Determination of the irradiation field at the research reactor TRIGA Mainz for BNCT.

For the application of the BNCT for the excorporal treatment of organs at the TRIGA Mainz, the basic characteristics of the radiation field in the thermal column as beam geometry, neutron and gamma ray energies, angular distributions, neutron flux, as well as absorbed gamma and neutron doses must be determined in a reproducible way. To determine the mixed irradiation field thermoluminescence detectors (TLD) made of CaF(2):Tm with a newly developed energy-compensation filter system and LiF:Mg,Ti materials with different (6)Li concentrations and different thicknesses as well as thin gold foils were used.

p-sd Shell gap reduction in neutron-rich systems and cross-shell excitations in 20 O.

Excited states in 20O were populated in the reaction 10Be(14C,alpha) at Florida State University (FSU). Charged particles were detected with a particle telescope consisting of 4 annularly segmented Si surface barrier detectors and gamma radiation was detected with the FSU gamma detector array. Five new states were observed below 6 MeV from the alpha-gamma and alpha-gamma-gamma coincidence data. Shell model calculations suggest that most of the newly observed states are core-excited 1p-1h excitations across the N=Z=8 shell gap. Comparisons between experimental data and calculations for the neutron-rich O and F isotopes imply a steady reduction of the p-sd shell gap as neutrons are added.

[Honduran experience with the control of acute infantile respiratory infections]. / Experiencia hondureña en el control de las infecciones respiratorias agudas infantiles.

The Honduran Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare, in consultation with the HEALTHCOM Project of the Academy for Educational Development, conducted a national study that examined the characteristic patterns of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in children, as well as the measures being used to control them. Following an ethnographic analysis of the entire population, a pilot intervention program was developed to teach mothers how to recognize ARI symptoms and take appropriate measures in the case of mild, moderate, and severe episodes. The intervention consisted of teaching health workers (HW) in eight rural towns the most important aspects of ARI control and instructing them in a methodology for transmitting these concepts to the community through oral presentations in local health centers. The methodology included behavior modification techniques and incentives. Three observation instruments were used to compare the effectiveness of the health workers' presentations before and after their training, as well as the knowledge acquired by those who attended the presentations and the community at large. The results indicated that the techniques used both to train the HW and by them in their presentations helped the mothers and other members of the community to respond more effectively when children came down with acute respiratory infections of varying degrees of severity.

[Ultrastructure of the Ranvier's nodes in myelinated nerve fibers of the shrimp Penaeus]. / Ultraestructura de los nudos de Ranvier en fibras nerviosas mielinizadas del camarón Penaeus.

From a comparative point of view the axonal cytology and the ultrastructure of Ranvier nodes in non-giant myelinated fibers of the shrimp Penaeus are described.
