration, power output, peak oxygen uptake, or improved tissue oxygenation and muscle strength after an exercise training intervention. It is noteworthy that a group identified as "cyanotic palliated" exhibited the most significant impairment both at baseline and after the exercise intervention. This review provides level 1b medical evidence that a structured exercise program may improve cardiopulmonary fitness in patients with ConHD, which is likely to be beneficial to their overall physical, motor, and psychosocial development. The results of this review may be useful for alleviating the anxiety of patients and their caregivers about participation in structured exercise programs. This review should also motivate future research investigations to develop clinical guidelines for the management of patients with ConHD by adding exercise prescriptions to their daily therapeutic regimens.

Although selenium is known to be essential for reproductive function, studies have indicated the adverse effect with its prolonged use. The present study investigated the duration-related effect of selenium administrations on reproductive hormones and estrous cycle indices in adult female Wistar rats exposed to a model of light pollution using altered photoperiod (AP). Ninety-six cyclic female Wistar rats displaying 4-5 days' estrous cycle length (ECL) and weighing 148-152 g were randomly divided into short and long experimental cohorts consisting of six groups each and spanning for 1 and 8 weeks, respectively. Each consisted of control, high selenium dose (HSE), low selenium dose (LSE), AP, AP + HSE, and AP + LSE. The rats were orally administered high dose (150 µg/kg) and low dose (100 µg/kg) of sodium selenite once per day. The estrous cycle indices were monitored. Plasma levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E), progesterone (P), prolactin, E/P ratio, and histology of ovary and uterine horn were evaluated. The statistical analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. In AP rats, HSE and LSE caused no significant effect on LH, E, P, and E/P ratio, ECL, estrus interval (EI), and estrous cycle ratio (ECR). The effect of HSE and LSE on LH, E, P, E/P ratio, and ECL showed no duration-dependent increase, but there was a duration-dependent increase in EI and ECR at low dose. The study indicated that administration of HSE of selenium improved reproductive function in photo-pollution-exposed rats irrespective of the duration of treatment.

Dietary factors do not only contribute to remission of diseases but also play important roles in the progression of medical conditions. We investigated the effect of different formulations of maize diets on the healing of experimental acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) in male rats. Thirty-five (35) male Wistar rats (150-170 g) were randomly divided into control (CTR), UC, UC + high maize diet (HMD), UC + low maize diet (LMD), and UC + maize-free diet (MFD) groups. CTR, UC, UC + HMD, UC + LMD, and UC + MFD groups were administered different formulations of dietary maize ranging from 0% to 70%. Body weight change (BWC), colon weight, macroscopic ulcer score, catalase, glutathione (GSH), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), myeloperoxidase, diarrhea score, superoxide dismutase (SOD), Ki-67 expression, and histological studies were done. Results were analyzed using SPSS 23. UC + LMD and UC + MFD groups showed a duration-dependent reduction in negative BWC, respectively. When compared with UC group, UC + LMD and UC + MFD significantly increased (P < 0.05) GSH and SOD respectively but had no effect on TNF-α and diarrhea score. UC + HMD increased diarrhea and macroscopic ulcer scores with Ki-67 expression highest in UC + MFD. The study indicated that consumption of either LMD or maize-free diet by colitic rats relatively enhanced healing of UC.
