RESUMO

Corrosion is clearly one of the more common causes of materials failure in stainless steel. To manage corrosion, chemical inhibitors are often used for prevention and control. Ionic liquids due to their hydrophobic and corrosion-resistant property are being explored as alternative protective coatings and anti-corrosion materials. In this particular study, ionic liquids containing functionalized imidazolium cations and tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (FAP) anions were investigated for their ability to inhibit corrosion on stainless steel surfaces in acidic environment. Using surface characterization techniques, specifically scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), the morphology and the elemental composition of the steel surfaces before and after corrosion were determined. Contact angle measurements were also performed to determine how these ionic liquids were able to wet the stainless steel surface. In addition, potentiodynamic studies were carried out to ensure that corrosion inhibition has occurred. Results show that these ionic liquids were able to inhibit corrosion on the stainless steel surfaces. This indicates promise in the use of these FAP-based ionic liquids for corrosion management in stainless steel.

RESUMO

The oxidative cleavage reaction of the C-S bond using singlet oxygen is challenging because of its uncontrollable nature. We have developed a novel method for the singlet-oxygen-mediated selective C-S bond cleavage reaction using silver(II)-ligand complexes. Visible-light-induced silver catalysis enables the controlled oxidative cleavage of benzyl thiols to afford carbonyl compounds, such as aldehydes or ketones, which are important synthetic components.

RESUMO

A mild visible-light-mediated, photocatalyst-free arylation of 2H-indazoles was developed. The formation of an electron donor-acceptor complex by 2H-indazoles and aryl diazonium salts in the presence of pyridine allows the direct arylation of 2H-indazoles under visible-light irradiation. This process provides an efficient route for the synthesis of C3-arylated-2H-indazoles, which are important scaffolds of various bioactive compounds.

Headspace Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (HS-FTIR) in tandem with chemometrics was applied to differentiate several species of the genus Pandanus. The headspace was generated from each Pandanus sample after incubation in a tightly sealed sample chamber. The resulting FTIR spectra of the headspace samples were found to be almost similar, but the application of principal component analysis (PCA) effectively differentiated the species. The unique spectral features for some samples were highlighted in the second-derivative FTIR spectra. A higher variance was exhibited in the PCA bi-plot of the 2nd derivative spectral data. The principal components differentiated not only the species, but also the cultivars or varieties, which formed distinct but proximate clusters. The manner of clustering obtained in this study resembled the behavior reported in a Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA analysis conducted on the Pandanus samples. The results demonstrate the potential of headspace FTIR spectroscopy as a simple, rapid, non-destructive, and relatively inexpensive method to discriminate between plant species and varieties.
